1 M a l'Eterno mi disse: «Anche se Mosè, e Samuele, si presentassero davanti a me, il mio cuore non si piegherebbe verso questo popolo; caccialo via dalla mia presenza; che se ne vada!

And Jehovah saith unto me: Though Moses and Samuel should stand before Me, My soul is not toward this people, Send from before My face, and they go out.

2 S e poi ti dovessero dire: "Dove andremo? dirai loro: Cosí dice l'Eterno: Alla morte i destinati alla morte, alla spada i destinati alla spada, alla fame i destinati alla fame, alla cattività i destinati alla cattività.

And it hath come to pass, when they say to thee, Whither do we go out? that thou hast said unto them, Thus said Jehovah: Those who for death -- to death, And those who are for the sword, to the sword, And those who are for famine, to famine, And those who are for captivity, to captivity.

3 I o stabilirò sopra di loro quattro specie di flagelli», dice l'Eterno: «la spada per uccidere, i cani per sbranare, gli uccelli del cielo e le bestie della terra per divorare e distruggere.

And I have appointed over them four kinds, an affirmation of Jehovah, The sword to slay, and the dogs to drag, And the fowl of the heavens, And the beast of the earth, to consume and to devour.

4 L i farò essere maltrattati per tutti i regni della terra a causa di Manasse, figlio di Ezechia, re di Giuda, per ciò che ha fatto in Gerusalemme.

And I have given them for a trembling To all kingdoms of the earth, Because of Manasseh son of Hezekiah king of Judah, For that which he did in Jerusalem.

5 C hi infatti avrebbe pietà di te, o Gerusalemme, chi farebbe cordoglio per te? Chi si scomoderebbe per domandare come stai?

For who hath pity on thee, O Jerusalem? And who doth bemoan for thee? And who turneth aside to ask of thy welfare?

6 T u mi hai respinto», dice l'Eterno, «mi hai voltato le spalle. Perciò io stenderò la mano contro di te e ti distruggerò; sono stanco di pentirmi.

Thou -- thou hast left Me -- an affirmation of Jehovah, Backward thou goest, And I stretch out My hand against thee, And I destroy thee, I have been weary of repenting,

7 L i disperderò col ventilabro alle porte del paese, li priverò di figli e farò perire Il mio popolo, perché non si convertono dalle loro vie.

And I scatter them with a fan, in the gates the land, I bereaved, I have destroyed My people, From their ways they turned not back.

8 R enderò le sue vedove piú numerose della sabbia del mare. Farò venire contro di loro, contro la madre dei giovani, un devastatore in pieno giorno, farò cadere improvvisamente su di lei angoscia e terrore.

Its widows have been more to Me than the sand of the seas, I brought in to them -- against the mother -- A young man -- a spoiler -- at noon. I caused to fall upon her suddenly, wrath and trouble.

9 C olei che ha partorito sette, figli languisce ed esala lo spirito; il suo sole tramonta mentre è ancora giorno; è coperta di vergogna e confusa. Consegnerò i loro superstiti alla spada in balìa dei loro nemici», dice l'Eterno.

Languished hath the bearer of seven, She hath breathed out her spirit, Gone in hath her sun while yet day, It hath been ashamed and confounded, And their residue to the sword I give up before their enemies, An affirmation of Jehovah.

10 G uai a me, madre mia, perché mi hai partorito come uomo di lite e di contesa per tutto il paese. Non ho dato nulla in prestito, né altri hanno prestato a me eppure tutti mi maledicono.

Wo to me, my mother, For thou hast borne me a man of strife, And a man of contention to all the land, I have not lent on usury, Nor have they lent on usury to me -- All of them are reviling me.

11 L 'Eterno dice: «Certamente ti libererò per sempre, certamente farò si che il nemico ti supplichi nel tempo dell'avversità e nel tempo dell'angoscia.

Jehovah said, Did I not direct thee for good? Did not I intercede for thee in a time of evil, And in a time of adversity, with the enemy?

12 P uò uno spezzare il ferro, il ferro del nord e il bronzo?

Doth one break iron -- northern iron, and brass?

13 L a tua ricchezza e i tuoi tesori li abbandonerò al saccheggio senza alcun prezzo per tutti i tuoi peccati e in tutti i tuoi confini.

Thy strength and thy treasures For a prey I do give -- not for price, Even for all thy sins, and in all thy borders.

14 E ti farò passare con i tuoi nemici in un paese che non conosci perché un fuoco si è acceso nella mia ira, che arderà contro di voi».

And I have caused thine enemies To pass over into the land -- Thou hast not known, For a fire hath been kindled in Mine anger, Against you it doth burn.

15 T u lo sai, o Eterno, ricordati di me e visitami, e vendicami dei miei persecutori; nella lentezza della tua ira non portarmi via; sappi che per amor tuo ho portato l'obbrobrio.

Thou, Thou hast known, O Jehovah, Remember me, and inspect me, And take vengeance for me of my pursuers, In Thy long-suffering take me not away, Know -- I have borne for Thee reproach.

16 A ppena ho trovato le tue parole, le ho divorate, la tua parola è stata per me la gioia e l'allegrezza del mio cuore, perché il tuo nome è invocato su di me, o Eterno, DIO degli eserciti.

Thy words have been found, and I eat them, And Thy word is to me for a joy, And for the rejoicing of my heart, For Thy name is called on me, O Jehovah, God of Hosts.

17 I o non mi sono seduto nell'assemblea degli schernitori, né mi sono rallegrato; ma a motivo della tua mano mi sono seduto solitario, perché tu mi avevi riempito d'indignazione.

I have not sat in an assembly of deriders, Nor do I exult, because of thy hand, -- Alone I have sat, For indignation Thou hast filled me.

18 P erché il mio dolore è senza fine e la mia piaga incurabile rifiuta di guarire? Vuoi essere per me come un ruscello che vien meno, come acqua che non dà affidamento?

Why hath my pain been perpetual? And my wound incurable? It hath refused to be healed, Thou art surely to me as a failing stream, Waters not stedfast.

19 P erciò cosí dice l'Eterno: «Se tu ritorni a me, io ti ristabilirò e tu starai davanti a mè. Se tu separi il prezioso dal vile, tu sarai come la mia bocca; essi ritorneranno a te, ma tu non devi tornare a loro.

Therefore, thus said Jehovah: If thou turnest back, then I bring thee back, Before Me thou dost stand, And if thou bringest out the precious from the vile, As My mouth thou art! They -- they turn back unto thee, And thou dost not turn back unto them.

20 I O ti renderò per questo popolo un forte muro di bronzo;

And I have made thee to this people For a wall -- brazen -- fenced, And they have fought against thee, And they do not prevail against thee, For with thee I to save thee, And to deliver thee -- an affirmation of Jehovah,

21 c ombatteranno contro di te, ma non potranno vincerti, perché io sarò con te per salvarti e per liberarti», dice l'Eterno. «Ti libererò dalla mano dei malvagi e ti riscatterò dalla mano dei violenti».

And I have delivered thee from the hand of evil doers, And I have ransomed thee From the hand of the terrible!
