1 L os hijos de Israel hicieron lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová, y Jehová los entregó en manos de Madián por siete años.

And the sons of Israel do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, and Jehovah giveth them into the hand of Midian seven years,

2 C omo la mano de Madián los oprimía cada vez más, los hijos de Israel, por temor a los madianitas, se hicieron cuevas en los montes, cavernas y lugares fortificados.

and the hand of Midian is strong against Israel, from the presence of Midian have the sons of Israel made for themselves the flowings which in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

3 P ues sucedía que cuando Israel tenía algo sembrado, subían los madianitas y amalecitas y los hijos del oriente contra ellos; subían y los atacaban.

And it hath been, if Israel hath sowed, that Midian hath come up, and Amalek, and the sons of the east, yea, they have come up against him,

4 A campaban frente a ellos y destruían los frutos de la tierra, hasta llegar a Gaza. No dejaban qué comer en Israel, ni ovejas ni bueyes ni asnos.

and encamp against them, and destroy the increase of the land till thine entering Gaza; and they leave no sustenance in Israel, either sheep, or ox, or ass;

5 C on sus tiendas y sus ganados, subían como una inmensa nube de langostas. Ellos y sus camellos eran innumerables, y venían a la tierra para devastarla.

for they and their cattle come up, with their tents; they come in as the fulness of the locust for multitude, and of them and of their cattle there is no number, and they come into the land to destroy it.

6 D e este modo se empobrecía Israel en gran manera por causa de Madián. Y los hijos de Israel clamaron a Jehová.

And Israel is very weak from the presence of Midian, and the sons of Israel cry unto Jehovah.

7 C uando los hijos de Israel clamaron a Jehová a causa de los madianitas,

And it cometh to pass when the sons of Israel have cried unto Jehovah, concerning Midian,

8 J ehová les envió un profeta, el cual les dijo: «Así ha dicho Jehová, Dios de Israel: “Yo os hice salir de Egipto y os saqué de la casa de servidumbre.

that Jehovah sendeth a man, a prophet, unto the sons of Israel, and he saith to them, `Thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, I -- I have brought you up out of Egypt, and I bring you out from a house of servants,

9 O s libré de manos de los egipcios y de manos de todos los que os afligieron, a los cuales eché de delante de vosotros, y os di su tierra.

and I deliver you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all your oppressors, and I cast them out from your presence, and I give to you their land,

10 T ambién os dije: ‘Yo soy Jehová, vuestro Dios: No temáis a los dioses de los amorreos en cuya tierra habitáis.’ Sin embargo, no habéis obedecido a mi voz.”»

and I say to you, I Jehovah your God, ye do not fear the gods of the Amorite in whose land ye are dwelling: -- and ye have not hearkened to My voice.'

11 E ntonces vino el ángel de Jehová y se sentó debajo de la encina que está en Ofra, la cual era de Joás abiezerita. Gedeón, su hijo, estaba sacudiendo el trigo en el lagar, para esconderlo de los madianitas,

And the messenger of Jehovah cometh and sitteth under the oak which in Ophrah, which to Joash the Abi-Ezrite, and Gideon his son is beating out wheat in the wine-press, to remove from the presence of the Midianites;

12 c uando se le apareció el ángel de Jehová y le dijo: —Jehová está contigo, hombre esforzado y valiente.

and the messenger of Jehovah appeareth unto him, and saith unto him, `Jehovah with thee, O mighty one of valour.'

13 G edeón le respondió: —Ah, señor mío, si Jehová está con nosotros, ¿por qué nos ha sobrevenido todo esto? ¿Dónde están todas esas maravillas que nuestros padres nos han contado? Decían: “¿No nos sacó Jehová de Egipto?” Y ahora Jehová nos ha desamparado y nos ha entregado en manos de los madianitas.

And Gideon saith unto him, `O, my lord -- and Jehovah is with us! -- and why hath all this found us? and where all His wonders which our fathers recounted to us, saying, Hath not Jehovah brought us up out of Egypt? and now Jehovah hath left us, and doth give us into the hand of Midian.'

14 M irándolo Jehová, le dijo: —Ve con esta tu fuerza y salvarás a Israel de manos de los madianitas. ¿No te envío yo?

And Jehovah turneth unto him and saith, `Go in this -- thy power; and thou hast saved Israel out of the hand of Midian -- have not I sent thee.'

