1 y Jesús se fue al monte de los Olivos.

And at dawn he came again to the temple,

2 P or la mañana Jesús volvió al templo, y todo el pueblo se le acercó; y él se sentó y les enseñaba.

and all the people were coming unto him, and having sat down, he was teaching them;

3 E ntonces los escribas y los fariseos le llevaron a una mujer que había sido sorprendida cometiendo adulterio. La pusieron en medio,

and the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman having been taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst,

4 y le dijeron: «Maestro, esta mujer ha sido sorprendida en el acto mismo de adulterio.

they say to him, `Teacher, this woman was taken in the very crime -- committing adultery,

5 E n la ley, Moisés nos ordenó apedrear a mujeres como ésta. ¿Y tú, qué dices?»

and in the law, Moses did command us that such be stoned; thou, therefore, what dost thou say?'

6 E llos decían esto para ponerle una trampa, y así poder acusarlo. Pero Jesús se inclinó y, con el dedo, escribía en el suelo.

and this they said, trying him, that they might have to accuse him. And Jesus, having stooped down, with the finger he was writing on the ground,

7 C omo ellos insistían en sus preguntas, él se enderezó y les dijo: «Aquel de ustedes que esté sin pecado, que le arroje la primera piedra.»

and when they continued asking him, having bent himself back, he said unto them, `The sinless of you -- let him first cast the stone at her;'

8 Y Jesús volvió a inclinarse, y siguió escribiendo en el suelo.

and again having stooped down, he was writing on the ground,

9 E llos, al oír esto, se fueron retirando uno a uno, comenzando por los más viejos y siguiendo por los más jóvenes. Sólo se quedó Jesús, y la mujer permanecía en medio.

and they having heard, and by the conscience being convicted, were going forth one by one, having begun from the elders -- unto the last; and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

10 E ntonces Jesús se enderezó y le dijo: «Y, mujer, ¿dónde están todos? ¿Ya nadie te condena?»

And Jesus having bent himself back, and having seen no one but the woman, said to her, `Woman, where are those -- thine accusers? did no one pass sentence upon thee?'

11 E lla dijo: «Nadie, Señor.» Entonces Jesús le dijo: «Tampoco yo te condeno. Vete, y no peques más.»] Jesús, la luz del mundo

and she said, `No one, Sir;' and Jesus said to her, `Neither do I pass sentence on thee; be going on, and no more sin.'

12 E n otra ocasión, Jesús dijo: «Yo soy la luz del mundo; el que me sigue, no andará en tinieblas, sino que tendrá la luz de la vida.»

Again, therefore, Jesus spake to them, saying, `I am the light of the world; he who is following me shall not walk in the darkness, but he shall have the light of the life.'

13 E ntonces los fariseos le dijeron: «Tú das testimonio acerca de ti mismo; tu testimonio no es verdadero.»

The Pharisees, therefore, said to him, `Thou of thyself dost testify, thy testimony is not true;'

14 J esús les respondió: «Aunque yo doy testimonio acerca de mí mismo, mi testimonio es verdadero, porque sé de dónde he venido y a dónde voy; pero ustedes no saben de dónde vengo ni a dónde voy.

Jesus answered and said to them, `And if I testify of myself -- my testimony is true, because I have known whence I came, and whither I go, and ye -- ye have not known whence I come, or whither I go.

15 U stedes juzgan según criterios humanos; yo no juzgo a nadie.

`Ye according to the flesh do judge; I do not judge any one,

16 Y si acaso juzgo, mi juicio es verdadero; porque no soy sólo yo, sino el Padre, que me envió, y yo.

and even if I do judge my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me;

17 E n la ley de ustedes está escrito que el testimonio de dos hombres es verdadero.

and also in your law it hath been written, that the testimony of two men are true;

18 Y o soy quien da testimonio de mí mismo, y el Padre, que me envió, da testimonio de mí.»

I am who is testifying of myself, and the Father who sent me doth testify of me.'

19 E llos le dijeron: «¿Y dónde está tu Padre?» Jesús respondió: «Ustedes no me conocen a mí, ni tampoco conocen a mi Padre. Si me conocieran a mí, también conocerían a mi Padre.»

They said, therefore, to him, `Where is thy father?' Jesus answered, `Ye have neither known me nor my Father: if me ye had known, my Father also ye had known.'

