1 E staba enfermo uno llamado Lázaro, de Betania, la aldea de María y de Marta, su hermana.

And there was a certain one ailing, Lazarus, from Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister --

2 ( María, cuyo hermano Lázaro estaba enfermo, fue la que ungió al Señor con perfume y le secó los pies con sus cabellos).

and it was Mary who did anoint the Lord with ointment, and did wipe his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ailing --

3 E nviaron, pues, las hermanas a decir a Jesús: —Señor, el que amas está enfermo.

therefore sent the sisters unto him, saying, `Sir, lo, he whom thou dost love is ailing;'

4 J esús, al oírlo, dijo: —Esta enfermedad no es para muerte, sino para la gloria de Dios, para que el Hijo de Dios sea glorificado por ella.

and Jesus having heard, said, `This ailment is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.'

5 Y amaba Jesús a Marta, a su hermana y a Lázaro.

And Jesus was loving Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus,

6 C uando oyó, pues, que estaba enfermo, se quedó dos días más en el lugar donde estaba.

when, therefore, he heard that he is ailing, then indeed he remained in the place in which he was two days,

7 L uego, después de esto, dijo a los discípulos: —Vamos de nuevo a Judea.

then after this, he saith to the disciples, `We may go to Judea again;'

8 L e dijeron los discípulos: —Rabí, hace poco los judíos intentaban apedrearte, ¿y otra vez vas allá?

the disciples say to him, `Rabbi, now were the Jews seeking to stone thee, and again thou dost go thither!'

9 R espondió Jesús: —¿No tiene el día doce horas? El que anda de día no tropieza, porque ve la luz de este mundo;

Jesus answered, `Are there not twelve hours in the day? if any one may walk in the day, he doth not stumble, because the light of this world he doth see;

10 p ero el que anda de noche, tropieza, porque no hay luz en él.

and if any one may walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.'

11 D icho esto, agregó: —Nuestro amigo Lázaro duerme, pero voy a despertarlo.

These things he said, and after this he saith to them, `Lazarus our friend hath fallen asleep, but I go on that I may awake him;'

12 D ijeron entonces sus discípulos: —Señor, si duerme, sanará.

therefore said his disciples, `Sir, if he hath fallen asleep, he will be saved;'

13 J esús decía esto de la muerte de Lázaro, pero ellos pensaron que hablaba del reposar del sueño.

but Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that about the repose of sleep he speaketh.

14 E ntonces Jesús les dijo claramente: —Lázaro ha muerto,

Then, therefore, Jesus said to them freely, `Lazarus hath died;

15 y me alegro por vosotros de no haber estado allí, para que creáis; pero vamos a él.

and I rejoice, for your sake, (that ye may believe,) that I was not there; but we may go to him;'

16 D ijo entonces Tomás, llamado Dídimo, a sus condiscípulos: —Vamos también nosotros, para que muramos con él. Jesús, la resurrección y la vida

therefore said Thomas, who is called Didymus, to the fellow-disciples, `We may go -- we also, that we may die with him,'

17 L legó, pues, Jesús y halló que hacía ya cuatro días que Lázaro estaba en el sepulcro.

Jesus, therefore, having come, found him having been four days already in the tomb.

18 B etania estaba cerca de Jerusalén, como a quince estadios,

And Bethany was nigh to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off,

19 y muchos de los judíos habían venido a Marta y a María, para consolarlas por su hermano.

and many of the Jews had come unto Martha and Mary, that they might comfort them concerning their brother;

20 E ntonces Marta, cuando oyó que Jesús llegaba, salió a encontrarlo, pero María se quedó en casa.

Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus doth come, met him, and Mary kept sitting in the house.

21 M arta dijo a Jesús: —Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, mi hermano no habría muerto.

Martha, therefore, said unto Jesus, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;

22 P ero también sé ahora que todo lo que pidas a Dios, Dios te lo dará.

but even now, I have known that whatever thou mayest ask of God, God will give to thee;'

23 J esús le dijo: —Tu hermano resucitará.

Jesus saith to her, `Thy brother shall rise again.'

24 M arta le dijo: —Yo sé que resucitará en la resurrección, en el día final.

Martha saith to him, `I have known that he will rise again, in the rising again in the last day;'

25 L e dijo Jesús: —Yo soy la resurrección y la vida; el que cree en mí, aunque esté muerto, vivirá.

Jesus said to her, `I am the rising again, and the life; he who is believing in me, even if he may die, shall live;

26 Y todo aquel que vive y cree en mí, no morirá eternamente. ¿Crees esto?

and every one who is living and believing in me shall not die -- to the age;

27 L e dijo: —Sí, Señor; yo he creído que tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, que has venido al mundo. Jesús llora ante la tumba de Lázaro

believest thou this?' she saith to him, `Yes, sir, I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming to the world.'

28 H abiendo dicho esto, fue y llamó a María su hermana, diciéndole en secreto: —El Maestro está aquí, y te llama.

And these things having said, she went away, and called Mary her sister privately, saying, `The Teacher is present, and doth call thee;'

29 E lla, cuando lo oyó, se levantó de prisa y fue a él.

she, when she heard, riseth up quickly, and doth come to him;

30 J esús todavía no había entrado en la aldea, sino que estaba en el lugar donde Marta lo había encontrado.

and Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was in the place where Martha met him;

31 E ntonces los judíos que estaban en casa con ella y la consolaban, cuando vieron que María se había levantado de prisa y había salido, la siguieron, diciendo: —Va al sepulcro, a llorar allí.

the Jews, therefore, who were with her in the house, and were comforting her, having seen Mary that she rose up quickly and went forth, followed her, saying -- `She doth go away to the tomb, that she may weep there.'

