1 E n aquellos días vino Juan el Bautista predicando en el desierto de Judea,

And in those days cometh John the Baptist, proclaiming in the wilderness of Judea,

2 y diciendo: Arrepentíos, porque el reino de los cielos se ha acercado.

and saying, `Reform, for come nigh hath the reign of the heavens,'

3 P ues éste es aquel de quien habló el profeta Isaías, cuando dijo: Voz del que clama en el desierto: Preparad el camino del Señor, Enderezad sus sendas.

for this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, `A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, straight make ye His paths.'

4 Y Juan estaba vestido de pelo de camello, y tenía un cinto de cuero alrededor de sus lomos; y su comida era langostas y miel silvestre.

And this John had his clothing of camel's hair, and a girdle of skin round his loins, and his nourishment was locusts and honey of the field.

5 Y salía a él Jerusalén, y toda Judea, y toda la provincia de alrededor del Jordán,

Then were going forth unto him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the region round about the Jordan,

6 y eran bautizados por él en el Jordán, confesando sus pecados.

and they were baptized in the Jordan by him, confessing their sins.

7 A l ver él que muchos de los fariseos y de los saduceos venían a su bautismo, les decía:!! Generación de víboras! ¿Quién os enseñó a huir de la ira venidera?

And having seen many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming about his baptism, he said to them, `Brood of vipers! who did shew you to flee from the coming wrath?

8 H aced, pues, frutos dignos de arrepentimiento,

bear, therefore, fruits worthy of the reformation,

9 y no penséis decir dentro de vosotros mismos: A Abraham tenemos por padre; porque yo os digo que Dios puede levantar hijos a Abraham aun de estas piedras.

and do not think to say in yourselves, A father we have -- Abraham, for I say to you, that God is able out of these stones to raise children to Abraham,

10 Y ya también el hacha está puesta a la raíz de los árboles; por tanto, todo árbol que no da buen fruto es cortado y echado en el fuego.

and now also, the axe unto the root of the trees is laid, every tree therefore not bearing good fruit is hewn down, and to fire is cast.

11 Y o a la verdad os bautizo en agua para arrepentimiento; pero el que viene tras mí, cuyo calzado yo no soy digno de llevar, es más poderoso que yo; él os bautizará en Espíritu Santo y fuego.

`I indeed do baptize you with water to reformation, but he who after me is coming is mightier than I, of whom I am not worthy to bear the sandals, he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire,

12 S u aventador está en su mano, y limpiará su era; y recogerá su trigo en el granero, y quemará la paja en fuego que nunca se apagará. El bautismo de Jesús (Mr. 1. 9-11; Lc. 3. 21-22)

whose fan in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and will gather his wheat to the storehouse, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.'

13 E ntonces Jesús vino de Galilea a Juan al Jordán, para ser bautizado por él.

Then cometh Jesus from Galilee upon the Jordan, unto John to be baptized by him,

14 M as Juan se le oponía, diciendo: Yo necesito ser bautizado por ti, ¿y tú vienes a mí?

but John was forbidding him, saying, `I have need by thee to be baptized -- and thou dost come unto me!'

15 P ero Jesús le respondió: Deja ahora, porque así conviene que cumplamos toda justicia. Entonces le dejó.

But Jesus answering said to him, `Suffer now, for thus it is becoming to us to fulfill all righteousness,' then he doth suffer him.

16 Y Jesús, después que fue bautizado, subió luego del agua; y he aquí los cielos le fueron abiertos, y vio al Espíritu de Dios que descendía como paloma, y venía sobre él.

And having been baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water, and lo, opened to him were the heavens, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him,

17 Y hubo una voz de los cielos, que decía: Este es mi Hijo amado, en quien tengo complacencia.

and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, `This is My Son -- the Beloved, in whom I did delight.'
