1 L orsque David fut établi dans sa maison, il dit à Nathan le prophète: Voici, j'habite dans une maison de cèdre, et l'arche de l'alliance de l'Éternel est sous une tente.

And it cometh to pass as David sat in his house, that David saith unto Nathan the prophet, `Lo, I am dwelling in a house of cedars, and the ark of the covenant of Jehovah under curtains;'

2 N athan répondit à David: Fais tout ce que tu as dans le coeur, car Dieu est avec toi.

and Nathan saith unto David, `All that in thy heart do, for God with thee.'

3 L a nuit suivante, la parole de Dieu fut adressée à Nathan:

And it cometh to pass on that night that a word of God is unto Nathan, saying,

4 V a dire à mon serviteur David: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Ce ne sera pas toi qui me bâtiras une maison pour que j'en fasse ma demeure.

`Go, and thou hast said unto David My servant, Thus said Jehovah, Thou dost not build for Me the house to dwell in:

5 C ar je n'ai point habité dans une maison depuis le jour où j'ai fait monter Israël jusqu'à ce jour; mais j'ai été de tente en tente et de demeure en demeure.

for I have not dwelt in a house from the day that I brought up Israel till this day, and I am from tent unto tent: and from the tabernacle,

6 P artout où j'ai marché avec tout Israël, ai-je dit un mot à quelqu'un des juges d'Israël à qui j'avais ordonné de paître mon peuple, ai-je dit: Pourquoi ne me bâtissez-vous pas une maison de cèdre?

whithersoever I have walked up and down among all Israel, a word spake I, with one of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to feed My people, saying, Why have ye not built for Me a house of cedars?

7 M aintenant tu diras à mon serviteur David: Ainsi parle l'Éternel des armées: Je t'ai pris au pâturage, derrière les brebis, pour que tu fusses chef de mon peuple d'Israël;

`And now, thus dost thou say to My servant, to David, Thus said Jehovah of Hosts, I have taken thee from the habitation, from after the sheep, to be leader over My people Israel,

8 j 'ai été avec toi partout où tu as marché, j'ai exterminé tous tes ennemis devant toi, et j'ai rendu ton nom semblable au nom des grands qui sont sur la terre;

and I am with thee whithersoever thou hast walked, and I cut off all thine enemies from thy presence, and have made for thee a name like the name of the great ones who in the earth.

9 j 'ai donné une demeure à mon peuple d'Israël, et je l'ai planté pour qu'il y soit fixé et ne soit plus agité, pour que les méchants ne le détruisent plus comme auparavant

`And I have prepared a place for My people Israel, and planted it, and it hath dwelt in its place, and is not troubled any more, and the sons of perverseness add not to wear it out as at first,

10 e t comme à l'époque où j'avais établi des juges sur mon peuple d'Israël. J'ai humilié tous tes ennemis. Et je t'annonce que l'Éternel te bâtira une maison.

yea, even from the days that I appointed judges over My people Israel. `And I have humbled all thine enemies, and I declare to thee that a house doth Jehovah build for thee,

11 Q uand tes jours seront accomplis et que tu iras auprès de tes pères, j'élèverai ta postérité après toi, l'un de tes fils, et j'affermirai son règne.

and it hath come to pass, when thy days have been fulfilled to go with thy fathers, that I have raised up thy seed after thee, who is of thy sons, and I have established his kingdom,

12 C e sera lui qui me bâtira une maison, et j'affermirai pour toujours son trône.

he doth build for Me a house, and I have established his throne unto the age;

13 J e serai pour lui un père, et il sera pour moi un fils; et je ne lui retirerai point ma grâce, comme je l'ai retirée à celui qui t'a précédé.

I am to him for a father, and he is to Me for a son, and My kindness I turn not aside from him as I turned it aside from him who was before thee,

14 J e l'établirai pour toujours dans ma maison et dans mon royaume, et son trône sera pour toujours affermi.

and I have established him in My house, and in My kingdom unto the age, and his throne is established unto the age.'

