1 E ntonces se juntó todo el pueblo como un solo hombre en la plaza que está delante de la puerta de las Aguas, y dijeron al escriba Esdras que trajera el libro de la ley de Moisés, la cual Jehová había dado a Israel.

And all the people are gathered as one man unto the broad place that before the water-gate, and they say to Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, that Jehovah commanded Israel.

2 E l primer día del mes séptimo, el sacerdote Esdras trajo la Ley delante de la congregación, así de hombres como de mujeres y de todos los que podían entender.

And Ezra the priest bringeth the law before the assembly, both of men and women, and every one intelligent to hear, on the first day of the seventh month,

3 D esde el alba hasta el mediodía, leyó en el libro delante de la plaza que está delante de la puerta de las Aguas, en presencia de hombres y mujeres y de todos los que podían entender; y los oídos de todo el pueblo estaban atentos al libro de la Ley.

and he readeth in it before the broad place that before the water-gate, from the light till the middle of the day, over-against the men, and the women, and those intelligent, and the ears of all the people unto the book of the law.

4 Y el escriba Esdras estaba sobre un estrado de madera que habían levantado para esa ocasión, y junto a él estaban, a su derecha, Matatías, Sema, Anías, Urías, Hilcías y Maasías; y a su mano izquierda, Pedaías, Misael, Malquías, Hasum, Hasbadana, Zacarías y Mesulam.

And Ezra the scribe standeth on a tower of wood that they made for the purpose, and Mattithiah standeth near him, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right; and on his left Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchijah, and Hashum, and Hashbaddana, Zechariah, Meshullam.

5 A brió, pues, Esdras el libro ante los ojos de todo el pueblo —pues estaba más alto que todo el pueblo—; y cuando lo abrió, el pueblo entero estuvo atento.

And Ezra openeth the book before the eyes of all the people -- for above all the people he hath been -- and at his opening all the people have stood up,

6 B endijo entonces Esdras a Jehová, Dios grande. Y todo el pueblo, alzando sus manos, respondió: «¡Amén! ¡Amén!»; y se humillaron, adorando a Jehová rostro en tierra.

and Ezra blesseth Jehovah, the great God, and all the people answer, `Amen, Amen,' with lifting up of their hands, and they bow and do obeisance to Jehovah -- faces to the earth.

7 L os levitas Jesúa, Bani, Serebías, Jamín, Acub, Sabetai, Hodías, Maasías, Kelita, Azarías, Jozabed, Hanán y Pelaía, hacían entender al pueblo la Ley, mientras el pueblo se mantenía atento en su lugar.

And Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, giving the people understanding in the law, and the people, on their station,

8 Y leían claramente en el libro de la ley de Dios, y explicaban su sentido, de modo que entendieran la lectura.

and they read in the book, in the law of God, explaining -- so as to give the meaning, and they give understanding to the convocation.

9 E ntonces el gobernador Nehemías, el sacerdote y escriba Esdras y los levitas que hacían entender al pueblo dijeron a todo el pueblo: «Hoy es día consagrado a Jehová, nuestro Dios; no os entristezcáis ni lloréis»; pues todo el pueblo lloraba oyendo las palabras de la Ley.

And Nehemiah -- he the Tirshatha -- saith (and Ezra the priest, the scribe, and the Levites who are instructing the people) to all the people, `To-day is holy to Jehovah your God, do not mourn, nor weep:' for all the people are weeping at their hearing the words of the law.

10 L uego les dijo: «Id, comed alimentos grasos, bebed vino dulce y enviad porciones a los que no tienen nada preparado; porque éste es día consagrado a nuestro Señor. No os entristezcáis, porque el gozo de Jehová es vuestra fuerza.»

And he saith to them, `Go, eat fat things, and drink sweet things, and sent portions to him for whom nothing is prepared, for to-day holy to our Lord, and be not grieved, for the joy of Jehovah is your strength.'

11 T ambién los levitas calmaban a todo el pueblo, diciendo: «Callad, porque es día santo; no os entristezcáis.»

And the Levites are keeping all the people silent, saying, `Be silent, for to-day holy, and be not grieved.'

12 Y todo el pueblo se fue a comer y a beber, a obsequiar porciones y a gozar de gran alegría, porque habían entendido las palabras que les habían enseñado.

And all the people go to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great joy, because they have understood concerning the words that they made known to them.

13 A l día siguiente, se reunieron los cabezas de familia de todo el pueblo, sacerdotes y levitas, junto al escriba Esdras, para estudiar las palabras de la Ley.

And on the second day have been gathered heads of the fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, unto Ezra the scribe, even to act wisely concerning the words of the law.

14 Y hallaron escrito en la ley que Jehová había mandado por medio de Moisés, que habitaran los hijos de Israel en tabernáculos en la fiesta solemne del mes séptimo;

And they find written in the law that Jehovah commanded by the hand of Moses, that the sons of Israel dwell in booths in the feast, in the seventh month,

15 y que hicieran saber e hicieran pregonar por todas sus ciudades y por Jerusalén, diciendo: «Salid al monte y traed ramas de olivo, de olivo silvestre, de arrayán, de palmeras y de todo árbol frondoso, para hacer tabernáculos, como está escrito.»

and that they proclaim and cause to pass over all their cities, (and in Jerusalem,) saying, `Go ye out to the mount, and bring leaves of the olive, and leaves of the oil tree, and leaves of the myrtle, and leaves of the palms, and leaves of thick trees, to make booths as it is written.'

16 S alió, pues, el pueblo, y trajeron ramas e hicieron tabernáculos, cada uno sobre su terrado, en sus patios, en los patios de la casa de Dios, en la plaza de la puerta de las Aguas y en la plaza de la puerta de Efraín.

And the people go out, and bring in, and make for themselves booths, each on his roof, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the broad place of the water-gate, and in the broad place of the gate of Ephraim.

17 T oda la congregación que volvió de la cautividad hizo tabernáculos, y en tabernáculos habitó; porque desde los días de Josué hijo de Nun hasta aquel día, no habían hecho así los hijos de Israel. Y hubo gran alegría.

And they make -- all the assembly of the captives of the captivity -- booths, and they sit in booths; for the sons of Israel had not done, from the days of Jeshua son of Nun, so unto that day, and there is very great joy.

18 L eyó Esdras el libro de la ley de Dios cada día, desde el primer día hasta el último; hicieron la fiesta solemne por siete días, y el octavo día fue de solemne asamblea, según el rito.

And he readeth in the book of the law of God day by day, from the first day till the last day, and they make a feast seven days, and on the eighth day a restraint, according to the ordinance.
