1 L a parole que l'Éternel prononça sur Babylone, sur le pays des Chaldéens, par Jérémie, le prophète:

The word that Jehovah hath spoken concerning Babylon, concerning the land of the Chaldeans, by the hand of Jeremiah the prophet:

2 A nnoncez-le parmi les nations, publiez-le, élevez une bannière! Publiez-le, ne cachez rien! Dites: Babylone est prise! Bel est confondu, Merodac est brisé! Ses idoles sont confondues, ses idoles sont brisées!

`Declare ye among nations, and sound, And lift up an ensign, sound, do not hide, Say ye: Captured hath been Babylon, Put to shame hath been Bel, Broken hath been Merodach, Put to shame have been her grievous things, Broken have been her idols.

3 C ar une nation monte contre elle du septentrion, Elle réduira son pays en désert, Il n'y aura plus d'habitants; Hommes et bêtes fuient, s'en vont.

For come up against her hath a nation from the north, It maketh her land become a desolation, And there is not an inhabitant in it. From man even unto beast, They have moved, they have gone.

4 E n ces jours, en ce temps-là, dit l'Éternel, Les enfants d'Israël et les enfants de Juda reviendront ensemble; Ils marcheront en pleurant, Et ils chercheront l'Éternel, leur Dieu.

In those days, and at that time, An affirmation of Jehovah, Come in do sons of Israel, They and sons of Judah together, Going on and weeping they go, And Jehovah their God they seek.

5 I ls s'informeront du chemin de Sion, Ils tourneront vers elle leurs regards: Venez, attachez-vous à l'Éternel, Par une alliance éternelle qui ne soit jamais oubliée!

Zion they ask the way, Thitherward their faces: Come in, and we are joined unto Jehovah, A covenant age-during -- not forgotten.

6 M on peuple était un troupeau de brebis perdues; Leurs bergers les égaraient, les faisaient errer par les montagnes; Elles allaient des montagnes sur les collines, Oubliant leur bercail.

A perishing flock hath My people been, Their shepherds have caused them to err, the mountains causing them to go back, From mountain unto hill they have gone, They have forgotten their crouching-place.

7 T ous ceux qui les trouvaient les dévoraient, Et leurs ennemis disaient: Nous ne sommes point coupables, Puisqu'ils ont péché contre l'Éternel, la demeure de la justice, Contre l'Éternel, l'espérance de leurs pères.

All finding them have devoured them, And their adversaries have said: We are not guilty, Because that they sinned against Jehovah, The habitation of righteousness, And the hope of their fathers -- Jehovah.

8 F uyez de Babylone, sortez du pays des Chaldéens, Et soyez comme des boucs à la tête du troupeau!

Move ye from the midst of Babylon, And from the land of the Chaldeans go out. And be as he-goats before a flock.

9 C ar voici, je vais susciter et faire monter contre Babylone Une multitude de grandes nations du pays du septentrion; Elles se rangeront en bataille contre elle, et s'en empareront; Leurs flèches sont comme un habile guerrier, Qui ne revient pas à vide.

For, lo, I am stirring up, And am causing to come up against Babylon, An assembly of great nations from a land of the north, And they have set in array against her, From thence she is captured, Its arrow -- as a skilful hero -- returneth not empty,

10 E t la Chaldée sera livrée au pillage; Tous ceux qui la pilleront seront rassasiés, dit l'Éternel.

And Chaldea hath been for a spoil, All her spoilers are satisfied, An affirmation of Jehovah.

11 O ui, soyez dans la joie, dans l'allégresse, Vous qui avez pillé mon héritage! Oui, bondissez comme une génisse dans l'herbe, Hennissez comme des chevaux fougueux!

Because thou rejoicest, because thou exultest, O spoilers of Mine inheritance, Because thou increasest as a heifer the tender grass, And dost cry aloud as bulls,

12 V otre mère est couverte de confusion, Celle qui vous a enfantés rougit de honte; Voici, elle est la dernière des nations, C'est un désert, une terre sèche et aride.

Ashamed hath been your mother greatly, Confounded hath she been that bare you, Lo, the hindermost of nations a wilderness, A dry land, and a desert.

13 A cause de la colère de l'Éternel, elle ne sera plus habitée, Elle ne sera plus qu'une solitude. Tous ceux qui passeront près de Babylone Seront dans l'étonnement et siffleront sur toutes ses plaies.

Because of the wrath of Jehovah it is not inhabited, And it hath been a desolation -- all of it. Every passer by at Babylon is astonished, And doth hiss because of all her plagues.

14 R angez-vous en bataille autour de Babylone, vous tous, archers! Tirez contre elle, n'épargnez pas les flèches! Car elle a péché contre l'Éternel.

Set yourselves in array against Babylon round about, All ye treading a bow, Shoot at her, have no pity on the arrow, For against Jehovah she hath sinned.

15 P oussez de tous côtés contre elle un cri de guerre! Elle tend les mains; Ses fondements s'écroulent; Ses murs sont renversés. Car c'est la vengeance de l'Éternel. Vengez-vous sur elle! Faites-lui comme elle a fait!

