1 R espondió Elifaz, el temanita, y dijo:

And Eliphaz the Temanite answereth and saith: --

2 « ¿Podrá el hombre ser de provecho a Dios? Si acaso, sólo para sí mismo es provechoso el hombre sabio.

To God is a man profitable, Because a wise man to himself is profitable?

3 ¿ Le satisface al Omnipotente que tú seas justo? ¿Le aprovecha de algo que tú hagas perfectos tus caminos?

Is it a delight to the Mighty One That thou art righteous? is it gain, That thou makest perfect thy ways?

4 ¿ Acaso por tu piedad te castiga o entra a juicio contigo?

Because of thy reverence Doth He reason thee? He entereth with thee into judgment:

5 P or cierto, tu maldad es grande y tus iniquidades no tienen fin.

Is not thy wickedness abundant? And there is no end to thine iniquities.

6 S in razón tomabas prenda de tus hermanos y despojabas de sus ropas a los desnudos.

For thou takest a pledge of thy brother for nought, And the garments of the naked Thou dost strip off.

7 N o dabas de beber agua al cansado y negaste el pan al hambriento.

Thou causest not the weary to drink water, And from the hungry thou withholdest bread.

8 ¡ Tú, el hombre pudiente que poseía la tierra, el distinguido que habitaba en ella,

As to the man of arm -- he hath the earth, And the accepted of face -- he dwelleth in it.

9 a las viudas enviabas vacías y quebrabas los brazos de los huérfanos!

Widows thou hast sent away empty, And the arms of the fatherless are bruised.

10 P or eso estás rodeado de lazos y te turba un espanto repentino;

Therefore round about thee snares, And trouble thee doth fear suddenly.

11 e stás en tinieblas, de modo que no ves, y te cubre un torrente de agua.

Or darkness -- thou dost not see, And abundance of waters doth cover thee.

12 » ¿No está Dios en lo alto de los cielos? ¡Mira lo encumbrado de las estrellas, cuán elevadas están!

Is not God high heaven? And see the summit of the stars, That they are high.

13 Y tú has dicho: “¿Qué sabe Dios? ¿Cómo juzgará a través de la oscuridad?

And thou hast said, `What -- hath God known? Through thickness doth He judge?

14 R odeado de nubes, no puede ver mientras pasea por los bordes del cielo.”

Thick clouds a secret place to Him, And He doth not see;' And the circle of the heavens He walketh habitually,

15 ¿ Quieres tú acaso seguir la senda antigua, la que siguieron los hombres perversos

The path of the age dost thou observe, That men of iniquity have trodden?

16 q ue fueron cortados antes de tiempo, cuyos cimientos se derramaron como un río?

Who have been cut down unexpectedly, A flood is poured out on their foundation.

17 E llos decían a Dios: “¡Apártate de nosotros!” ¿Y qué les había hecho el Omnipotente?

Those saying to God, `Turn aside from us,' And what doth the Mighty One to them?

18 H abía colmado de bienes sus casas. ¡Lejos de mí sea el consejo de ellos!

And he hath filled their houses good: (And the counsel of the wicked Hath been far from me.)

19 L o verán los justos y se gozarán, y el inocente se burlará de ellos diciendo:

See do the righteous and they rejoice, And the innocent mocketh at them,

20 “ ¡Nuestros adversarios fueron destruidos y el fuego consumió lo que de ellos había quedado!”

`Surely our substance hath not been cut off, And their excellency hath fire consumed.'

21 » Vuelve ahora en amistad con Dios y tendrás paz; y la prosperidad vendrá a ti.

Acquaint thyself, I pray thee, with Him, And be at peace, Thereby thine increase good.

22 T oma ahora la Ley de su boca y pon sus palabras en tu corazón.

Receive, I pray thee, from His mouth a law, And set His sayings in thy heart.

23 S i te vuelves al Omnipotente, serás edificado y alejarás de tu morada la aflicción.

If thou dost return unto the Mighty Thou art built up, Thou puttest iniquity far from thy tents.

24 T endrás más oro que tierra: como piedras de arroyo, oro de Ofir.

So as to set on the dust a defence, And on a rock of the valleys a covering.

25 ¡ El Todopoderoso será tu oro y tendrás plata en abundancia!

And the Mighty hath been thy defence, And silver strength to thee.

26 E ntonces te deleitarás en el Omnipotente y alzarás a Dios tu rostro.

For then on the Mighty thou delightest thyself, And dost lift up unto God thy face,

27 O rarás a él y él te oirá; y tú cumplirás tus votos.

Thou dost make supplication unto Him, And He doth hear thee, And thy vows thou completest.

28 A simismo se realizará lo que tú determines, y sobre tus caminos resplandecerá la luz.

And thou decreest a saying, And it is established to thee, And on thy ways hath light shone.

29 C uando ellos estén abatidos, dirás tú: “¡Sean enaltecidos!” Entonces Dios salvará al de mirada humilde.

For they have made low, And thou sayest, `Lift up.' And the bowed down of eyes he saveth.

30 É l libertará al inocente; por la pureza de tus manos será liberado.»

He delivereth the not innocent, Yea, he hath been delivered By the cleanness of thy hands.
