And the word of Samuel is to all Israel, and Israel goeth out to meet the Philistines for battle, and they encamp by Eben-Ezer, and the Philistines have encamped in Aphek,

2 D ân Phi-li-tin dàn trận đánh Y-sơ-ra-ên; lúc giáp trận, Y-sơ-ra-ên bị dân Phi-li-tin đánh bại và giết tại chiến trường ước bốn ngàn người.

and the Philistines set themselves in array to meet Israel, and the battle spreadeth itself, and Israel is smitten before the Philistines, and they smite among the ranks in the field about four thousand men.

3 K hi dân sự đã trở về trại quân, các trưởng lão Y-sơ-ra-ên nói rằng: Cớ sao ngày nay Đức Giê-hô-va để cho dân Phi-li-tin đánh bại chúng ta? Chúng ta hãy đi thỉnh hòm giao ước của Đức Giê-hô-va ở tại Si-lô; phải đem hòm đó về tại giữa chúng ta, nó ắt sẽ giải cứu chúng ta khỏi tay kẻ cừu địch chúng ta!

And the people cometh in unto the camp, and the elders of Israel say, `Why hath Jehovah smitten us to-day before the Philistines? we take unto us from Shiloh the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and it cometh into our midst, and He doth save us out of the hand of our enemies.'

4 V ậy dân sự bèn sai những sứ giả đến Si-lô, từ đó đem về hòm giao ước của Đức Giê-hô-va vạn quân, là Đấng ngự giữa các Chê-ru-bin. Hai con trai của Hê-li, là Hóp-ni và Phi-nê -a, đều đi theo hòm giao ước của Đức Chúa Trời.

And the people sendeth to Shiloh, and they take up thence the ark of the covenant of Jehovah of Hosts, inhabiting the cherubs, and there two sons of Eli, with the ark of the covenant of God, Hophni and Phinehas.

5 K hi hòm giao ước của Đức Giê-hô-va vào trại quân, cả Y-sơ-ra-ên đều reo tiếng vui mừng lớn, đến đỗi đất phải rúng động.

And it cometh to pass, at the coming in of the ark of the covenant of Jehovah unto the camp, that all Israel shout -- a great shout -- and the earth is moved.

6 K hi dân Phi-li-tin nghe tiếng ấy, bèn hỏi rằng: Tiếng reo mừng lớn trong trại quân Hê-bơ-rơ có nghĩa chi? Thì có người thuật lại cho chúng hay rằng hòm giao ước của Đức Giê-hô-va đã đến trong trại quân.

And the Philistines hear the noise of the shouting, and say, `What the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews?' and they perceive that the ark of Jehovah hath come in unto the camp.

7 D ân Phi-li-tin bèn sợ, vì nói rằng: Đức chúa Trời đã ngự đến trong trại quân. Rồi la rằng: Khốn nạn cho chúng ta thay! Khi trước chẳng hề có xảy ra như vậy!

And the Philistines are afraid, for they said, `God hath come in unto the camp;' and they say, `Wo to us, for there hath not been like this heretofore.

8 K hốn nạn cho chúng ta thay! Ai sẽ giải cứu chúng ta khỏi tay các thần quyền năng dường kia? Aáy là các thần đó đã hành hại dân Ê-díp-tô đủ các thứ tai vạ tại trong đồng vắng.

Wo to us, who doth deliver us out of the hand of these honourable gods? these the gods who are smiting the Egyptians with every plague in the wilderness.

9 H ỡi người Phi-li-tin, hãy mạnh bạo, hãy nên mặt trượng phu! Kẻo các ngươi trở làm tôi mọi dân Hê-bơ-rơ, như họ đã làm tôi mọi các ngươi chăng! Khá nên mặt trượng phu và chiến đấu đi!

Strengthen yourselves, and become men, O Philistines, lest ye do service to Hebrews, as they have done to you -- then ye have become men, and have fought.'

10 V ậy, dân Phi-li-tin chiến đấu, và Y-sơ-ra-ên bị bại, mỗi người chạy trốn về trại mình. Aáy là một sự bại trận lớn lắm; ba vạn lính bộ trong Y-sơ-ra-ên bị ngã chết.

And the Philistines fight, and Israel is smitten, and they flee each to his tents, and the blow is very great, and there fall of Israel thirty thousand footmen;

11 H òm của Đức Chúa Trời bị cướp lấy, còn hai con trai Hê-li, là Hóp-ni và Phi-nê -a, đều chết.

and the ark of God hath been taken, and the two sons of Eli have died, Hophni and Phinehas.

