1 D ijo Samuel a todo Israel: —He oído vuestra voz en todo cuanto me habéis dicho, y os he dado un rey.

And Samuel saith unto all Israel, `Lo, I have hearkened to your voice, to all that ye said to me, and I cause to reign over you a king,

2 A hora, pues, ahí tenéis al rey que ha de guiaros. Yo soy ya viejo y estoy lleno de canas; pero mis hijos están con vosotros, y yo he andado delante de vosotros desde mi juventud hasta este día.

and now, lo, the king is walking habitually before you, and I have become aged and gray-headed, and my sons, lo, they with you, and I have walked habitually before you from my youth till this day.

3 A quí estoy; atestiguad contra mí delante de Jehová y delante de su ungido, si he tomado el buey de alguno, si he tomado el asno de alguno, si he calumniado a alguien, si he agraviado a alguno o si de alguien he aceptado soborno para cerrar los ojos; y os lo restituiré.

`Lo, here I; testify against me, over-against Jehovah, and over-against His anointed; whose ox have I taken, and whose ass have I taken, and whom have I oppressed; whom have I bruised, and of whose hand have I taken a ransom, and hide mine eyes with it? -- and I restore to you.'

4 — Nunca nos has calumniado ni agraviado, ni has tomado nada de manos de ningún hombre —dijeron ellos.

And they say, `Thou hast not oppressed us, nor hast thou crushed us, nor hast thou taken from the hand of any one anything.'

5 É l les dijo: —Jehová es testigo contra vosotros, y su ungido también es testigo en este día, que no habéis hallado cosa alguna en mis manos. —Así es —respondieron ellos.

And he saith unto them, `A witness Jehovah against you: and a witness His anointed this day, that ye have not found anything in my hand;' and they say, `A witness.'

6 E ntonces Samuel dijo al pueblo: —Jehová, que designó a Moisés y a Aarón, y sacó a vuestros padres de la tierra de Egipto, es testigo.

And Samuel saith unto the people, `Jehovah -- He who made Moses and Aaron, and who brought up your fathers out of the land of Egypt!

7 A hora, pues, aguardad, y discutiré con vosotros delante de Jehová acerca de todos los hechos de salvación que Jehová ha hecho con vosotros y con vuestros padres.

and, now, station yourselves, and I judge you before Jehovah, with all the righteous acts of Jehovah, which He did with you, and with your fathers.

8 C uando Jacob entró en Egipto y vuestros padres clamaron a Jehová, Jehová envió a Moisés y a Aarón, los cuales sacaron a vuestros padres de Egipto y los hicieron habitar en este lugar.

`When Jacob hath come in to Egypt, and your fathers cry unto Jehovah, then Jehovah sendeth Moses and Aaron, and they bring out your fathers from Egypt, and cause them to dwell in this place,

9 P ero ellos olvidaron a Jehová su Dios y él los entregó en manos de Sísara, jefe del ejército de Hazor, en manos de los filisteos y en manos del rey de Moab, que les hicieron guerra.

and they forget Jehovah their God, and He selleth them into the hand of Sisera, head of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fight against them,

10 E llos clamaron a Jehová, y dijeron: “Hemos pecado, porque hemos dejado a Jehová y hemos servido a los baales y a Astarot; líbranos ahora, pues, de manos de nuestros enemigos, y te serviremos.”

and they cry unto Jehovah, and say, We have sinned, because we have forsaken Jehovah, and serve the Baalim, and Ashtaroth, and now, deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we serve Thee.

11 » Entonces Jehová envió a Jerobaal, a Barac, a Jefté y a Samuel, y os libró de manos de los enemigos que os rodeaban, y habitasteis seguros.

`And Jehovah sendeth Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivereth you out of the hand of your enemies round about, and ye dwell confidently.

12 P ero cuando visteis que Nahas, rey de los hijos de Amón, venía contra vosotros, me dijisteis: “No, que reine sobre nosotros un rey”, siendo así que Jehová, vuestro Dios, era vuestro rey.

