1 M ais un homme nommé Ananias, avec Saphira sa femme, vendit une propriété,

And a certain man, Ananias by name, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,

2 e t retint une partie du prix, sa femme le sachant; puis il apporta le reste, et le déposa aux pieds des apôtres.

and did keep back of the price -- his wife also knowing -- and having brought a certain part, at the feet of the apostles he laid.

3 P ierre lui dit: Ananias, pourquoi Satan a-t-il rempli ton coeur, au point que tu mentes au Saint Esprit, et que tu aies retenu une partie du prix du champ?

And Peter said, `Ananias, wherefore did the Adversary fill thy heart, for thee to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back of the price of the place?

4 S 'il n'eût pas été vendu, ne te restait-il pas? Et, après qu'il a été vendu, le prix n'était-il pas à ta disposition? Comment as-tu pu mettre en ton coeur un pareil dessein? Ce n'est pas à des hommes que tu as menti, mais à Dieu.

while it remained, did it not remain thine? and having been sold, in thy authority was it not? why it that thou didst put in thy heart this thing? thou didst not lie to men, but to God;'

5 A nanias, entendant ces paroles, tomba, et expira. Une grande crainte saisit tous les auditeurs.

and Ananias hearing these words, having fallen down, did expire, and great fear came upon all who heard these things,

6 L es jeunes gens, s'étant levés, l'enveloppèrent, l'emportèrent, et l'ensevelirent.

and having risen, the younger men wound him up, and having carried forth, they buried.

7 E nviron trois heures plus tard, sa femme entra, sans savoir ce qui était arrivé.

And it came to pass, about three hours after, that his wife, not knowing what hath happened, came in,

8 P ierre lui adressa la parole: Dis-moi, est-ce à un tel prix que vous avez vendu le champ? Oui, répondit-elle, c'est à ce prix-là.

and Peter answered her, `Tell me if for so much ye sold the place;' and she said, `Yes, for so much.'

9 A lors Pierre lui dit: Comment vous êtes-vous accordés pour tenter l'Esprit du Seigneur? Voici, ceux qui ont enseveli ton mari sont à la porte, et ils t'emporteront.

And Peter said unto her, `How was it agreed by you, to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? lo, the feet of those who did bury thy husband at the door, and they shall carry thee forth;'

10 A u même instant, elle tomba aux pieds de l'apôtre, et expira. Les jeunes gens, étant entrés, la trouvèrent morte; ils l'emportèrent, et l'ensevelirent auprès de son mari.

and she fell down presently at his feet, and expired, and the young men having come in, found her dead, and having carried forth, they buried by her husband;

11 U ne grande crainte s'empara de toute l'assemblée et de tous ceux qui apprirent ces choses.

and great fear came upon all the assembly, and upon all who heard these things.

12 B eaucoup de miracles et de prodiges se faisaient au milieu du peuple par les mains des apôtres. Ils se tenaient tous ensemble au portique de Salomon,

And through the hands of the apostles came many signs and wonders among the people, and they were with one accord all in the porch of Solomon;

13 e t aucun des autres n'osait se joindre à eux; mais le peuple les louait hautement.

and of the rest no one was daring to join himself to them, but the people were magnifying them,

14 L e nombre de ceux qui croyaient au Seigneur, hommes et femmes, s'augmentait de plus en plus;

(and the more were believers added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women,)

15 e n sorte qu'on apportait les malades dans les rues et qu'on les plaçait sur des lits et des couchettes, afin que, lorsque Pierre passerait, son ombre au moins couvrît quelqu'un d'eux.

so as into the broad places to bring forth the ailing, and to lay upon couches and mats, that at the coming of Peter, even shadow might overshadow some one of them;

16 L a multitude accourait aussi des villes voisines à Jérusalem, amenant des malades et des gens tourmentés par des esprits impurs; et tous étaient guéris.

and there were coming together also the people of the cities round about to Jerusalem, bearing ailing persons, and those harassed by unclean spirits -- who were all healed.

17 C ependant le souverain sacrificateur et tous ceux qui étaient avec lui, savoir le parti des sadducéens, se levèrent, remplis de jalousie,

And having risen, the chief priest, and all those with him -- being the sect of the Sadducees -- were filled with zeal,

18 m irent les mains sur les apôtres, et les jetèrent dans la prison publique.

and laid their hands upon the apostles, and did put them in a public prison;

19 M ais un ange du Seigneur, ayant ouvert pendant la nuit les portes de la prison, les fit sortir, et leur dit:

and a messenger of the Lord through the night opened the doors of the prison, having also brought them forth, he said,

20 A llez, tenez-vous dans le temple, et annoncez au peuple toutes les paroles de cette vie.

`Go on, and standing, speak in the temple to the people all the sayings of this life;'

21 A yant entendu cela, ils entrèrent dès le matin dans le temple, et se mirent à enseigner. Le souverain sacrificateur et ceux qui étaient avec lui étant survenus, ils convoquèrent le sanhédrin et tous les anciens des fils d'Israël, et ils envoyèrent chercher les apôtres à la prison.

and having heard, they did enter at the dawn into the temple, and were teaching. And the chief priest having come, and those with him, they called together the sanhedrim and all the senate of the sons of Israel, and they sent to the prison to have them brought,

22 L es huissiers, à leur arrivée, ne les trouvèrent point dans la prison. Ils s'en retournèrent, et firent leur rapport,

and the officers having come, did not find them in the prison, and having turned back, they told,

23 e n disant: Nous avons trouvé la prison soigneusement fermée, et les gardes qui étaient devant les portes; mais, après avoir ouvert, nous n'avons trouvé personne dedans.

saying -- `The prison indeed we found shut in all safety, and the keepers standing without before the doors, and having opened -- within we found no one.'

