1 E n ce temps-là parut Jean Baptiste, prêchant dans le désert de Judée.

And in those days cometh John the Baptist, proclaiming in the wilderness of Judea,

2 I l disait: Repentez-vous, car le royaume des cieux est proche.

and saying, `Reform, for come nigh hath the reign of the heavens,'

3 J ean est celui qui avait été annoncé par Ésaïe, le prophète, lorsqu'il dit: C'est ici la voix de celui qui crie dans le désert: Préparez le chemin du Seigneur, Aplanissez ses sentiers.

for this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, `A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, straight make ye His paths.'

4 J ean avait un vêtement de poils de chameau, et une ceinture de cuir autour des reins. Il se nourrissait de sauterelles et de miel sauvage.

And this John had his clothing of camel's hair, and a girdle of skin round his loins, and his nourishment was locusts and honey of the field.

5 L es habitants de Jérusalem, de toute la Judée et de tout le pays des environs du Jourdain, se rendaient auprès de lui;

Then were going forth unto him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about the Jordan,

6 e t, confessant leurs péchés, ils se faisaient baptiser par lui dans le fleuve du Jourdain.

and they were baptized in the Jordan by him, confessing their sins.

7 M ais, voyant venir à son baptême beaucoup de pharisiens et de sadducéens, il leur dit: Races de vipères, qui vous a appris à fuir la colère à venir?

And having seen many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming about his baptism, he said to them, `Brood of vipers! who did shew you to flee from the coming wrath?

8 P roduisez donc du fruit digne de la repentance,

bear, therefore, fruits worthy of the reformation,

9 e t ne prétendez pas dire en vous-mêmes: Nous avons Abraham pour père! Car je vous déclare que de ces pierres-ci Dieu peut susciter des enfants à Abraham.

and do not think to say in yourselves, A father we have -- Abraham, for I say to you, that God is able out of these stones to raise children to Abraham,

10 D éjà la cognée est mise à la racine des arbres: tout arbre donc qui ne produit pas de bons fruits sera coupé et jeté au feu.

and now also, the axe unto the root of the trees is laid, every tree therefore not bearing good fruit is hewn down, and to fire is cast.

11 M oi, je vous baptise d'eau, pour vous amener à la repentance; mais celui qui vient après moi est plus puissant que moi, et je ne suis pas digne de porter ses souliers. Lui, il vous baptisera du Saint Esprit et de feu.

`I indeed do baptize you with water to reformation, but he who after me is coming is mightier than I, of whom I am not worthy to bear the sandals, he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire,

12 I l a son van à la main; il nettoiera son aire, et il amassera son blé dans le grenier, mais il brûlera la paille dans un feu qui ne s'éteint point.

whose fan in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and will gather his wheat to the storehouse, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.'

13 A lors Jésus vint de la Galilée au Jourdain vers Jean, pour être baptisé par lui.

Then cometh Jesus from Galilee upon the Jordan, unto John to be baptized by him,

14 M ais Jean s'y opposait, en disant: C'est moi qui ai besoin d'être baptisé par toi, et tu viens à moi!

but John was forbidding him, saying, `I have need by thee to be baptized -- and thou dost come unto me!'

15 J ésus lui répondit: Laisse faire maintenant, car il est convenable que nous accomplissions ainsi tout ce qui est juste. Et Jean ne lui résista plus.

But Jesus answering said to him, `Suffer now, for thus it is becoming to us to fulfill all righteousness,' then he doth suffer him.

16 D ès que Jésus eut été baptisé, il sortit de l'eau. Et voici, les cieux s'ouvrirent, et il vit l'Esprit de Dieu descendre comme une colombe et venir sur lui.

And having been baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water, and lo, opened to him were the heavens, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him,

17 E t voici, une voix fit entendre des cieux ces paroles: Celui-ci est mon Fils bien-aimé, en qui j'ai mis toute mon affection.

and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, `This is My Son -- the Beloved, in whom I did delight.'
