1 E cco, il Signore, Dio degli eserciti, sta per togliere a Gerusalemme e a Giuda ogni risorsa e ogni appoggio, ogni risorsa di pane e ogni risorsa d’acqua,

For, lo, the Lord, Jehovah of Hosts, Is turning aside from Jerusalem, And from Judah, stay and staff, Every stay of bread, and every stay of water.

2 i l prode e il guerriero, il giudice e il profeta, l’indovino e l’anziano,

Hero and man of war, judge and prophet, And diviner and elder,

3 i l capo di cinquantina e il notabile, il consigliere, l’artefice esperto e l’abile incantatore.

Head of fifty, and accepted of faces, And counsellor, and the wise of artificers, And the intelligent of charmers.

4 I o darò loro dei ragazzini come prìncipi, e dei bambini domineranno su di essi.

And I have made youths their heads, And sucklings rule over them.

5 I l popolo sarà oppresso, uomo da uomo, ciascuno dal suo prossimo; il giovane sarà arrogante con il vecchio, l’infame contro colui che è onorato.

And the people hath exacted -- man upon man, Even a man on his neighbour, Enlarge themselves do the youths against the aged, And the lightly esteemed against the honoured.

6 Q uando uno prenderà il fratello nella sua casa paterna e gli dirà: «Tu hai un mantello, sii nostro capo, prendi in mano queste rovine»,

When one layeth hold on his brother, the house of his father, the garment, `Come, a ruler thou art to us, And this ruin under thy hand.'

7 e gli, in quel giorno, alzerà la voce e dirà: «Io non sarò vostro medico, nella mia casa non c’è né pane né mantello; non fatemi capo del popolo!»

He lifteth up, in that day, saying: `I am not a binder up, And in my house is neither bread nor garment, Ye do not make me a ruler of the people.'

8 I nfatti Gerusalemme vacilla e Giuda crolla, perché la loro lingua e le loro opere sono contro il Signore, al punto da provocare l’ira del suo sguardo maestoso.

For stumbled hath Jerusalem, and Judah hath fallen, For their tongue and their doings against Jehovah, To provoke the eyes of His glory.

9 L ’aspetto del loro volto testimonia contro di essi, proclamano il loro peccato, come Sodoma; non lo nascondono. Guai a loro, perché procurano a se stessi del male.

The appearance of their faces witnessed against them, And their sin, as Sodom, they declared, They have not hidden! Wo to their soul, For they have done to themselves evil.

10 D itelo che il giusto avrà del bene, perché egli mangerà il frutto delle sue opere!

Say ye to the righteous, that good, Because the fruit of their doings they eat.

11 G uai all’empio! Il male ricadrà sul suo capo, perché gli sarà reso quanto le sue mani hanno fatto.

Wo to the wicked -- evil, Because the deed of his hand is done to him.

12 I l mio popolo ha come oppressori dei bambini, e delle donne dominano su di lui. Popolo mio, coloro che ti guidano ti sviano e distruggono il sentiero per cui devi passare!

My people -- its exactors sucklings, And women have ruled over it. My people -- thy eulogists are causing to err, And the way of thy paths swallowed up.

13 I l Signore si presenta per discutere la causa, e sta in piedi per giudicare i popoli.

Jehovah hath stood up to plead, And He is standing to judge the peoples.

14 I l Signore entra in giudizio con gli anziani del suo popolo e con i prìncipi di esso: «Voi siete quelli che hanno devastato la vigna! Le spoglie del povero sono nelle vostre case!

Jehovah into judgment doth enter With elders of His people, and its heads: `And ye, ye have consumed the vineyard, Plunder of the poor in your houses.

15 C on quale diritto opprimete il mio popolo e pestate la faccia agli indifesi?», dice il Signore, Dio degli eserciti.

What -- to you? ye bruise My people, And the faces of the poor ye grind.' An affirmation of the Lord, Jehovah of Hosts, And Jehovah saith:

16 I l Signore dice ancora: «Poiché le figlie di Sion sono altere, camminano con il collo teso, lanciando sguardi provocanti, procedendo a piccoli passi e facendo tintinnare gli anelli dei loro piedi,

`Because that daughters of Zion have been haughty, And they walk stretching out the neck, And deceiving the eyes, Walking and mincing they go, And with their feet they make a tinkling,

17 i l Signore farà venire la tigna sulla testa delle figlie di Sion, il Signore metterà a nudo le loro vergogne.

The Lord also hath scabbed The crown of the head of daughters of Zion, And Jehovah their simplicity exposeth.

18 I n quel giorno il Signore toglierà via il lusso degli anelli dei piedi, delle reti e delle mezzelune,

In that day doth the Lord turn aside The beauty of the tinkling ornaments, And of the embroidered works, And of the round tires like moons,

19 d egli orecchini, dei braccialetti, dei veli,

Of the drops, and the bracelets, and the mufflers,

20 d ei diademi, delle catenelle dei piedi, delle cinture, dei vasetti di profumo, degli amuleti,

Of the bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, And of the bands, And of the perfume boxes, and the amulets,

21 d egli anelli, dei cerchietti da naso,

Of the seals, and of the nose-rings,

22 d egli abiti da festa, delle mantelline, degli scialli, delle borse,

Of the costly apparel, and of the mantles, And of the coverings, and of the purses,

23 d egli specchi, delle camicie finissime, dei turbanti e delle mantiglie.

Of the mirrors, and of the linen garments, And of the hoods, and of the vails,

24 I nvece di profumo si avrà fetore; invece di cintura, una corda; invece di riccioli, calvizie; invece di un ampio mantello, un sacco stretto; un marchio di fuoco invece di bellezza.

And it hath been, instead of spice is muck, And instead of a girdle, a rope, And instead of curled work, baldness, And instead of a stomacher a girdle of sackcloth.

25 I tuoi uomini cadranno di spada, e i tuoi prodi in battaglia.

For instead of glory, thy men by sword do fall, And thy might in battle.

26 L e porte di Sion gemeranno e saranno in lutto; tutta desolata, siederà per terra.

And lamented and mourned have her openings, Yea, she hath been emptied, on the earth she sitteth!