32 M aría, cuando llegó a donde estaba Jesús, al verlo, se postró a sus pies, diciéndole: —Señor, si hubieras estado aquí, no habría muerto mi hermano.

Mary, therefore, when she came where Jesus was, having seen him, fell at his feet, saying to him, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;'

33 J esús entonces, al verla llorando y a los judíos que la acompañaban, también llorando, se estremeció en espíritu y se conmovió,

Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, did groan in the spirit, and troubled himself, and he said,

34 y preguntó: —¿Dónde lo pusisteis? Le dijeron: —Señor, ven y ve.

`Where have ye laid him?' they say to him, `Sir, come and see;'

35 J esús lloró.

Jesus wept.

36 D ijeron entonces los judíos: —¡Mirad cuánto lo amaba!

The Jews, therefore, said, `Lo, how he was loving him!'

37 Y algunos de ellos dijeron: —¿No podía éste, que abrió los ojos al ciego, haber hecho también que Lázaro no muriera? Resurrección de Lázaro

and certain of them said, `Was not this one, who did open the eyes of the blind man, able to cause that also this one might not have died?'

38 J esús, profundamente conmovido otra vez, vino al sepulcro. Era una cueva y tenía una piedra puesta encima.

Jesus, therefore, again groaning in himself, cometh to the tomb, and it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it,

39 D ijo Jesús: —Quitad la piedra. Marta, la hermana del que había muerto, le dijo: —Señor, hiede ya, porque lleva cuatro días.

Jesus saith, `Take ye away the stone;' the sister of him who hath died -- Martha -- saith to him, `Sir, already he stinketh, for he is four days dead;'

40 J esús le dijo: —¿No te he dicho que si crees verás la gloria de Dios?

Jesus saith to her, `Said I not to thee, that if thou mayest believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?'

41 E ntonces quitaron la piedra de donde había sido puesto el muerto. Y Jesús, alzando los ojos a lo alto, dijo: —Padre, gracias te doy por haberme oído.

They took away, therefore, the stone where the dead was laid, and Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, `Father, I thank Thee, that Thou didst hear me;

42 Y o sé que siempre me oyes; pero lo dije por causa de la multitud que está alrededor, para que crean que tú me has enviado.

and I knew that Thou always dost hear me, but, because of the multitude that is standing by, I said, that they may believe that Thou didst send me.'

43 Y habiendo dicho esto, clamó a gran voz: —¡Lázaro, ven fuera!

And these things saying, with a loud voice he cried out, `Lazarus, come forth;'

44 Y el que había muerto salió, atadas las manos y los pies con vendas, y el rostro envuelto en un sudario. Jesús les dijo: —Desatadlo y dejadlo ir. El complot para matar a Jesús

and he who died came forth, being bound feet and hands with grave-clothes, and his visage with a napkin was bound about; Jesus saith to them, `Loose him, and suffer to go.'

45 E ntonces muchos de los judíos que habían ido para acompañar a María y vieron lo que había hecho Jesús, creyeron en él.

Many, therefore, of the Jews who came unto Mary, and beheld what Jesus did, believed in him;

46 P ero algunos de ellos fueron a los fariseos y les dijeron lo que Jesús había hecho.

but certain of them went away unto the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus did;

47 E ntonces los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos reunieron el Concilio, y dijeron: —¿Qué haremos?, pues este hombre hace muchas señales.

the chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered together a sanhedrim, and said, `What may we do? because this man doth many signs?

48 S i lo dejamos así, todos creerán en él, y vendrán los romanos y destruirán nuestro lugar santo y nuestra nación.

if we may let him alone thus, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and will take away both our place and nation.'

49 E ntonces Caifás, uno de ellos, sumo sacerdote aquel año, les dijo: —Vosotros no sabéis nada,

and a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being chief priest of that year, said to them, `Ye have not known anything,

50 n i os dais cuenta de que nos conviene que un hombre muera por el pueblo, y no que toda la nación perezca.

nor reason that it is good for us that one man may die for the people, and not the whole nation perish.'

51 E sto no lo dijo por sí mismo, sino que como era el sumo sacerdote aquel año, profetizó que Jesús había de morir por la nación;

And this he said not of himself, but being chief priest of that year, he did prophesy that Jesus was about to die for the nation,

52 y no solamente por la nación, sino también para congregar en uno a los hijos de Dios que estaban dispersos.

and not for the nation only, but that also the children of God, who have been scattered abroad, he may gather together into one.

53 A sí que desde aquel día acordaron matarlo.

From that day, therefore, they took counsel together that they may kill him;

54 P or eso, Jesús ya no andaba abiertamente entre los judíos, sino que se alejó de allí a la región contigua al desierto, a una ciudad llamada Efraín, y se quedó allí con sus discípulos.

Jesus, therefore, was no more freely walking among the Jews, but went away thence to the region nigh the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there he tarried with his disciples.

55 S e acercaba la Pascua de los judíos, y muchos subieron de aquella región a Jerusalén, antes de la Pascua, para purificarse.

And the passover of the Jews was nigh, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves;

56 B uscaban a Jesús y se preguntaban unos a otros en el Templo: —¿Qué os parece? ¿No vendrá a la fiesta?

they were seeking, therefore, Jesus, and said one with another, standing in the temple, `What doth appear to you -- that he may not come to the feast?'

57 L os principales sacerdotes y los fariseos habían dado orden de que si alguno se enteraba de dónde estaba, informara de ello, para prenderlo.

and both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if any one may know where he is, he may shew, so that they may seize him.
