1 T o the Overseer. -- `Concerning the Lily of Testimony,' a secret treasure of David, to teach, in his striving with Aram-Naharaim, and with Aram-Zobah, and Joab turneth back and smiteth Edom in the valley of Salt -- twelve thousand. O God, Thou hadst cast us off, Thou hadst broken us -- hadst been angry! -- Thou dost turn back to us.
O God, You have rejected us and cast us off, broken down, and scattered us; You have been angry—O restore us and turn Yourself to us again!
2 T hou hast caused the land to tremble, Thou hast broken it, Heal its breaches, for it hath moved.
You have made the land to quake and tremble, You have rent it; repair its breaches, for it shakes and totters.
3 T hou hast shewn Thy people a hard thing, Thou hast caused us to drink wine of trembling.
You have made Your people suffer hard things; You have given us to drink wine that makes us reel and be dazed.
4 T hou hast given to those fearing thee an ensign. To be lifted up as an ensign Because of truth. Selah.
You have set up a banner for those who fear and worshipfully revere You, a standard displayed because of the truth. Selah!
5 T hat Thy beloved ones may be drawn out, Save Thy right hand, and answer us.
That Your beloved ones may be delivered, save with Your right hand and answer us.
6 G od hath spoken in His holiness: I exult -- I apportion Shechem, And the valley of Succoth I measure,
God has spoken in His holiness: I will rejoice, I will divide and portion out Shechem and the Valley of Succoth.
7 M ine Gilead, and mine Manasseh, And Ephraim the strength of my head, Judah my lawgiver,
Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine; Ephraim also is My helmet (the defense of My head); Judah is My scepter and My lawgiver.
8 M oab my pot for washing, over Edom I cast my shoe, Shout, concerning me, O Philistia.
Moab is My washpot; upon Edom I cast My shoe in triumph; over Philistia I raise the shout of victory.
9 W ho doth bring me a city of bulwarks? Who hath led me unto Edom?
Who will bring me into the strong city ? Who will lead me into Edom?
10 I s it not Thou, O God? hast Thou cast us off? And dost Thou not go forth, O God, with our hosts!
Have You not rejected us, O God? And will You not go forth, O God, with our armies?
11 G ive to us help from adversity, And vain the deliverance of man.
O give us help against the adversary, for vain (ineffectual and to no purpose) is the help or salvation of man.
12 I n God we do mightily, And He treadeth down our adversaries!
Through God we shall do valiantly, for He it is Who shall tread down our adversaries.
