1 W hen King Hezekiah heard it, he rent his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the Lord.

Cuando el rey Ezequías lo oyó, rasgó sus vestidos, se cubrió con vestiduras ásperas y entró en la casa de Jehová.

2 A nd he sent Eliakim, who was over his household, Shebna the scribe, and the older priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

Y envió a Eliaquim, el mayordomo, a Sebna, el escriba, y a los ancianos de los sacerdotes, cubiertos de ropas ásperas, a ver al profeta Isaías hijo de Amoz,

3 T hey said to him, Hezekiah says: This is a day of distress, of rebuke and chastisement, and blasphemous and insolent insult; for children have come to the birth, and there is no strength to bring them forth.

para que le dijeran: «Así ha dicho Ezequías: “Este día es día de angustia, de reprensión y de blasfemia, porque los hijos están a punto de nacer y la que da a luz no tiene fuerzas.

4 I t may be that the Lord your God will hear all the words of the Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria has sent to mock, reproach, insult, and defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which the Lord your God has heard. So raise your prayer for the remnant that is left.

Quizá oirá Jehová, tu Dios, todas las palabras del copero mayor, a quien el rey de los asirios, su señor, ha enviado para blasfemar contra el Dios viviente y para insultar con palabras, las cuales Jehová, tu Dios, ha oído. Por tanto, eleva una oración por el remanente que aún queda.”»

5 S o the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

Cuando los siervos del rey Ezequías llegaron a ver a Isaías,

6 I saiah said to them, Say to your master, Thus says the Lord: Do not be afraid because of the words you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have reviled and blasphemed Me.

éste les respondió: «Así diréis a vuestro señor: Así ha dicho Jehová: “No temas por las palabras que has oído, con las cuales han blasfemado contra mí los siervos del rey de Asiria.

7 B ehold, I will put a spirit in him so that he will hear a rumor and return to his own land, and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own country.

Mira, voy a poner en él un espíritu, oirá un rumor, se volverá a su tierra y allí le haré caer a espada.”»

8 S o the Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria fighting against Libnah; for he had heard that the king had left Lachish.

El copero mayor regresó y se encontró al rey de Asiria combatiendo contra Libna, pues oyó que se había ido de Laquis.

9 A nd Sennacherib king of Assyria heard concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He has come to make war against you. And when he heard it, he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying,

Allí el rey de Siria se enteró de que Tirhaca, rey de Etiopía, había salido para hacerle guerra, y volvió a enviar embajadores a Ezequías diciendo:

10 S ay this to Hezekiah king of Judah: Let not your God on Whom you rely deceive you by saying, Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.

«Así diréis a Ezequías, rey de Judá: “Que no te engañe el Dios en quien tú confías, diciéndote: ‘Jerusalén no será entregada en manos del rey de Asiria.’

11 B ehold, you have heard what the Assyrian kings have done to all lands, destroying them utterly. And shall you be delivered?

Has oído lo que han hecho los reyes de Asiria a todas las tierras que han destruido. ¿Vas a escapar tú?

12 H ave the gods of the nations delivered those whom my ancestors have destroyed, as Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden who were in Telassar?

¿Acaso libraron sus dioses a las naciones que mis padres destruyeron, esto es, a Gozán, Harán, Resef, y a los hijos de Edén que estaban en Telasar?

13 W here are the kings of Hamath, of Arpad, of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?

¿Dónde está el rey de Hamat, el rey de Arfad, y el rey de la ciudad de Sefarvaim, de Hena y de Iva?”»

14 H ezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it. And he went up into the house of the Lord and spread it before the Lord.

Ezequías tomó la carta de manos de los embajadores. Después de leerla subió a la casa de Jehová y la extendió delante de Jehová.

15 A nd Hezekiah prayed: O Lord, the God of Israel, Who is enthroned above the cherubim, You are the God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made the heavens and the earth.

Entonces oró Ezequías delante de Jehová diciendo: «Jehová, Dios de Israel, que moras entre los querubines, sólo tú eres Dios de todos los reinos de la tierra. Tú hiciste el cielo y la tierra.

16 L ord, bow down Your ear and hear; Lord, open Your eyes and see; hear the words of Sennacherib which he has sent to mock, reproach, insult, and defy the living God.

Inclina, Jehová, tu oído y oye; abre, Jehová, tus ojos y mira. Oye las palabras que Senaquerib ha enviado a decirme para blasfemar contra el Dios viviente.

17 I t is true, Lord, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste the nations and their lands

Es verdad, Jehová, que los reyes de Asiria han destruido las naciones y sus tierras,

18 A nd have cast the gods of those peoples into the fire, for they were not gods but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone. So they have destroyed them.

y que han echado al fuego a sus dioses, por cuanto ellos no eran dioses, sino obra de manos humanas, de madera o de piedra, y por eso los destruyeron.

19 N ow therefore, O Lord our God, I beseech You, save us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know and understand that You, O Lord, are God alone.

Ahora, pues, Jehová, Dios nuestro, sálvanos, te ruego, de sus manos, para que sepan todos los reinos de la tierra que sólo tú, Jehová, eres Dios.»

20 T hen Isaiah son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Your prayer to Me about Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard.

