1 O r Joab, figlio di Tseruiah, si accorse che il cuore del re era preoccupato per Absalom.

And Joab son of Zeruial knoweth that the heart of the king on Absalom,

2 C osí Joab mandò qualcuno a Tekoa e ne fece venire una donna saggia, alla quale disse: «Fingi di essere in lutto e indossa una veste da lutto; non ungerti con olio, ma comportati come una donna che pianga da molto tempo un morto.

and Joab sendeth to Tekoah, and taketh thence a wise woman, and saith unto her, `Feign thyself a mourner, I pray thee, and put on, I pray thee, garments of mourning, and anoint not thyself with oil, and thou hast been as a woman these many days mourning for the dead,

3 V a' quindi dal re e parlagli in questo modo». E Joab le mise in bocca ciò che doveva dire.

and thou hast gone unto the king, and spoken unto him, according to this word;' and Joab putteth the words into her mouth.

4 L a donna di Tekoa andò dunque a parlare al re, si gettò con la faccia a terra, si prostrò e disse: «Aiuto, o re!».

And the woman of Tekoah speaketh unto the king, and falleth on her face to the earth, and doth obeisance, and saith, `Save, O king.'

5 I l re le disse: «Che hai?». Ella rispose: «Purtroppo sono una vedova e mio marito è morto.

And the king saith to her, `What -- to thee?' and she saith, `Truly a widow woman I, and my husband dieth,

6 L a tua serva aveva due figli, ma i due ebbero una lite fra di loro nei campi e non essendoci nessuno a separarli, uno colpí l'altro e l'uccise.

and thy maid-servant hath two sons; and they strive both of them in a field, and there is no deliverer between them, and the one smiteth the other, and putteth him to death;

7 O ra tutta la parentela è insorta contro la tua serva, dicendo: "Consegnaci colui che ha ucciso il fratello, affinché lo facciamo morire per la vita di suo fratello che egli ha ucciso e per sterminare anche l'erede". In questo modo spegneranno l'unico tizzone acceso che mi è rimasto e non lasceranno a mio marito né nome né discendenza sulla faccia della terra».

and lo, the whole family hath risen against thy maid-servant, and say, Give up him who smiteth his brother, and we put him to death for the life of his brother whom he hath slain, and we destroy also the heir; and they have quenched my coal which is left -- so as not to set to my husband a name and remnant on the face of the ground.'

8 I l re disse alla donna: «Va' a casa tua io darò ordini a tuo riguardo».

And the king saith unto the woman, `Go to thine house, and I give charge concerning thee.'

9 L a donna di Tekoa disse al re: «O re mio signore, la colpa cada su di me e sulla casa di mio padre, ma il re e il suo trono siano innocenti».

And the woman of Tekoah saith unto the king, `On me, my lord, O king, the iniquity, and on the house of my father; and the king and his throne innocent.'

10 I l re disse: «Se qualcuno ti dovesse dire qualcosa, conducilo da me e vedrai che non ti molesterà piú».

And the king saith, `He who speaketh unto thee, and thou hast brought him unto me, then he doth not add any more to come against thee.'

11 A llora ella disse: «Si ricordi, per favore, il re, dell'Eterno, il tuo DIO, affinché il vendicatore del sangue non continui piú a distruggere perché mio figlio non sia sterminato». Egli rispose: «Com'è vero che l'Eterno vive, non cadrà a terra un sol capello di tuo figlio!».

And she saith, `Let, I pray thee, the king remember by Jehovah thy God, that the redeemer of blood add not to destroy, and they destroy not my son;' and he saith, `Jehovah liveth; if there doth fall of the hair of thy son to the earth.'

12 A llora la donna disse: «Deh, permetti che la tua serva dica ancora una parola al re, mio signore!». Egli rispose: «Di' pure».

And the woman saith, `Let, I pray thee, thy maid-servant speak unto my lord the king a word;' and he saith, `Speak.'

13 R iprese la donna: «Perché hai tu ideato una cosa del genere contro il popolo di DIO? Parlando in questo modo, infatti, il re è in qualche modo colpevole, perché il re non fa ritornare chi è in esilio.

And the woman saith, `And why hast thou thought thus concerning the people of God? yea, the king is speaking this thing as a guilty one, in that the king hath not brought back his outcast;

14 N oi dobbiamo morire e siamo come acqua versata in terra, che non si può raccogliere, ma DIO non toglie la vita, ma escogita il modo col quale chi è in esilio non rimanga lontano da lui.

for we do surely die, and as water which is running down to the earth, which is not gathered, and God doth not accept a person, and hath devised devices in that the outcast is not outcast by Him.

15 O ra sono venuta a parlare di questa cosa al re mio signore, perché il popolo mi ha fatto paura; e la tua serva ha detto: "Voglio parlare al re; forse il re farà ciò che la sua serva gli dirà.

`And now that I have come to speak unto the king my lord this word, because the people made me afraid, and thy maid-servant saith, Let me speak, I pray thee, unto the king; it may be the king doth do the word of his handmaid,

16 I l re ascolterà la sua serva e la libererà dalle mani di quelli che vogliono sterminare me e mio figlio dalla eredità di DIO".

for the king doth hearken to deliver his handmaid out of the paw of the man to destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God,

17 L a tua serva diceva: "Oh, possa la parola del re, mio signore, darmi conforto perché il re mio signore è come un angelo di DIO nel discernere il bene e il male". L'Eterno, il tuo DIO, sia con te».

and thy maid-servant saith, Let, I pray thee, the word of my lord the king be for ease; for as a messenger of God so my lord the king, to understand the good and the evil; and Jehovah thy God is with thee.'

