1 O r prima della festa di Pasqua sapendo Gesú che era venuta la sua ora di passare da questo mondo al Padre, avendo amato i suoi che erano nel mondo, li amò fino alla fine.

And before the feast of the passover, Jesus knowing that his hour hath come, that he may remove out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own who in the world -- to the end he loved them.

2 E , finita la cena, avendo già il diavolo (messo in cuore a Giuda Iscariota, figlio di Simone, di tradirlo,

And supper being come, the devil already having put into the heart of Judas of Simon, Iscariot, that he may deliver him up,

3 G esú, sapendo che il Padre gli aveva dato tutto nelle mani e che egli era proceduto da Dio e a Dio ritornava,

Jesus knowing that all things the Father hath given to him -- into hands, and that from God he came forth, and unto God he goeth,

4 S i alzò dalla cena e depose le sue vesti: poi, preso un asciugatoio, se lo cinse.

doth rise from the supper, and doth lay down his garments, and having taken a towel, he girded himself;

5 D opo aver messo dell'acqua in una bacinella, cominciò a lavare i piedi dei discepoli e ad asciugarli con l'asciugatoio di cui era cinto.

afterward he putteth water into the basin, and began to wash the feet of his disciples, and to wipe with the towel with which he was being girded.

6 V enne dunque a Simon Pietro. Ed egli gli disse: «Signore tu lavi i piedi a me?».

He cometh, therefore, unto Simon Peter, and that one saith to him, `Sir, thou -- dost thou wash my feet?'

7 G esú rispose e gli disse: «Quello che io faccio, ora non lo comprendi, ma lo comprenderai dopo».

Jesus answered and said to him, `That which I do thou hast not known now, but thou shalt know after these things;'

8 P ietro gli disse: «Tu non mi laverai mai i piedi». Gesú gli rispose: «Se non ti lavo, non avrai nessuna parte con me».

Peter saith to him, `Thou mayest not wash my feet -- to the age.' Jesus answered him, `If I may not wash thee, thou hast no part with me;'

9 S imon Pietro gli disse: «Signore, non solo i piedi, ma anche le mani e il capo».

Simon Peter saith to him, `Sir, not my feet only, but also the hands and the head.'

10 G esú gli disse: «Chi ha fatto il bagno, non ha bisogno che di lavarsi i piedi ed è tutto mondo; anche voi siete mondi, ma non tutti».

Jesus saith to him, `He who hath been bathed hath no need save to wash his feet, but he is clean altogether; and ye are clean, but not all;'

11 E gli infatti sapeva chi lo avrebbe tradito; perciò disse: «Non tutti siete mondi».

for he knew him who is delivering him up; because of this he said, `Ye are not all clean.'

12 C osí, dopo aver lavato i piedi riprese le sue vesti, si mise di nuovo a tavola e disse loro: «Comprendete quello che vi ho fatto?

When, therefore, he washed their feet, and took his garments, having reclined (at meat) again, he said to them, `Do ye know what I have done to you?

13 V oi mi chiamate Maestro e Signore e dite bene, perché lo sono.

ye call me, The Teacher and The Lord, and ye say well, for I am;

14 S e dunque io, il Signore e il Maestro, vi ho lavato i piedi, anche voi dovete lavare i piedi gli uni agli altri.

if then I did wash your feet -- the Lord and the Teacher -- ye also ought to wash one another's feet.

15 I o infatti vi ho dato l'esempio, affinché come ho fatto io facciate anche voi.

`For an example I gave to you, that, according as I did to you, ye also may do;

16 I n verità, in verità vi dico: Il servo non è piú grande del suo padrone, né il messaggero piú grande di colui che l'ha mandato.

verily, verily, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his lord, nor an apostle greater than he who sent him;

17 S e sapete queste cose, siete beati se le fate.

if these things ye have known, happy are ye, if ye may do them;

18 N on parlo di voi tutti; io conosco quelli che ho scelto, ma bisogna che si adempia questa Scrittura: "Colui che mangia il pane con me, mi ha levato contro il suo calcagno".

not concerning you all do I speak; I have known whom I chose for myself; but that the Writing may be fulfilled: He who is eating the bread with me, did lift up against me his heel.

19 V e lo dico fin d'ora prima che avvenga, affinché quando sarà avvenuto, crediate che io sono il Cristo.

`From this time I tell you, before its coming to pass, that, when it may come to pass, ye may believe that I am;

20 I n verità, in verità vi dico: Chi riceve colui che manderò, riceve me, e chi riceve me, riceve colui che mi ha mandato»

verily, verily, I say to you, he who is receiving whomsoever I may send, doth receive me; and he who is receiving me, doth receive Him who sent me.'

