1 Q uindi Agrippa disse a Paolo: «Ti è concesso di parlare a tua difesa!». Allora Paolo, distesa la mano iniziò a fare la sua difesa:

And Agrippa said unto Paul, `It is permitted to thee to speak for thyself;' then Paul having stretched forth the hand, was making a defence:

2 « O re Agrippa, io mi ritengo felice di potermi oggi discolpare davanti a te di tutte le cose delle quali sono accusato dai Giudei,

`Concerning all things of which I am accused by Jews, king Agrippa, I have thought myself happy, being about to make a defence before thee to-day,

3 s oprattutto perché tu conosci tutte le usanze e le questioni che ci sono tra i Giudei; ti prego perciò di ascoltarmi con pazienza.

especially knowing thee to be acquainted with all things -- both customs and questions -- among Jews; wherefore, I beseech thee, patiently to hear me.

4 O ra quale sia stato il mio modo di vivere fin dalla giovinezza, che ho trascorsa interamente a Gerusalemme in mezzo al mio popolo, tutti i Giudei lo sanno.

`The manner of my life then, indeed, from youth -- which from the beginning was among my nation, in Jerusalem -- know do all the Jews,

5 E ssi mi hanno conosciuto fin d'allora e possono testimoniare, se lo vogliono che son vissuto come fariseo, secondo la piú rigida setta della nostra religione.

knowing me before from the first, (if they may be willing to testify,) that after the most exact sect of our worship, I lived a Pharisee;

6 E d ora mi trovo in giudizio per la speranza della promessa fatta da Dio ai nostri padri,

and now for the hope of the promise made to the fathers by God, I have stood judged,

7 q uella promessa che le nostre dodici tribú, che servono Dio con fervore giorno e notte, sperano di ottenere; per questa speranza, o re Agrippa, io sono accusato dai Giudei.

to which our twelve tribes, intently night and day serving, do hope to come, concerning which hope I am accused, king Agrippa, by the Jews;

8 P erché mai ritenete incredibile che Dio risusciti i morti?

why is it judged incredible with you, if God doth raise the dead?

9 I o stesso ritenni essere mio dovere far molte cose contro il nome di Gesú il Nazareno.

`I, indeed, therefore, thought with myself, that against the name of Jesus of Nazareth it behoved many things to do,

10 E questo è ciò che feci in Gerusalemme, avendone ricevuto l'autorità dai capi dei sacerdoti, rinchiusi nelle prigioni molti santi e, quando erano messi a morte, io davo il mio assenso.

which also I did in Jerusalem, and many of the saints I in prison did shut up, from the chief priests having received the authority; they also being put to death, I gave my vote against them,

11 E spesse volte, andando da una sinagoga all'altra, li costrinsi a bestemmiare e, grandemente infuriato contro di loro, li perseguitai fin nelle città straniere.

and in every synagogue, often punishing them, I was constraining to speak evil, being also exceedingly mad against them, I was also persecuting even unto strange cities.

12 M entre ero impegnato in questo e stavo andando a Damasco con l'autorizzazione e i pieni poteri dei capi dei sacerdoti,

`In which things, also, going on to Damascus -- with authority and commission from the chief priests --

13 a mezzogiorno, o re, sulla strada io vidi una luce dal cielo piú splendente del sole, sfolgorare intorno a me e a quelli che viaggiavano con me.

at mid-day, I saw in the way, O king, out of heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me a light -- and those going on with me;

14 E ssendo noi tutti caduti a terra, udii una voce che mi parlava e mi disse in lingua ebraica: "Saulo, Saulo, perché mi perseguiti? Ti è duro recalcitrare contro i pungoli".

and we all having fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew dialect, Saul, Saul, why me dost thou persecute? hard for thee against pricks to kick!

