1 C uando el cananeo, el rey de Arad, que habitaba en el Neguev, oyó que venía Israel por el camino de Atarim, peleó contra Israel y le tomó algunos prisioneros.

And the Canaanite -- king Arad -- dwelling in the south, heareth that Israel hath come the way of the Atharim, and he fighteth against Israel, and taketh of them captive.

2 E ntonces Israel hizo este voto a Jehová: «Si en efecto entregas este pueblo en mis manos, yo destruiré sus ciudades.»

And Israel voweth a vow to Jehovah, and saith, `If Thou dost certainly give this people into my hand, then I have devoted their cities;'

3 J ehová escuchó la voz de Israel y le entregó al cananeo, y los destruyó a ellos y a sus ciudades. Por eso recibió aquel lugar el nombre de Horma. La serpiente de bronce

and Jehovah hearkeneth to the voice of Israel, and giveth up the Canaanite, and he devoteth them and their cities, and calleth the name of the place Hormah.

4 D espués partieron del monte Hor, camino del Mar Rojo, para rodear la tierra de Edom. Pero se desanimó el pueblo por el camino

And they journey from mount Hor, the way of the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom, and the soul of the people is short in the way,

5 y comenzó a hablar contra Dios y contra Moisés: «¿Por qué nos hiciste subir de Egipto para que muramos en este desierto? Pues no hay pan ni agua, y estamos cansados de este pan tan liviano.»

and the people speak against God, and against Moses, `Why hast thou brought us up out of Egypt to die in a wilderness? for there is no bread, and there is no water, and our soul hath been weary of this light bread.'

6 E ntonces Jehová envió contra el pueblo unas serpientes venenosas que mordían al pueblo, y así murió mucha gente de Israel.

And Jehovah sendeth among the people the burning serpents, and they bite the people, and much people of Israel die;

7 E ntonces el pueblo acudió a Moisés y le dijo: «Hemos pecado por haber hablado contra Jehová y contra ti; ruega a Jehová para que aleje de nosotros estas serpientes.» Moisés oró por el pueblo,

and the people come in unto Moses and say, `We have sinned, for we have spoken against Jehovah, and against thee; pray unto Jehovah, and He doth turn aside from us the serpent;' and Moses prayeth in behalf of the people.

8 y Jehová le respondió: «Hazte una serpiente ardiente y ponla sobre una asta; cualquiera que sea mordido y la mire, vivirá.»

And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Make for thee a burning, and set it on an ensign; and it hath been, every one who is bitten and hath seen it -- he hath lived.

9 H izo Moisés una serpiente de bronce, y la puso sobre una asta. Y cuando alguna serpiente mordía a alguien, este miraba a la serpiente de bronce y vivía. Los israelitas rodean la tierra de Moab

And Moses maketh a serpent of brass, and setteth it on the ensign, and it hath been, if the serpent hath bitten any man, and he hath looked expectingly unto the serpent of brass -- he hath lived.

10 D espués partieron los hijos de Israel y acamparon en Obot.

And the sons of Israel journey, and encamp in Oboth.

11 L uego partieron de Obot y acamparon en Ije-abarim, en el desierto que está enfrente de Moab, hacia el nacimiento del sol.

And they journey from Oboth, and encamp in Ije-Abarim, in the wilderness that on the front of Moab, at the rising of the sun.

12 P artieron de allí y acamparon en el valle de Zered.

From thence they have journeyed, and encamp in the valley of Zared.

13 D e allí partieron y acamparon al otro lado del Arnón, que está en el desierto y que sale del territorio del amorreo, pues el Arnón sirve de límite entre Moab y el amorreo.

From thence they have journeyed, and encamp beyond Arnon, which in the wilderness which is coming out of the border of the Amorite, for Arnon the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorite;

14 P or eso se dice en el libro de las batallas de Jehová: «Lo que hizo en el Mar Rojo y en los arroyos del Arnón;

therefore it is said in a book, `The wars of Jehovah,' -- `Waheb in Suphah, And the brooks of Arnon;

15 y a la corriente de los arroyos que va a parar en Ar y descansa en el límite de Moab.»

And the spring of the brooks, Which turned aside to the dwelling of Ar, And hath leaned to the border of Moab.'

16 D e allí pasaron a Beer: éste es el pozo del cual Jehová dijo a Moisés: «Reúne al pueblo, y les daré agua.»

And from thence to Beer; it the well which Jehovah said to Moses, `Gather the people, and I give to them -- water.'

