1 H ỡi Thê-ô-phi-lơ quí nhơn, vì có nhiều kẻ dốc lòng chép sử về những sự đã làm nên trong chúng ta,

Seeing that many did take in hand to set in order a narration of the matters that have been fully assured among us,

2 t heo như các người chứng kiến từ lúc ban đầu và trở nên người giảng đạo đã truyền lại cho chúng ta,

as they did deliver to us, who from the beginning became eye-witnesses, and officers of the Word, --

3 v ậy, sau khi đã xét kỹ càng từ đầu mọi sự ấy, tôi cũng tưởng nên theo thứ tự viết mà tỏ ra cho ông,

it seemed good also to me, having followed from the first after all things exactly, to write to thee in order, most noble Theophilus,

4 đ ể ông biết những điều mình đã học là chắc chắn.

that thou mayest know the certainty of the things wherein thou wast instructed.

5 T rong đời Hê-rốt, vua nước Giu-đê, có một thầy tế lễ, về ban A-bi -a, tên là Xa-cha-ri; vợ người là Ê-li-sa-bét, thuộc về chi phái A-rôn.

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest, by name Zacharias, of the course of Abijah, and his wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elisabeth;

6 C ả hai đều là công bình trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời, vâng giữ mọi điều răn và lễ nghi của Chúa một cách không chỗ trách được.

and they were both righteous before God, going on in all the commands and righteousnesses of the Lord blameless,

7 H ai người không có con, vì Ê-li-sa-bét son sẻ, và cả hai đều cao tuổi.

and they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and both were advanced in their days.

8 V ả, Xa-cha-ri cứ theo thứ tự trong ban mình mà làm chức tế lễ trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời.

And it came to pass, in his acting as priest, in the order of his course before God,

9 K hi đã bắt thăm theo lệ các thầy cả lập ra rồi, thì người được gọi vào nơi thánh của Chúa để dâng hương.

according to the custom of the priesthood, his lot was to make perfume, having gone into the sanctuary of the Lord,

10 Đ ương giờ dâng hương, cả đoàn dân đông đều ở ngoài cầu nguyện.

and all the multitude of the people were praying without, at the hour of the perfume.

11 B ấy giờ có một thiên sứ của Chúa hiện ra cùng Xa-cha-ri, đứng bên hữu bàn thờ xông hương.

And there appeared to him a messenger of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of the perfume,

12 X a-cha-ri thấy thì bối rối sợ hãi.

and Zacharias, having seen, was troubled, and fear fell on him;

13 N hưng thiên sứ nói cùng người rằng: Hỡi Xa-cha-ri, đừng sợ, vì lời cầu nguyện ngươi đã được nhậm rồi. Ê-li-sa-bét vợ ngươi, sẽ sanh một con trai, ngươi khá đặt tên là Giăng.

and the messenger said unto him, `Fear not, Zacharias, for thy supplication was heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear a son to thee, and thou shalt call his name John,

14 C on trai đó sẽ làm cho ngươi vui mừng hớn hở, và nhiều kẻ sẽ mừng rỡ về sự sanh người ra.

and there shall be joy to thee, and gladness, and many at his birth shall joy,

15 V ì người sẽ nên tôn trọng trước mặt Chúa; không uống rượu hay là giống gì làm cho say, và sẽ được đầy dẫy Đức Thánh Linh từ khi còn trong lòng mẹ.

for he shall be great before the Lord, and wine and strong drink he may not drink, and of the Holy Spirit he shall be full, even from his mother's womb;

16 N gười sẽ làm cho nhiều con trai Y-sơ-ra-ên trở lại cùng Chúa, là Đức Chúa Trời của họ;

and many of the sons of Israel he shall turn to the Lord their God,

17 c hính người lại sẽ lấy tâm thần quyền phép Ê-li mà đi trước mặt Chúa, để đem lòng cha trở về con cái, kẻ loạn nghịch đến sự khôn ngoan của người công bình, đặng sửa soạn cho Chúa một dân sẵn lòng.

and he shall go before Him, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn hearts of fathers unto children, and disobedient ones to the wisdom of righteous ones, to make ready for the Lord, a people prepared.'

18 X a-cha-ri thưa rằng: Bởi sao tôi biết được điều đó? Vì tôi đã già, vợ tôi đã cao tuổi rồi.

And Zacharias said unto the messenger, `Whereby shall I know this? for I am aged, and my wife is advanced in her days?'

