1 F iindcă mulţi s'au apucat să alcătuiască o istorisire amănunţită despre lucrurile cari s'au petrecut printre noi,

Seeing that many did take in hand to set in order a narration of the matters that have been fully assured among us,

2 d upă cum ni le-au încredinţat ceice le-au văzut cu ochii lor dela început, şi au ajuns slujitori ai cuvîntului,

as they did deliver to us, who from the beginning became eye-witnesses, and officers of the Word, --

3 a m găsit şi eu cu cale, prea alesule Teofile, după ce am făcut cercetări cu deamăruntul asupra tuturor acestor lucruri dela obîrşia lor, să ţi le scriu în şir unele după altele,

it seemed good also to me, having followed from the first after all things exactly, to write to thee in order, most noble Theophilus,

4 c a să poţi cunoaşte astfel temeinicia învăţăturilor, pe cari le-ai primit prin viu grai.

that thou mayest know the certainty of the things wherein thou wast instructed.

5 Î n zilele lui Irod, împăratul Iudeii, era un preot, numit Zaharia, din ceata lui Abia. Nevasta lui era din fetele lui Aaron, şi se chema Elisaveta.

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest, by name Zacharias, of the course of Abijah, and his wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elisabeth;

6 A mîndoi erau neprihăniţi înaintea lui Dumnezeu, şi păzeau fără pată toate poruncile şi toate rînduielile Domnului.

and they were both righteous before God, going on in all the commands and righteousnesses of the Lord blameless,

7 N 'aveau copii, pentrucă Elisaveta era stearpă; şi amîndoi erau înaintaţi în vîrstă.

and they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and both were advanced in their days.

8 D ar, pe cînd slujea Zaharia înaintea lui Dumnezeu, la rîndul cetei lui,

And it came to pass, in his acting as priest, in the order of his course before God,

9 d upă obiceiul preoţiei, a ieşit la sorţi să intre să tămîieze în Templul Domnului.

according to the custom of the priesthood, his lot was to make perfume, having gone into the sanctuary of the Lord,

10 Î n ceasul tămîierii, toată mulţimea norodului se ruga afară.

and all the multitude of the people were praying without, at the hour of the perfume.

11 A tunci un înger al Domnului s'a arătat lui Zaharia, şi a stătut în picioare la dreapta altarului pentru tămîiere.

And there appeared to him a messenger of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of the perfume,

12 Z aharia s'a spăimîntat, cînd l -a văzut; şi l -a apucat frica.

and Zacharias, having seen, was troubled, and fear fell on him;

13 D ar îngerul i -a zis:,, Nu te teme Zahario; fiindcă rugăciunea ta a fost ascultată. Nevastă-ta Elisaveta îţi va naşte un fiu, căruia îi vei pune numele Ioan.

and the messenger said unto him, `Fear not, Zacharias, for thy supplication was heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear a son to thee, and thou shalt call his name John,

14 E l va fi pentru tine o pricină de bucurie şi veselie, şi mulţi se vor bucura de naşterea lui.

and there shall be joy to thee, and gladness, and many at his birth shall joy,

15 C ăci va fi mare înaintea Domnului. Nu va bea nici vin, nici băutură ameţitoare, şi se va umplea de Duhul Sfînt încă din pîntecele maicii sale.

for he shall be great before the Lord, and wine and strong drink he may not drink, and of the Holy Spirit he shall be full, even from his mother's womb;

16 E l va întoarce pe mulţi din fiii lui Israel la Domnul, Dumnezeul lor.

and many of the sons of Israel he shall turn to the Lord their God,

17 V a merge înaintea lui Dumnezeu, în duhul şi puterea lui Ilie, ca să întoarcă inimile părinţilor la copii, şi pe cei neascultători la umblarea în înţelepciunea celor neprihăniţi, ca să gătească Domnului un norod bine pregătit pentru El.``

and he shall go before Him, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn hearts of fathers unto children, and disobedient ones to the wisdom of righteous ones, to make ready for the Lord, a people prepared.'

18 Z aharia a zis îngerului:,, Din ce voi cunoaşte lucrul acesta? Fiindcă eu sînt bătrîn, şi nevastă-mea este înaintată în vîrstă.``

And Zacharias said unto the messenger, `Whereby shall I know this? for I am aged, and my wife is advanced in her days?'

