And the Philistines gather their camps to battle, and are gathered to Shochoh, which to Judah, and encamp between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephes-Dammim;

2 S aül et les hommes d'Israël se rassemblèrent aussi; ils campèrent dans la vallée des térébinthes, et ils se mirent en ordre de bataille contre les Philistins.

and Saul and the men of Israel have been gathered, and encamp by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array to meet the Philistines.

3 L es Philistins étaient vers la montagne d'un côté, et Israël était vers la montagne de l'autre côté: la vallée les séparait.

And the Philistines are standing on the mountain on this side, and the Israelites are standing on the mountain on that side, and the valley between them.

4 U n homme sortit alors du camp des Philistins et s'avança entre les deux armées. Il se nommait Goliath, il était de Gath, et il avait une taille de six coudées et un empan.

And there goeth out a man of the duellists from the camps of the Philistines, Goliath his name, from Gath; his height six cubits and a span,

5 S ur sa tête était un casque d'airain, et il portait une cuirasse à écailles du poids de cinq mille sicles d'airain.

and a helmet of brass on his head, and a scaled coat of mail he clothed, and the weight of the coat of mail five thousand shekels of brass,

6 I l avait aux jambes une armure d'airain, et un javelot d'airain entre les épaules.

and a frontlet of brass on his feet, and a javelin of brass between his shoulders,

7 L e bois de sa lance était comme une ensouple de tisserand, et la lance pesait six cents sicles de fer. Celui qui portait son bouclier marchait devant lui.

and the wood of his spear like a beam of weavers', and the flame of his spear six hundred shekels of iron, and the bearer of the buckler is going before him.

8 L e Philistin s'arrêta; et, s'adressant aux troupes d'Israël rangées en bataille, il leur cria: Pourquoi sortez-vous pour vous ranger en bataille? Ne suis-je pas le Philistin, et n'êtes-vous pas des esclaves de Saül? Choisissez un homme qui descende contre moi!

And he standeth and calleth unto the ranks of Israel, and saith to them, `Why are ye come out to set in array the battle? not I the Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose for you a man, and let him come down unto me;

9 S 'il peut me battre et qu'il me tue, nous vous serons assujettis; mais si je l'emporte sur lui et que je le tue, vous nous serez assujettis et vous nous servirez.

if he be able to fight with me, and have smitten me, then we have been to you for servants; and if I am able for him, and have smitten him, then ye have been to us for servants, and have served us.'

10 L e Philistin dit encore: Je jette en ce jour un défi à l'armée d'Israël! Donnez-moi un homme, et nous nous battrons ensemble.

And the Philistine saith, `I have reproached the ranks of Israel this day; give to me a man, and we fight together.'

11 S aül et tout Israël entendirent ces paroles du Philistin, et ils furent effrayés et saisis d'une grande crainte.

And Saul heareth -- and all Israel -- these words of the Philistine, and they are broken down and greatly afraid.

12 O r David était fils de cet Éphratien de Bethléhem de Juda, nommé Isaï, qui avait huit fils, et qui, du temps de Saül, était vieux, avancé en âge.

And David son of this Ephrathite of Beth-Lehem-Judah, whose name Jesse, and he hath eight sons, and the man in the days of Saul hath become aged among men;

13 L es trois fils aînés d'Isaï avaient suivi Saül à la guerre; le premier-né de ses trois fils qui étaient partis pour la guerre s'appelait Éliab, le second Abinadab, et le troisième Schamma.

and the three eldest sons of Jesse go, they have gone after Saul to battle; and the name of his three sons who have gone into battle Eliab the first-born, and his second Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

14 D avid était le plus jeune. Et lorsque les trois aînés eurent suivi Saül,

And David is the youngest, and the three eldest have gone after Saul,

15 D avid s'en alla de chez Saül et revint à Bethléhem pour faire paître les brebis de son père.

and David is going and returning from Saul, to feed the flock of his father at Beth-Lehem.

16 L e Philistin s'avançait matin et soir, et il se présenta pendant quarante jours.

And the Philistine draweth nigh, morning and evening, and stationeth himself forty days.