`And ye see that Nahash king of the Bene-Ammon hath come against you, and ye say to me, Nay, but a king doth reign over us; and Jehovah your God your king!

13 A hora, pues, aquí tenéis al rey que habéis elegido, el cual pedisteis; ya veis que Jehová os ha dado un rey.

And, now, lo, the king whom ye have chosen -- whom ye have asked! and lo, Jehovah hath placed over you a king.

14 S i teméis a Jehová y lo servís, si escucháis su voz y no sois rebeldes a la palabra de Jehová, si tanto vosotros como el rey que reina sobre vosotros servís a Jehová, vuestro Dios, haréis bien.

`If ye fear Jehovah, and have served Him, and hearkened to His voice, then ye do not provoke the mouth of Jehovah, and ye have been -- both ye and the king who hath reigned over you -- after Jehovah your God.

15 P ero si no escucháis la voz de Jehová, si os rebeláis contra sus mandatos, la mano de Jehová estará contra vosotros como estuvo contra vuestros padres.

`And if ye do not hearken to the voice of Jehovah -- then ye have provoked the mouth of Jehovah, and the hand of Jehovah hath been against you, and against your fathers.

16 » Esperad aún ahora y mirad esta gran cosa que Jehová hará ante vuestros ojos.

`Also now, station yourselves and see this great thing which Jehovah is doing before your eyes;

17 ¿ No es ahora la siega del trigo? Yo clamaré a Jehová, y él dará truenos y lluvias, para que conozcáis y veáis cuán grande es la maldad que habéis cometido ante los ojos de Jehová pidiendo para vosotros un rey.

is it not wheat-harvest to-day? I call unto Jehovah, and He doth give voices and rain; and know ye and see that your evil is great which ye have done in the eyes of Jehovah, to ask for you a king.'

18 L uego clamó Samuel a Jehová, y Jehová dio truenos y lluvias en aquel día; y todo el pueblo sintió un gran temor de Jehová y de Samuel.

And Samuel calleth unto Jehovah, and Jehovah giveth voices and rain, on that day, and all the people greatly fear Jehovah and Samuel;

19 E ntonces dijo todo el pueblo a Samuel: —Ruega por tus siervos a Jehová, tu Dios, para que no muramos; porque a todos nuestros pecados hemos añadido este mal de pedir un rey para nosotros.

and all the people say unto Samuel, `Pray for thy servants unto Jehovah thy God, and we do not die, for we have added to all our sins evil to ask for us a king.'

20 P ero Samuel dijo al pueblo: —No temáis; vosotros habéis hecho todo este mal; pero con todo eso no dejéis de seguir en pos de Jehová, sino servidle con todo vuestro corazón.

And Samuel saith unto the people, `Fear not; ye have done all this evil; only, turn not aside from after Jehovah -- and ye have served Jehovah with all your heart,

21 N o os apartéis en pos de vanidades que no aprovechan ni libran, porque son vanidades.

and ye do not turn aside after the vain things which do not profit nor deliver, for they vain,

22 P ues Jehová no desamparará a su pueblo, por su gran nombre; porque Jehová ha querido haceros pueblo suyo.

for Jehovah doth not leave His people, on account of His great name; for Jehovah hath been pleased to make you to Him for a people.

23 A sí que, lejos de mí pecar contra Jehová dejando de rogar por vosotros; antes os instruiré en el camino bueno y recto.

`I, also, far be it from me to sin against Jehovah, by ceasing to pray for you, and I have directed you in the good and upright way;

24 S olamente temed a Jehová y servidle de verdad con todo vuestro corazón, pues habéis visto cuán grandes cosas ha hecho por vosotros.

only, fear ye Jehovah, and ye have served Him in truth with all your heart, for see that which He hath made great with you;

25 P ero si perseveráis en hacer mal, vosotros y vuestro rey pereceréis.

and if ye really do evil, both ye and your king are consumed.'