19 D rept răspuns, îngerul i -a zis:,, Eu sînt Gavril, care stau înaintea lui Dumnezeu; am fost trimes să-ţi vorbesc, şi să-ţi aduc această veste bună.

And the messenger answering said to him, `I am Gabriel, who have been standing near before God, and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to proclaim these good news to thee,

20 I ată că vei fi mut, şi nu vei putea vorbi, pînă în ziua cînd se vor întîmpla aceste lucruri, pentrucă n'ai crezut cuvintele mele, cari se vor împlini la vremea lor.``

and lo, thou shalt be silent, and not able to speak, till the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou didst not believe my words, that shall be fulfilled in their season.'

21 N orodul însă aştepta pe Zaharia, şi se mira de zăbovirea lui în Templu.

And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and wondering at his tarrying in the sanctuary,

22 C înd a ieşit afară, nu putea să le vorbească; şi au înţeles că avusese o vedenie în Templu. El le făcea semne într'una, şi a rămas mut.

and having come out, he was not able to speak to them, and they perceived that a vision he had seen in the sanctuary, and he was beckoning to them, and did remain dumb.

23 D upă ce i s'au împlinit zilele de slujbă, Zaharia s'a dus acasă.

And it came to pass, when the days of his service were fulfilled, he went away to his house,

24 P este cîtva timp, Elisaveta, nevasta lui, a rămas însărcinată, şi s'a ţinut ascunsă de tot cinci luni.,, Căci``, zicea ea,

and after those days, his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying --

25 i ată ce mi -a făcut Domnul, cînd Şi -a aruncat ochii spre mine, ca să-mi ia ocara dintre oameni.``

`Thus hath the Lord done to me, in days in which He looked upon, to take away my reproach among men.'

26 Î n luna a şasea, îngerul Gavril a fost trimes de Dumnezeu într'o cetate din Galilea, numită Nazaret,

And in the sixth month was the messenger Gabriel sent by God, to a city of Galilee, the name of which Nazareth,

27 l a o fecioară logodită cu un bărbat, numit Iosif, din casa lui David. Numele fecioarei era Maria.

to a virgin, betrothed to a man, whose name Joseph, of the house of David, and the name of the virgin Mary.

28 Î ngerul a intrat la ea, şi a zis:,, Plecăciune, ţie, căreia ţi s'a făcut mare har; Domnul este cu tine, binecuvîntată eşti tu între femei!``

And the messenger having come in unto her, said, `Hail, favoured one, the Lord with thee; blessed thou among women;'

29 T urburată foarte mult de cuvintele acestea, Maria se întreba singură ce putea să însemneze urarea aceasta.

and she, having seen, was troubled at his word, and was reasoning of what kind this salutation may be.

30 Î ngerul i -a zis:,, Nu te teme, Marie; căci ai căpătat îndurare înaintea lui Dumnezeu.

And the messenger said to her, `Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God;

31 Ş i iată că vei rămînea însărcinată, şi vei naşte un fiu, căruia îi vei pune numele Isus.

and lo, thou shalt conceive in the womb, and shalt bring forth a son, and call his name Jesus;

32 E l va fi mare, şi va fi chemat Fiul Celui Prea Înalt; şi Domnul Dumnezeu îi va da scaunul de domnie al tatălui Său David.

he shall be great, and Son of the Highest he shall be called, and the Lord God shall give him the throne of David his father,

33 V a împărăţi peste casa lui Iacov în veci, şi Împărăţia Lui nu va avea sfîrşit.``

and he shall reign over the house of Jacob to the ages; and of his reign there shall be no end.'

34 M aria a zis îngerului:,, Cum se va face lucrul acesta, fiindcă eu nu ştiu de bărbat?``

And Mary said unto the messenger, `How shall this be, seeing a husband I do not know?'

35 Î ngerul i -a răspuns:,, Duhul Sfînt Se va pogorî peste tine, şi puterea Celui Prea Înalt te va umbri. De aceea Sfîntul care Se va naşte din tine, va fi chemat Fiul lui Dumnezeu.

