1 E n aquellos días, cuando no había rey en Israel, hubo un levita que vivía como forastero en la parte más remota de los montes de Efraín. Había tomado para sí, como concubina, a una mujer de Belén de Judá;

And it cometh to pass, in those days, when there is no king in Israel, that there is a man a Levite, a sojourner in the sides of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he taketh to him a wife, a concubine, out of Beth-Lehem-Judah;

2 p ero su concubina le fue infiel, lo abandonó y se fue a casa de su padre, en Belén de Judá, y estuvo allá durante cuatro meses.

and commit whoredom against him doth his concubine, and she goeth from him unto the house of her father, unto Beth-Lehem-Judah, and is there days -- four months.

3 S e levantó su marido y fue tras ella para hablarle amorosamente y hacerla volver. Llevaba consigo un criado y un par de asnos. La mujer lo hizo entrar en la casa de su padre.

And her husband riseth and goeth after her, to speak unto her heart, to bring her back, and his young man with him, and a couple of asses; and she bringeth him into the house of her father, and the father of the young woman seeth him, and rejoiceth to meet him.

4 A l verlo, el padre de la joven salió a recibirlo gozoso. Lo detuvo su suegro, el padre de la joven, y se quedó en su casa tres días, comiendo, bebiendo y alojándose allí.

And keep hold on him doth his father-in-law, father of the young woman, and he abideth with him three days, and they eat and drink, and lodge there.

5 A l cuarto día, cuando se levantaron de mañana, se levantó también el levita para irse, pero el padre de la joven dijo a su yerno: —Conforta tu corazón con un bocado de pan y después os iréis.

And it cometh to pass, on the fourth day, that they rise early in the morning, and he riseth to go, and the father of the young woman saith unto his son-in-law, `Support thy heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward ye go on.'

6 S e sentaron ellos dos juntos, comieron y bebieron. El padre de la joven pidió al hombre: —Te ruego que pases aquí la noche, y de seguro se alegrará tu corazón.

And they sit and eat both of them together, and drink, and the father of the young woman saith unto the man, `Be willing, I pray thee, and lodge all night, and let thy heart be glad.'

7 S e levantó el hombre para irse, pero insistió su suegro y volvió a pasar la noche allí.

And the man riseth to go, and his father-in-law presseth on him, and he turneth back and lodgeth there.

8 A l quinto día, levantándose de mañana para irse, le dijo el padre de la joven: —Conforta ahora tu corazón y aguarda hasta que decline el día. Y ambos comieron juntos.

And he riseth early in the morning, on the fifth day, to go, and the father of the young woman saith, `Support, I pray thee, thy heart;' and they have tarried till the turning of the day, and they eat, both of them.

9 L uego el hombre se levantó para irse con su concubina y su criado. Entonces su suegro, el padre de la joven, le dijo: —Ya el día declina y va a anochecer; te ruego que paséis aquí la noche. Puesto que el día se acaba, duerme aquí, para que se alegre tu corazón. Mañana os levantaréis temprano y os pondréis en camino, y te irás a tu casa.

And the man riseth to go, he and his concubine, and his young man, and his father-in-law, father of the young woman, saith to him, `Lo, I pray thee, the day hath fallen toward evening, lodge all night, I pray thee; lo, the declining of the day! lodge here, and let thine heart be glad -- and ye have risen early to-morrow for your journey, and thou hast gone to thy tent.'

10 P ero el hombre no quiso pasar allí la noche, sino que se levantó y se fue. Llegó frente a Jebús, que es Jerusalén, con su par de asnos ensillados y su concubina.

And the man hath not been willing to lodge all night, and he riseth, and goeth, and cometh in till over-against Jebus (It Jerusalem), and with him a couple of asses saddled; and his concubine with him.

11 E stando ya junto a Jebús, el día había declinado mucho; y dijo el criado a su señor: —Ven ahora, vámonos a esta ciudad de los jebuseos, para que pasemos en ella la noche.

They near Jebus, and the day hath gone greatly down, and the young man saith unto his lord, `Come, I pray thee, and we turn aside unto this city of the Jebusite, and lodge in it.'

12 S u señor le respondió: —No iremos a ninguna ciudad de extranjeros, que no sea de los hijos de Israel, sino que seguiremos hasta Gabaa. Y añadió:

And his lord saith unto him, `Let us not turn aside unto the city of a stranger, that is not of the sons of Israel, thither, but we have passed over unto Gibeah.'

13 — Ven, sigamos hasta uno de esos lugares, para pasar la noche en Gabaa o en Ramá.

And he saith to his young man, `Come, and we draw near to one of the places, and have lodged in Gibeah, or in Ramah.'

14 A sí, pues, siguieron adelante, y cuando se les puso el sol estaban junto a Gabaa, ciudad de la tribu de Benjamín.

And they pass over, and go on, and the sun goeth in upon them near Gibeah, which is to Benjamin;

15 E ntonces se apartaron del camino y entraron en Gabaa para pasar allí la noche, pero se sentaron en la plaza de la ciudad, porque no hubo quien los acogiera en su casa para pasar la noche.

and they turn aside there to go in to lodge in Gibeah, and he goeth in and sitteth in a broad place of the city, and there is no man gathering them into the house to lodge.