20 J esús pronunció estas palabras en el lugar de las ofrendas, cuando enseñaba en el templo; y nadie lo aprehendió, porque aún no había llegado su hora. A donde yo voy, ustedes no pueden venir

These sayings spake Jesus in the treasury, teaching in the temple, and no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come;

21 U na vez más, Jesús les dijo: «Yo me voy, y ustedes me buscarán; pero en su pecado morirán. A donde yo voy, ustedes no pueden venir.»

therefore said Jesus again to them, `I go away, and ye will seek me, and in your sin ye shall die; whither I go away, ye are not able to come.'

22 L os judíos decían: «¿Acaso se matará a sí mismo? Pues dice: “A donde yo voy, ustedes no pueden venir.”»

The Jews, therefore, said, `Will he kill himself, because he saith, Whither I go away, ye are not able to come?'

23 É l les dijo: «Ustedes son de aquí abajo; yo soy de allá arriba. Ustedes son de este mundo; yo no soy de este mundo.

and he said to them, `Ye are from beneath, I am from above; ye are of this world, I am not of this world;

24 P or eso les dije que morirán en sus pecados; porque si ustedes no creen que yo soy, en sus pecados morirán.»

I said, therefore, to you, that ye shall die in your sins, for if ye may not believe that I am, ye shall die in your sins.'

25 E llos le dijeron: «¿Y quién eres tú?» Jesús les respondió: «Lo que desde el principio les he dicho.

They said, therefore, to him, `Thou -- who art thou?' and Jesus said to them, `Even what I did speak of to you at the beginning;

26 M ucho es lo que tengo que decir y juzgar de ustedes. Pero el que me envió es verdadero; y yo le digo al mundo lo que de él sé.»

many things I have to speak concerning you and to judge, but He who sent me is true, and I -- what things I heard from Him -- these I say to the world.'

27 P ero ellos no entendieron que les hablaba del Padre.

They knew not that of the Father he spake to them;

28 E ntonces Jesús les dijo: «Cuando ustedes hayan levantado al Hijo del Hombre, sabrán entonces que yo soy, y que nada hago por mí mismo, sino que hablo según lo que el Padre me enseñó.

Jesus, therefore, said to them, `When ye may lift up the Son of Man then ye will know that I am; and of myself I do nothing, but according as my Father did teach me, these things I speak;

29 P orque el que me envió está conmigo, y no me ha dejado solo, porque yo hago siempre lo que a él le agrada.»

and He who sent me is with me; the Father did not leave me alone, because I, the things pleasing to Him, do always.'

30 L uego de que él dijo estas cosas, muchos creyeron en él. La verdad los hará libres

As he is speaking these things, many believed in him;

31 E ntonces Jesús dijo a los judíos que habían creído en él: «Si ustedes permanecen en mi palabra, serán verdaderamente mis discípulos;

Jesus, therefore, said unto the Jews who believed in him, `If ye may remain in my word, truly my disciples ye are, and ye shall know the truth,

32 y conocerán la verdad, y la verdad los hará libres.»

and the truth shall make you free.'

33 L e respondieron: «Nosotros somos descendientes de Abrahán, y jamás hemos sido esclavos de nadie. ¿Cómo puedes decir: “Ustedes serán libres”?»

They answered him, `Seed of Abraham we are; and to no one have we been servants at any time; how dost thou say -- Ye shall become free?'

34 J esús les respondió: «De cierto, de cierto les digo, que todo aquel que comete pecado, esclavo es del pecado.

Jesus answered them, `Verily, verily, I say to you -- Every one who is committing sin, is a servant of the sin,

35 Y el esclavo no se queda en la casa para siempre; el hijo sí se queda para siempre.

and the servant doth not remain in the house -- to the age, the son doth remain -- to the age;

36 A sí que, si el Hijo los liberta, serán verdaderamente libres.

if then the son may make you free, in reality ye shall be free.

37 Y o sé que ustedes son descendientes de Abrahán; pero intentan matarme porque mi palabra no halla cabida en ustedes.

`I have known that ye are seed of Abraham, but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you;

38 Y o hablo de lo que he visto con el Padre, pero ustedes hacen lo que han oído de parte de su padre.»

I -- that which I have seen with my Father do speak, and ye, therefore, that which ye have seen with your father -- ye do.'

39 E llos le respondieron: «Nuestro padre es Abrahán.» Jesús les dijo: «Si fueran hijos de Abrahán, harían las obras de Abrahán.