19 T hiên sứ trả lời rằng: Ta là Gáp-ri-ên, đứng rồi mặt Đức Chúa Trời; Ngài đã sai ta đến truyền cho ngươi và báo tin mừng nầy.

And the messenger answering said to him, `I am Gabriel, who have been standing near before God, and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to proclaim these good news to thee,

20 N ầy, ngươi sẽ câm, không nói được cho đến ngày nào các điều ấy xảy ra, vì ngươi không tin lời ta, là lời đến kỳ sẽ ứng nghiệm.

and lo, thou shalt be silent, and not able to speak, till the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou didst not believe my words, that shall be fulfilled in their season.'

21 B ấy giờ, dân chúng đợi Xa-cha-ri, và lấy làm lạ, vì người ở lâu trong nơi thánh.

And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and wondering at his tarrying in the sanctuary,

22 K hi Xa-cha-ri ra, không nói với chúng được, thì họ mới hiểu rằng người đã thấy sự hiện thấy gì trong đền thánh; người ra dấu cho họ, mà vẫn còn câm.

and having come out, he was not able to speak to them, and they perceived that a vision he had seen in the sanctuary, and he was beckoning to them, and did remain dumb.

23 K hi những ngày về phần việc mình đã trọn, người trở về nhà.

And it came to pass, when the days of his service were fulfilled, he went away to his house,

24 K hỏi ít lâu, vợ người là Ê-li-sa-bét chịu thai, ẩn mình đi trong năm tháng, mà nói rằng:

and after those days, his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying --

25 A áy là ơn Chúa đã làm cho tôi, khi Ngài đã đoái đến tôi, để cất sự xấu hổ tôi giữa mọi người.

`Thus hath the Lord done to me, in days in which He looked upon, to take away my reproach among men.'

26 Đ ến tháng thứ sáu, Đức Chúa Trời sai thiên sứ Gáp-ri-ên đến thành Na-xa-rét, xứ Ga-li-lê,

And in the sixth month was the messenger Gabriel sent by God, to a city of Galilee, the name of which Nazareth,

27 t ới cùng một người nữ đồng trinh tên là Ma-ri, đã hứa gả cho một người nam tên là Giô-sép, về dòng vua Đa-vít.

to a virgin, betrothed to a man, whose name Joseph, of the house of David, and the name of the virgin Mary.

28 T hiên sứ vào chỗ người nữ ở, nói rằng: Hỡi người được ơn, mừng cho ngươi; Chúa ở cùng ngươi.

And the messenger having come in unto her, said, `Hail, favoured one, the Lord with thee; blessed thou among women;'

29 M a-ri nghe nói thì bối rối, tự hỏi rằng lời chào ấy có nghĩa gì.

and she, having seen, was troubled at his word, and was reasoning of what kind this salutation may be.

30 T hiên-sứ bèn nói rằng: Hỡi Ma-ri, đừng sợ, vì ngươi đã được ơn trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời.

And the messenger said to her, `Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God;

31 N ầy, ngươi sẽ chịu thai và sanh một con trai mà đặt tên là Jêsus.

and lo, thou shalt conceive in the womb, and shalt bring forth a son, and call his name Jesus;

32 C on trai ấy sẽ nên tôn trọng, được xưng là Con của Đấng Rất Cao; và Chúa, là Đức Chúa Trời, sẽ ban cho Ngài ngôi Đa-vít là tổ phụ Ngài.

he shall be great, and Son of the Highest he shall be called, and the Lord God shall give him the throne of David his father,

33 N gài sẽ trị vì đời đời nhà Gia-cốp, nước Ngài vô cùng.

and he shall reign over the house of Jacob to the ages; and of his reign there shall be no end.'

34 M a-ri bèn thưa rằng: Tôi chẳng hề nhận biết người nam nào, thì làm sao có được sự đó?

And Mary said unto the messenger, `How shall this be, seeing a husband I do not know?'

35 T hiên sứ truyền rằng: Đức Thánh Linh sẽ đến trên ngươi, và quyền phép Đấng Rất Cao sẽ che phủ ngươi dưới bóng mình, cho nên con thánh sanh ra, phải xưng là Con Đức Chúa Trời.

