1 W hen King David dwelt in his house and the Lord had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies,

Quando il re si fu stabilito nel suo palazzo e il Signore gli ebbe dato riposo liberandolo da tutti i nemici che lo circondavano,

2 T he king said to Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells within curtains.

disse al profeta Natan: «Vedi, io abito in un palazzo di cedro e l’arca di Dio sta sotto una tenda».

3 A nd Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.

Natan rispose al re: «Va’, fa’ tutto quello che hai in mente di fare, perché il Signore è con te».

4 T hat night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying,

Ma quella stessa notte la parola del Signore fu rivolta a Natan in questo modo:

5 G o and tell My servant David, Thus says the Lord: Shall you build Me a house in which to dwell?

«Va’ e di’ al mio servo Davide: “Così dice il Signore: Saresti tu quello che mi costruirebbe una casa perché io vi abiti?

6 F or I have not dwelt in a house since I brought the Israelites out of Egypt to this day, but have moved about with a tent for My dwelling.

Ma io non ho abitato in una casa, dal giorno che feci uscire i figli d’Israele dall’Egitto fino a oggi; ho viaggiato sotto una tenda, in un tabernacolo.

7 I n all the places where I have moved with all the Israelites, did I speak a word to any from the tribes of Israel whom I commanded to be shepherd of My people Israel, asking, Why do you not build Me a house of cedar?

Dovunque sono andato, ora qua, ora là, in mezzo a tutti i figli d’Israele, ho forse mai detto a uno dei giudici a cui avevo comandato di pascere il mio popolo d’Israele: Perché non mi costruite una casa di cedro?’”.

8 S o now say this to My servant David, Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be prince over My people Israel.

Ora dunque parlerai così al mio servo Davide: “Così dice il Signore degli eserciti: ‘Io ti presi dall’ovile, da dietro alle pecore, perché tu fossi il principe d’Israele, mio popolo;

9 A nd I was with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like of the great men of the earth.

e sono stato con te dovunque sei andato; ho sterminato davanti a te tutti i tuoi nemici. Io renderò il tuo nome grande come quello dei grandi che sono sulla terra;

10 A nd I will appoint a place for My people Israel and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own and be moved no more. And wicked men shall afflict them no more, as formerly

darò un posto a Israele, mio popolo, e ve lo pianterò perché abiti in casa sua e non sia più turbato e i malvagi non lo opprimano come prima,

11 A nd as from the time that I appointed judges over My people Israel; and I will cause you to rest from all your enemies. Also the Lord declares to you that He will make for you a house:

come facevano nel tempo in cui avevo stabilito dei giudici sul mio popolo, Israele; e ti darò riposo liberandoti da tutti i tuoi nemici. In più il Signore ti annuncia questo: sarà lui che ti fonderà una casa!

12 A nd when your days are fulfilled and you sleep with your fathers, I will set up after you your offspring who shall be born to you, and I will establish his kingdom.

Quando i tuoi giorni saranno compiuti e tu riposerai con i tuoi padri, io innalzerò al trono dopo di te la tua discendenza, il figlio che sarà uscito da te, e stabilirò saldamente il suo regno.

13 H e shall build a house for My Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

Egli costruirà una casa al mio nome e io renderò stabile per sempre il trono del suo regno.

14 I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. When he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the stripes of the sons of men.

Io sarò per lui un padre ed egli mi sarà figlio; e se fa del male, lo castigherò con vergate da uomini e con colpi da figli di uomini,

15 B ut My mercy and loving-kindness shall not depart from him, as I took from Saul, whom I took away from before you.

ma la mia grazia non si ritirerà da lui, come si è ritirata da Saul, che io ho rimosso davanti a te.

16 A nd your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before you; your throne shall be established forever.

La tua casa e il tuo regno saranno saldi per sempre davanti a te e il tuo trono sarà reso stabile per sempre’”».

17 I n accordance with all these words and all this vision Nathan spoke to David.

Natan riferì a Davide tutte queste parole e tutta questa visione.

18 T hen King David went in and sat before the Lord, and said, Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far?

Allora il re Davide andò a presentarsi davanti al Signore e disse: «Chi sono io, Signore, Dio, e che cos’è la mia casa, perché tu mi abbia fatto arrivare fino a questo punto?

19 T hen as if this were a little thing in Your eyes, O Lord God, You have spoken also of Your servant’s house in the far distant future. And this is the law for man, O Lord God!

Questo è parso ancora poca cosa ai tuoi occhi, Signore, Dio; tu hai parlato anche della casa del tuo servo per un lontano avvenire. Questa è l’istruzione per l’uomo, Signore, Dio!

20 W hat more can David say to You? For You know Your servant, O Lord God.

Che potrebbe Davide dirti di più? Tu conosci il tuo servo, Signore, Dio!

21 B ecause of Your promise and as Your own heart dictates, You have done all these astounding things to make Your servant know and understand.

Per amore della tua parola e seguendo il tuo cuore, hai compiuto tutte queste cose per rivelarle al tuo servo.

22 T herefore You are great, O Lord God; for none is like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all our ears to hear.

Tu sei davvero grande, Signore, Dio! Nessuno è pari a te e non c’è altro Dio fuori di te, secondo tutto quello che abbiamo udito con i nostri orecchi.

23 W hat one nation on earth is like Your people Israel, whom God went to redeem to be a people for Himself and to make for Himself a name? You have done great and terrible things for Yourself and for Your land, before Your people, whom You redeemed and delivered for Yourself from Egypt, from the nations and their gods.

E qual popolo è come il tuo popolo, come Israele, l’unica nazione sulla terra che Dio sia venuto a redimere per formare il suo popolo, per farsi un nome, per compiere cose grandi e tremende, cacciando davanti al tuo popolo, che ti sei redento dall’Egitto, delle nazioni con i loro dèi?

24 A nd You have established for Yourself Your people Israel to be Your people forever, and You, Lord, became their God.

Tu hai stabilito il tuo popolo, Israele, perché sia per sempre il tuo popolo; e tu, Signore, sei divenuto il suo Dio.

25 N ow, O Lord God, confirm forever the word You have given as to Your servant and his house; and do as You have said,

Dunque, o Signore, Dio, la parola che hai pronunciata riguardo al tuo servo e alla sua casa mantienila per sempre e fa’ come hai detto.

26 A nd Your name shall be magnified forever, saying, The Lord of hosts is God over Israel; and the house of Your servant David will be made firm before You.

Il tuo nome sia lodato per sempre e si dica: “Il Signore degli eserciti è il Dio d’Israele! La casa del tuo servo Davide sia stabile davanti a te!”

27 F or You, O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, have revealed this to Your servant: I will build you a house. So Your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to You.

Poiché tu, o Signore degli eserciti, Dio d’Israele, hai fatto una rivelazione al tuo servo e gli hai detto: “Io ti edificherò una casa!” Perciò il tuo servo ha avuto il coraggio di rivolgerti questa preghiera.

28 A nd now, O Lord God, You are God, and Your words are truth, and You have promised this good thing to Your servant.

Ora, o Signore, Dio, tu sei Dio, le tue parole sono verità e hai promesso questo bene al tuo servo;

29 T herefore now let it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue forever before You; for You, O Lord God, have spoken it, and with Your blessing let house be blessed forever.

piacciati dunque benedire ora la casa del tuo servo, perché essa sia sempre davanti a te! Poiché tu, o Signore, Dio, sei colui che ha parlato e per la tua benedizione la casa del tuo servo sarà benedetta per sempre!»