17 I saï dit à David, son fils: Prends pour tes frères cet épha de grain rôti et ces dix pains, et cours au camp vers tes frères;

And Jesse saith to David his son, `Take, I pray thee, to thy brethren, an ephah of this roasted, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;

18 p orte aussi ces dix fromages au chef de leur millier. Tu verras si tes frères se portent bien, et tu m'en donneras des nouvelles sûres.

and these ten cuttings of the cheese thou dost take in to the head of the thousand, and thy brethren thou dost inspect for welfare, and their pledge dost receive.'

19 I ls sont avec Saül et tous les hommes d'Israël dans la vallée des térébinthes, faisant la guerre aux Philistins.

And Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

20 D avid se leva de bon matin. Il laissa les brebis à un gardien, prit sa charge, et partit, comme Isaï le lui avait ordonné. Lorsqu'il arriva au camp, l'armée était en marche pour se ranger en bataille et poussait des cris de guerre.

And David riseth early in the morning, and leaveth the flock to a keeper, and lifteth up, and goeth, as Jesse commanded him, and he cometh in to the path, and to the force which is going out unto the rank, and they have shouted for battle;

21 I sraël et les Philistins se formèrent en bataille, armée contre armée.

and Israel and the Philistines set in array rank to meet rank.

22 D avid remit les objets qu'il portait entre les mains du gardien des bagages, et courut vers les rangs de l'armée. Aussitôt arrivé, il demanda à ses frères comment ils se portaient.

And David letteth down the goods from off him on the hand of a keeper of the goods, and runneth into the rank, and cometh and asketh of his brethren of welfare.

23 T andis qu'il parlait avec eux, voici, le Philistin de Gath, nommé Goliath, s'avança entre les deux armées, hors des rangs des Philistins. Il tint les mêmes discours que précédemment, et David les entendit.

And he is speaking with them, and lo, a man of the duellists is coming up, Goliath the Philistine his name, of Gath, out of the ranks of the Philistines, and he speaketh according to those words, and David heareth;

24 A la vue de cet homme, tous ceux d'Israël s'enfuirent devant lui et furent saisis d'une grande crainte.

and all the men of Israel when they see the man flee from his presence, and are greatly afraid.

25 C hacun disait: Avez-vous vu s'avancer cet homme? C'est pour jeter à Israël un défi qu'il s'est avancé! Si quelqu'un le tue, le roi le comblera de richesses, il lui donnera sa fille, et il affranchira la maison de son père en Israël.

And the men of Israel say, `Have ye seen this man who is coming up? for, to reproach Israel he is coming up, and it hath been -- the man who smiteth him, the king doth enrich him with great riches, and his daughter he doth give to him, and his father's house doth make free in Israel.'

26 D avid dit aux hommes qui se trouvaient près de lui: Que fera-t-on à celui qui tuera ce Philistin, et qui ôtera l'opprobre de dessus Israël? Qui est donc ce Philistin, cet incirconcis, pour insulter l'armée du Dieu vivant?

And David speaketh unto the men who are standing by him, saying, `What is done to the man who smiteth this Philistine, and hath turned aside reproach from Israel? for who this uncircumcised Philistine that he hath reproached the ranks of the living God?'

27 L e peuple, répétant les mêmes choses, lui dit: C'est ainsi que l'on fera à celui qui le tuera.

And the people speak to him according to this word, saying, `Thus it is done to the man who smiteth him.'

28 É liab, son frère aîné, qui l'avait entendu parler à ces hommes, fut enflammé de colère contre David. Et il dit: Pourquoi es-tu descendu, et à qui as-tu laissé ce peu de brebis dans le désert? Je connais ton orgueil et la malice de ton coeur. C'est pour voir la bataille que tu es descendu.

And Eliab, his eldest brother, heareth when he speaketh unto the men, and the anger of Eliab burneth against David, and he saith, `Why this -- thou hast come down! and to whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I have known thy pride, and the evil of thy heart -- for, to see the battle thou hast come down.'

29 D avid répondit: Qu'ai-je donc fait? ne puis-je pas parler ainsi?

And David saith, `What have I done now? is it not a word?'

30 E t il se détourna de lui pour s'adresser à un autre, et fit les mêmes questions. Le peuple lui répondit comme la première fois.

And he turneth round from him unto another, and saith according to this word, and the people return him word as the first word.

31 L orsqu'on eut entendu les paroles prononcées par David, on les répéta devant Saül, qui le fit chercher.

And the words which David hath spoken are heard, and they declare before Saul, and he receiveth him;

32 D avid dit à Saül: Que personne ne se décourage à cause de ce Philistin! Ton serviteur ira se battre avec lui.

and David saith unto Saul, `Let no man's heart fall because of him, thy servant doth go, and hath fought with this Philistine.'

