1 N ow the Philistines gathered their armies for battle and were assembled at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah in Ephes-dammim.

2 S aul and the men of Israel were encamped in the Valley of Elah and drew up in battle array against the Philistines.

También Saúl y los hombres de Israel se reunieron, acamparon en el valle de Ela, y se pusieron en orden de batalla contra los filisteos.

3 A nd the Philistines stood on a mountain on one side and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side, with the valley between them.

Los filisteos estaban sobre un monte a un lado, e Israel estaba sobre otro monte al otro lado, quedando el valle entre ellos.

4 A nd a champion went out of the camp of the Philistines named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

Salió entonces del campamento de los filisteos un paladín llamado Goliat, oriundo de Gat, que medía seis codos y un palmo de altura.

5 A nd he had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of mail, and the coat weighed 5, 000 shekels of bronze.

Llevaba un casco de bronce en su cabeza y vestía una coraza de malla; la coraza pesaba cinco mil siclos de bronce.

6 H e had bronze shin armor on his legs and a bronze javelin across his shoulders.

En sus piernas tenía canilleras de bronce y una jabalina de bronce a la espalda.

7 A nd the shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam; his spear’s head weighed 600 shekels of iron. And a shield bearer went before him.

El asta de su lanza era como un rodillo de telar y la punta de su lanza pesaba seiscientos siclos de hierro. Delante de él iba su escudero.

8 G oliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, Why have you come out to draw up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves and let him come down to me.

Goliat se paró y dio voces a los escuadrones de Israel, diciéndoles: —¿Para qué os habéis puesto en orden de batalla? ¿No soy yo el filisteo y vosotros los siervos de Saúl? Escoged de entre vosotros un hombre que venga contra mí.

9 I f he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants; but if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.

Si él puede pelear conmigo y me vence, nosotros seremos vuestros siervos; y si yo puedo más que él y lo venzo, vosotros seréis nuestros siervos y nos serviréis.

10 A nd the Philistine said, I defy the ranks of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.

Hoy yo he desafiado —añadió el filisteo— al campamento de Israel; dadme un hombre que pelee conmigo.

11 W hen Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.

Al escuchar Saúl y todo Israel estas palabras del filisteo, se turbaron y tuvieron mucho miedo.

12 D avid was the son of an Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah named Jesse, who had eight sons. in the days of Saul was old, advanced in years.

David era hijo de aquel hombre efrateo, oriundo de Belén de Judá, llamado Isaí, el cual tenía ocho hijos. En tiempos de Saúl este hombre era ya viejo, de edad muy avanzada,

13 t hree eldest sons had followed Saul into battle. Their names were Eliab the firstborn; next, Abinadab; and third, Shammah.

y los tres hijos mayores de Isaí se habían ido a la guerra para seguir a Saúl. Los nombres de sus tres hijos que se habían ido a la guerra eran: Eliab, el primogénito, el segundo, Abinadab, y el tercero, Sama.

14 D avid was the youngest. The three eldest followed Saul,

David era el menor. Siguieron, pues, los tres mayores a Saúl,

15 B ut David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.

pero David había ido y vuelto, dejando a Saúl, para apacentar las ovejas de su padre en Belén.

16 T he Philistine came out morning and evening, presenting himself for forty days.

Salía, pues, aquel filisteo por la mañana y por la tarde, y así lo hizo durante cuarenta días.

17 A nd Jesse said to David his son, Take for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain and these ten loaves and carry them quickly to your brothers at the camp.

Y dijo Isaí a David, su hijo: «Toma ahora para tus hermanos un efa de este grano tostado y estos diez panes; llévalo pronto al campamento a tus hermanos.

18 A lso take these ten cheeses to the commander of their thousand. See how your brothers fare and bring some token from them.

Estos diez quesos de leche los llevarás al jefe de los mil; fíjate si tus hermanos están bien y trae algo de ellos como prenda.»

19 N ow Saul and the brothers and all the men of Israel were in the Valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

Mientras tanto, Saúl, ellos, y todos los de Israel, estaban en el valle de Ela, peleando contra los filisteos.

20 S o David rose up early next morning, left the sheep with a keeper, took the provisions, and went, as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the encampment as the host going forth to the battleground shouted the battle cry.

Se levantó, pues, David de mañana, y dejando las ovejas al cuidado de un guarda, se fue con su carga como Isaí le había mandado. Llegó al campamento cuando el ejército salía en orden de batalla y daba el grito de combate.

21 A nd Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, army against army.

Se pusieron en orden de batalla Israel y los filisteos, ejército frente a ejército.

22 D avid left his packages in the care of the baggage keeper and ran into the ranks and came and greeted his brothers.

Entonces David dejó su carga en manos del que guardaba el bagaje, y corrió al ejército; cuando llegó preguntó por sus hermanos, si estaban bien.

