1 B en-Hadad re di Siria, radunò tutto il suo esercito; con lui c'erano trentadue re con cavalli e carri; poi salí, cinse d'assedio Samaria e l'attaccò.

And Ben-Hadad king of Aram hath gathered all his force, and thirty and two kings with him, and horse and chariot, and he goeth up and layeth siege against Samaria, and fighteth with it,

2 I nviò quindi messaggeri in città ad Achab, re d'Israele per dirgli:

and sendeth messengers unto Ahab king of Israel, to the city,

3 « Cosí dice Ben-Hadad: "Il tuo argento ed il tuo oro sono miei anche le tue mogli e i tuoi migliori figli sono miei"».

and saith to him, `Thus said Ben-Hadad, `Thy silver and thy gold are mine, and thy wives and thy sons -- the best -- are mine.'

4 I l re d'Israele rispose: «E' come tu dici, o re mio signore; io e tutto ciò che ho siamo tuoi».

And the king of Israel answereth and saith, `According to thy word, my lord, O king: I thine, and all that I have.'

5 I messaggeri tornarono di nuovo e dissero: «Cosí parla Ben-Hadad: "Io ti ho mandato a dire che mi devi dare il tuo argento e il tuo oro, le tue mogli e i tuoi figli;

And the messengers turn back and say, `Thus spake Ben-Hadad, saying, Surely I sent unto thee, saying, Thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy sons, to me thou dost give;

6 m a domani, a quest'ora manderò da te i miei servi, che frugheranno la tua casa e le case dei tuoi servi; essi metteranno le mani su tutto ciò che hai di piú caro e lo porteranno via"».

for if, at this time to-morrow, I send my servants unto thee then they have searched thy house, and the houses of thy servants, and it hath been, every desirable thing of thine eyes they place in their hand, and have taken away.'

7 A llora il re d'Israele chiamò tutti gli anziani del paese e disse: «Guardate, vi prego, e vedete come quest'uomo cerca la nostra rovina, perché mi ha mandato a chiedere le mie mogli e i miei figli il mio argento e il mio oro, e io non gli ho rifiutato nulla».

And the king of Israel calleth to all the elders of the land, and saith, `Know, I pray you, and see that evil this is seeking, for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my sons, and for my silver, and for my gold, and I withheld not from him.'

8 T utti gli anziani e tutto il popolo gli dissero: «Non dargli ascolto e non acconsentire».

And all the elders and all the people say unto him, `Do not hearken, nor consent.'

9 A chab rispose quindi ai messaggeri di Ben-Hadad: «Dite al re, mio signore: "Tutto ciò che hai richiesto al tuo servo la prima volta lo farò, ma questo non lo posso fare"». Cosí i messaggeri andarono a riferire la risposta a Ben-Hadad.

And he saith to the messengers of Ben-Hadad, `Say to my lord the king, All that thou didst send for unto thy servant at the first I do, and this thing I am not able to do;' and the messengers go and take him back word.

10 A llora Ben-Hadad mandò a dire ad Achab: «Gli dèi mi facciano cosí e anche peggio, se la polvere di Samaria basterà a riempire il pugno di tutta la gente che mi segue!».

And Ben-Hadad sendeth unto him, and saith, `Thus do the gods to me, and thus do they add, if the dust of Samaria suffice for handfuls for all the people who at my feet.'

11 I l re d'Israele rispose: «Ditegli: "Chi indossa l'armatura non si glori come chi la depone"».

And the king of Israel answereth and saith, `Speak ye: let not him who is girding on boast himself as him who is loosing.'

12 Q uando Ben-Hadad ricevette questa risposta, egli si trovava assieme ai re a bere sotto le tende, e disse ai suoi servi: «Preparatevi ad attaccare!». Cosí essi si prepararono ad attaccare la città.

And it cometh to pass at the hearing of this word -- and he is drinking, he and the kings, in the booths -- that he saith unto his servants, `Set yourselves;' and they set themselves against the city.

13 M a ecco un profeta si avvicinò ad Achab, re d'Israele, e disse: «Cosí dice l'Eterno: "Vedi tutta questa grande moltitudine? Ecco, oggi stesso io la darò nelle tue mani e tu saprai che io sono l'Eterno"».

And lo, a certain prophet hath come nigh unto Ahab king of Israel, and saith, `Thus said Jehovah, `Hast thou seen all this great multitude? lo, I am giving it into thy hand to-day, and thou hast known that I Jehovah.'

14 A chab disse: «Per mezzo di chi?». Quegli rispose: «Cosí dice l'Eterno: "Per mezzo dei giovani al servizio dei capi delle province"». Achab riprese: «Chi comincerà la battaglia?». Il profeta rispose: «Tu».

And Ahab saith, `By whom?' and he saith, `Thus said Jehovah, By the young men of the heads of the provinces;' and he saith, `Who doth direct the battle?' and he saith, `Thou.'

15 A llora Achab passò in rassegna i giovani che erano al servizio dei capi delle province, ed erano duecentotrentadue. Dopo di loro passò in rassegna tutto il popolo, tutti i figli d'Israele, ed erano settemila.