33 S aül dit à David: Tu ne peux pas aller te battre avec ce Philistin, car tu es un enfant, et il est un homme de guerre dès sa jeunesse.

And Saul saith unto David, `Thou art not able to go unto this Philistine, to fight with him, for a youth thou, and he a man of war from his youth.'

34 D avid dit à Saül: Ton serviteur faisait paître les brebis de son père. Et quand un lion ou un ours venait en enlever une du troupeau,

And David saith unto Saul, `A shepherd hath thy servant been to his father among the sheep, and the lion hath come -- and the bear -- and hath taken away a sheep out of the drove,

35 j e courais après lui, je le frappais, et j'arrachais la brebis de sa gueule. S'il se dressait contre moi, je le saisissais par la gorge, je le frappais, et je le tuais.

and I have gone out after him, and smitten him, and delivered out of his mouth, and he riseth against me, and I have taken hold on his beard, and smitten him, and put him to death.

36 C 'est ainsi que ton serviteur a terrassé le lion et l'ours, et il en sera du Philistin, de cet incirconcis, comme de l'un d'eux, car il a insulté l'armée du Dieu vivant.

Both the lion and the bear hath thy servant smitten, and this uncircumcised Philistine hath been as one of them, for he hath reproached the ranks of the living God.'

37 D avid dit encore: L'Éternel, qui m'a délivré de la griffe du lion et de la patte de l'ours, me délivrera aussi de la main de ce Philistin. Et Saül dit à David: Va, et que l'Éternel soit avec toi!

And David saith, `Jehovah, who delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, He doth deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.' And Saul saith unto David, `Go, and Jehovah is with thee.'

38 S aül fit mettre ses vêtements à David, il plaça sur sa tête un casque d'airain, et le revêtit d'une cuirasse.

And Saul clotheth David with his long robe, and hath put a helmet of brass on his head, and doth clothe him with a coat of mail.

39 D avid ceignit l'épée de Saül par-dessus ses habits, et voulut marcher, car il n'avait pas encore essayé. Mais il dit à Saül: Je ne puis pas marcher avec cette armure, je n'y suis pas accoutumé. Et il s'en débarrassa.

And David girded his sword above his long robe, and beginneth to go, for he hath not tried; and David saith unto Saul, `I am not able to go with these, for I had not tried;' and David turneth them aside from off him.

40 I l prit en main son bâton, choisit dans le torrent cinq pierres polies, et les mit dans sa gibecière de berger et dans sa poche. Puis, sa fronde à la main, il s'avança contre le Philistin.

And he taketh his staff in his hand, and chooseth for him five smooth stones from the brook, and putteth them in the shepherds' habiliments that he hath, even in the scrip, and his sling in his hand, and he draweth nigh unto the Philistine.

41 L e Philistin s'approcha peu à peu de David, et l'homme qui portait son bouclier marchait devant lui.

And the Philistine goeth on, going and drawing near unto David, and the man bearing the buckler before him,

42 L e Philistin regarda, et lorsqu'il aperçut David, il le méprisa, ne voyant en lui qu'un enfant, blond et d'une belle figure.

and the Philistine looketh attentively, and seeth David, and despiseth him, for he was a youth, and ruddy, with a fair appearance.

43 L e Philistin dit à David: Suis-je un chien, pour que tu viennes à moi avec des bâtons? Et, après l'avoir maudit par ses dieux,

And the Philistine saith unto David, `Am I a dog that thou art coming unto me with staves?' and the Philistine revileth David by his gods,

44 i l ajouta: Viens vers moi, et je donnerai ta chair aux oiseaux du ciel et aux bêtes des champs.

and the Philistine saith unto David, `Come unto me, and I give thy flesh to the fowl of the heavens, and to the beast of the field.'

45 D avid dit au Philistin: Tu marches contre moi avec l'épée, la lance et le javelot; et moi, je marche contre toi au nom de l'Éternel des armées, du Dieu de l'armée d'Israël, que tu as insultée.

And David saith unto the Philistine, `Thou art coming unto me with sword, and with spear, and with buckler, and I am coming unto thee in the name of Jehovah of Hosts, God of the ranks of Israel, which thou hast reproached.

