1 E stos son los nombres de los hijos de Israel que fueron a Egipto con Jacob; cada uno fue con su familia:

And these the names of the sons of Israel who are coming into Egypt with Jacob; a man and his household have they come;

2 R ubén, Simeón, Leví y Judá;

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

3 I sacar, Zabulón y Benjamín;

Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

4 D an, Neftalí, Gad y Aser.

Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

5 T odas las personas que descendieron de Jacob fueron setenta almas. Pero José estaba ya en Egipto.

And all the persons coming out of the thigh of Jacob are seventy persons; as to Joseph, he was in Egypt.

6 Y murió José, y todos sus hermanos, y toda aquella generación.

And Joseph dieth, and all his brethren, and all that generation;

7 P ero los hijos de Israel fueron fecundos y aumentaron mucho, y se multiplicaron y llegaron a ser poderosos en gran manera, y la tierra se llenó de ellos.

and the sons of Israel have been fruitful, and they teem, and multiply, and are very very mighty, and the land is filled with them.

8 Y se levantó sobre Egipto un nuevo rey que no había conocido a José;

And there riseth a new king over Egypt, who hath not known Joseph,

9 y dijo a su pueblo: He aquí, el pueblo de los hijos de Israel es más numeroso y más fuerte que nosotros.

and he saith unto his people, `Lo, the people of the sons of Israel more numerous and mighty than we;

10 P rocedamos, pues, astutamente con él no sea que se multiplique, y en caso de guerra, se una también con los que nos odian y pelee contra nosotros y se vaya de la tierra.

give help! let us act wisely concerning it, lest it multiply, and it hath come to pass, when war happeneth, that it hath been joined, even it, unto those hating us, and hath fought against us, and hath gone out up of the land.'

11 E ntonces pusieron sobre ellos capataces para oprimirlos con duros trabajos. Y edificaron para Faraón las ciudades de almacenaje, Pitón y Ramsés.

And they set over it princes of tribute, so as to afflict it with their burdens, and it buildeth store-cities for Pharaoh, Pithom and Raamses;

12 P ero cuanto más los oprimían, más se multiplicaban y más se extendían, de manera que los egipcios llegaron a temer a los hijos de Israel.

and as they afflict it, so it multiplieth, and so it breaketh forth, and they are vexed because of the sons of Israel;

13 L os egipcios, pues, obligaron a los hijos de Israel a trabajar duramente,

and the Egyptians cause the sons of Israel to serve with rigour,

14 y les amargaron la vida con dura servidumbre en hacer barro y ladrillos y en toda clase de trabajo del campo; todos sus trabajos se los imponían con rigor.

and make their lives bitter in hard service, in clay, and in brick, and in every of service in the field; all their service in which they have served with rigour.

15 Y el rey de Egipto habló a las parteras de las hebreas, una de las cuales se llamaba Sifra, y la otra Puá,

And the king of Egypt speaketh to the midwives, the Hebrewesses, (of whom the name of the one Shiphrah, and the name of the second Puah),

16 y les dijo: Cuando estéis asistiendo a las hebreas a dar a luz, y las veáis sobre el lecho del parto, si es un hijo, le daréis muerte, pero si es una hija, entonces vivirá.

and saith, `When ye cause the Hebrew women to bear, and have looked on the children; if it a son -- then ye have put him to death; and if it a daughter -- then she hath lived.'

17 P ero las parteras temían a Dios, y no hicieron como el rey de Egipto les había mandado, sino que dejaron con vida a los niños.

And the midwives fear God, and have not done as the king of Egypt hath spoken unto them, and keep the lads alive;

18 E l rey de Egipto hizo llamar a las parteras y les dijo: ¿Por qué habéis hecho esto, y habéis dejado con vida a los niños?

and the king of Egypt calleth for the midwives, and saith to them, `Wherefore have ye done this thing, and keep the lads alive?'

19 R espondieron las parteras a Faraón: Porque las mujeres hebreas no son como las egipcias, pues son robustas y dan a luz antes que la partera llegue a ellas.

And the midwives say unto Pharaoh, `Because the Hebrew women not as the Egyptian women, for they lively; before the midwife cometh in unto them -- they have borne!'

20 Y Dios favoreció a las parteras; y el pueblo se multiplicó y llegó a ser muy poderoso.

And God doth good to the midwives, and the people multiply, and are very mighty;

21 Y sucedió que por haber las parteras temido a Dios, El prosperó sus familias.

and it cometh to pass, because the midwives have feared God, that He maketh for them households;

22 E ntonces Faraón ordenó a todo su pueblo, diciendo: Todo hijo que nazca lo echaréis al Nilo, y a toda hija la dejaréis con vida.

and Pharaoh layeth a charge on all his people, saying, `Every son who is born -- into the River ye do cast him, and every daughter ye do keep alive.'
