1 D opo la morte di Saul Davide tornò dalla strage degli Amalekiti e si fermò due giorni a Tsiklag.

And it cometh to pass, after the death of Saul, that David hath returned from smiting the Amalekite, and David dwelleth in Ziklag two days,

2 A l terzo giorno, ecco arrivare dall'accampamento di Saul un uomo con le vesti stracciate e col capo cosparso di terra. Appena giunto vicino a Davide cadde a terra e si prostrò.

and it cometh to pass, on the third day, that lo, a man hath come in out of the camp from Saul, and his garments rent, and earth on his head; and it cometh to pass, in his coming in unto David, that he falleth to the earth, and doth obeisance.

3 D avide gli chiese: «Da dove vieni?». L'altro gli rispose: «Sono fuggito dall'accampamento d'Israele».

And David saith to him, `Whence comest thou?' and he saith unto him, `Out of the camp of Israel I have escaped.'

4 D avide gli disse: «Come sono andate le cose? Ti prego, raccontami». Egli rispose: «Il popolo è fuggito dal campo di battaglia e molti uomini sono caduti e sono morti; anche Saul e suo figlio Gionathan sono morti».

And David saith unto him, `What hath been the matter? declare, I pray thee, to me.' And he saith, that `The people hath fled from the battle, and also a multitude hath fallen of the people, and they die; and also Saul and Jonathan his son have died.'

5 A llora Davide domandò al giovane che gli riferiva dell'accaduto: «Come sai che Saul e suo figlio Gionathan sono morti?».

And David saith unto the youth who is declaring to him, `How hast thou known that Saul and Jonathan his son dead?'

6 l l giovane che gli riferiva dell'accaduto disse: «Mi trovavo per caso sul monte Ghilboa, quando vidi Saul appoggiato alla sua lancia, mentre i carri e i cavalieri lo inseguivano da vicino.

And the youth who is declaring to him saith, I happened to meet in mount Gilboa, and lo, Saul is leaning on his spear; and lo, the chariots and those possessing horses have followed him;

7 E gli si voltò indietro, mi vide e mi chiamò. Io risposi: «Eccomi».

and he turneth behind him, and seeth me, and calleth unto me, and I say, Here I.

8 E gli mi chiese: «Chi sei tu?». Gli risposi: «Sono un Amalekita».

And he saith to me, Who thou? and I say unto him, An Amalekite I.'

9 A llora egli mi disse: «Avvicinati a me e uccidimi, perché una grande angoscia si è impadronita di me, ma la vita è ancora tutta in me».

`And he saith unto me, Stand, I pray thee, over me, and put me to death, for seized me hath the arrow, for all my soul still in me.

10 C osí mi avvicinai a lui e lo uccisi perché capivo che non avrebbe potuto vivere dopo la sua caduta. Poi presi il diadema che era sul suo capo e il bracciale che aveva al braccio, e li ho portati qui al mio signore».

And I stand over him, and put him to death, for I knew that he doth not live after his falling, and I take the crown which on his head, and the bracelet which on his arm, and bring them in unto my lord hither.'

11 A llora Davide afferrò le proprie vesti e le stracciò, e lo stesso fecero tutti gli uomini che erano con lui.

And David taketh hold on his garments, and rendeth them, and also all the men who with him,

12 C osí fecero cordoglio, piansero e digiunarono fino a sera, per Saul, per Gionathan suo figlio, per il popolo dell'Eterno e per la casa d'Israele, perché erano caduti per la spada.

and they mourn, and weep, and fast till the evening, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of Jehovah, and for the house of Israel, because they have fallen by the sword.

13 P oi Davide chiese al giovane che gli aveva riferito dell'accaduto: «Di dove sei?». Egli rispose: «Sono figlio di uno straniero, di un Amalekita».

And David saith unto the youth who is declaring to him, `Whence thou?' and he saith, `Son of a sojourner, an Amalekite, I.'

14 A llora Davide gli disse: «Come mai non hai avuto timore di stendere la mano per uccidere l'unto dell'Eterno?».

And David saith unto him, `How wast thou not afraid to put forth thy hand to destroy the anointed of Jehovah?'

15 P oi chiamò uno dei suoi uomini e gli disse: «Avvicinati e gettati su di lui!». Egli lo colpí e quel tale morí.

And David calleth to one of the youths, and saith, `Draw nigh -- fall upon him;' and he smiteth him, and he dieth;

16 D avide quindi gli disse: «Il tuo sangue ricada sul tuo capo perché la tua stessa bocca ha testimoniato contro di te, dicendo: "Io ho ucciso l'unto dell'Eterno"».

and David saith unto him, `Thy blood on thine own head, for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I -- I put to death the anointed of Jehovah.'

17 A llora Davide intonò questo lamento su Saul e su Gionathan, suo figlio,

And David lamenteth with this lamentation over Saul, and over Jonathan his son;

18 e ordinò di insegnarlo ai figli di Giuda: il canto dell'arco. Ecco si trova scritto nel libro del Giusto.

and he saith to teach the sons of Judah `The Bow;' lo, it is written on the book of the Upright: --

19 « Lo splendore d'Israele giace ucciso sulle tue alture! Come mai sono caduti i prodi?

`The Roebuck, O Israel, On thy high places wounded; How have the mighty fallen!

20 N on annunziatelo a Gath, non fatelo sapere per le vie di Ashkalon. perché non gioiscano le figlie dei Filistei, perché non esultino le figlie degli incirconcisi.

Declare not in Gath, Proclaim not the tidings in the streets of Ashkelon, Lest they rejoice -- The daughters of the Philistines, Lest they exult -- The daughters of the Uncircumcised!

21 O monti di Ghilboa, non vi sia più né rugiada né pioggia su di voi, né campi di offerte; perché là fu gettato via lo scudo dei prodi, lo scudo di Saul, non piú unto con olio.

Mountains of Gilboa! No dew nor rain be on you, And fields of heave-offerings! For there hath become loathsome The shield of the mighty, The shield of Saul -- without the anointed with oil.

22 D al sangue degli uccisi, dal grasso dei prodi, l'arco di Gionathan non si ritrasse mai e la spada di Saul non tornò mai a vuoto.

From the blood of the wounded, From the fat of the mighty, The bow of Jonathan Hath not turned backward; And the sword of Saul doth not return empty.

23 S aul e Gionathan, tanto amati e cordiali in vita, non furono divisi nella loro morte. Erano piú veloci delle aquile, piú forti dei leoni.

Saul and Jonathan! They are loved and pleasant in their lives, And in their death they have not been parted. Than eagles they have been lighter, Than lions they have been mightier!

24 F iglie d'Israele, piangete su Saul, che vi rivestiva di scarlatto nel lusso, ché ornava d'oro le vostre vesti.

Daughters of Israel! for Saul weep ye, Who is clothing you scarlet with delights. Who is lifting up ornaments of gold on your clothing.

25 C ome mai sono caduti i prodi in mezzo alla battaglia, e fu Gionathan ucciso sulle tue alture?

How have the mighty fallen In the midst of the battle! Jonathan! on thy high places wounded!

26 I o sono in angoscia per te, fratello mio Gionathan; tu mi eri molto caro, il tuo amore per me era meraviglioso piú dell'amore delle donne.

I am in distress for thee, my brother Jonathan, Very pleasant wast thou to me; Wonderful was thy love to me, Above the love of women!

27 C ome mai sono caduti i prodi, e sono perite le armi di guerra?».

How have the mighty fallen, Yea, the weapons of war perish!'