And the messenger answering said to her, `The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee, therefore also the holy-begotten thing shall be called Son of God;

36 K ìa, Ê-li-sa-bét, bà con ngươi, cũng đã chịu thai một trai trong lúc già nua; người ấy vốn có tiếng là son, mà nay cưu mang được sáu tháng rồi.

and lo, Elisabeth, thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month to her who was called barren;

37 B ởi vì không việc chi Đức Chúa Trời chẳng làm được.

because nothing shall be impossible with God.'

38 M a-ri thưa rằng: Tôi đây là tôi tớ Chúa; xin sự ấy xảy ra cho tôi như lời người truyền! Đoạn thiên sứ kìa khỏi Ma-ri.

And Mary said, `Lo, the maid-servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to thy saying,' and the messenger went away from her.

39 T rong những ngày đó, Ma-ri chờ dậy, lật đật đi trong miền núi, đến một thành về xứ Giu-đa,

And Mary having arisen in those days, went to the hill-country, with haste, to a city of Judea,

40 v ào nhà Xa-cha-ri mà chào Ê-li-sa-bét.

and entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

41 V ả, Ê-li-sa-bét vừa nghe tiếng Ma-ri chào, con nhỏ trong lòng liền nhảy nhót; và Ê-li-sa-bét được đầy Đức Thánh Linh,

And it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe did leap in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,

42 b èn cất tiếng kêu rằng: Ngươi có phải trong đám đờn bà, thai trong lòng ngươi cũng được phước.

and spake out with a loud voice, and said, `Blessed thou among women, and blessed the fruit of thy womb;

43 N hơn đâu ta được sự vẻ vang nầy, là mẹ Chúa ta đến thăm ta?

and whence this to me, that the mother of my Lord might come unto me?

44 B ởi vì tai ta mới nghe tiếng ngươi chào, thì con nhỏ ở trong lòng ta liền nhảy mừng.

for, lo, when the voice of thy salutation came to my ears, leap in gladness did the babe in my womb;

45 P hước cho người đã tin, vì lời Chúa truyền cho sẽ được ứng nghiệm!

and happy she who did believe, for there shall be a completion to the things spoken to her from the Lord.'

46 M a-ri bèn nói rằng: Linh hồn tôi ngợi khen Chúa,

And Mary said, `My soul doth magnify the Lord,

47 T âm thần tôi mừng rỡ trong Đức Chúa Trời, là Cứu Chúa tôi.

And my spirit was glad on God my Saviour,

48 V ì Ngài đã đoái đến sự hèn hạ của tôi tớ Ngài. Nầy, từ rày về sau, muôn đời sẽ khen tôi là có phước;

Because He looked on the lowliness of His maid-servant, For, lo, henceforth call me happy shall all the generations,

49 B ởi Đấng Toàn Năng đã làm các việc lớn cho tôi. Danh Ngài là thánh,

For He who is mighty did to me great things, And holy His name,

50 V à Ngài thương xót kẻ kính sợ Ngài từ đời nầy sang đời kia.

And His kindness to generations of generations, To those fearing Him,

51 N gài đã dùng cánh tay mình để tỏ ra quyền phép; Và phá tan mưu của kẻ kiêu ngạo toan trong lòng.

He did powerfully with His arm, He scattered abroad the proud in the thought of their heart,

52 N gài đã cách người có quyền khỏi ngôi họ, Và nhắc kẻ khiêm nhượng lên.

He brought down the mighty from thrones, And He exalted the lowly,

53 N gài đã làm cho kẻ đói được đầy thức ăn ngon, Và đuổi kẻ giàu về tay không.

The hungry He did fill with good, And the rich He sent away empty,

54 N gài đã vùa giúp Y-sơ-ra-ên, tôi tớ Ngài, Và nhớ lại sự thương xót mình. Đối với A

He received again Israel His servant, To remember kindness,

55 N hư Ngài đã phán cùng tổ phụ chúng ta vậy.

As He spake unto our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed -- to the age.'

56 M a-ri với Ê-li-sa-bét chừng ba tháng, rồi trở về nhà mình.

And Mary remained with her about three months, and turned back to her house.

57 B ấy giờ, đến ngày mãn nguyệt, Ê-li-sa-bét sanh được một trai.

And to Elisabeth was the time fulfilled for her bringing forth, and she bare a son,

58 X óm riềng bà con nghe Chúa tỏ ra sự thương xót cả thể cho Ê-li-sa-bét, thì chia vui cùng người.

and the neighbours and her kindred heard that the Lord was making His kindness great with her, and they were rejoicing with her.