Entonces Isaías hijo de Amoz envió a decir a Ezequías: «Así ha dicho Jehová, Dios de Israel: “He oído lo que me pediste acerca de Senaquerib, rey de Asiria.”

21 T his is the word that the Lord has spoken concerning him: The Virgin Daughter of Zion has despised you and laughed you to scorn; the Daughter of Jerusalem has wagged her head behind you.

»Ésta es la palabra que Jehová ha pronunciado acerca de él: »“La virgen, hija de Sión, te menosprecia, se burla de ti; a tus espaldas mueve su cabeza la hija de Jerusalén.

22 W hom have you mocked and reviled and insulted and blasphemed? Against Whom have you raised your voice and haughtily lifted your eyes? Against the Holy One of Israel!

¿A quién has insultado y contra quién has blasfemado?, ¿contra quién has alzado la voz, y levantado altanero tus ojos? Contra el Santo de Israel.

23 B y your messengers you have mocked, reproached, insulted, and defied the Lord, and have said, With my many chariots I have gone up to the heights of the mountains, to the far recesses of Lebanon. I cut down its tall cedar trees and its choicest cypress trees. I entered its most distant retreat, its densest forest.

Por medio de tus mensajeros has insultado a Jehová y has dicho: ‘Con la multitud de mis carros he subido a las alturas de los montes, a lo más inaccesible del Líbano; cortaré sus altos cedros, sus cipreses más escogidos; me alojaré en sus más remotos lugares, en el bosque de sus feraces campos.

24 I dug wells and drank foreign waters, and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the streams of Egypt.

He cavado y bebido las aguas extrañas, he secado con las plantas de mis pies todos los ríos de Egipto’.

25 H ave you not heard how I ordained long ago what now I have brought to pass? I planned it in olden times, that you should lay waste fortified cities, making them ruinous heaps.

¿Pero nunca oíste que lo hice desde tiempos antiguos, y que lo tengo ideado desde los días de la antigüedad? Pues ahora lo he hecho venir: Tú causarás desolaciones, y reducirás a montones de escombros las ciudades fortificadas.

26 T hat is why their inhabitants had little power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were like plants of the field, the green herb, the grass on the housetops, blasted before it is grown up.

Sus habitantes, impotentes, fueron acobardados y confundidos; vinieron a ser como la hierba del campo, como hortaliza verde, como heno de los terrados, que se marchita antes de madurar.

27 B ut I know your sitting down, your going out, your coming in, and your raging against Me.

He conocido tu situación, todos tus movimientos, y tu furor contra mí.

28 B ecause your raging against Me and your arrogance and careless ease have come to My ears, therefore I will put My hook in your nose and My bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way you came, O king of Assyria.

Por cuanto te has airado contra mí, por cuanto tu arrogancia ha subido a mis oídos, voy a poner mi garfio en tu nariz y mi freno en tus labios, y te haré volver por el camino por el que viniste.

29 A nd this shall be the sign to you: you shall eat this year what grows of itself, also in the second year what springs up voluntarily. But in the third year sow and reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit.

»”Esto te daré por señal, Ezequías: Este año comeréis lo que nacerá de suyo, y el segundo año lo que nacerá de suyo. Al tercer año sembraréis y segaréis, plantaréis viñas y comeréis el fruto de ellas.

30 A nd the remnant that has survived of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward.

Lo que haya escapado, lo que haya quedado de la casa de Judá, volverá a echar raíces por debajo y llevará frutos por arriba.

31 F or out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and a band of survivors out of Mount Zion. The zeal of the Lord of hosts shall perform this.

Porque de Jerusalén saldrá un resto, y del monte Sión los que se salven. El celo de Jehová de los ejércitos hará esto.

32 T herefore thus says the Lord concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come into this city or shoot an arrow here or come before it with shield or cast up a siege mound against it.

»”Por tanto, así dice Jehová acerca del rey de Asiria: No entrará en esta ciudad, ni lanzará flechas en ella; ni la enfrentará con escudo, ni levantará contra ella un baluarte.

33 B y the way that he came, by that way shall he return, and he shall not come into this city, says the Lord.

Por el mismo camino que vino, volverá, y no entrará en esta ciudad, dice Jehová.

34 F or I will defend this city to save it, for My own sake and for My servant David’s sake.

Porque yo ampararé esta ciudad para salvarla, por amor a mí mismo, y por amor a David, mi siervo.”»

35 A nd it all came to pass, for that night the Angel of the Lord went forth and slew 185, 000 in the camp of the Assyrians; and when arose early in the morning, behold, all these were dead bodies.

Aconteció que aquella misma noche salió el ángel de Jehová y mató en el campamento de los asirios a ciento ochenta y cinco mil hombres. A la hora de levantarse por la mañana, todo era cuerpos de muertos.

36 S o Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and returned and dwelt at Nineveh.

Entonces Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, partió y regresó a Nínive, donde se quedó.

37 A nd as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons killed him with the sword, and they escaped to the land of Armenia or Ararat. Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.

Y aconteció que mientras él adoraba en el templo de Nisroc, su dios, sus hijos Adramelec y Sarezer lo hirieron a espada y huyeron a tierra de Ararat. En su lugar reinó Esar-hadón, su hijo.