12 M ột người Bên-gia-min chạy trốn khỏi giặc, đến tại Si-lô nội ngày đó, quần áo rách ra, đầu đóng bụi cát.

And a man of Benjamin runneth out of the ranks, and cometh into Shiloh, on that day, and his long robes rent, and earth on his head;

13 K hi người ấy đến, Hê-li đương ngồi trên ghế mình tại bên mé đường, trông đợi cách áy náy; vì lòng Hê-li run sợ về hòm của Đức Chúa trời. Người ấy vào thành báo tin đó, cả thành bèn kêu la lên.

and he cometh in, and lo, Eli is sitting on the throne by the side of the way, watching, for his heart hath been trembling for the ark of God, and the man hath come in to declare in the city, and all the city crieth out.

14 H ê-li nghe tiếng là nầy thì nói: Sự ồn ào nầy là chi? Tức thì người đó lật đật báo tin cho Hê-li.

And Eli heareth the noise of the cry, and saith, `What -- the noise of this tumult!' And the man hasted, and cometh in, and declareth to Eli.

15 V ả, Hê-li đã chín mươi tám tuổi, mắt đui, không thế thấy được.

And Eli is a son of ninety and eight years, and his eyes have stood, and he hath not been able to see.

16 N gười đó nói cùng Hê-li rằng: Tôi là người ở chiến trường đến, ngày nay tôi được thoát khỏi cơn trận. Hê-li hỏi rằng: Hỡi con, đã xảy ra làm sao.

And the man saith unto Eli, `I he who hath come out of the ranks, and I out of the ranks have fled to-day;' and he saith, `What hath been the matter, my son?'

17 S ứ giả tiếp rằng: Y-sơ-ra-ên đã chạy trốn trước mặt dân Phi-li-tin; dân sự bị đại bại. Lại, hai con trai của ông, là Hóp-ni và Phi-nê -a, đã chết, và hòm của Đức Chúa trời đã bị cướp lấy.

And he who is bearing tidings answereth and saith, `Israel hath fled before the Philistines, and also a great slaughter hath been among the people, and also thy two sons have died -- Hophni and Phinehas -- and the ark of God hath been captured.'

18 N gười vừa nói đến hòm của Đức Chúa Trời, thì Hê-li ngã ngửa xuống khỏi ghế mình ở bên phía cửa, gãy cổ và chết, vì người đã già yếu và nặng nề. Người đã làm quan xét cho Y-sơ-ra-ên trong bốn mươi năm.

And it cometh to pass, at his mentioning the ark of God, that he falleth from off the throne backward, by the side of the gate, and his neck is broken, and he dieth, for the man old and heavy, and he hath judged Israel forty years.

19 C on dâu người, là vợ của Phi-nê -a, đương có thai gần đẻ; khi nàng nghe tin về việc cướp lấy hòm của Đức Chúa Trời, cùng hay rằng ông gia và chồng mình đã chết, thì thình lình bị đau đớn, khòm xuống và đẻ.

And his daughter-in-law, wife of Phinehas, pregnant, about to bear, and she heareth the report of the taking of the ark of God, that her father-in-law and her husband have died, and she boweth, and beareth, for her pains have turned upon her.

20 T rong lúc nàng gần chết, các người đàn bà có mặt đó nói rằng: Chớ sợ chi, nàng đã sanh một con trai. Nhưng nàng không đáp lại, chẳng đếm xỉa chi các lời đó.

And at the time of her death, when the women who are standing by her say, `Fear not, for a son thou hast borne,' she hath not answered, nor set her heart;

21 N àng đặt tên cho đứa trẻ là Y-ca-bốt, vì nàng nói rằng: Sự vinh hiển đã lìa khỏi Y-sơ-ra-ên; nàng nói ngụ ý về sự mất hòm của Đức Chúa Trời, về sự chết của ông gia và chồng mình.

and she calleth the youth I-Chabod, saying, `Honour hath removed from Israel,' because of the taking of the ark of God, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

22 N àng lại tiếp: Thật, sự vinh hiển của Y-sơ-ra-ên đã mất rồi, vì hòm của Đức Chúa Trời đã bị cướp lấy.

And she saith, `Honour hath removed from Israel, for the ark of God hath been taken.'