And he inspecteth the young men of the heads of the provinces, and they are two hundred, two and thirty, and after them he hath inspecteth the whole of the people, all the sons of Israel, seven thousand,

16 A mezzogiorno fecero una sortita, mentre Ben-Hadad stava a bere e ad ubriacarsi sotto le tende assieme ai trentadue re, venuti in suo aiuto.

and they go out at noon, and Ben-Hadad is drinking -- drunk in the booths, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings, helping him.

17 I giovani al servizio dei capi delle province uscirono per primi. Ben-Hadad mandò a vedere, e gli fu riferito, dicendo: «Da Samaria sono usciti alcuni uomini».

And the young men of the heads of the provinces go out at the first, and Ben-Hadad sendeth, and they declare to him, saying, `Men have come out of Samaria.'

18 I l re disse: «Se sono usciti con intenzioni pacifiche, catturateli vivi; se sono usciti per combattere, catturateli ugualmente vivi».

And he saith, `If for peace they have come out -- catch them alive; and if for battle they have come out -- alive catch them.'

19 C osí i giovani al servizio dei capi delle province uscirono dalla città assieme all'esercito che li seguiva,

And these have gone out of the city -- the young men of the heads of the provinces -- and the force that after them,

20 e ciascuno di loro uccise il suo uomo. Cosí i Siri si diedero alla fuga e gl'Israeliti li inseguirono, e Ben-Hadad, re di Siria, fuggí a cavallo con alcuni cavalieri.

and smite each his man, and Aram fleeth, and Israel pursueth them, and Ben-Hadad king of Aram escapeth on a horse, and the horsemen;

21 I l re d'Israele uscí anch'egli, mise in rotta cavalli e carri ed inflisse ai Siri una grande sconfitta.

and the king of Israel goeth out, and smiteth the horses, and the charioteers, and hath smitten among the Aramaeans a great smiting.

22 A llora il profeta si avvicinò al re d'Israele e gli disse: «Va

And the prophet cometh nigh unto the king of Israel, and saith to him, `Go, strengthen thyself, and know and see that which thou dost, for at the turn of the year the king of Aram is coming up against thee.'

23 I servi del re di Siria gli dissero: «Il loro DIO è un DIO delle montagne: per questo sono stati piú forti di noi, ma se diamo loro battaglia in pianura, saremo certamente noi i piú forti.

And the servants of the king of Aram said unto him, `Gods of hills their gods, therefore they were stronger than we; and yet, we fight with them in the plain -- are we not stronger than they?

24 P erciò fa' cosí: rimuovi tutti i re dalla loro posizione di comando e metti al posto loro dei capitani.

`And this thing do thou: turn aside the kings each out of his place, and set captains in their stead;

25 M etti insieme un esercito pari a quello che hai perso, con altrettanti cavalli e altrettanti carri; poi daremo loro battaglia in pianura e noi saremo certamente piú forti di loro». Egli accettò il loro consiglio e fece cosí.

and thou, number to thee a force as the force that is fallen from thee, and horse for horse, and chariot for chariot, and we fight with them in the plain; are we not stronger than they?' and he hearkeneth to their voice, and doth so.

26 L 'anno seguente Ben-Hadad passò in rassegna i Siri e salí verso Afek per combattere con Israele.

And it cometh to pass at the turn of the year, that Ben-Hadad inspecteth the Aramaeans, and goeth up to Aphek, to battle with Israel,

27 A nche i figli d'Israele furono chiamati a raccolta e provvisti di viveri mossero quindi contro i Siri e si accamparono di fronte a loro; sembravano due piccoli greggi di capre, mentre i Siri inondavano il paese.

and the sons of Israel have been inspected, and supported, and go to meet them, and the sons of Israel encamp before them, like two flocks of goats, and the Aramaeans have filled the land.

28 A llora un uomo di DIO si avvicinò al re d'Israele e gli disse: «Cosí dice l'Eterno: "Poiché i Siri hanno detto: L'Eterno è DIO delle montagne e non è DIO delle valli, io darò nelle tue mani tutta questa grande moltitudine; e voi conoscerete che io sono l'Eterno"».

And there cometh nigh a man of God, and speaketh unto the king of Israel, and saith, `Thus said Jehovah, Because that the Aramaeans have said, God of hills Jehovah, and He not God of valleys -- I have given the whole of this great multitude into thy hand, and ye have known that I Jehovah.'

29 P er sette giorni stettero accampati gli uni di fronte agli altri, ma al settimo giorno si attaccò battaglia, e i figli d'Israele uccisero in un sol giorno centomila fanti siriani.

And they encamp one over-against another seven days, and it cometh to pass on the seventh day, that the battle draweth near, and the sons of Israel smite Aram -- a hundred thousand footmen in one day.

30 I superstiti fuggirono nella città di Afek, dove le mura caddero su ventisettemila superstiti. Anche Ben-Hadad fuggí e andò nella città a nascondersi in una stanza interna.