21 D ette queste cose, Gesú fu turbato nello spirito, e testimoniò e disse: «In verità, in verità vi dico che uno di voi mi tradirà».

These things having said, Jesus was troubled in the spirit, and did testify, and said, `Verily, verily, I say to you, that one of you will deliver me up;'

22 I discepoli allora si guardarono l'un l'altro, non riuscendo a capire di chi parlasse.

the disciples were looking, therefore, one at another, doubting concerning whom he speaketh.

23 O r uno dei discepoli, quello che Gesú amava, era appoggiato sul petto di Gesú.

And there was one of his disciples reclining (at meat) in the bosom of Jesus, whom Jesus was loving;

24 A llora Simon Pietro gli fece cenno di domandare chi fosse colui del quale egli parlava.

Simon Peter, then, doth beckon to this one, to inquire who he may be concerning whom he speaketh,

25 E quel discepolo, chinatosi sul petto di Gesú, gli chiese: «Signore, chi è?».

and that one having leant back on the breast of Jesus, respondeth to him, `Sir, who is it?'

26 G esú rispose: «è colui al quale io darò il boccone, dopo averlo intinto». E intinto il boccone, lo diede a Giuda Iscariota, figlio di Simone.

Jesus answereth, `That one it is to whom I, having dipped the morsel, shall give it;' and having dipped the morsel, he giveth to Judas of Simon, Iscariot.

27 O r dopo quel boccone, Satana entrò in lui. Allora Gesú gli disse: «Quel che fai, fallo presto!».

And after the morsel, then the Adversary entered into that one, Jesus, therefore, saith to him, `What thou dost -- do quickly;'

28 M a nessuno di quelli che erano a tavola comprese perché gli avesse detto ciò.

and none of those reclining at meat knew for what intent he said this to him,

29 A lcuni infatti pensavano, poiché Giuda teneva la borsa, che Gesú gli avesse detto: «Compra le cose che ci occorrono per la festa», oppure che desse qualcosa ai poveri.

for certain were thinking, since Judas had the bag, that Jesus saith to him, `Buy what we have need of for the feast;' or that he may give something to the poor;

30 E gli dunque, preso il boccone uscí subito. Era notte.

having received, therefore, the morsel, that one immediately went forth, and it was night.

31 Q uando fu uscito, Gesú disse: «Ora il Figlio dell'uomo è glorificato, e Dio è glorificato in lui.

When, therefore, he went forth, Jesus saith, `Now was the Son of Man glorified, and God was glorified in him;

32 S e Dio è glorificato in lui, Dio lo glorificherà pure in se stesso e lo glorificherà subito.

if God was glorified in him, God also will glorify him in Himself; yea, immediately He will glorify him.

33 F iglioli, per poco tempo sono ancora con voi; voi mi cercherete, ma come ho detto ai Giudei: "Dove io vado voi non potete venire". Cosí adesso lo dico anche a voi.

`Little children, yet a little am I with you; ye will seek me, and, according as I said to the Jews -- Whither I go away, ye are not able to come, to you also I do say now.

34 V i do un nuovo comandamento: che vi amiate gli uni gli altri; come io vi ho amato, anche voi amatevi gli uni gli altri.

`A new commandment I give to you, that ye love one another; according as I did love you, that ye also love one another;

35 D a questo conosceranno tutti che siete miei discepoli, se avete amore gli uni per gli altri».

in this shall all know that ye are my disciples, if ye may have love one to another.'

36 S imon Pietro gli disse: «Signore, dove vai?». Gesú gli rispose: «Là dove io vado, tu non puoi seguirmi ora; ma mi seguirai piú tardi».

Simon Peter saith to him, `Sir, whither dost thou go away?' Jesus answered him, `Whither I go away, thou art not able now to follow me, but afterward thou shalt follow me.'

37 P ietro gli disse: «Signore, perché non posso seguirti ora? Darò la mia vita per te».

Peter saith to him, `Sir, wherefore am I not able to follow thee now? my life for thee I will lay down;'

38 G esú gli rispose: «Darai la tua vita per me? In verità, in verità ti dico: il gallo non canterà, prima che tu non mi abbia rinnegato tre volte».

Jesus answered him, `Thy life for me thou wilt lay down! verily, verily, I say to thee, a cock will not crow till thou mayest deny me thrice.'
