1 I sole, state in silenzio! Riprendano nuove forze i popoli, si avvicinino e poi parlino. Raduniamoci insieme a giudizio!

Keep silent towards Me, O isles, And the peoples pass on power, They come nigh, then they speak, `Together -- to judgment we draw near.'

2 « Chi ha suscitato uno dall'est, chiamandolo ai suoi piedi nella giustizia? Chi gli ha consegnato le nazioni e sottomesso i re? Egli li dà come polvere alla sua spada e come stoppia dispersa al suo arco.

Who stirred up from the east a righteous one? He calleth him to His foot, He giveth before him nations, And kings He causeth him to rule, He giveth as dust his sword, As driven stubble his bow.

3 E gli insegue e procede sicuro per una strada sulla quale i suoi piedi non sono mai passati.

He pursueth them, he passeth over in safety A path with his feet he entereth not.

4 C hi ha operato e compiuto questo, chiamando le generazioni fin dal principio? Io, l'Eterno, sono il primo e con gli ultimi sarò sempre lo stesso».

Who hath wrought and done, Calling the generations from the first? I, Jehovah, the first, and with the last I He.

5 L e isole lo vedono e sono prese da paura, le estremità della terra tremano; si avvicinano, arrivano.

Seen have isles and fear, ends of the earth tremble, They have drawn near, yea, they come.

6 O gnuno aiuta il suo compagno e dice al proprio fratello: «Coraggio!».

Each his neighbour they help, And to his brother he saith, `Be strong.'

7 I l fabbro incoraggia l'orafo e chi rifinisce col martello incoraggia chi batte l'incudine e dice della saldatura: «Va bene» e la rinforza con chiodi, perché non si smuova.

And strengthen doth an artizan the refiner, A smoother a hammer, Him who is beating an anvil, Saying, `For joining it good,' And he strengtheneth it with nails, it is not moved!

8 « Ma tu, Israele, mio servo, Giacobbe che io ho scelto, progenie di Abrahamo, mio amico

-- And thou, O Israel, My servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, Seed of Abraham, My lover,

9 t e che ho preso dalle estremità della terra, che ho chiamato dagli angoli piú remoti di essa e ti ho detto: "Tu sei il mio servo, ti ho scelto e non ti ho rigettato

Whom I have taken hold of, from the ends of the earth, And from its near places I have called thee, And I say to thee, My servant Thou, I have chosen thee, and not rejected thee.

10 N on temere, perché io sono con te non smarrirti, perché io sono il tuo DIO. Io ti fortifico e anche ti aiuto e ti sostengo con la destra della mia giustizia.

Be not afraid, for with thee I, Look not around, for I thy God, I have strengthened thee, Yea, I have helped thee, yea, I upheld thee, With the right hand of My righteousness.

11 E cco, tutti quelli che si sono infuriati contro di te saranno svergognati e confusi; quelli che combattono contro di te saranno ridotti a nulla e periranno.

Lo, all those displeased with thee, They are ashamed and blush, They are as nothing, yea, perish Do the men who strive with thee.

12 T u li cercherai ma non troverai piú quelli che contendevano con te; quelli che ti facevano guerra saranno come nulla, come cosa che non esiste piú.

Thou seekest them, and findest them not, The men who debate with thee, They are as nothing, yea, as nothing, The men who war with thee.

13 P oiché io, l'Eterno, il tuo DIO, ti prendo per la mano destra e ti dico: "Non temere, io ti aiuto"

For I, Jehovah thy God, Am strengthening thy right hand, He who is saying to thee, `Fear not, I have helped thee.'

14 N on temere, o verme di Giacobbe, o uomini d'Israele! Io ti aiuto dice l'Eterno; Il tuo Redentore è il Santo d'Israele.

Fear not, O worm Jacob, ye men of Israel, I helped thee, an affirmation of Jehovah, Even thy redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.

15 E cco, io ti faccio una trebbia nuova con denti acuminati; tu trebbierai i monti e li ridurrai in polvere, e renderai le colline come la pula.

Lo, I have set thee for a new sharp threshing instrument, Possessing teeth, thou threshest mountains, And beatest small, and hills as chaff thou makest.

