1 A s to sons of Reuben, first-born of Israel -- for he the first-born, and on account of his profaning the couch of his father hath his birthright been given to the sons of Joseph son of Israel, and not to be reckoned by genealogy for the birthright,

Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel. For was the eldest, but because he polluted his father’s couch his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph son of Israel; so the genealogy is not to be reckoned according to the birthright.

2 f or Judah hath been mighty over his brother, and for leader above him, and the birthright to Joseph.

Judah prevailed above his brethren, and from him came the prince and leader; yet the birthright was Joseph’s.

3 S ons of Reuben, first-born of Israel: Hanoch, and Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.

The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.

4 S ons of Joel: Shemaiah his son, Gog his son, Shimei his son,

The sons of Joel: Shemaiah his son, Gog his son, Shimei his son,

5 M icah his son, Reaiah his son, Baal his son,

Micah his son, Reaiah his son, Baal his son,

6 B eerah his son, whom Tilgath-Pilneser king of Asshur removed; he prince of the Reubenite.

Beerah his son, whom Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria carried away captive; he was a prince of the Reubenites.

7 A nd his brethren, by their families, in the genealogy of their generations, heads: Jeiel, and Zechariah,

And his brethren by their families, when the genealogy of their generations was reckoned: the chief Jeiel, and Zechariah,

8 a nd Bela son of Azaz, son of Shema, son of Joel -- he is dwelling in Aroer, even unto Nebo and Baal-Meon;

Bela son of Azaz, the son of Shema, the son of Joel, who dwelt in Aroer as far as Nebo and Baal-meon.

9 a nd at the east he dwelt even unto the entering in of the wilderness, even from the river Phrat, for their cattle were multiplied in the land of Gilead.

Eastward inhabited the land as far as the entrance into the desert this side of the river Euphrates, because their cattle had multiplied in the land of Gilead.

10 A nd in the days of Saul they have made war with the Hagarites, who fall by their hand, and they dwell in their tents over all the face of the east of Gilead.

In the days of Saul they made war with the Hagrites or Ishmaelites, who fell by their hands; they dwelt in their tents in all the land east of Gilead.

11 A nd the sons of Gad, over-against them have dwelt in the land of Bashan unto Salcah,

The children of Gad who dwelt opposite them in the land of Bashan, as far as Salecah:

12 J oel the head, and Shapham the second, and Jaanai and Shaphat in Bashan;

Joel the chief, Shapham the next, Janai, and Shaphat in Bashan.

13 a nd their brethren of the house of their fathers Michael, and Meshullam, and Sheba, and Jorai, and Jachan, and Zia, and Heber, seven.

Their kinsmen of the houses of their fathers: Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia, and Eber—seven in all.

14 T hese sons of Abihail son of Huri, son of Jaroah, son of Gilead, son of Michael, son of Jeshishai, son of Jahdo, son of Buz;

These were the sons of Abihail son of Huri, the son of Jaroah, the son of Gilead, the son of Michael, the son of Jeshishai, the son of Jahdo, the son of Buz.

15 A hi son of Abdiel, son of Guni, head of the house of their fathers;

Ahi son of Abdiel, the son of Guni, was chief in their fathers’ houses.

16 a nd they dwell in Gilead in Bashan, and in her small towns, and in all suburbs of Sharon, upon their outskirts;

They dwelt in Gilead, in Bashan and in its towns, and in all the suburbs and pasturelands of Sharon to their limits.

17 a ll of them reckoned themselves by genealogy in the days of Jotham king of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.

All these were enrolled by genealogies in the days of Jotham king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.

18 S ons of Reuben, and the Gadite, and the half of the tribe of Manasseh, of sons of valour, men bearing shield and sword, and treading bow, and taught in battle, forty and four thousand and seven hundred and sixty, going out to the host.

The sons of Reuben, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh—valiant men able to bear buckler and sword and to shoot with bow and skillful in war—were 44, 760 able and ready to go forth to war.

19 A nd they make war with the Hagarites, and Jetur, and Naphish, and Nodab,

And made war with the Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab.

20 a nd they are helped against them, and the Hagarites are given into their hand, and all who with them, for they cried to God in battle, and He was entreated of them, because they trusted in Him.

They were given help against them, and the Hagrites or Ishmaelites were delivered into their hands, and all who were allied with them, for they cried to God in the battle; and He granted their entreaty, because they relied on, clung to, and trusted in Him.

21 A nd they take captive their cattle, of their camels fifty thousand, and of sheep two hundred and fifty thousand, and of asses two thousand, and of human beings a hundred thousand;

And took away their adversaries’ herds: of their camels 50, 000, and of sheep 250, 000, and of donkeys 2, 000, and of the lives of men 100, 000.

22 f or many have fallen pierced, for of God the battle; and they dwell in their stead till the removal.

For a great number fell mortally wounded, because the battle was God’s. And dwelt in their territory until the captivity.

23 A nd the sons of the half of the tribe of Manasseh dwelt in the land, from Bashan unto Baal-Hermon, and Senir, and mount Hermon, they have multiplied.

And the people of the half-tribe of Manasseh dwelt in the land; their settlements spread from Bashan to Baal-hermon, Senir, and Mount Hermon.

24 A nd these heads of the house of their fathers, even Epher, and Ishi, and Eliel, and Azriel, and Jeremiah, and Hodaviah, and Jahdiel, men mighty in valour, men of name, heads to the house of their fathers.

And these were the heads of their fathers’ houses: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, and Jahdiel, mighty men of strength of mind and spirit, famous men, and heads of the houses of their fathers.

25 A nd they trespass against the God of their fathers, and go a-whoring after the gods of the peoples of the land whom God destroyed from their presence;

They transgressed against the God of their fathers and played the harlot after the gods of the native peoples, whom God had destroyed before them.

26 a nd stir up doth the God of Israel the spirit of Pul king of Asshur, and the spirit of Tilgath-Pilneser king of Asshur, and he removeth them -- even the Reubenite, and the Gadite, and the half of the tribe of Manasseh -- and bringeth them in to Halah, and Habor, and Hara, and the river of Gozan unto this day.

So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria, the spirit of Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria, and he carried them away, the Reubenites, Gadites, and half-tribe of Manasseh and brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river Gozan, to this day.