15 I o dissi: "Chi sei tu, Signore?". Egli disse: "Io sono Gesú, che tu perseguiti.

`And I said, Who art thou, Lord? and he said, I am Jesus whom thou dost persecute;

16 M a alzati e stà in piedi, perché per questo ti sono apparso: per costituirti ministro e testimone delle cose che tu hai visto e di quelle per le quali io ti apparirò,

but rise, and stand upon thy feet, for for this I appeared to thee, to appoint thee an officer and a witness both of the things thou didst see, and of the things I will appear to thee,

17 l iberandoti dal popolo e dai gentili, ai quali ora ti mando,

delivering thee from the people, and the nations, to whom now I send thee,

18 p er aprir loro gli occhi e convertirli dalle tenebre alla luce e dalla potestà di Satana a Dio, affinché ricevano mediante la fede in me il perdono dei peccati e un'eredità tra i santificati

to open their eyes, to turn from darkness to light, and the authority of the Adversary unto God, for their receiving forgiveness of sins, and a lot among those having been sanctified, by faith that toward me.

19 P erciò, o re Agrippa, io non sono stato disubbidiente alla celeste visione.

`Whereupon, king Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision,

20 M a prima a quelli in Damasco, poi a Gerusalemme. in tutta la regione della Giudea e ai gentili, ho annunziato di ravvedersi e di convertirsi a Dio, facendo opere degne di ravvedimento.

but to those in Damascus first, and to those in Jerusalem, to all the region also of Judea, and to the nations, I was preaching to reform, and to turn back unto God, doing works worthy of reformation;

21 P er queste cose i Giudei, dopo avermi preso nel tempio tentarono di uccidermi.

because of these things the Jews -- having caught me in the temple -- were endeavouring to kill.

22 M a, per l'aiuto ottenuto da Dio fino a questo giorno ho continuato a testimoniare a piccoli e grandi, non dicendo nient'altro se non ciò che i profeti e Mosé dissero che doveva avvenire,

`Having obtained, therefore, help from God, till this day, I have stood witnessing both to small and to great, saying nothing besides the things that both the prophets and Moses spake of as about to come,

23 c ioè: che il Cristo avrebbe sofferto e che, essendo il primo a risuscitare dai morti, avrebbe annunziato la luce al popolo e ai gentili».

that the Christ is to suffer, whether first by a rising from the dead, he is about to proclaim light to the people and to the nations.'

24 O ra, mentre Paolo diceva queste cose a sua difesa, Festo disse ad alta voce: «Paolo, tu farnetichi; le molte lettere ti fanno uscire di senno».

And, he thus making a defence, Festus with a loud voice said, `Thou art mad, Paul; much learning doth turn thee mad;'

25 M a egli disse: «Io non farnetico, eccellentissimo Festo, ma proferisco parole di verità e di buon senno.

and he saith, `I am not mad, most noble Festus, but of truth and soberness the sayings I speak forth;

26 I nfatti il re, al quale parlo con franchezza, è ben informato su queste cose, poiché sono convinto che nessuna di queste cose gli sia sconosciuta, perché tutto questo non è stato fatto in segreto.

for the king doth know concerning these things, before whom also I speak boldly, for none of these things, I am persuaded, are hidden from him; for this thing hath not been done in a corner;

27 O re Agrippa, credi ai profeti? Io so che ci credi».

thou dost believe, king Agrippa, the prophets? I have known that thou dost believe!'

28 A llora Agrippa disse a Paolo: «Ancora un po' e mi persuadi a diventare cristiano».

And Agrippa said unto Paul, `In a little thou dost persuade me to become a Christian!'

29 P aolo disse: «Volesse Dio che in poco o molto tempo non solo tu, ma anche tutti quelli che oggi mi ascoltano, diventaste tali, quale sono io, all'infuori di queste catene».

and Paul said, `I would have wished to God, both in a little, and in much, not only thee, but also all those hearing me to-day, to become such as I also am -- except these bonds.'

30 D ette queste cose, il re si alzò e con lui il governatore, Berenice e quelli che sedevano con loro.

And, he having spoken these things, the king rose up, and the governor, Bernice also, and those sitting with them,

31 R itiratisi in disparte, parlavano tra di loro e dicevano: «Quest'uomo non ha fatto nulla che meriti la morte o la prigione».

and having withdrawn, they were speaking unto one another, saying -- `This man doth nothing worthy of death or of bonds;'

32 A llora Agrippa disse a Festo: «Quest'uomo poteva essere liberato, se non si fosse appellato a Cesare»

and Agrippa said to Festus, `This man might have been released if he had not appealed to Caesar.'
