1 J acob leva les yeux, et regarda; et voici, Ésaü arrivait, avec quatre cents hommes. Il répartit les enfants entre Léa, Rachel, et les deux servantes.

And Jacob lifteth up his eyes, and looketh, and lo, Esau is coming, and with him four hundred men; and he divideth the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two maid-servants;

2 I l plaça en tête les servantes avec leurs enfants, puis Léa avec ses enfants, et enfin Rachel avec Joseph.

and he setteth the maid-servants and their children first, and Leah and her children behind, and Rachel and Joseph last.

3 L ui-même passa devant eux; et il se prosterna en terre sept fois, jusqu'à ce qu'il fût près de son frère.

And he himself passed over before them, and boweth himself to the earth seven times, until his drawing nigh unto his brother,

4 É saü courut à sa rencontre; il l'embrassa, se jeta à son cou, et le baisa. Et ils pleurèrent.

and Esau runneth to meet him, and embraceth him, and falleth on his neck, and kisseth him, and they weep;

5 É saü, levant les yeux, vit les femmes et les enfants, et il dit: Qui sont ceux que tu as là? Et Jacob répondit: Ce sont les enfants que Dieu a accordés à ton serviteur.

and he lifteth up his eyes, and seeth the women and the children, and saith, `What these to thee?' And he saith, `The children with whom God hath favoured thy servant.'

6 L es servantes s'approchèrent, elles et leurs enfants, et se prosternèrent;

And the maid-servants draw nigh, they and their children, and bow themselves;

7 L éa et ses enfants s'approchèrent aussi, et se prosternèrent; ensuite Joseph et Rachel s'approchèrent, et se prosternèrent.

and Leah also draweth nigh, and her children, and they bow themselves; and afterwards Joseph hath drawn nigh with Rachel, and they bow themselves.

8 É saü dit: A quoi destines-tu tout ce camp que j'ai rencontré? Et Jacob répondit: A trouver grâce aux yeux de mon seigneur.

And he saith, `What to thee all this camp which I have met?' and he saith, `To find grace in the eyes of my lord.'

9 É saü dit: Je suis dans l'abondance, mon frère; garde ce qui est à toi.

And Esau saith, `I have abundance, my brother, let it be to thyself that which thou hast.'

10 E t Jacob répondit: Non, je te prie, si j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, accepte de ma main mon présent; car c'est pour cela que j'ai regardé ta face comme on regarde la face de Dieu, et tu m'as accueilli favorablement.

And Jacob saith, `Nay, I pray thee, if, I pray thee, I have found grace in thine eyes, then thou hast received my present from my hand, because that I have seen thy face, as the seeing of the face of God, and thou art pleased with me;

11 A ccepte donc mon présent qui t'a été offert, puisque Dieu m'a comblé de grâces, et que je ne manque de rien. Il insista auprès de lui, et Ésaü accepta.

receive, I pray thee, my blessing, which is brought to thee, because God hath favoured me, and because I have all;' and he presseth on him, and he receiveth,

12 É saü dit: Partons, mettons-nous en route; j'irai devant toi.

and saith, `Let us journey and go on, and I go on before thee.'

13 J acob lui répondit: Mon seigneur sait que les enfants sont délicats, et que j'ai des brebis et des vaches qui allaitent; si l'on forçait leur marche un seul jour, tout le troupeau périrait.

And he saith unto him, `My lord knoweth that the children tender, and the suckling flock and the herd with me; when they have beaten them one day, then hath all the flock died.

14 Q ue mon seigneur prenne les devants sur son serviteur; et moi, je suivrai lentement, au pas du troupeau qui me précédera, et au pas des enfants, jusqu'à ce que j'arrive chez mon seigneur, à Séir.

Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant, and I -- I lead on gently, according to the foot of the work which before me, and to the foot of the children, until that I come unto my lord, to Seir.'

15 É saü dit: Je veux au moins laisser avec toi une partie de mes gens. Et Jacob répondit: Pourquoi cela? Que je trouve seulement grâce aux yeux de mon seigneur!

And Esau saith, `Let me, I pray thee, place with thee some of the people who with me;' and he said, `Why this? I find grace in the eyes of my lord.'

16 L e même jour, Ésaü reprit le chemin de Séir.

And turn back on that day doth Esau on his way to Seir;

17 J acob partit pour Succoth. Il bâtit une maison pour lui, et il fit des cabanes pour ses troupeaux. C'est pourquoi l'on a appelé ce lieu de nom de Succoth.

and Jacob hath journeyed to Succoth, and buildeth to himself a house, and for his cattle hath made booths, therefore hath he called the name of the place Succoth.

18 A son retour de Paddan Aram, Jacob arriva heureusement à la ville de Sichem, dans le pays de Canaan, et il campa devant la ville.

And Jacob cometh in to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which in the land of Canaan, in his coming from Padan-Aram, and encampeth before the city,

19 I l acheta la portion du champ où il avait dressé sa tente, des fils d'Hamor, père de Sichem, pour cent kesita.

and he buyeth the portion of the field where he hath stretched out his tent, from the hand of the sons of Hamor, father of Shechem, for a hundred kesitah;

20 E t là, il éleva un autel, qu'il appela El Élohé Israël.

and he setteth up there an altar, and proclaimeth at it God -- the God of Israel.