17 E ntonces, entonó Israel este cántico: «¡Sube, pozo! ¡A él cantad!

Then singeth Israel this song, concerning the well -- they have answered to it:

18 P ozo que cavaron los señores, que cavaron los príncipes del pueblo, con sus cetros, con sus bastones.» Del desierto fueron a Matana,

`A well -- digged it have princes, Prepared it have nobles of the people, With the lawgiver, with their staves.' And from the wilderness to Mattanah,

19 d e Matana a Nahaliel, de Nahaliel a Bamot,

and from Mattanah to Nahaliel, and from Nahaliel to Bamoth,

20 y de Bamot al valle que está en los campos de Moab, y a la cumbre del Pisga, que mira hacia el desierto. Derrota de Sehón, rey amorreo

and from Bamoth in the valley which in the field of Moab the top of Pisgah, which hath looked on the front of the wilderness.

21 E ntonces envió Israel embajadores a Sehón, rey de los amorreos, con este mensaje:

And Israel sendeth messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorite, saying,

22 « Pasaré por tu tierra; no nos iremos por los sembrados ni por las viñas, ni beberemos las aguas de los pozos. Por el camino real iremos, hasta que atravesemos tu territorio.»

`Let me pass through thy land, we do not turn aside into a field, or into a vineyard, we do not drink waters of a well; in the king's way we go, till that we pass over thy border.'

23 P ero Sehón no dejó pasar a Israel por su territorio, sino que juntó Sehón todo su pueblo y salió contra Israel en el desierto, llegó a Jahaza y allí peleó contra Israel.

And Sihon hath not suffered Israel to pass through his border, and Sihon gathereth all his people, and cometh out to meet Israel into the wilderness, and cometh in to Jahaz, and fighteth against Israel.

24 I srael lo hirió a filo de espada y se apoderó de su tierra desde el Arnón hasta el Jaboc, hasta los límites de los hijos de Amón, porque la frontera de los hijos de Amón estaba fortificada.

And Israel smiteth him by the mouth of the sword, and possesseth his land from Arnon unto Jabbok -- unto the sons of Ammon; for the border of the sons of Ammon strong.

25 T omó Israel todas estas ciudades, y habitó Israel en todas las ciudades del amorreo, en Hesbón y en todas sus aldeas.

And Israel taketh all these cities, and Israel dwelleth in all the cities of the Amorite, in Heshbon, and in all its villages;

26 P orque Hesbón era la ciudad de Sehón, rey de los amorreos, el cual había estado en guerra antes con el rey de Moab, y le había quitado todo su territorio hasta el Arnón.

for Heshbon is a city of Sihon king of the Amorite, and he hath fought against the former king of Moab, and taketh all his land out of his hand, unto Arnon;

27 P or eso dicen los proverbistas: «¡Venid a Hesbón! ¡Que sea reedificada! Que sea restaurada la ciudad de Sehón.

therefore those using similes say -- `Enter ye Heshbon, Let the city of Sihon be built and ready,

28 P orque fuego ha salido de Hesbón, y llama de la ciudad de Sehón, que consumió a Ar de Moab, a los señores de las alturas del Arnón.

For fire hath gone out from Heshbon, A flame from the city of Sihon, It hath consumed Ar of Moab, Owners of the high places of Arnon.

29 ¡ Ay de ti, Moab! ¡Pereciste, pueblo de Quemos! Fueron puestos en fuga sus hijos, y sus hijas en cautividad, por Sehón, rey de los amorreos.

Wo to thee, O Moab, Thou hast perished, O people of Chemosh, He hath given his sons who escape -- Also his daughters -- Into captivity, to a king of the Amorite -- Sihon!

30 M as devastamos su reino; pereció Hesbón hasta Dibón, y destruimos hasta Nofa y Medeba.» Israel derrota a Og, rey de Basán

And we shoot them, Perished hath Heshbon unto Dibon, And we make desolate unto Nophah, Which unto Medeba.'

31 A sí habitó Israel en la tierra del amorreo.

And Israel dwelleth in the land of the Amorite,

32 T ambién envió Moisés a reconocer a Jazer; y tomaron sus aldeas y echaron al amorreo que estaba allí.

and Moses sendeth to spy out Jaazer, and they capture its villages, and dispossess the Amorite who there,

33 D espués volvieron y subieron camino de Basán. Salió contra ellos Og, rey de Basán, junto con toda su gente, para pelear en Edrei.

and turn and go up the way of Bashan, and Og king of Bashan cometh out to meet them, he and all his people, to battle, Edrei.

34 E ntonces Jehová dijo a Moisés: «No le tengas miedo, porque en tus manos lo he entregado, a él con todo su pueblo y su tierra. Harás con él como hiciste con Sehón, rey de los amorreos, que habitaba en Hesbón.»

And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Fear him not, for into thy hand I have given him, and all his people, and his land, and thou hast done to him as thou hast done to Sihon king of the Amorite, who is dwelling in Heshbon.'

35 A sí lo hirieron a él, a sus hijos y a toda su gente, sin que quedara uno con vida, y se apoderaron de su tierra.

And they smite him, and his sons, and all his people, until he hath not left to him a remnant, and they possess his land.