And those left flee to Aphek, unto the city, and the wall falleth on twenty and seven chief men who are left, and Ben-Hadad hath fled, and cometh in unto the city, into the innermost part.

31 I suoi servi gli dissero: «Ecco, abbiamo sentito dire che i re della casa d'Israele sono re clementi; mettiamoci quindi dei sacchi attorno ai fianchi e delle corde al collo e usciamo incontro al re d'Israele; forse egli ti lascerà in vita».

And his servants say unto him, `Lo, we pray thee, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel -- that they are kind kings; let us put, we pray thee, sackcloth on our loins, and ropes on our heads, and we go out unto the king of Israel; it may be he doth keep thee alive.'

32 C osì essi si misero dei sacchi intorno ai fianchi e delle corde al collo, andarono dal re d'Israele e dissero: «Il tuo servo Ben-Hadad dice: "Ti prego, lasciami in vita"». Achab rispose: «E' ancora vivo? Egli è mio fratello».

And they gird sackcloth on their loins, and ropes on their heads, and they come in unto the king of Israel, and say, `Thy servant Ben-Hadad hath said, Let me live, I pray thee;' and he saith, `Is he yet alive? he my brother.'

33 Q uegli uomini presero questo come segno di buon auspicio e si affrettarono a chiederne la conferma, dicendo: «Ben-Hadad è dunque tuo fratello!». Egli rispose: «Andate a prenderlo». Cosí Ben-Hadad si recò da Achab, che lo fece salire sul suo carro.

And the men observe diligently, and hasten, and catch it from him, and say, `Thy brother Ben-Hadad;' and he saith, `Go ye in, bring him;' and Ben-Hadad cometh out unto him, and he causeth him to come up on the chariot.

34 A llora Ben-Hadad, gli disse: «Io restituirò le città che mio padre tolse a tuo padre; e tu potrai stabilire mercati in Damasco, come mio padre aveva fatto in Samaria». Achab disse: «A questo patto ti lascerò andare»; cosí Achab fece un patto con lui e lo lasciò andare.

And he saith unto him, `The cities that my father took from thy father, I give back, and streets thou dost make for thee in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria;' -- `and I, with a covenant, send thee away;' and he maketh with him a covenant, and sendeth him away.

35 A llora uno dei figli dei profeti disse al suo compagno per ordine dell'Eterno: «Colpiscimi!». Ma questi si rifiutò di colpirlo.

And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour by the word of Jehovah, `Smite me, I pray thee;' and the man refuseth to smite him,

36 A llora il primo gli disse: «Poiché non hai ubbidito alla voce dell'Eterno, ecco che appena ti sarai allontanato da me, un leone ti ucciderà». Cosí, non appena si fu allontanato da lui, un leone lo incontrò e lo uccise.

and he saith to him, `Because that thou hast not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, lo, thou art going from me, and the lion hath smitten thee;' and he goeth from him, and the lion findeth him, and smiteth him.

37 P oi il profeta trovò un altro uomo e gli disse: «Colpiscimi!». Questi lo percosse e lo ferí.

And he findeth another man, and saith, `Smite me, I pray thee;' and the man smiteth him, smiting and wounding,

38 A llora il profeta andò ad aspettare il re sulla strada, camuffandosi con una benda sugli occhi.

and the prophet goeth and standeth for the king on the way, and disguiseth himself with ashes on his eyes.

39 C ome il re passava, gli gridò e disse: «Il tuo servo era entrato in mezzo alla battaglia, quand'ecco uno si trasse in disparte e mi condusse un uomo, dicendomi: "Custodisci quest'uomo; se mai venisse a mancare, la tua vita pagherà per la sua, oppure pagherai un talento d'argento".

And it cometh to pass -- the king is passing by -- that he hath cried unto the king, and saith, `Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle, and lo, a man hath turned aside and bringeth in unto me a man, and saith, Keep this man; if he be at all missing, then hath thy life been for his life, or a talent of silver thou dost weigh out;

40 M entre il tuo servo era occupato qua e là, quel tale scomparve». Il re d'Israele gli disse: «Ecco la tua sentenza; l'hai pronunciata tu stesso».

and it cometh to pass, thy servant is working hither and thither, and he is not!' and the king of Israel saith unto him, Right thy judgment; thou hast determined.'

41 E gli allora si tolse in fretta la benda dagli occhi e il re d'Israele si rese conto che era uno dei profeti.

And he hasteth and turneth aside the ashes from off his eyes, and the king of Israel discerneth him, that he of the prophets,

42 I l profeta quindi disse al re: «Cosí dice l'Eterno: "Poiché ti sei lasciato sfuggir di mano l'uomo che io avevo votato allo sterminio, la tua vita pagherà per la sua e il tuo popolo per il suo popolo».

and he saith unto him, `Thus said Jehovah, Because thou hast sent away the man I devoted, out of hand, even thy life hath been for his life, and thy people for his people;'

43 C osí il re d'Israele tornò a casa sua triste e adirato e si recò a Samaria.

and the king of Israel goeth unto his house, sulky and wroth, and cometh in to Samaria.