23 A s they talked, behold, Goliath, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, came forth from the Philistine ranks and spoke the same words as before, and David heard him.

Mientras hablaba con ellos, aquel paladín que se ponía en medio de los dos campamentos, llamado Goliat, el filisteo de Gat, salió de entre las filas de los filisteos diciendo las mismas palabras, y lo oyó David.

24 A nd all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, terrified.

Todos los hombres de Israel que veían a aquel hombre huían de su presencia y sentían gran temor.

25 A nd the Israelites said, Have you seen this man who has come out? Surely he has come out to defy Israel; and the man who kills him the king will enrich with great riches, and will give him his daughter and make his father’s house free in Israel.

Y cada uno de los de Israel decía: «¿No habéis visto a aquel hombre que ha salido? Él se adelanta para provocar a Israel. Al que lo venza, el rey le proporcionará grandes riquezas, le dará a su hija y eximirá de tributos a la casa de su padre en Israel.»

26 A nd David said to the men standing by him, What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?

Entonces habló David a los que estaban junto a él, diciendo: —¿Qué harán al hombre que venza a este filisteo y quite el oprobio de Israel? Porque ¿quién es este filisteo incircunciso para que provoque a los escuadrones del Dios viviente?

27 A nd the told him, Thus shall it be done for the man who kills him.

El pueblo le repitió las mismas palabras, diciendo: «Así se hará al hombre que lo venza.»

28 N ow Eliab his eldest brother heard what he said to the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David and he said, Why did you come here? With whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption and evilness of heart; for you came down that you might see the battle.

Al oírlo hablar así con aquellos hombres, Eliab, su hermano mayor, se encendió en ira contra David y le dijo: —¿Para qué has descendido acá? ¿A quién has dejado aquellas pocas ovejas en el desierto? Yo conozco tu soberbia y la malicia de tu corazón; has venido para ver la batalla.

29 A nd David said, What have I done now? Was it not a harmless question?

—¿Qué he hecho yo ahora? ¿No es esto mero hablar? —dijo David.

30 A nd David turned away from Eliab to another and he asked the same question, and again the men gave him the same answer.

Y, apartándose de él, se dirigió a otros y les preguntó de igual manera; y el pueblo le dio la misma respuesta de antes.

31 W hen David’s words were heard, they were repeated to Saul, and he sent for him.

Fueron oídas las palabras que había dicho David, y se lo contaron a Saúl, que lo hizo venir.

32 D avid said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of this Philistine; your servant will go out and fight with him.

Dijo David a Saúl: —Que nadie se desanime a causa de ése; tu siervo irá y peleará contra este filisteo.

33 A nd Saul said to David, You are not able to go to fight against this Philistine. You are only an adolescent, and he has been a warrior from his youth.

Dijo Saúl a David: —Tú no podrás ir contra aquel filisteo, y pelear con él, porque eres un muchacho, mientras que él es un hombre de guerra desde su juventud.

34 A nd David said to Saul, Your servant kept his father’s sheep. And when there came a lion or again a bear and took a lamb out of the flock,

David respondió a Saúl: —Tu siervo era pastor de las ovejas de su padre. Cuando venía un león o un oso, y se llevaba algún cordero de la manada,

35 I went out after it and smote it and delivered the lamb out of its mouth; and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard and smote it and killed it.

salía yo tras él, lo hería y se lo arrancaba de la boca; y si se revolvía contra mí, le echaba mano a la quijada, lo hería y lo mataba.

36 Y our servant killed both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God!

Ya fuera león o fuera oso, tu siervo lo mataba; y este filisteo incircunciso será como uno de ellos, porque ha provocado al ejército del Dios viviente.

37 D avid said, The Lord Who delivered me out of the paw of the lion and out of the paw of the bear, He will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said to David, Go, and the Lord be with you!

Jehová —añadió David—, que me ha librado de las garras del león y de las garras del oso, él también me librará de manos de este filisteo. Dijo Saúl a David: —Ve, y que Jehová sea contigo.

38 T hen Saul clothed David with his armor; he put a bronze helmet on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail.

Saúl vistió a David con sus ropas, puso sobre su cabeza un casco de bronce y lo cubrió con una coraza.

39 A nd David girded his sword over his armor. Then he tried to go, but could not, for he was not used to it. And David said to Saul, I cannot go with these, for I am not used to them. And David took them off.

Ciñó David la espada sobre sus vestidos y probó a andar, porque nunca había hecho la prueba. Y dijo David a Saúl: —No puedo andar con esto, pues nunca lo practiqué. Entonces David se quitó aquellas cosas.

