1 D upă aceste întîmplări, Cuvîntul Domnului a vorbit lui Avram într'o vedenie, şi a zis:,, Avrame, nu te teme; Eu sînt scutul tău, şi răsplata ta cea foarte mare.``

After these things hath the word of Jehovah been unto Abram in a vision, saying, `Fear not, Abram, I a shield to thee, thy reward exceeding great.'

2 A vram a răspuns:,, Doamne Dumnezeule, ce-mi vei da? Căci mor fără copii; şi moştenitorul casei mele este Eliezer din Damasc.``

And Abram saith, `Lord Jehovah, what dost Thou give to me, and I am going childless? and an acquired son in my house is Demmesek Eliezer.'

3 Ş i Avram a zis:,, Iată că nu mi-ai dat sămînţă, şi slujitorul născut în casa mea va fi moştenitorul meu.``

And Abram saith, `Lo, to me Thou hast not given seed, and lo, a domestic doth heir me.'

4 A tunci Cuvîntul Domnului i -a vorbit astfel:,, Nu el va fi moştenitorul tău, ci cel ce va ieşi din tine, acela va fi moştenitorul tău.``

And lo, the word of Jehovah unto him, saying, `This doth not heir thee; but he who cometh out from thy bowels, he doth heir thee;'

5 Ş i, după ce l -a dus afară, i -a zis:,, Uită-te spre cer, şi numără stelele, dacă poţi să le numeri.`` Şi i -a zis:,, Aşa va fi sămînţa ta.``

and He bringeth him out without, and saith, `Look attentively, I pray thee, towards the heavens, and count the stars, if thou art able to count them;' and He saith to him, `Thus is thy seed.'

6 A vram a crezut pe Domnul, şi Domnul i -a socotit lucrul acesta ca neprihănire.

And he hath believed in Jehovah, and He reckoneth it to him -- righteousness.

7 D omnul i -a mai zis:,, Eu sînt Domnul, care te-am scos din Ur din Haldea, ca să-ţi dau în stăpînire ţara aceasta.``

And He saith unto him, `I Jehovah who brought thee out from Ur of the Chaldees, to give to thee this land to possess it;'

8 A vram a răspuns:,, Doamne Dumnezeule, prin ce voi cunoaşte că o voi stăpîni?``

and he saith, `Lord Jehovah, whereby do I know that I possess it?'

9 Ş i Domnul i -a zis:,, Ia o juncană de trei ani, o capră de trei ani, un berbec de trei ani, o turturea şi un pui de porumbel.``

And He saith unto him, `Take for Me a heifer of three years, and a she-goat of three years, and a ram of three years, and a turtle-dove, and a young bird;'

10 A vram a luat toate dobitoacele acestea, le -a despicat în două, şi a pus fiecare bucată una în faţa alteia; dar pasările nu le -a despicat.

and he taketh to him all these, and separateth them in the midst, and putteth each piece over against its fellow, but the bird he hath not divided;

11 P ăsările răpitoare s'au năpustit peste stîrvuri; dar Avram le -a izgonit.

and the ravenous birds come down upon the carcases, and Abram causeth them to turn back.

12 L a apusul soarelui, un somn adînc a căzut peste Avram; şi iată că l -a apucat o groază şi un mare întunerec.

And the sun is about to go in, and deep sleep hath fallen upon Abram, and lo, a terror of great darkness is falling upon him;

13 Ş i Domnul a zis lui Avram:,, Să ştii hotărît că sămînţa ta va fi străină într'o ţară, care nu va fi a ei; acolo va fi robită, şi o vor apăsa greu, timp de patru sute de ani.

and He saith to Abram, `knowing -- know that thy seed is a sojourner in a land not theirs, and they have served them, and they have afflicted them four hundred years,

14 D ar pe neamul căruia îi va fi roabă, îl voi judeca Eu: şi pe urmă va ieşi deacolo cu mari bogăţii.

and the nation also whom they serve I judge, and after this they go out with great substance;

15 T u vei merge în pace la părinţii tăi; vei fi îngropat după o bătrîneţă fericită.

and thou -- thou comest in unto thy fathers in peace; thou art buried in a good old age;

16 Î n al patrulea neam, ea se va întoarce aici; căci nelegiuirea Amoriţilor nu şi -a atins încă vîrful.``

and the fourth generation doth turn back hither, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete.'

17 D upă ce a asfinţit soarele, s'a făcut un întunerec adînc; şi iată că a ieşit un fum ca dintr'un cuptor, şi nişte flăcări au trecut printre dobitoacele despicate.

And it cometh to pass -- the sun hath gone in, and thick darkness hath been -- and lo, a furnace of smoke, and a lamp of fire, which hath passed over between those pieces.

18 Î n ziua aceea, Domnul a făcut un legămînt cu Avram, şi i -a zis:,, Seminţei tale dau ţara aceasta, dela rîul Egiptului pînă la rîul cel mare, rîul Eufrat,

In that day hath Jehovah made with Abram a covenant, saying, `To thy seed I have given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Phrat,

19 ş i anume; ţara Cheniţilor, a Cheniziţilor, a Cadmoniţilor,

with the Kenite, and the Kenizzite, and the Kadmonite,

20 a Hetiţilor, a Fereziţilor, a Refaimiţilor,

and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Rephaim,

21 a Amoriţilor, a Cananiţilor, a Ghirgasiţilor şi a Iebusiţilor.``

and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Girgashite, and the Jebusite.'
