1 Y llegaba la palabra de Samuel a todo Israel. Y salió Israel para enfrentarse en batalla con los filisteos y acampó junto a Eben-ezer, mientras que los filisteos habían acampado en Afec.

And the word of Samuel is to all Israel, and Israel goeth out to meet the Philistines for battle, and they encamp by Eben-Ezer, and the Philistines have encamped in Aphek,

2 L os filisteos se pusieron en orden de batalla para enfrentarse a Israel. Entablado el combate, Israel fue derrotado delante de los filisteos, quienes mataron como a cuatro mil hombres en el campo de batalla.

and the Philistines set themselves in array to meet Israel, and the battle spreadeth itself, and Israel is smitten before the Philistines, and they smite among the ranks in the field about four thousand men.

3 C uando el pueblo volvió al campamento, los ancianos de Israel dijeron: ¿Por qué nos ha derrotado hoy el Señor delante de los filisteos ? Tomemos con nosotros, de Silo, el arca del pacto del Señor, para que vaya en medio de nosotros y nos libre del poder de nuestros enemigos.

And the people cometh in unto the camp, and the elders of Israel say, `Why hath Jehovah smitten us to-day before the Philistines? we take unto us from Shiloh the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and it cometh into our midst, and He doth save us out of the hand of our enemies.'

4 Y el pueblo envió a Silo, y trajeron de allí el arca del pacto del Señor de los ejércitos que está sobre los querubines; y los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees, estaban allí con el arca del pacto de Dios.

And the people sendeth to Shiloh, and they take up thence the ark of the covenant of Jehovah of Hosts, inhabiting the cherubs, and there two sons of Eli, with the ark of the covenant of God, Hophni and Phinehas.

5 Y aconteció que cuando el arca del pacto del Señor entró al campamento, todo Israel gritó con voz tan fuerte que la tierra vibró.

And it cometh to pass, at the coming in of the ark of the covenant of Jehovah unto the camp, that all Israel shout -- a great shout -- and the earth is moved.

6 A l oír los filisteos el ruido del clamor, dijeron: ¿Qué significa el ruido de este gran clamor en el campamento de los hebreos? Entonces comprendieron que el arca del Señor había llegado al campamento.

And the Philistines hear the noise of the shouting, and say, `What the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews?' and they perceive that the ark of Jehovah hath come in unto the camp.

7 Y los filisteos tuvieron temor, pues dijeron: Dios ha venido al campamento. Y añadieron: ¡Ay de nosotros! Porque nada como esto ha sucedido antes.

And the Philistines are afraid, for they said, `God hath come in unto the camp;' and they say, `Wo to us, for there hath not been like this heretofore.

8 ¡ Ay de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará de la mano de estos dioses poderosos? Estos son los dioses que hirieron a los egipcios en el desierto con toda clase de plagas.

Wo to us, who doth deliver us out of the hand of these honourable gods? these the gods who are smiting the Egyptians with every plague in the wilderness.

9 C obrad ánimo y sed hombres, oh filisteos, para que no lleguéis a ser esclavos de los hebreos como ellos han sido esclavos de vosotros; sed hombres, pues, y pelead.

Strengthen yourselves, and become men, O Philistines, lest ye do service to Hebrews, as they have done to you -- then ye have become men, and have fought.'

10 Y pelearon los filisteos, Israel fue derrotado y cada cual huyó a su tienda; la mortandad fue muy grande, pues de Israel cayeron treinta mil soldados de a pie.

And the Philistines fight, and Israel is smitten, and they flee each to his tents, and the blow is very great, and there fall of Israel thirty thousand footmen;

11 E l arca de Dios fue capturada, y murieron los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees. Muerte de Elí

and the ark of God hath been taken, and the two sons of Eli have died, Hophni and Phinehas.

12 Y un hombre de Benjamín corrió del campo de batalla, y llegó aquel mismo día a Silo, con sus vestidos rotos y polvo sobre su cabeza.

And a man of Benjamin runneth out of the ranks, and cometh into Shiloh, on that day, and his long robes rent, and earth on his head;

13 C uando llegó, he aquí que Elí estaba sentado en su asiento junto al camino esperando ansiosamente, porque su corazón temblaba por causa del arca de Dios. Así pues, el hombre fue a anunciar lo en la ciudad, y toda la ciudad prorrumpió en gritos.

and he cometh in, and lo, Eli is sitting on the throne by the side of the way, watching, for his heart hath been trembling for the ark of God, and the man hath come in to declare in the city, and all the city crieth out.

14 C uando Elí oyó el ruido de los gritos, dijo: ¿Qué significa el ruido de este tumulto? Entonces el hombre se acercó apresuradamente y dio la noticia a Elí.

And Eli heareth the noise of the cry, and saith, `What -- the noise of this tumult!' And the man hasted, and cometh in, and declareth to Eli.

15 E lí tenía noventa y ocho años, sus ojos se habían cegado y no podía ver.

And Eli is a son of ninety and eight years, and his eyes have stood, and he hath not been able to see.

16 Y el hombre dijo a Elí: Yo soy el que vine del campo de batalla. Hoy escapé del campo de batalla. Y Elí preguntó: ¿Cómo fueron las cosas, hijo mío ?

And the man saith unto Eli, `I he who hath come out of the ranks, and I out of the ranks have fled to-day;' and he saith, `What hath been the matter, my son?'

17 R espondió el que trajo la noticia y dijo: Israel ha huido delante de los filisteos, además ha habido gran matanza entre el pueblo, también han muerto tus dos hijos, Ofni y Finees, y el arca de Dios ha sido tomada.

And he who is bearing tidings answereth and saith, `Israel hath fled before the Philistines, and also a great slaughter hath been among the people, and also thy two sons have died -- Hophni and Phinehas -- and the ark of God hath been captured.'

18 Y sucedió que cuando mencionó el arca de Dios, Elí cayó de su asiento hacia atrás, junto a la puerta, se rompió la nuca y murió, pues era entrado en años y pesaba mucho. Había juzgado a Israel cuarenta años.

And it cometh to pass, at his mentioning the ark of God, that he falleth from off the throne backward, by the side of the gate, and his neck is broken, and he dieth, for the man old and heavy, and he hath judged Israel forty years.

19 Y su nuera, la mujer de Finees, estaba encinta y a punto de dar a luz, y al oír la noticia que el arca de Dios había sido tomada y que su suegro y su marido habían muerto, se arrodilló y dio a luz, porque le sobrevinieron los dolores.

And his daughter-in-law, wife of Phinehas, pregnant, about to bear, and she heareth the report of the taking of the ark of God, that her father-in-law and her husband have died, and she boweth, and beareth, for her pains have turned upon her.

20 A l tiempo que moría, las mujeres que estaban junto a ella le dijeron: No temas, porque has dado a luz un hijo. Pero ella no respondió ni prestó atención.

And at the time of her death, when the women who are standing by her say, `Fear not, for a son thou hast borne,' she hath not answered, nor set her heart;

21 Y llamó al niño Icabod, diciendo: ¡Se ha ido la gloria de Israel!, por haber sido tomada el arca de Dios, y por la muerte de su suegro y de su marido.

and she calleth the youth I-Chabod, saying, `Honour hath removed from Israel,' because of the taking of the ark of God, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

22 Y dijo: Se ha ido la gloria de Israel, porque el arca de Dios ha sido tomada.

And she saith, `Honour hath removed from Israel, for the ark of God hath been taken.'