And the messenger answering said to her, `The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee, therefore also the holy-begotten thing shall be called Son of God;

36 I ată că Elisaveta, rudenia ta, a zămislit, şi ea, un fiu la bătrîneţe; şi ea, căreia i se zicea stearpă, este acum în a şasea lună.

and lo, Elisabeth, thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month to her who was called barren;

37 C ăci niciun cuvînt dela Dumnezeu nu este lipsit de putere.

because nothing shall be impossible with God.'

38 M aria a zis:,, Iată, roaba Domnului; facă-mi-se după cuvintele tale!`` Şi îngerul a plecat dela ea.

And Mary said, `Lo, the maid-servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to thy saying,' and the messenger went away from her.

39 M aria s'a sculat chiar în zilele acelea, şi a plecat în grabă spre munţi, într'o cetate a lui Iuda.

And Mary having arisen in those days, went to the hill-country, with haste, to a city of Judea,

40 A intrat în casa lui Zaharia, şi a urat de bine Elisavetei.

and entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

41 C um a auzit Elisaveta urarea Mariei, i -a săltat pruncul în pîntece, şi Elisaveta s'a umplut de Duhul Sfînt.

And it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe did leap in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,

42 E a a strigat cu glas tare:,, Binecuvîntată eşti tu între femei, şi binecuvîntat este rodul pîntecelui tău.

and spake out with a loud voice, and said, `Blessed thou among women, and blessed the fruit of thy womb;

43 C um mi -a fost dat mie să vină la mine maica Domnului meu?

and whence this to me, that the mother of my Lord might come unto me?

44 F iindcă iată, cum mi -a ajuns la urechi glasul urării tale, mi -a săltat pruncul în pîntece de bucurie.

for, lo, when the voice of thy salutation came to my ears, leap in gladness did the babe in my womb;

45 F erice de aceea care a crezut; pentrucă lucrurile, cari i-au fost spuse din partea Domnului, se vor împlini.``

and happy she who did believe, for there shall be a completion to the things spoken to her from the Lord.'

46 Ş i Maria a zis:,, Sufletul meu măreşte pe Domnul,

And Mary said, `My soul doth magnify the Lord,

47 ş i mi se bucură duhul în Dumnezeu, Mîntuitorul meu,

And my spirit was glad on God my Saviour,

48 p entrucă a privit spre starea smerită a roabei Sale. Căci iată că deacum încolo, toate neamurile îmi vor zice fericită,

Because He looked on the lowliness of His maid-servant, For, lo, henceforth call me happy shall all the generations,

49 p entrucă Cel Atot Puternic a făcut lucruri mari pentru mine. Numele Lui este sfînt,

For He who is mighty did to me great things, And holy His name,

50 ş i îndurarea Lui se întinde din neam în neam peste cei ce se tem de El.

And His kindness to generations of generations, To those fearing Him,

51 E l a arătat putere cu braţul Lui; a risipit gîndurile, pe cari le aveau cei mîndri în inima lor.

He did powerfully with His arm, He scattered abroad the proud in the thought of their heart,

52 A răsturnat pe cei puternici de pe scaunele lor de domnie, şi a înălţat pe cei smeriţi.

He brought down the mighty from thrones, And He exalted the lowly,

53 P e cei flămînzi i -a săturat de bunătăţi, şi pe cei bogaţi i -a scos afară cu mînile goale.

The hungry He did fill with good, And the rich He sent away empty,

54 A venit în ajutorul robului său Israel, căci Şi -a adus aminte de îndurarea Sa, -

He received again Israel His servant, To remember kindness,

55 c um făgăduise părinţilor noştri, -faţă de Avraam şi sămînţa lui în veac.``

As He spake unto our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed -- to the age.'

56 M aria a rămas împreună cu Elisaveta cam trei luni. Apoi s'a întors acasă.

And Mary remained with her about three months, and turned back to her house.

57 E lisavetei i s'a împlinit vremea să nască; şi a născut un fiu.

And to Elisabeth was the time fulfilled for her bringing forth, and she bare a son,

58 V ecinii şi rudele ei au auzit că Domnul a arătat mare îndurare faţă de ea, şi se bucurau împreună cu ea.

and the neighbours and her kindred heard that the Lord was making His kindness great with her, and they were rejoicing with her.

59 Î n ziua a opta, au venit să taie pruncul împrejur, şi voiau să -i pună numele Zaharia, după numele tatălui său.