40 T hen he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones out of the brook and put them in his shepherd’s bag, in his pouch, and his sling was in his hand, and he drew near the Philistine.

Luego tomó en la mano su cayado y escogió cinco piedras lisas del arroyo, las puso en el saco pastoril, en el zurrón que traía, y con su honda en la mano se acercó al filisteo.

41 T he Philistine came on and drew near to David, the man who bore the shield going before him.

El filisteo fue avanzando y acercándose a David, precedido de su escudero.

42 A nd when the Philistine looked around and saw David, he scorned and despised him, for he was but an adolescent, with a healthy reddish color and a fair face.

Cuando el filisteo miró y vio a David, no lo tomó en serio, porque era apenas un muchacho, rubio y de hermoso parecer.

43 A nd the Philistine said to David, Am I a dog, that you should come to me with sticks? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.

El filisteo dijo a David: —¿Soy yo un perro, para que vengas contra mí con palos? Y maldijo a David invocando a sus dioses.

44 T he Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field.

Dijo luego el filisteo a David: —Ven hacia mí y daré tu carne a las aves del cielo y a las bestias del campo.

45 T hen said David to the Philistine, You come to me with a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the ranks of Israel, Whom you have defied.

Entonces dijo David al filisteo: —Tú vienes contra mí con espada, lanza y jabalina; pero yo voy contra ti en el nombre de Jehová de los ejércitos, el Dios de los escuadrones de Israel, a quien tú has provocado.

46 T his day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will smite you and cut off your head. And I will give the corpses of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

Jehová te entregará hoy en mis manos, yo te venceré y te cortaré la cabeza. Y hoy mismo entregaré tu cuerpo y los cuerpos de los filisteos a las aves del cielo y a las bestias de la tierra, y sabrá toda la tierra que hay Dios en Israel.

47 A nd all this assembly shall know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.

Y toda esta congregación sabrá que Jehová no salva con espada ni con lanza, porque de Jehová es la batalla y él os entregará en nuestras manos.

48 W hen the Philistine came forward to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine.

Aconteció que cuando el filisteo se levantó y echó a andar para ir al encuentro de David, David se dio prisa y corrió a la línea de batalla contra el filisteo.

49 D avid put his hand into his bag and took out a stone and slung it, and it struck the Philistine, sinking into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the earth.

Metió David su mano en la bolsa, tomó de allí una piedra, la tiró con la honda e hirió al filisteo en la frente. La piedra se le clavó en la frente y cayó a tierra sobre su rostro.

50 S o David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck down the Philistine and slew him. But no sword was in David’s hand.

Así venció David al filisteo con honda y piedra. Hirió al filisteo y lo mató, sin tener David una espada en sus manos.

51 S o he ran and stood over the Philistine, took his sword and drew it out of its sheath, and killed him, and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their mighty champion was dead, they fled.

Entonces corrió David y se puso sobre el filisteo; tomó su espada, la sacó de la vaina, lo acabó de matar, y le cortó con ella la cabeza. Cuando los filisteos vieron muerto a su paladín, huyeron.

52 A nd the men of Israel and Judah rose with a shout and pursued the Philistines as far as Gath and the gates of Ekron. So the wounded Philistines fell along the way from Shaaraim as far as Gath and Ekron.

Se levantaron luego los de Israel y los de Judá, dieron gritos de guerra y siguieron tras los filisteos hasta el valle y hasta las puertas de Ecrón. Muchos filisteos cayeron heridos por el camino de Saaraim hasta Gat y Ecrón.

53 T he Israelites returned from their pursuit of the Philistines and plundered their tents.

Regresaron los hijos de Israel de perseguir a los filisteos, y saquearon su campamento.

54 D avid took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent.

Entonces David tomó la cabeza del filisteo y la trajo a Jerusalén, pero sus armas las puso en su tienda.

55 W hen Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As your soul lives, O king, I cannot tell.

Cuando Saúl vio a David que salía a encontrarse con el filisteo, dijo a Abner, general del ejército: —Abner, ¿de quién es hijo ese joven? Abner respondió:

56 A nd the king said, Inquire whose son the stripling is.

—¡Vive tu alma!, oh rey, que no lo sé. Y el rey dijo: —Pregunta de quién es hijo ese joven.

57 W hen David returned from killing Goliath the Philistine, Abner brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.

Cuando David volvió de matar al filisteo, Abner lo tomó y lo llevó ante Saúl. David llevaba en su mano la cabeza del filisteo.

58 A nd Saul said to him, Whose son are you, young man? And David answered, I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem.

Saúl le preguntó: —Muchacho, ¿de quién eres hijo? David respondió: —Soy hijo de tu siervo Isaí de Belén.