24 L orsqu'ils eurent entendu ces paroles, le commandant du temple et les principaux sacrificateurs ne savaient que penser des apôtres et des suites de cette affaire.

And as the priest, and the magistrate of the temple, and the chief priests, heard these words, they were doubting concerning them to what this would come;

25 Q uelqu'un vint leur dire: Voici, les hommes que vous avez mis en prison sont dans le temple, et ils enseignent le peuple.

and coming near, a certain one told them, saying -- `Lo, the men whom ye did put in the prison are in the temple standing and teaching the people;'

26 A lors le commandant partit avec les huissiers, et les conduisit sans violence, car ils avaient peur d'être lapidés par le peuple.

then the magistrate having gone away with officers, brought them without violence, for they were fearing the people, lest they should be stoned;

27 A près qu'ils les eurent amenés en présence du sanhédrin, le souverain sacrificateur les interrogea en ces termes:

and having brought them, they set in the sanhedrim, and the chief priest questioned them,

28 N e vous avons-nous pas défendu expressément d'enseigner en ce nom-là? Et voici, vous avez rempli Jérusalem de votre enseignement, et vous voulez faire retomber sur nous le sang de cet homme!

saying, `Did not we strictly command you not to teach in this name? and lo, ye have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and ye intend to bring upon us the blood of this man.'

29 P ierre et les apôtres répondirent: Il faut obéir à Dieu plutôt qu'aux hommes.

And Peter and the apostles answering, said, `To obey God it behoveth, rather than men;

30 L e Dieu de nos pères a ressuscité Jésus, que vous avez tué, en le pendant au bois.

and the God of our fathers did raise up Jesus, whom ye slew, having hanged upon a tree;

31 D ieu l'a élevé par sa droite comme Prince et Sauveur, pour donner à Israël la repentance et le pardon des péchés.

this one God, a Prince and a Saviour, hath exalted with His right hand, to give reformation to Israel, and forgiveness of sins;

32 N ous sommes témoins de ces choses, de même que le Saint Esprit, que Dieu a donné à ceux qui lui obéissent.

and we are His witnesses of these sayings, and the Holy Spirit also, whom God gave to those obeying him.'

33 F urieux de ces paroles, ils voulaient les faire mourir.

And they having heard, were cut, and were taking counsel to slay them,

34 M ais un pharisien, nommé Gamaliel, docteur de la loi, estimé de tout le peuple, se leva dans le sanhédrin, et ordonna de faire sortir un instant les apôtres.

but a certain one, having risen up in the sanhedrim -- a Pharisee, by name Gamaliel, a teacher of law honoured by all the people -- commanded to put the apostles forth a little,

35 P uis il leur dit: Hommes Israélites, prenez garde à ce que vous allez faire à l'égard de ces gens.

and said unto them, `Men, Israelites, take heed to yourselves about these men, what ye are about to do,

36 C ar, il n'y a pas longtemps que parut Theudas, qui se donnait pour quelque chose, et auquel se rallièrent environ quatre cents hommes: il fut tué, et tous ceux qui l'avaient suivi furent mis en déroute et réduits à rien.

for before these days rose up Theudas, saying, that himself was some one, to whom a number of men did join themselves, as it were four hundred, who was slain, and all, as many as were obeying him, were scattered, and came to nought.

37 A près lui, parut Judas le Galiléen, à l'époque du recensement, et il attira du monde à son parti: il périt aussi, et tous ceux qui l'avaient suivi furent dispersés.

`After this one rose up, Judas the Galilean, in the days of the enrollment, and drew away much people after him, and that one perished, and all, as many as were obeying him, were scattered;

38 E t maintenant, je vous le dis ne vous occupez plus de ces hommes, et laissez-les aller. Si cette entreprise ou cette oeuvre vient des hommes, elle se détruira;

and now I say to you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone, because if this counsel or this work may be of men, it will be overthrown,

39 m ais si elle vient de Dieu, vous ne pourrez la détruire. Ne courez pas le risque d'avoir combattu contre Dieu.

and if it be of God, ye are not able to overthrow it, lest perhaps also ye be found fighting against God.'

40 I ls se rangèrent à son avis. Et ayant appelé les apôtres, ils les firent battre de verges, ils leur défendirent de parler au nom de Jésus, et ils les relâchèrent.

And to him they agreed, and having called near the apostles, having beaten, they commanded not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go;

41 L es apôtres se retirèrent de devant le sanhédrin, joyeux d'avoir été jugés dignes de subir des outrages pour le nom de Jésus.

they, indeed, then, departed from the presence of the sanhedrim, rejoicing that for his name they were counted worthy to suffer dishonour,

42 E t chaque jour, dans le temple et dans les maisons, ils ne cessaient d'enseigner, et d'annoncer la bonne nouvelle de Jésus Christ.

every day also in the temple, and in every house, they were not ceasing teaching and proclaiming good news -- Jesus the Christ.
