1 J acob siguió su camino, y le salieron al encuentro unos ángeles de Dios.

And Jacob hath gone on his way, and messengers of God come upon him;

2 D ijo Jacob cuando los vio: «Campamento de Dios es éste», y llamó a aquel lugar Mahanaim.

and Jacob saith, when he hath seen them, `This the camp of God;' and he calleth the name of that place `Two Camps.'

3 E nvió Jacob mensajeros por delante al encuentro de su hermano Esaú, a la tierra de Seir, campo de Edom.

And Jacob sendeth messengers before him unto Esau his brother, towards the land of Seir, the field of Edom,

4 Y los mandó diciendo: «Diréis a mi señor Esaú: “Así dice tu siervo Jacob: ‘Con Labán he vivido, y con él he estado hasta ahora;

and commandeth them, saying, `Thus do ye say to my lord, to Esau: Thus said thy servant Jacob, With Laban I have sojourned, and I tarry until now;

5 t engo vacas, asnos, ovejas, siervos y siervas; y envío este mensaje a mi señor, para hallar gracia en tus ojos.’”»

and I have ox, and ass, flock, and man-servant, and maid-servant, and I send to declare to my lord, to find grace in his eyes.'

6 L os mensajeros regresaron a Jacob, y le dijeron: —Fuimos a ver a tu hermano Esaú; él también viene a recibirte, y cuatrocientos hombres vienen con él.

And the messengers turn back unto Jacob, saying, `We came in unto thy brother, unto Esau, and he also is coming to meet thee, and four hundred men with him;'

7 J acob tuvo entonces gran temor y se angustió; distribuyó en dos campamentos el pueblo que tenía consigo, y las ovejas, las vacas y los camellos,

and Jacob feareth exceedingly, and is distressed, and he divideth the people who with him, and the flock, and the herd, and the camels, into two camps,

8 p orque pensó: «Si viene Esaú contra un campamento y lo ataca, el otro campamento escapará.»

and saith, `If Esau come in unto the one camp, and have smitten it -- then the camp which is left hath been for an escape.'

9 L uego dijo Jacob: «Dios de mi padre Abraham y Dios de mi padre Isaac, Jehová, que me dijiste: “Vuélvete a tu tierra y a tu parentela, y yo te haré bien”,

And Jacob saith, `God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Jehovah who saith unto me, Turn back to thy land, and to thy kindred, and I do good with thee:

10 ¡ no merezco todas las misericordias y toda la verdad con que has tratado a tu siervo!; pues con mi cayado pasé este Jordán, y ahora he de atender a dos campamentos.

I have been unworthy of all the kind acts, and of all the truth which Thou hast done with thy servant -- for, with my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.

11 L íbrame ahora de manos de mi hermano, de manos de Esaú, porque le temo; no venga acaso y me hiera a la madre junto con los hijos.

`Deliver me, I pray Thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I am fearing him, less he come and have smitten me -- mother beside sons;

12 Y tú has dicho: “Yo te haré bien, y tu descendencia será como la arena del mar, que por ser tanta no se puede contar.”»

and Thou -- Thou hast said, I certainly do good with thee, and have set thy seed as the sand of the sea, which is not numbered because of the multitude.'

13 D urmió allí aquella noche, y tomó de lo que le vino a la mano un regalo para su hermano Esaú:

And he lodgeth there during that night, and taketh from that which is coming into his hand, a present for Esau his brother:

14 d oscientas cabras y veinte machos cabríos, doscientas ovejas y veinte carneros,

she-goats two hundred, and he-goats twenty, ewes two hundred, and rams twenty,

15 t reinta camellas paridas con sus crías, cuarenta vacas y diez novillos, veinte asnas y diez borricos.

suckling camels and their young ones thirty, cows forty, and bullocks ten, she-asses twenty, and foals ten;

16 L o entregó a sus siervos, cada manada por separado, y dijo a sus siervos: —Pasad delante de mí y poned espacio entre manada y manada.

and he giveth into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and saith unto his servants, `Pass over before me, and a space ye do put between drove and drove.'