16 L legó entonces un hombre viejo que venía de su trabajo del campo al anochecer, el cual era de los montes de Efraín y vivía como forastero en Gabaa, pues los habitantes de aquel lugar eran hijos de Benjamín.

And lo, a man, an aged one, hath come from his work from the field in the evening, and the man of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he a sojourner in Gibeah, and the men of the place Benjamites.

17 A lzando el viejo los ojos vio a aquel caminante en la plaza de la ciudad, y le dijo: —¿A dónde vas y de dónde vienes?

And he lifteth up his eyes, and seeth the man, the traveller, in a broad place of the city, and the aged man saith, `Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?'

18 É l respondió: —Venimos de Belén de Judá y vamos a la parte más remota de los montes de Efraín, de donde soy. Estuve en Belén de Judá, pero ahora voy a la casa de Jehová y no hay quien me reciba en su casa.

And he saith unto him, `We are passing over from Beth-Lehem-Judah unto the sides of the hill-country of Ephraim -- thence I, and I go unto Beth-Lehem-Judah; and to the house of Jehovah I am going, and there is no man gathering me into the house,

19 T enemos paja y forraje para nuestros asnos; también tenemos pan y vino para mí y para tu sierva, y para el criado que está con tu siervo. No nos falta nada.

and both straw and provender are for our asses, and also bread and wine there are for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man with thy servants; there is no lack of anything.'

20 E l hombre anciano le dijo entonces: —La paz sea contigo. Tu necesidad toda quede solamente a mi cargo, con tal que no pases la noche en la plaza.

And the old man saith, `Peace to thee; only, all thy lack on me, only in the broad place lodge not.'

21 L os trajo a su casa y dio de comer a sus asnos; se lavaron los pies, y comieron y bebieron.

And he bringeth him in to his house, and mixeth for the asses, and they wash their feet, and eat and drink.

22 P ero cuando estaban gozosos, los hombres de aquella ciudad, hombres perversos, rodearon la casa, golpearon a la puerta y le dijeron al anciano dueño de la casa: —Saca al hombre que ha entrado en tu casa, para que lo conozcamos.

They are making their heart glad, and lo, men of the city, men -- sons of worthlessness -- have gone round about the house, beating on the door, and they speak unto the old man, the master of the house, saying, `Bring out the man who hath come unto thine house, and we know him.'

23 S alió a su encuentro el dueño de la casa y les dijo: —No, hermanos míos, os ruego que no cometáis este mal. Puesto que este hombre es mi huésped, no hagáis esta maldad.

And the man, the master of the house, goeth out unto them, and saith unto them, `Nay, my brethren, do not evil, I pray you, after that this man hath come in unto my house, do not this folly;

24 A quí está mi hija virgen y la concubina de él; yo os las sacaré ahora: humilladlas y haced con ellas como os parezca, pero no hagáis a este hombre cosa tan infame.

lo, my daughter, the virgin, and his concubine, let me bring them out, I pray you, and humble ye them, and do to them that which is good in your eyes, and to this man do not this foolish thing.'

25 P ero ellos no lo quisieron oír. Así que el levita tomó a su concubina y la sacó. Aquellos hombres entraron a ella, abusaron de ella toda la noche hasta la mañana y la dejaron cuando apuntaba el alba.

And the men have not been willing to hearken to him, and the man taketh hold on his concubine, and bringeth out unto them without, and they know her, and roll themselves upon her all the night, till the morning, and send her away in the ascending of the dawn;

26 C uando ya amanecía, vino la mujer y cayó delante de la puerta de la casa de aquel hombre donde su señor estaba, hasta que fue de día.

and the woman cometh in at the turning of the morning, and falleth at the opening of the man's house, where her lord, till the light.

27 S e levantó por la mañana su señor, abrió las puertas de la casa y salió para seguir su camino, pero allí estaba su concubina tendida delante de la puerta de la casa, con las manos sobre el umbral.

And her lord riseth in the morning, and openeth the doors of the house, and goeth out to go on his way, and lo, the woman, his concubine, is fallen at the opening of the house, and her hands on the threshold,

28 E l levita le dijo: —Levántate y vámonos. Pero ella no respondió. Entonces aquel hombre la levantó y, echándola sobre su asno, se fue a su lugar.

and he saith unto her, `Rise, and we go;' and there is none answering, and he taketh her on the ass, and the man riseth and goeth to his place,

29 A l llegar a su casa, tomó un cuchillo, echó mano de su concubina, la partió por sus huesos en doce partes y la envió por todo el territorio de Israel.

and cometh in unto his house, and taketh the knife, and layeth hold on his concubine, and cutteth her in pieces to her bones -- into twelve pieces, and sendeth her into all the border of Israel.

30 Y todo el que veía aquello decía: «Jamás se ha hecho ni visto tal cosa desde el tiempo en que los hijos de Israel subieron de la tierra de Egipto hasta hoy. Considerad esto, tomad consejo y hablad.»

And it hath come to pass, every one who seeth hath said, `There hath not been -- yea, there hath not been seen like this, from the day of the coming up of the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt till this day; set your upon it, take counsel, and speak.'