Shout against her round about, She hath given forth her hand, Fallen have her foundations, Thrown down have been her walls, For it the vengeance of Jehovah, Be avenged of her, as she did -- do ye to her.

16 E xterminez de Babylone celui qui sème, Et celui qui manie la faucille au temps de la moisson! Devant le glaive destructeur, Que chacun se tourne vers son peuple, Que chacun fuie vers son pays.

Cut off the sower from Babylon, And him handling the sickle in the time of harvest, Because of the oppressing sword, Each unto his people -- they turn, And each to his land -- they flee.

17 I sraël est une brebis égarée, que les lions ont chassée; Le roi d'Assyrie l'a dévorée le premier; Et ce dernier lui a brisé les os, Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone.

A scattered sheep is Israel, lions have driven away, At first, devour him did the king of Asshur, And now, at last, broken his bone Hath Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon.

18 C 'est pourquoi ainsi parle l'Éternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël: Voici, je châtierai le roi de Babylone et son pays, Comme j'ai châtié le roi d'Assyrie.

Therefore thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel: Lo, I am seeing after the king of Babylon, And after his land, As I have seen after the king of Asshur;

19 J e ramènerai Israël dans sa demeure; Il aura ses pâturages du Carmel et du Basan, Et son âme se rassasiera sur la montagne d'Éphraïm et dans Galaad.

And I have brought back Israel unto his habitation, And he hath fed on Carmel, and on Bashan. And in mount Ephraim, and on Gilead is his soul satisfied.

20 E n ces jours, en ce temps-là, dit l'Éternel, On cherchera l'iniquité d'Israël, et elle n'existera plus, Le péché de Juda, et il ne se trouvera plus; Car je pardonnerai au reste que j'aurai laissé.

In those days, and at that time, An affirmation of Jehovah, Sought is the iniquity of Israel, and it is not, And the sin of Judah, and it is not found, For I am propitious to those whom I leave!

21 M onte contre le pays doublement rebelle, Contre ses habitants, et châtie-les! Poursuis, massacre, extermine-les! dit l'Éternel, Exécute entièrement mes ordres!

Against the land of Merathaim: Go up against it, and unto the inhabitants of Pekod, Waste and devote their posterity, An affirmation of Jehovah, And do according to all that I have commanded thee.

22 D es cris de guerre retentissent dans le pays, Et le désastre est grand.

A noise of battle in the land, and of great destruction.

23 E h quoi! il est rompu, brisé, le marteau de toute la terre! Babylone est détruite au milieu des nations!

How hath it been cut and broken, The hammer of the whole earth! How hath Babylon been for a desolation among nations!

24 J e t'ai tendu un piège, et tu as été prise, Babylone, A l'improviste; Tu as été atteinte, saisie, Parce que tu as lutté contre l'Éternel.

I have laid a snare for thee, And also -- thou art captured, O Babylon, And thou -- thou hast known, Thou hast been found, and also art caught, For against Jehovah thou hast stirred thyself up.

25 L 'Éternel a ouvert son arsenal, Et il en a tiré les armes de sa colère; Car c'est là une oeuvre du Seigneur, de l'Éternel des armées, Dans le pays des Chaldéens.

Jehovah hath opened His treasury, And He bringeth out the weapons of His indignation, For a work to the Lord Jehovah of Hosts, In the land of the Chaldeans.

26 P énétrez de toutes parts dans Babylone, ouvrez ses greniers, Faites-y des monceaux comme des tas de gerbes, Et détruisez-la! Qu'il ne reste plus rien d'elle!

Come ye in to her from the extremity, Open ye her storehouses, Raise her up as heaps, and devote her, Let her have no remnant.

27 T uez tous ses taureaux, qu'on les égorge! Malheur à eux! car leur jour est arrivé, Le temps de leur châtiment.

Slay all her kine, they go down to slaughter, Wo on them, for come hath their day, The time of their inspection.

28 É coutez les cris des fuyards, de ceux qui se sauvent du pays de Babylone Pour annoncer dans Sion la vengeance de l'Éternel, notre Dieu, La vengeance de son temple!

A voice of fugitives and escaped ones from the land of Babylon, To declare in Zion the vengeance of Jehovah our God, The vengeance of His temple.

29 A ppelez contre Babylone les archers, vous tous qui maniez l'arc! Campez autour d'elle, que personne n'échappe, Rendez-lui selon ses oeuvres, Faites-lui entièrement comme elle a fait! Car elle s'est élevée avec fierté contre l'Éternel, Contre le Saint d'Israël.

Summon unto Babylon archers, all treading the bow, Encamp against her round about, Let have no escape; Recompense to her according to her work, According to all that she did -- do to her, For unto Jehovah she hath been proud, Unto the Holy One of Israel.

30 C 'est pourquoi ses jeunes gens tomberont dans les rues, Et tous ses hommes de guerre périront en ce jour, Dit l'Éternel.

Therefore fall do her young men in her broad places, And all her men of war are cut off in that day, An affirmation of Jehovah.

31 V oici, j'en veux à toi, orgueilleuse! Dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel des armées; Car ton jour est arrivé, Le temps de ton châtiment.

