1 R espondió Elifaz temanita, y dijo:

And Eliphaz the Temanite answereth and saith: --

2 ¿ Proferirá el sabio vana sabiduría, Y llenará su vientre de viento solano?

Doth a wise man answer vain knowledge? And fill an east wind his belly?

3 ¿ Disputará con palabras inútiles, Y con razones sin provecho?

To reason with a word not useful? And speeches -- no profit in them?

4 T ú también disipas el temor, Y menoscabas la oración delante de Dios.

Yea, thou dost make reverence void, And dost diminish meditation before God.

5 P orque tu boca declaró tu iniquidad, Pues has escogido el hablar de los astutos.

For thy mouth teacheth thine iniquity, And thou chooseth the tongue of the subtile.

6 T u boca te condenará, y no yo; Y tus labios testificarán contra ti.

Thy mouth declareth thee wicked, and not I, And thy lips testify against thee.

7 ¿ Naciste tú primero que Adán? ¿O fuiste formado antes que los collados?

The first man art thou born? And before the heights wast thou formed?

8 ¿ Oíste tú el secreto de Dios, Y está limitada a ti la sabiduría?

Of the secret counsel of God dost thou hear? And withdrawest thou unto thee wisdom?

9 ¿ Qué sabes tú que no sepamos? ¿Qué entiendes tú que no se halle en nosotros?

What hast thou known, and we know not? Understandest thou -- and it is not with us?

10 C abezas canas y hombres muy ancianos hay entre nosotros, Mucho más avanzados en días que tu padre.

Both the gray-headed And the very aged among us -- Greater than thy father days.

11 ¿ En tan poco tienes las consolaciones de Dios, Y las palabras que con dulzura se te dicen?

Too few for thee are the comforts of God? And a gentle word with thee,

12 ¿ Por qué tu corazón te aleja, Y por qué guiñan tus ojos,

What -- doth thine heart take thee away? And what -- are thine eyes high?

13 P ara que contra Dios vuelvas tu espíritu, Y saques tales palabras de tu boca?

For thou turnest against God thy spirit? And hast brought out words from thy mouth:

14 ¿ Qué cosa es el hombre para que sea limpio, Y para que se justifique el nacido de mujer?

What man that he is pure, And that he is righteous, one born of woman?

15 H e aquí, en sus santos no confía, Y ni aun los cielos son limpios delante de sus ojos;

Lo, in His holy ones He putteth no credence, And the heavens have not been pure in His eyes.

16 ¿ Cuánto menos el hombre abominable y vil, Que bebe la iniquidad como agua?

Also -- surely abominable and filthy Is man drinking as water perverseness.

17 E scúchame; yo te mostraré, Y te contaré lo que he visto;

I shew thee -- hearken to me -- And this I have seen and declare:

18 L o que los sabios nos contaron De sus padres, y no lo encubrieron;

Which the wise declare -- And have not hid -- from their fathers.

19 A quienes únicamente fue dada la tierra, Y no pasó extraño por en medio de ellos.

To them alone was the land given, And a stranger passed not over into their midst:

20 T odos sus días, el impío es atormentado de dolor, Y el número de sus años está escondido para el violento.

`All days of the wicked he is paining himself, And few years have been laid up for the terrible one.

21 E struendos espantosos hay en sus oídos; En la prosperidad el asolador vendrá sobre él.

A fearful voice in his ears, In peace doth a destroyer come to him.

22 E l no cree que volverá de las tinieblas, Y descubierto está para la espada.

He believeth not to return from darkness, And watched he for the sword.

23 V aga alrededor tras el pan, diciendo: ¿En dónde está? Sabe que le está preparado día de tinieblas.

He is wandering for bread -- `Where it?' He hath known that ready at his hand Is a day of darkness.

24 T ribulación y angustia le turbarán, Y se esforzarán contra él como un rey dispuesto para la batalla,

Terrify him do adversity and distress, They prevail over him As a king ready for a boaster.

25 P or cuanto él extendió su mano contra Dios, Y se portó con soberbia contra el Todopoderoso.

For he stretched out against God his hand, And against the Mighty he maketh himself mighty.

26 C orrió contra él con cuello erguido, Con la espesa barrera de sus escudos.

He runneth unto Him with a neck, With thick bosses of his shields.

27 P orque la gordura cubrió su rostro, E hizo pliegues sobre sus ijares;

For he hath covered his face with his fat, And maketh vigour over confidence.

28 Y habitó las ciudades asoladas, Las casas inhabitadas, Que estaban en ruinas.

And he inhabiteth cities cut off, houses not dwelt in, That have been ready to become heaps.

29 N o prosperará, ni durarán sus riquezas, Ni extenderá por la tierra su hermosura.

He is not rich, nor doth his wealth rise, Nor doth he stretch out on earth their continuance.

30 N o escapará de las tinieblas; La llama secará sus ramas, Y con el aliento de su boca perecerá.

He turneth not aside from darkness, His tender branch doth a flame dry up, And he turneth aside at the breath of His mouth!

31 N o confíe el iluso en la vanidad, Porque ella será su recompensa.

Let him not put credence in vanity, He hath been deceived, For vanity is his recompence.

32 E l será cortado antes de su tiempo, Y sus renuevos no reverdecerán.

Not in his day is it completed, And his bending branch is not green.

33 P erderá su agraz como la vid, Y derramará su flor como el olivo.

He shaketh off as a vine his unripe fruit, And casteth off as an olive his blossom.

34 P orque la congregación de los impíos será asolada, Y fuego consumirá las tiendas de soborno.

For the company of the profane gloomy, And fire hath consumed tents of bribery.

35 C oncibieron dolor, dieron a luz iniquidad, Y en sus entrañas traman engaño.

To conceive misery, and to bear iniquity, Even their heart doth prepare deceit.