59 Q ua ngày thứ tám, họ đều đến để làm lễ cắt bì cho con trẻ; và đặt tên là Xa-cha-ri theo tên của cha.

And it came to pass, on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child, and they were calling him by the name of his father, Zacharias,

60 N hưng mẹ nói rằng: Không! phải đặt tên con là Giăng.

and his mother answering said, `No, but he shall be called John.'

61 H ọ nói: Trong bà con ngươi không ai có tên đó.

And they said unto her -- `There is none among thy kindred who is called by this name,'

62 H ọ bèn ra dấu hỏi cha muốn đặt tên gì cho con.

and they were making signs to his father, what he would wish him to be called,

63 X a-cha-ri biểu lấy bảng nhỏ, và viết rằng: Giăng là tên nó. Ai nấy đều lấy làm lạ.

and having asked for a tablet, he wrote, saying, `John is his name;' and they did all wonder;

64 T ức thì miệng người mở ra, lưỡi được thong thả, nói và ngợi khen Đức Chúa Trời.

and his mouth was opened presently, and his tongue, and he was speaking, praising God.

65 H ết thảy xóm giềng đều kinh sợ, và người ta nói chuyện với nhau về mọi sự ấy khắp miền núi xứ Giu-đê.

And fear came upon all those dwelling around them, and in all the hill-country of Judea were all these sayings spoken of,

66 A i nghe cũng ghi vào lòng mà nói rằng: Aáy vậy, con trẻ đó sẽ ra thể nào? Vì tay Chúa ở cùng con trẻ ấy.

and all who heard did lay them up in their hearts, saying, `What then shall this child be?' and the hand of the Lord was with him.

67 B ấy giờ, Xa-cha-ri, cho con trẻ ấy, được đầy dẫy Đức Thánh Linh, thì nói tiên tri rằng:

And Zacharias his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and did prophesy, saying,

68 N gợi khen Chúa, là Đức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, Vì đã thăm viếng và chuộc dân Ngài,

`Blessed the Lord, the God of Israel, Because He did look upon, And wrought redemption for His people,

69 C ùng sanh ra cho chúng tôi trong nhà Đa-vít, tôi tớ Ngài, Một Đấng Cứu thế có quyền phép!

And did raise an horn of salvation to us, In the house of David His servant,

70 N hư lời Ngài đã dùng miệng các thánh tiên tri phán từ thuở trước,

As He spake by the mouth of His holy prophets, Which have been from the age;

71 N gài cứu chúng tôi khỏi kẻ thù và tay mọi người ghen ghét chúng tôi;

Salvation from our enemies, And out of the hand of all hating us,

72 N gài tỏ lòng thương xót đến tổ tông chúng tôi, Và nhớ lại giao ước thánh của Ngài,

To do kindness with our fathers, And to be mindful of His holy covenant,

73 T heo như Ngài đã thề với A

An oath that He sware to Abraham our father,

74 M à hứa rằng khi chúng tôi đã được cứu khỏi tay kẻ nghịch thù, Ngài sẽ ban ơn lành cho chúng tôi, trước một Ngài,

To give to us, without fear, Out of the hand of our enemies having been delivered,

75 L ấy sự thánh khiết và công bình mà hầu việc Ngài, trọn đời mình không sợ hãi chi hết.

To serve Him, in holiness and righteousness Before Him, all the days of our life.

76 H ỡi con trẻ, người ta sẽ kêu con là tiên tri của Đấng Rất Cao; Con sẽ đi trước mặt Chúa, dọn đường Ngài,

And thou, child, Prophet of the Highest Shalt thou be called; For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord, To prepare His ways.

77 Đ ể cho dân Ngài bởi sự tha tội họ mà biết sự rỗi.

To give knowledge of salvation to His people In remission of their sins,

78 V ì Đức Chúa Trời chúng tôi động lòng thương xót, Và mặt trời mọc lên từ nơi cao thăm viếng chúng tôi,

Through the tender mercies of our God, In which the rising from on high did look upon us,

79 Đ ể soi những kẻ ngồi chỗ tối tăm và trong bóng sự chết, Cùng đưa chơn chúng tôi đi đường bình an.

To give light to those sitting in darkness and death-shade, To guide our feet to a way of peace.'

80 V ả, con trẻ ấy lớn lên, tâm thần mạnh mẽ, ở nơi đồng vắng cho đến ngày tỏ mình ra cùng dân Y-sơ-ra-ên.

And the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit, and he was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