They answered and said to him, `Our father is Abraham;' Jesus saith to them, `If children of Abraham ye were, the works of Abraham ye were doing;

40 P ero ahora intentan matarme; a mí, que les he dicho la verdad, la cual he escuchado de Dios. Esto no lo hizo Abrahán.

and now, ye seek to kill me -- a man who hath spoken to you the truth I heard from God; this Abraham did not;

41 U stedes hacen las obras de su padre.» Entonces le dijeron: «Nosotros no hemos nacido de un acto de inmoralidad. Tenemos un padre, que es Dios.»

ye do the works of your father.' They said, therefore, to him, `We of whoredom have not been born; one Father we have -- God;'

42 Y Jesús les dijo: «Si su padre fuera Dios, ciertamente me amarían; porque yo he salido y he venido de Dios. No he venido por mi propia cuenta, sino que él me envió.

Jesus then said to them, `If God were your father, ye were loving me, for I came forth from God, and am come; for neither have I come of myself, but He sent me;

43 ¿ Por qué no entienden mi lenguaje? Pues porque no pueden escuchar mi palabra.

wherefore do ye not know my speech? because ye are not able to hear my word.

44 U stedes son de su padre el diablo, y quieren cumplir con los deseos de su padre, quien desde el principio ha sido un homicida. No se mantiene en la verdad, porque no hay verdad en él. Cuando habla mentira, habla de lo que le es propio; porque es mentiroso y padre de la mentira.

`Ye are of a father -- the devil, and the desires of your father ye will to do; he was a man-slayer from the beginning, and in the truth he hath not stood, because there is no truth in him; when one may speak the falsehood, of his own he speaketh, because he is a liar -- also his father.

45 P ero a mí, que digo la verdad, no me creen.

`And because I say the truth, ye do not believe me.

46 ¿ Quién de ustedes puede acusarme de haber pecado? Y si digo la verdad, ¿por qué no me creen?

Who of you doth convict me of sin? and if I speak truth, wherefore do ye not believe me?

47 E l que es de Dios, escucha las palabras de Dios; pero ustedes no las escuchan, porque no son de Dios.» La preexistencia de Cristo

he who is of God, the sayings of God he doth hear; because of this ye do not hear, because of God ye are not.'

48 L os judíos le respondieron: «¿Acaso no tenemos razón al decir que tú eres samaritano, y que tienes un demonio?»

The Jews, therefore, answered and said to him, `Do we not say well, that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?'

49 R espondió Jesús: «Demonio no tengo. Yo lo que hago es honrar a mi Padre, pero ustedes me deshonran.

Jesus answered, `I have not a demon, but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me;

50 Y yo no busco mi gloria. Pero hay uno que la busca, y que juzga.

and I do not seek my own glory; there is who is seeking and is judging;

51 D e cierto, de cierto les digo que, el que obedece mi palabra, nunca verá la muerte.»

verily, verily, I say to you, If any one may keep my word, death he may not see -- to the age.'

52 E ntonces los judíos le dijeron: «Ahora estamos seguros de que tienes un demonio. Abrahán murió, lo mismo que los profetas; ¿y tú dices: “El que guarda mi palabra, nunca verá la muerte”?

The Jews, therefore, said to him, `Now we have known that thou hast a demon; Abraham did die, and the prophets, and thou dost say, If any one may keep my word, he shall not taste of death -- to the age!

53 ¿ Acaso eres tú mayor que nuestro padre Abrahán, el cual murió? ¡Y también los profetas murieron! ¿Quién te crees tú?»

Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died; whom dost thou make thyself?'

54 J esús respondió: «Si yo me glorifico a mí mismo, mi gloria nada es; pero el que me glorifica es mi Padre, el que ustedes dicen que es su Dios.

Jesus answered, `If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who is glorifying me, of whom ye say that He is your God;

55 U stedes no lo conocen, pero yo sí lo conozco. Y si yo dijera que no lo conozco, sería un mentiroso como ustedes. Pero lo conozco, y obedezco su palabra.

and ye have not known Him, and I have known Him, and if I say that I have not known Him, I shall be like you -- speaking falsely; but I have known Him, and His word I keep;

56 A brahán, el padre de ustedes, se alegró al saber que vería mi día. Y lo vio, y se alegró.»

Abraham, your father, was glad that he might see my day; and he saw, and did rejoice.'

57 L os judíos le dijeron: «Ni siquiera tienes cincuenta años, ¿y has visto a Abrahán?»

The Jews, therefore, said unto him, `Thou art not yet fifty years old, and Abraham hast thou seen?'

58 J esús les dijo: «De cierto, de cierto les digo: Antes de que Abrahán fuera, yo soy.»

Jesus said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Before Abraham's coming -- I am;'

59 E ntonces tomaron piedras para arrojárselas; pero Jesús se escondió y salió del templo.

they took up, therefore, stones that they may cast at him, but Jesus hid himself, and went forth out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