And it came to pass, on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child, and they were calling him by the name of his father, Zacharias,

60 D ar mama lui a luat cuvîntul, şi a zis:,, Nu. Ci are să se cheme Ioan.``

and his mother answering said, `No, but he shall be called John.'

61 E i i-au zis:,, Nimeni din rubedeniile tale nu poartă numele acesta.``

And they said unto her -- `There is none among thy kindred who is called by this name,'

62 Ş i au început să facă semne tatălui său, ca să ştie cum ar vrea să -i pună numele.

and they were making signs to his father, what he would wish him to be called,

63 Z aharia a cerut o tăbliţă de scris, şi a scris, zicînd:,, Numele lui este Ioan.`` Şi toţi s'au minunat.

and having asked for a tablet, he wrote, saying, `John is his name;' and they did all wonder;

64 Î n clipa aceea, i s'a deschis gura, i s'a deslegat limba, şi el vorbea şi binecuvînta pe Dumnezeu.

and his mouth was opened presently, and his tongue, and he was speaking, praising God.

65 P e toţi vecinii i -a apucat frica, şi în tot ţinutul acela muntos al Iudeii, se vorbea despre toate aceste lucruri.

And fear came upon all those dwelling around them, and in all the hill-country of Judea were all these sayings spoken of,

66 T oţi ceice le auzeau, le păstrau în inima lor, şi ziceau:,, Oare ce va fi pruncul acesta?`` Şi mîna Domnului era într'adevăr cu el.

and all who heard did lay them up in their hearts, saying, `What then shall this child be?' and the hand of the Lord was with him.

67 Z aharia, tatăl lui, s'a umplut de Duhul Sfînt, a proorocit, şi a zis:

And Zacharias his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and did prophesy, saying,

68 B inecuvîntat este Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, pentrucă a cercetat şi a răscumpărat pe poporul Său.

`Blessed the Lord, the God of Israel, Because He did look upon, And wrought redemption for His people,

69 Ş i ne -a ridicat o mîntuire puternică (Greceşte: un corn de mîntuire.) în casa robului Său David,

And did raise an horn of salvation to us, In the house of David His servant,

70 c um vestise prin gura sfinţilor Săi prooroci, cari au fost din vechime; -

As He spake by the mouth of His holy prophets, Which have been from the age;

71 m întuire de vrăjmaşii noştri şi din mîna tuturor celor ce ne urăsc!

Salvation from our enemies, And out of the hand of all hating us,

72 A stfel Îşi arată El îndurarea faţă de părinţii noştri, şi Îşi aduce aminte de legămîntul Lui cel sfînt,

To do kindness with our fathers, And to be mindful of His holy covenant,

73 p otrivit jurămîntului prin care Se jurase părintelui nostru Avraam,

An oath that He sware to Abraham our father,

74 c ă, dupăce ne va izbăvi din mîna vrăjmaşilor noştri, ne va îngădui să -I slujim fără frică,

To give to us, without fear, Out of the hand of our enemies having been delivered,

75 t răind înaintea Lui în sfinţenie şi neprihănire, în toate zilele vieţii noastre.

To serve Him, in holiness and righteousness Before Him, all the days of our life.

76 Ş i tu, pruncule, vei fi chemat prooroc al Celui Prea Înalt. Căci vei merge înaintea Domnului, ca să pregăteşti căile Lui,

And thou, child, Prophet of the Highest Shalt thou be called; For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord, To prepare His ways.

77 ş i să dai poporului Său cunoştinţa mîntuirii, care stă în iertarea păcatelor lui; -

To give knowledge of salvation to His people In remission of their sins,

78 d atorită marei îndurări a Dumnezeului nostru, în urma căreia ne -a cercetat Soarele care răsare din înălţime,

Through the tender mercies of our God, In which the rising from on high did look upon us,

79 c a să lumineze pe ceice zac în întunerecul şi în umbra morţii, şi să ne îndrepte picioarele pe calea păcii!``

To give light to those sitting in darkness and death-shade, To guide our feet to a way of peace.'

80 I ar pruncul creştea şi se întărea în duh. Şi a stat în locuri pustii pînă în ziua arătării lui înaintea lui Israel.

And the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit, and he was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
