1 I n quel giorno si canterà questo cantico nel paese di Giuda: «Noi abbiamo una città forte; Dio vi ha posto la salvezza per mura e per bastioni.

In that day sung is this song in the land of Judah: `We have a strong city, Salvation He doth make walls and bulwark.

2 A prite le porte ed entri la nazione giusta, che mantiene la fedeltà».

Open ye the gates, that enter may a righteous nation, Preserving stedfastness.

3 A lla mente che riposa in te tu conservi una pace perfetta, perché confida in te.

An imagination supported Thou fortifiest peace -- peace! For in Thee it is confident.

4 C onfidate nell'Eterno per sempre perché l'Eterno, sí l'Eterno, è la roccia eterna.

Trust ye in Jehovah for ever, For in Jah Jehovah a rock of ages,

5 E gli ha umiliato quelli che stavano in alto, ha abbassato la città elevata, l'ha abbassata fino a terra, l'ha gettata nella polvere;

For He bowed down the dwellers on high, A city set on high He maketh low, He maketh it low unto the earth, He causeth it to come unto the dust,

6 i piedi la calpestano, i piedi stessi del povero e i passi dei meschini.

Tread it down doth a foot, Feet of the poor -- steps of the weak.

7 L a via del giusto è diritta; o giusto Dio, tu appiani il sentiero del giusto.

The path for the righteous uprightness, O upright One, The path of the righteous Thou dost ponder.

8 S í, nella via dei tuoi giudizi, o Eterno, noi ti abbiamo aspettato. Il desiderio della nostra anima si volge al tuo nome e al tuo ricordo

Also, the path of Thy judgments, O Jehovah, we have waited Thee, To Thy name and to Thy remembrance the desire of the soul.

9 C on la mia anima ti desidero di notte, sí, con lo spirito che è dentro di me ti cerco al mattino presto; poiché quando i tuoi giudizi si manifestano sulla terra, gli abitanti del mondo imparano la giustizia

my soul I desired Thee in the night, Also, my spirit within me I seek Thee earnestly, For when Thy judgments on the earth, The inhabitants of the world have learned righteousness.

10 S e si fa grazia all'empio, egli non imparerà la giustizia; agirà perversamente nel paese della rettitudine e non potrà vedere la maestà dell'Eterno.

The wicked findeth favour, He hath not learned righteousness, In a land of straightforwardness he dealeth perversely, And seeth not the excellency of Jehovah.

11 O Eterno, la tua mano è levata, ma essi non la scorgono. Essi però vedranno il tuo zelo per il tuo popolo e saranno confusi; sí, il fuoco dei tuoi nemici li divorerà

O Jehovah, high Thy hand -- they see not, They see the zeal of the people, and are ashamed, Also, the fire -- Thine adversaries, consumeth them.

12 O Eterno, tu stabilirai la pace per noi, perché tu compi per noi ogni nostra opera

O Jehovah, Thou appointest peace to us, For, all our works also Thou hast wrought for us.

13 O Eterno, DIO nostro, altri signori, all'infuori di te, ci hanno dominato; ma solo per te ricordiamo il tuo nome.

O Jehovah our God, lords have ruled us besides Thee, Only, by Thee we make mention of Thy name.

14 I morti non rivivranno piú; i trapassati non risorgeranno piú, perciò tu li hai puniti, li hai distrutti e hai fatto sparire ogni loro ricordo.

Dead -- they live not, Rephaim, they rise not, Therefore Thou hast inspected and dost destroy them, Yea, thou destroyest all their memory.

15 T u hai accresciuto la nazione, o Eterno, hai accresciuto la nazione, ti sei glorificato; hai esteso tutti i confini del paese

Thou hast added to the nation, O Jehovah, Thou hast added to the nation, Thou hast been honoured, Thou hast put far off all the ends of earth.

16 O Eterno, nell'avversità si sono ricordati di te, hanno effuso una preghiera, quando il tuo castigo li colpiva.

O Jehovah, in distress they missed Thee, They have poured out a whisper, Thy chastisement on them.

17 C ome una donna incinta che sta per partorire si contorce e grida nelle sue doglie, cosí siamo stati noi davanti a te, o Eterno

When a pregnant woman cometh near to the birth, She is pained -- she crieth in her pangs, So we have been from Thy face, O Jehovah.

18 A bbiamo concepito, abbiamo sentito le doglie, come se dovessimo partorire, ma era solo vento; non abbiamo recato alcuna salvezza al paese e gli abitanti del mondo non sono caduti

We have conceived, we have been pained. We have brought forth as it were wind, Salvation we do not work in the earth, Nor do the inhabitants of the world fall.

19 I tuoi morti rivivranno, assieme al mio cadavere risorgeranno. Svegliatevi ed esultate o voi che abitate nella polvere! Poiché la tua rugiada è come la rugiada di una luce sfavillante e la terra darà alla luce i morti.

`Thy dead live -- My dead body they rise. Awake and sing, ye dwellers in the dust, For the dew of herbs thy dew, And the land of Rephaim thou causest to fall.

20 V a o popolo mio, entra nelle tue camere, chiudi le tue porte dietro a te; nasconditi per un istante, finché sia passata l'indignazione.

Come, My people, enter into thy inner chambers, And shut thy doors behind thee, Hide thyself shortly a moment till the indignation pass over.

21 P oiché ecco, l'Eterno esce dalla sua dimora per punire l'iniquità degli abitanti della terra; la terra metterà allo scoperto il suo sangue versato e non nasconderà più i suoi uccisi.

For, lo, Jehovah is coming out of His place, To charge the iniquity of the inhabitant of the earth upon him, And revealed hath the earth her blood, Nor doth she cover any more her slain!'