15 G edeón le respondió de nuevo: —Ah, señor mío, ¿con qué salvaré yo a Israel? He aquí que mi familia es pobre en Manasés, y yo soy el menor en la casa de mi padre.

And he saith unto him, `O, my lord, wherewith do I save Israel? lo, my chief weak in Manasseh, and I the least in the house of my father.'

16 J ehová le dijo: —Ciertamente yo estaré contigo, y tú derrotarás a los madianitas como a un solo hombre.

And Jehovah saith unto him, `Because I am with thee -- thou hast smitten the Midianites as one man.'

17 É l respondió: —Yo te ruego que si he hallado gracia delante de ti, me des señal de que has hablado conmigo.

And he saith unto Him, `If, I pray Thee, I have found grace in Thine eyes, then Thou hast done for me a sign that Thou art speaking with me.

18 T e ruego que no te vayas de aquí hasta que vuelva a ti y saque mi ofrenda y la ponga delante de ti. Jehová le contestó: —Yo esperaré hasta que vuelvas.

Move not, I pray Thee, from this, till my coming in unto Thee, and I have brought out my present, and put it before Thee;' and he saith, `I -- I do abide till thy return.'

19 G edeón se fue, preparó un cabrito y panes sin levadura de un efa de harina, puso la carne en un canastillo y el caldo en una olla y, sacándolo se lo presentó debajo de aquella encina.

And Gideon hath gone in, and prepareth a kid of the goats, and of an ephah of flour unleavened things; the flesh he hath put in a basket, and the broth he hath put in a pot, and he bringeth out unto Him, unto the place of the oak, and bringeth nigh.

20 E ntonces el ángel de Dios le dijo: —Toma la carne y los panes sin levadura, ponlos sobre esta peña y vierte el caldo. Él lo hizo así.

And the messenger of God saith unto him, `Take the flesh and the unleavened things, and place on this rock -- and the broth pour out;' and he doth so.

21 E xtendiendo el ángel de Jehová el cayado que tenía en su mano, tocó con la punta la carne y los panes sin levadura, y subió fuego de la peña, el cual consumió la carne y los panes sin levadura. Luego el ángel de Jehová desapareció de su vista.

And the messenger of Jehovah putteth forth the end of the staff which in His hand, and cometh against the flesh, and against the unleavened things, and the fire goeth up out of the rock and consumeth the flesh and the unleavened things -- and the messenger of Jehovah hath gone from his eyes.

22 A l ver Gedeón que era el ángel de Jehová, dijo: —Ah, Señor Jehová, he visto al ángel de Jehová cara a cara.

And Gideon seeth that He a messenger of Jehovah, and Gideon saith, `Alas, Lord Jehovah! because that I have seen a messenger of Jehovah face to face!'

23 P ero Jehová le dijo: —La paz sea contigo. No tengas temor, no morirás.

And Jehovah saith to him, `Peace to thee; fear not; thou dost not die.'

24 G edeón edificó allí altar a Jehová y lo llamó Jehová-salom. Este altar permanece hasta hoy en Ofra de los abiezeritas.

And Gideon buildeth there an altar to Jehovah, and calleth it Jehovah-Shalom, unto this day it yet in Ophrah of the Abi-Ezrites.

25 A conteció que esa misma noche le dijo Jehová: «Toma un toro del hato de tu padre, el segundo toro, el de siete años, y derriba el altar de Baal que tiene tu padre; corta también la imagen de Asera que se halla junto a él

And it cometh to pass, on that night, that Jehovah saith to him, `Take the young ox which to thy father, and the second bullock of seven years, and thou hast thrown down the altar of Baal which to thy father, and the shrine which by it thou dost cut down,

26 y edifica altar a Jehová, tu Dios, en la cumbre de este peñasco, en lugar conveniente. Toma después aquel segundo toro y sacrifícalo en holocausto con la madera de la imagen de Asera que habrás cortado.»

and thou hast built an altar to Jehovah thy God on the top of this stronghold, by the arrangement, and hast taken the second bullock, and caused to ascend a burnt-offering with the wood of the shrine which thou cuttest down.'

27 E ntonces Gedeón tomó diez hombres de entre sus siervos e hizo como Jehová le dijo. Pero temiendo hacerlo de día, a causa de la familia de su padre y de los hombres de la ciudad, lo hizo de noche.