16 T u li ventilerai, il vento li porterà via e il turbine li disperderà; ma tu giubilerai nell'Eterno e ti glorierai nel Santo d'Israele.

Thou winnowest them, and a wind lifteth them up, And a whirlwind scattereth them, And thou -- thou rejoicest in Jehovah, In the Holy One of Israel dost boast thyself.

17 I miseri e poveri cercano acqua, ma non ce n'è; la loro lingua è riarsa per la sete; io, l'Eterno, li esaudirò; io, il DIO d'Israele, non li abbandonerò.

The poor and the needy are seeking water, And there is none, Their tongue with thirst hath failed, I, Jehovah do answer them, The God of Israel -- I forsake them not.

18 F arò scaturire fiumi sulle colline brulle, e fonti in mezzo alle valli; farò del deserto un lago d'acqua e della terra arida sorgenti d'acqua.

I open on high places rivers, And in midst of valleys fountains, I make a wilderness become a pond of water, And a dry land become springs of water.

19 P ianterò nel deserto il cedro, l'acacia, il mirto e l'ulivo; metterò nell'Arabah, il cipresso, l'olmo e l'abete,

I give in a wilderness the cedar, Shittah, and myrtle, and oil-tree, I set in a desert the fir-pine and box-wood together.

20 a ffinché vedano, sappiano, considerino e comprendano tutti assieme che la mano dell'Eterno ha operato questo e il Santo d'Israele l'ha creato.

So that they see, and know, And regard, and act wisely together, For the hand of Jehovah hath done this, And the Holy One of Israel hath prepared it.

21 P resentate la vostra causa, dice l'Eterno, esponete le vostre ragioni, dice il Re di Giacobbe.

Bring near your cause, saith Jehovah, Bring nigh your mighty ones, saith the king of Jacob.

22 L e espongano e ci annuncino ciò che accadrà. Dichiarino quali erano le cose passate, perché le possiamo considerare e conoscerne il compimento; oppure annunciateci ciò che avverrà.

They bring nigh, and declare to us that which doth happen, The first things -- what they declare ye, And we set our heart, and know their latter end, Or the coming things cause us to hear.

23 A nnunciate ciò che avverrà nel futuro, e cosí sapremo che siete dèi; sí, fate del bene o del male affinché rimaniamo sbigottiti nel vederlo insieme.

Declare the things that are coming hereafter, And we know that ye gods, Yea, ye may do good or do evil, And we look around and see together.

24 E cco, voi siete un nulla e la vostra opera è niente; chi vi sceglie è un abominio.

Lo, ye of nothing, and your work of nought, An abomination -- it fixeth on you.

25 I o ho suscitato uno dal nord, ed egli verrà, dall'est egli invocherà il mio nome; calpesterà i principi come creta, come il vasaio calca l'argilla.

I have stirred up from the north, And he cometh, From the rising of the sun he calleth in My name, And he cometh in prefects as clay, And as a potter treadeth down mire.

26 C hi ha annunciato questo fin dal principio perché lo sapessimo, molto prima perché potessimo dire: "E' giusto"? Ma non c'è nessuno che abbia annunciato questo, nessuno che l'abbia proclamato, nessuno che abbia udito le vostre parole.

Who hath declared from the first, and we know? And beforetime, and we say, `Righteous?' yea, there is none declaring, Yea, there is none proclaiming, Yea, there is none hearing your sayings.

27 P er primo io l'ho annunciato a Sion: Guardate, eccoli! e a Gerusalemme ho inviato un messaggero di buone novelle.

First to Zion, Behold, behold them, And to Jerusalem one proclaiming tidings I give,

28 G uardai, ma non c'era nessuno, proprio nessuno tra loro che sapesse dare un consiglio, o che, interrogato, potesse darmi una risposta.

And I see that there is no man, Yea, of these that there is no counsellor, And I ask them, and they return word:

29 E cco, tutti costoro sono vanità; le loro opere sono un nulla e le loro statue sono vento e cose di nessun valore».

`Lo, all of them vanity, Nought their works, Wind and emptiness their molten images!'