18 I l re rispose e disse alla donna: «Ti prego, non nascondermi nulla di ciò che ti domanderò». La donna disse: «Parli pure il re, mio signore».

And the king answereth and saith unto the woman, `Do not, I pray thee, hide from me the thing that I am asking thee;' and the woman saith, `Let, I pray thee, my lord the king speak.'

19 A llora il re disse: «La mano di Joab non è forse con te in tutto questo?». La donna rispose: «Com'è vero che tu vivi, o re mio signore, la cosa sta né piú né meno come ha detto il re mio signore, è stato infatti il tuo servo Joab che mi ha dato questi ordini e ha messo tutte queste parole in bocca alla tua serva.

And the king saith, `Is the hand of Joab with thee in all this?' And the woman answereth and saith, `Thy soul liveth, my lord, O king, none to the right or to the left from all that my lord the king hath spoken; for thy servant Joab he commanded me, and he put in the mouth of thy maid-servant all these words;

20 I l tuo servo Joab ha fatto questo per produrre un cambiamento nella presente situazione; ma il mio signore ha la stessa sapienza di un angelo di DIO per capire tutto ciò che avviene sulla terra».

in order to bring round the appearance of the thing hath thy servant Joab done this thing, and my lord wise, according to the wisdom of a messenger of God, to know all that in the land.'

21 A llora il re disse a Joab: «Ecco, farò proprio questo. Va' dunque e fa' tornare il giovane Absalom».

And the king saith unto Joab, `Lo, I pray thee, thou hast done this thing; and go, bring back the young man Absalom.'

22 A llora Joab si gettò con la faccia a terra, si prostrò e benedisse il re. Poi Joab disse: «Oggi il tuo servo riconosce di aver trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi o re, mio signore, perché il re ha fatto ciò che il suo servo ha chiesto».

And Joab falleth on his face to the earth, and doth obeisance, and blesseth the king, and Joab saith, `To-day hath thy servant known that I have found grace in thine eyes, my lord, O king, in that the king hath done the word of his servant.'

23 C osí Joab si levò e andò a Gheshur, e condusse Absalom a Gerusalemme.

And Joab riseth and goeth to Geshur, and bringeth in Absalom to Jerusalem,

24 M a il re disse: «Si ritiri in casa sua e non veda la mia faccia!». Cosí Absalom si ritirò in casa sua e non vide la faccia del re.

and the king saith, `Let him turn round unto his house, and my face he doth not see.' And Absalom turneth round unto his house, and the face of the king he hath not seen.

25 O r in tutto Israele non vi era uomo che fosse lodato per la sua bellezza come Absalom; dalla pianta dei piedi alla cima del capo non vi era in lui difetto alcuno.

And like Absalom there was no man fair in all Israel, to praise greatly; from the sole of his foot even unto his crown there was no blemish in him;

26 Q uando si faceva tagliare i capelli (e se li faceva tagliare ogni anno perché la capigliatura gli pesava troppo), egli pesava i capelli del suo capo; essi pesavano duecento sicli a peso del re.

and in his polling his head -- and it hath been at the end of year by year that he polleth, for it heavy on him, and he hath polled it -- he hath even weighed out the hair of his head -- two hundred shekels by the king's weight.

27 A d Absalom nacquero tre figli e una figlia di nome Tamar, che era donna di bell'aspetto.

And there are born to Absalom three sons, and one daughter, and her name Tamar; she was a woman of a fair appearance.

28 A bsalom abitò a Gerusalemme due anni, senza vedere la faccia del re.

And Absalom dwelleth in Jerusalem two years of days, and the face of the king he hath not seen;

29 P oi Absalom fece chiamare Joab per mandarlo dal re, ma egli non volle venire da lui; lo mandò a chiamare una seconda volta, ma non volle venire.

and Absalom sendeth unto Joab, to send him unto the king, and he hath not been willing to come unto him; and he sendeth again a second time, and he hath not been willing to come.

30 A llora Absalom disse ai suoi servi: «Ecco, il campo di Joab è vicino al mio e vi è l'orzo; andate ad appiccarvi il fuoco!». Cosí i servi di Absalom appiccarono il fuoco al campo.

And he saith unto his servants, `See, the portion of Joab by the side of mine, and he hath barley there; go, and burn it with fire;' and the servants of Absalom burn the portion with fire.

31 A llora Joab si levò, andò a casa di Absalom e gli disse: «Perché i tuoi servi hanno dato fuoco al mio campo?».

And Joab riseth and cometh unto Absalom in the house, and saith unto him, `Why have thy servants burned the portion that I have with fire?'

32 A bsalom rispose a Joab: «Io ti avevo mandato a dire: "Vieni qui, affinché possa mandarti dal re a dirgli: Perché sono tornato da Gheshur? Sarebbe meglio per me se fossi rimasto là". Ora quindi permettimi di vedere la faccia del re. Se poi in me vi è qualche iniquità, che mi faccia morire!».

And Absalom saith unto Joab, `Lo, I sent unto thee, saying, Come hither, and I send thee unto the king to say, Why have I come in from Geshur? -- good for me while I there -- and now, let me see the king's face, and if there is in me iniquity then thou hast put me to death.'

33 J oab allora andò dal re e gli riferí la cosa. Questi fece chiamare Absalom che venne dal re e si prostrò con la faccia a terra davanti a lui; e il re baciò Absalom.

And Joab cometh unto the king, and declareth to him, and he calleth unto Absalom, and he cometh unto the king, and boweth himself to him, on his face, to the earth, before the king, and the king giveth a kiss to Absalom.