17 M andó al primero, diciendo: —Si mi hermano Esaú te encuentra y te pregunta: “¿De quién eres? ¿Y adónde vas? ¿Y para quién es esto que llevas delante de ti?”,

And he commandeth the first, saying, `When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and hath asked thee, saying, Whose thou? and whither goest thou? and whose these before thee?

18 e ntonces dirás: “Es un regalo que tu siervo Jacob envía a mi señor Esaú. También él viene detrás de nosotros.”

then thou hast said, Thy servant Jacob's: it a present sent to my lord, to Esau; and lo, he also behind us.'

19 M andó también al segundo, al tercero y a todos los que iban detrás de aquellas manadas, diciendo: —Esto mismo diréis a Esaú, cuando lo halléis.

And he commandeth also the second, also the third, also all who are going after the droves, saying, `According to this manner do ye speak unto Esau in your finding him,

20 Y diréis también: “Tu siervo Jacob viene detrás de nosotros.” Pues Jacob pensó: «Apaciguaré su ira con el regalo que va delante de mí, y después veré su rostro. Quizá así me acepte.»

and ye have said also, Lo, thy servant Jacob behind us;' for he said, `I pacify his face with the present which is going before me, and afterwards I see his face; it may be he lifteth up my face;'

21 P asó, pues, el regalo delante de él, y él durmió aquella noche en el campamento. Jacob lucha con el ángel en Peniel

and the present passeth over before his face, and he hath lodged during that night in the camp.

22 S e levantó aquella noche, tomó a sus dos mujeres, a sus dos siervas y a sus once hijos, y pasó el vado de Jaboc.

And he riseth in that night, and taketh his two wives, and his two maid-servants, and his eleven children, and passeth over the passage of Jabbok;

23 L os tomó, pues, y les hizo pasar el arroyo a ellos y a todo lo que tenía.

and he taketh them, and causeth them to pass over the brook, and he causeth that which he hath to pass over.

24 A sí se quedó Jacob solo; y luchó con él un varón hasta que rayaba el alba.

And Jacob is left alone, and one wrestleth with him till the ascending of the dawn;

25 C uando el hombre vio que no podía con él, tocó en el sitio del encaje de su muslo, y se descoyuntó el muslo de Jacob mientras con él luchaba.

and he seeth that he is not able for him, and he cometh against the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob's thigh is disjointed in his wrestling with him;

26 Y dijo: —Déjame, porque raya el alba. Jacob le respondió: —No te dejaré, si no me bendices.

and he saith, `Send me away, for the dawn hath ascended:' and he saith, `I send thee not away, except thou hast blessed me.'

27 — ¿Cuál es tu nombre? —le preguntó el hombre. —Jacob —respondió él.

And he saith unto him, `What thy name?' and he saith, `Jacob.'

28 E ntonces el hombre dijo: —Ya no te llamarás Jacob, sino Israel, porque has luchado con Dios y con los hombres, y has vencido.

And he saith, `Thy name is no more called Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast been a prince with God and with men, and dost prevail.'

29 — Declárame ahora tu nombre —le preguntó Jacob. —¿Por qué me preguntas por mi nombre? —respondió el hombre. Y lo bendijo allí mismo.

And Jacob asketh, and saith, `Declare, I pray thee, thy name;' and he saith, `Why this, thou askest for My name?' and He blesseth him there.

30 J acob llamó Peniel a aquel lugar, porque dijo: «Vi a Dios cara a cara, y fue librada mi alma.»

And Jacob calleth the name of the place Peniel: for `I have seen God face unto face, and my life is delivered;'

31 Y a había pasado de Peniel cuando salió el sol; y cojeaba a causa de su cadera.

and the sun riseth on him when he hath passed over Penuel, and he is halting on his thigh;

32 P or esto, hasta el día de hoy no comen los hijos de Israel del tendón que se contrajo, el cual está en el encaje del muslo, porque Jacob fue tocado en este sitio de su muslo, en el tendón que se contrajo.

therefore the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew which shrank, which on the hollow of the thigh, unto this day, because He came against the hollow of Jacob's thigh, against the sinew which shrank.