46 A ujourd'hui l'Éternel te livrera entre mes mains, je t'abattrai et je te couperai la tête; aujourd'hui je donnerai les cadavres du camp des Philistins aux oiseaux du ciel et aux animaux de la terre. Et toute la terre saura qu'Israël a un Dieu.

This day doth Jehovah shut thee up into my hand -- and I have smitten thee, and turned aside thy head from off thee, and given the carcase of the camp of the Philistines this day to the fowl of the heavens, and to the beast of the earth, and all the earth do know that God is for Israel.

47 E t toute cette multitude saura que ce n'est ni par l'épée ni par la lance que l'Éternel sauve. Car la victoire appartient à l'Éternel. Et il vous livre entre nos mains.

and all this assembly do know that not by sword and by spear doth Jehovah save, that the battle Jehovah's, and He hath given you into our hand.'

48 A ussitôt que le Philistin se mit en mouvement pour marcher au-devant de David, David courut sur le champ de bataille à la rencontre du Philistin.

And it hath come to pass, that the Philistine hath risen, and goeth, and draweth near to meet David, and David hasteth and runneth to the rank to meet the Philistine,

49 I l mit la main dans sa gibecière, y prit une pierre, et la lança avec sa fronde; il frappa le Philistin au front, et la pierre s'enfonça dans le front du Philistin, qui tomba le visage contre terre.

and David putteth forth his hand unto the vessel, and taketh thence a stone, and slingeth, and smiteth the Philistine on his forehead, and the stone sinketh into his forehead, and he falleth on his face to the earth.

50 A insi, avec une fronde et une pierre, David fut plus fort que le Philistin; il le terrassa et lui ôta la vie, sans avoir d'épée à la main.

And David is stronger than the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smiteth the Philistine, and putteth him to death, and there is no sword in the hand of David,

51 I l courut, s'arrêta près du Philistin, se saisit de son épée qu'il tira du fourreau, le tua et lui coupa la tête. Les Philistins, voyant que leur héros était mort, prirent la fuite.

and David runneth and standeth over the Philistine, and taketh his sword, and draweth it out of its sheath, and putteth him to death, and cutteth off with it his head; and the Philistines see that their hero dead, and flee.

52 E t les hommes d'Israël et de Juda poussèrent des cris, et allèrent à la poursuite des Philistins jusque dans la vallée et jusqu'aux portes d'Ékron. Les Philistins blessés à mort tombèrent dans le chemin de Schaaraïm jusqu'à Gath et jusqu'à Ékron.

And the men of Israel rise -- also Judah -- and shout, and pursue the Philistines till thou enter the valley, and unto the gates of Ekron, and the wounded of the Philistines fall in the way of Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron,

53 E t les enfants d'Israël revinrent de la poursuite des Philistins, et pillèrent leur camp.

and the sons of Israel turn back from burning after the Philistines, and spoil their camps.

54 D avid prit la tête du Philistin et la porta à Jérusalem, et il mit dans sa tente les armes du Philistin.

And David taketh the head of the Philistine, and bringeth it in to Jerusalem, and his weapons he hath put in his own tent.

55 L orsque Saül avait vu David marcher à la rencontre du Philistin, il avait dit à Abner, chef de l'armée: De qui ce jeune homme est-il fils, Abner? Abner répondit: Aussi vrai que ton âme est vivante, ô roi! je l'ignore.

And when Saul seeth David going out to meet the Philistine, he hath said unto Abner, head of the host, `Whose son this -- the youth, Abner?' and Abner saith, `Thy soul liveth, O king, I have not known.'

56 I nforme-toi donc de qui ce jeune homme est fils, dit le roi.

And the king saith, `Ask thou whose son this -- the young man.'

57 E t quand David fut de retour après avoir tué le Philistin, Abner le prit et le mena devant Saül. David avait à la main la tête du Philistin.

And when David turneth back from smiting the Philistine, then Abner taketh him and bringeth him in before Saul, and the head of the Philistine in his hand;

58 S aül lui dit: De qui es-tu fils, jeune homme? Et David répondit: Je suis fils de ton serviteur Isaï, Bethléhémite.

and Saul saith unto him, `Whose son thou, O youth?' and David saith, `Son of thy servant Jesse, the Beth-Lehemite.'