15 N athan rapporta à David toutes ces paroles et toute cette vision.

According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so spake Nathan unto David.

16 E t le roi David alla se présenter devant l'Éternel, et dit: Qui suis-je, Éternel Dieu, et quelle est ma maison, pour que tu m'aies fait parvenir où je suis?

And David the king cometh in and sitteth before Jehovah, and saith, `Who I, O Jehovah God, and what my house, that Thou hast brought me hitherto?

17 C 'est peu de chose à tes yeux, ô Dieu! Tu parles de la maison de ton serviteur pour les temps à venir. Et tu daignes porter les regards sur moi à la manière des hommes, toi qui es élevé, Éternel Dieu!

And this is small in Thine eyes, O God, and Thou speakest concerning the house of thy servant afar off, and hast seen me as a type of the man who is on high, O Jehovah God!

18 Q ue pourrait te dire encore David sur la gloire accordée à ton serviteur? Tu connais ton serviteur.

`What doth David add more unto Thee for the honour of Thy servant; and Thou Thy servant hast known.

19 O Éternel! c'est à cause de ton serviteur, et selon ton coeur, que tu as fait toutes ces grandes choses, pour les lui révéler.

O Jehovah, for Thy servant's sake, and according to Thine own heart Thou hast done all this greatness, to make known all these great things.

20 O Éternel! nul n'est semblable à toi et il n'y a point d'autre Dieu que toi, d'après tout ce que nous avons entendu de nos oreilles.

O Jehovah, there is none like Thee, and there is no god save Thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

21 E st-il sur la terre une seule nation qui soit comme ton peuple d'Israël, que Dieu est venu racheter pour en former son peuple, pour te faire un nom et pour accomplir des miracles et des prodiges, en chassant des nations devant ton peuple que tu as racheté d'Égypte?

`And who as Thy people Israel, one nation in the earth whom God hath gone to ransom to Him for a people, to make for Thee a name great and fearful, to cast out from the presence of Thy people whom Thou hast ransomed out of Egypt -- nations?

22 T u as établi ton peuple d'Israël, pour qu'il fût ton peuple à toujours; et toi, Éternel, tu es devenu son Dieu.

Yea, Thou dost appoint Thy people Israel to Thee for a people unto the age, and Thou, O Jehovah, hast been to them for God.

23 M aintenant, ô Éternel! que la parole que tu as prononcée sur ton serviteur et sur sa maison subsiste éternellement, et agis selon ta parole!

`And now, O Jehovah, the word that Thou hast spoken concerning Thy servant, and concerning his house, let be stedfast unto the age, and do as Thou hast spoken;

24 Q u'elle subsiste, afin que ton nom soit à jamais glorifié et que l'on dise: L'Éternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël, est un Dieu pour Israël! Et que la maison de David, ton serviteur, soit affermie devant toi!

and let it be stedfast, and Thy name is great unto the age, saying, Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel, is God to Israel, and the house of Thy servant David is established before Thee;

25 C ar toi-même, ô mon Dieu, tu as révélé à ton serviteur que tu lui bâtirais une maison. C'est pourquoi ton serviteur a osé prier devant toi.

for Thou, O my God, Thou hast uncovered the ear of Thy servant -- to build to him a house, therefore hath Thy servant found to pray before Thee.

26 M aintenant, ô Éternel! tu es Dieu, et tu as annoncé cette grâce à ton serviteur.

`And now, Jehovah, Thou God Himself, and Thou speakest concerning Thy servant this goodness;

27 V euille donc bénir la maison de ton serviteur, afin qu'elle subsiste à toujours devant toi! Car ce que tu bénis, ô Éternel! est béni pour l'éternité.

and now, Thou hast been pleased to bless the house of Thy servant, to be to the age before Thee; for Thou, O Jehovah, hast blessed, and it is blessed to the age.'