Lo, I against thee, O pride, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah of Hosts, For thy day hath come, the time of thy inspection.

32 L 'orgueilleuse chancellera et tombera, Et personne ne la relèvera; Je mettrai le feu à ses villes, Et il en dévorera tous les alentours.

And stumbled hath pride, And he hath fallen, and hath no raiser up, And I have kindled a fire in his cities, And it hath devoured all round about him.

33 A insi parle l'Éternel des armées: Les enfants d'Israël et les enfants de Juda sont ensemble opprimés; Tous ceux qui les ont emmenés captifs les retiennent, Et refusent de les relâcher.

Thus said Jehovah of Hosts: Oppressed are the sons of Israel, And the sons of Judah together, And all their captors have kept hold on them, They have refused to send them away.

34 M ais leur vengeur est puissant, Lui dont l'Éternel des armées est le nom; Il défendra leur cause, Afin de donner le repos au pays, Et de faire trembler les habitants de Babylone.

Their Redeemer strong, Jehovah of Hosts His name, He doth thoroughly plead their cause, So as to cause the land to rest, And He hath given trouble to the inhabitants of Babylon.

35 L 'épée contre les Chaldéens! dit l'Éternel, Contre les habitants de Babylone, ses chefs et ses sages!

A sword for the Chaldeans, An affirmation of Jehovah, And it on the inhabitants of Babylon, And on her heads, and on her wise men;

36 L 'épée contre les prophètes de mensonge! qu'ils soient comme des insensés! L'épée contre ses vaillants hommes! qu'ils soient consternés!

A sword on the princes, And they have become foolish; A sword on her mighty ones, And they have been broken down;

37 L 'épée contre ses chevaux et ses chars! Contre les gens de toute espèce qui sont au milieu d'elle! Qu'ils deviennent semblables à des femmes! L'épée contre ses trésors! qu'ils soient pillés!

A sword on his horses and on his chariot, And on all the rabble who in her midst, And they have become women; A sword on her treasuries, And they have been spoiled;

38 L a sécheresse contre ses eaux! qu'elles tarissent! Car c'est un pays d'idoles; Ils sont fous de leurs idoles.

A sword on her waters, and they have been dried up, For it a land of graven images, And in idols they do boast themselves.

39 C 'est pourquoi les animaux du désert s'y établiront avec les chacals, Et les autruches y feront leur demeure; Elle ne sera plus jamais habitée, Elle ne sera plus jamais peuplée.

Therefore dwell do Ziim with Iim, Yea, dwelt in her have daughters of the ostrich, And it is not inhabited any more for ever, Nor dwelt in unto all generations.

40 C omme Sodome et Gomorrhe, et les villes voisines, que Dieu détruisit, Dit l'Éternel, Elle ne sera plus habitée, Elle ne sera le séjour d'aucun homme.

As overthrown by God with Sodom, And with Gomorrah, and with its neighbours, An affirmation of Jehovah, none doth dwell there, Nor sojourn in her doth a son of man.

41 V oici, un peuple vient du septentrion, Une grande nation et des rois puissants Se lèvent des extrémités de la terre.

Lo, a people hath come from the north, Even a great nation, And many kings are stirred up from the sides of the earth.

42 I ls portent l'arc et le javelot; Ils sont cruels, sans miséricorde; Leur voix mugit comme la mer; Ils sont montés sur des chevaux, Prêts à combattre comme un seul homme, Contre toi, fille de Babylone!

Bow and halbert they seize, Cruel they, and they have no mercy, Their voice as a sea soundeth, and on horses they ride, Set in array as a man for battle, Against thee, O daughter of Babylon.

43 L e roi de Babylone apprend la nouvelle, Et ses mains s'affaiblissent, L'angoisse le saisit, Comme la douleur d'une femme qui accouche...

Heard hath the king of Babylon their report, And feeble have been his hands, Distress hath seized him; pain as a travailing woman.

44 V oici, tel qu'un lion, il monte des rives orgueilleuses du Jourdain Contre la demeure forte; Soudain je les en chasserai, Et j'établirai sur elle celui que j'ai choisi. Car qui est semblable à moi? qui me donnera des ordres? Et quel est le chef qui me résistera?

Lo, as a lion he cometh up, Because of the rising of the Jordan, Unto the enduring habitation, But I cause to rest, I cause them to run from off her. And who is chosen? on her I lay a charge, For who like Me? And who doth convene Me? And who this shepherd who standeth before Me?

45 C 'est pourquoi écoutez la résolution que l'Éternel a prise contre Babylone, Et les desseins qu'il a conçus contre le pays des Chaldéens! Certainement on les traînera comme de faibles brebis, Certainement on ravagera leur demeure.

Therefore, hear ye the counsel of Jehovah, That He counselled concerning Babylon, And His devices that He hath devised Concerning the land of the Chaldeans; Drag them out do not little ones of the flock, Doth He not make desolate over them the habitation?

46 A u bruit de la prise de Babylone la terre tremble, Et un cri se fait entendre parmi les nations.

From the voice: Captured was Babylon, Hath the earth been shaken, And a cry among nations hath been heard!
