1 N e réprimande pas rudement le vieillard, mais exhorte-le comme un père; exhorte les jeunes gens comme des frères,

An aged person thou mayest not rebuke, but be entreating as a father; younger persons as brethren;

2 l es femmes âgées comme des mères, celles qui sont jeunes comme des soeurs, en toute pureté.

aged women as mothers, younger ones as sisters -- in all purity;

3 H onore les veuves qui sont véritablement veuves.

honour widows who are really widows;

4 S i une veuve a des enfants ou des petits-enfants, qu'ils apprennent avant tout à exercer la piété envers leur propre famille, et à rendre à leurs parents ce qu'ils ont reçu d'eux; car cela est agréable à Dieu.

and if any widow have children or grandchildren, let them learn first to their own house to show piety, and to give back a recompense to the parents, for this is right and acceptable before God.

5 C elle qui est véritablement veuve, et qui est demeurée dans l'isolement, met son espérance en Dieu et persévère nuit et jour dans les supplications et les prières.

And she who is really a widow and desolate, hath hoped upon God, and doth remain in the supplications and in the prayers night and day,

6 M ais celle qui vit dans les plaisirs est morte, quoique vivante.

and she who is given to luxury, living -- hath died;

7 D éclare-leur ces choses, afin qu'elles soient irréprochables.

and these things charge, that they may be blameless;

8 S i quelqu'un n'a pas soin des siens, et principalement de ceux de sa famille, il a renié la foi, et il est pire qu'un infidèle.

and if any one for his own -- and especially for those of the household -- doth not provide, the faith he hath denied, and than an unbeliever he is worse.

9 Q u'une veuve, pour être inscrite sur le rôle, n'ait pas moins de soixante ans, qu'elle ait été femme d'un seul mari,

A widow -- let her not be enrolled under sixty years of age, having been a wife of one husband,

10 q u'elle soit recommandable par de bonnes oeuvres, ayant élevé des enfants, exercé l'hospitalité, lavé les pieds des saints, secouru les malheureux, pratiqué toute espèce de bonne oeuvre.

in good works being testified to: if she brought up children, if she entertained strangers, if saints' feet she washed, if those in tribulation she relieved, if every good work she followed after;

11 M ais refuse les jeunes veuves; car, lorsque la volupté les détache du Christ, elles veulent se marier,

and younger widows be refusing, for when they may revel against the Christ, they wish to marry,

12 e t se rendent coupables en ce qu'elles violent leur premier engagement.

having judgment, because the first faith they did cast away,

13 A vec cela, étant oisives, elles apprennent à aller de maison en maison; et non seulement elles sont oisives, mais encore causeuses et intrigantes, disant ce qu'il ne faut pas dire.

and at the same time also, they learn idle, going about the houses; and not only idle, but also tattlers and busybodies, speaking the things they ought not;

14 J e veux donc que les jeunes se marient, qu'elles aient des enfants, qu'elles dirigent leur maison, qu'elles ne donnent à l'adversaire aucune occasion de médire;

I wish, therefore, younger ones to marry, to bear children, to be mistress of the house, to give no occasion to the opposer to reviling;

15 c ar déjà quelques-unes se sont détournées pour suivre Satan.

for already certain did turn aside after the Adversary.

16 S i quelque fidèle, homme ou femme, a des veuves, qu'il les assiste, et que l'Église n'en soit point chargée, afin qu'elle puisse assister celles qui sont véritablement veuves.

If any believing man or believing woman have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the assembly be burdened, that those really widows it may relieve.

17 Q ue les anciens qui dirigent bien soient jugés dignes d'un double honneur, surtout ceux qui travaillent à la prédication et à l'enseignement.

The well-leading elders of double honour let them be counted worthy, especially those labouring in word and teaching,

18 C ar l'Écriture dit: Tu n'emmuselleras point le boeuf quand il foule le grain. Et l'ouvrier mérite son salaire.

for the Writing saith, `An ox treading out thou shalt not muzzle,' and `Worthy the workman of his reward.'

19 N e reçois point d'accusation contre un ancien, si ce n'est sur la déposition de deux ou trois témoins.

Against an elder an accusation receive not, except upon two or three witnesses.

20 C eux qui pèchent, reprends-les devant tous, afin que les autres aussi éprouvent de la crainte.

Those sinning, reprove before all, that the others also may have fear;

21 J e te conjure devant Dieu, devant Jésus Christ, et devant les anges élus, d'observer ces choses sans prévention, et de ne rien faire par faveur.

I testify fully, before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the choice messengers, that these things thou mayest keep, without forejudging, doing nothing by partiality.

22 N 'impose les mains à personne avec précipitation, et ne participe pas aux péchés d'autrui; toi-même, conserve-toi pur.

Be laying hands quickly on no one, nor be having fellowship with sins of others; be keeping thyself pure;

23 N e continue pas à ne boire que de l'eau; mais fais usage d'un peu de vin, à cause de ton estomac et de tes fréquentes indispositions.

no longer be drinking water, but a little wine be using, because of thy stomach and of thine often infirmities;

24 L es péchés de certains hommes sont manifestes, même avant qu'on les juge, tandis que chez d'autres, ils ne se découvrent que dans la suite.

of certain men the sins are manifest beforehand, leading before to judgment, and certain also they follow after;

25 D e même, les bonnes oeuvres sont manifestes, et celles qui ne le sont pas ne peuvent rester cachées.

in like manner also the right works are manifest beforehand, and those that are otherwise are not able to be hid.