And Gideon taketh ten men of his servants, and doth as Jehovah hath spoken unto him, and it cometh to pass, because he hath been afraid of the house of his father, and the men of the city, to do by day, that he doth by night.

28 P or la mañana, cuando los de la ciudad se levantaron, el altar de Baal estaba derribado, y había sido cortada la imagen de Asera que se hallaba junto a él, y ofrecido aquel toro segundo en holocausto sobre el altar edificado.

And the men of the city rise early in the morning, and lo, broken down hath been the altar of Baal, and the shrine which is by it hath been cut down, and the second bullock hath been offered on the altar which is built.

29 Y unos a otros se preguntaban: —¿Quién ha hecho esto? Buscando e inquiriendo, les dijeron: —Gedeón hijo de Joás lo ha hecho. Entonces los hombres de la ciudad dijeron a Joás:

And they say one to another, `Who hath done this thing?' and they inquire and seek, and they say, `Gideon son of Joash hath done this thing.'

30 — Saca a tu hijo, para que muera, porque ha derribado el altar de Baal y ha cortado la imagen de Asera que se hallaba junto a él.

And the men of the city say unto Joash, `Bring out thy son, and he dieth, because he hath broken down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the shrine which by it.'

31 P ero Joás respondió a todos los que estaban junto a él: —¿Lucharéis vosotros por Baal? ¿Defenderéis su causa? Cualquiera que contienda por él, que muera esta mañana. Si es un dios, que luche por sí mismo con quien derribó su altar.

And Joash saith to all who have stood against him, `Ye, do ye plead for Baal? ye -- do ye save him? he who pleadeth for him is put to death during the morning; if he a god he himself doth plead against him, because he hath broken down his altar.'

32 A quel día Gedeón fue llamado Jerobaal, esto es: “Luche Baal contra él”, por cuanto derribó su altar.

And he calleth him, on that day, Jerubbaal, saying, `The Baal doth plead against him, because he hath broken down his altar.'

33 P ero todos los madianitas y amalecitas y los del oriente se juntaron a una, y cruzando el Jordán acamparon en el valle de Jezreel.

And all Midian and Amalek and the sons of the east have been gathered together, and pass over, and encamp in the valley of Jezreel,

34 E ntonces el espíritu de Jehová vino sobre Gedeón, y cuando éste tocó el cuerno, los abiezeritas se reunieron con él.

and the Spirit of Jehovah hath clothed Gideon, and he bloweth with a trumpet, and Abi-Ezer is called after him;

35 E nvió mensajeros por todo Manasés, y también ellos se le unieron; asimismo envió mensajeros a Aser, a Zabulón y a Neftalí, los cuales salieron a su encuentro.

and messengers he hath sent into all Manasseh, and it also is called after him; and messengers he hath sent into Asher, and into Zebulun, and into Naphtali, and they come up to meet them.

36 G edeón dijo a Dios: «Si has de salvar a Israel por mi mano, como has dicho,

And Gideon saith unto God, `If Thou art Saviour of Israel by my hand, as Thou hast spoken,

37 h e aquí que yo pondré un vellón de lana en la era; si el rocío está sobre el vellón solamente, y queda seca toda la otra tierra, entonces entenderé que salvarás a Israel por mi mano, como lo has dicho.»

lo, I am placing the fleece of wool in the threshing-floor: if dew is on the fleece alone, and on all the earth drought -- then I have known that Thou dost save Israel by my hand, as Thou hast spoken;'

38 Y así aconteció, pues cuando se levantó de mañana, exprimió el vellón para sacarle el rocío, y llenó con él un tazón de agua.

and it is so, and he riseth early on the morrow, and presseth the fleece, and wringeth dew out of the fleece -- the fulness of the bowl, of water.

39 P ero Gedeón dijo a Dios: «No se encienda tu ira contra mí si hablo de nuevo: probaré ahora otra vez con el vellón. Te ruego que solamente el vellón quede seco, y el rocío caiga sobre la tierra.»

And Gideon saith unto God, `Let not Thine anger burn against me, and I speak only this time; let me try, I pray Thee, only this time with the fleece -- let there be, I pray Thee, drought on the fleece alone, and on all the earth let there be dew.'

40 A quella noche lo hizo Dios así; sólo el vellón quedó seco, y en toda la tierra hubo rocío.

And God doth so on that night, and there is drought on the fleece alone, and on all the earth there hath been dew.
