1 R oboam se rendit à Sichem, car tout Israël était venu à Sichem pour le faire roi.

And Rehoboam goeth to Shechem, for Shechem have all Israel come to cause him to reign.

2 L orsque Jéroboam, fils de Nebath, eut des nouvelles, il était en Égypte, où il s'était enfui loin du roi Salomon, et il revint d'Égypte.

And it cometh to pass, at Jeroboam son of Nebat's -- who in Egypt because he hath fled from the face of Solomon the king -- hearing, that Jeroboam turneth back out of Egypt;

3 O n l'envoya appeler. Alors Jéroboam et tout Israël vinrent vers Roboam et lui parlèrent ainsi:

and they send and call for him, and Jeroboam cometh in, and all Israel, and speak unto Rehoboam, saying,

4 T on père a rendu notre joug dur; maintenant allège cette rude servitude et le joug pesant que nous a imposé ton père. Et nous te servirons.

`Thy father made our yoke sharp, and now, make light of the sharp service of thy father, and of his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we serve thee.'

5 I l leur dit: Revenez vers moi dans trois jours. Et le peuple s'en alla.

And he saith unto them, `Yet three days -- then return ye unto me;' and the people go.

6 L e roi Roboam consulta les vieillards qui avaient été auprès de Salomon, son père, pendant sa vie, et il dit: Que conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple?

And king Rehoboam consulteth with the aged men who have been standing before Solomon his father in his being alive, saying, `How are ye counselling to answer this people?'

7 E t voici ce qu'ils lui dirent: Si tu es bon envers ce peuple, si tu les reçois favorablement, et si tu leur parles avec bienveillance, ils seront pour toujours tes serviteurs.

And they speak unto him, saying, `If thou dost become good to this people, and hast been pleased with them, and spoken unto them good words, then they have been to thee servants all the days.'

8 M ais Roboam laissa le conseil que lui donnaient les vieillards, et il consulta les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui et qui l'entouraient.

And he forsaketh the counsel of the aged men that they counselled him, and consulteth with the lads who have grown up with him, those standing before him,

9 I l leur dit: Que conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple qui me tient ce langage: Allège le joug que nous a imposé ton père?

and he saith unto them, `What are ye counselling, and we answer this people that have spoken unto me, saying, Make light of the yoke that thy father put upon us?'

10 E t voici ce que lui dirent les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui: Tu parleras ainsi à ce peuple qui t'a tenu ce langage: Ton père a rendu notre joug pesant, et toi, allège-le-nous! tu leur parleras ainsi: Mon petit doigt est plus gros que les reins de mon père.

And the lads who have grown up with him, speak with him, saying, `Thus dost thou say to the people who have spoken unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, and thou, make light of our yoke; thus dost thou say unto them, My little finger is thicker than the loins of my father;

11 M aintenant, mon père vous a chargés d'un joug pesant, et moi je vous le rendrai plus pesant; mon père vous a châtiés avec des fouets, et moi je vous châtierai avec des scorpions.

and now, my father laid on you a heavy yoke, and I -- I add unto your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- with scorpions.'

12 J éroboam et tout le peuple vinrent à Roboam le troisième jour, suivant ce qu'avait dit le roi: Revenez vers moi dans trois jours.

And Jeroboam cometh in, and all the people, unto Rehoboam on the third day, as the king spake, saying, `Return unto me on the third day.'

13 L e roi leur répondit durement. Le roi Roboam laissa le conseil des vieillards,

And the king answereth them sharply, and king Rehoboam forsaketh the counsel of the aged men,

14 e t leur parla ainsi d'après le conseil des jeunes gens: Mon père a rendu votre joug pesant, et moi je le rendrai plus pesant; mon père vous a châtiés avec des fouets, et moi je vous châtierai avec des scorpions.

and speaketh unto them according to the counsel of the lads, saying, `My father made your yoke heavy, and I -- I add unto it; my father chastised you with whips, and I -- with scorpions.'

15 A insi le roi n'écouta point le peuple; car cela fut dirigé par Dieu, en vue de l'accomplissement de la parole que l'Éternel avait dite par Achija de Silo à Jéroboam, fils de Nebath.

And the king hath not hearkened unto the people, for the revolution hath been from God, for the sake of Jehovah's establishing His word that He spake by the hand of Abijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam son of Nebat.

16 L orsque tout Israël vit que le roi ne l'écoutait pas, le peuple répondit au roi: Quelle part avons-nous avec David? Nous n'avons point d'héritage avec le fils d'Isaï! A tes tentes, Israël! Maintenant, pourvois à ta maison, David! Et tout Israël s'en alla dans ses tentes.

And all Israel have seen that the king hath not hearkened to them, and the people send back the king, saying, `What portion have we in David? yea, there is no inheritance in a son of Jesse; each to thy tents, O Israel; now, see thy house -- David,' and all Israel go to their tents.

17 L es enfants d'Israël qui habitaient les villes de Juda furent les seuls sur qui régna Roboam.

As to the sons of Israel who are dwelling in the cities of Judah -- Rehoboam reigneth over them.

18 A lors le roi Roboam envoya Hadoram, qui était préposé aux impôts. Mais Hadoram fut lapidé par les enfants d'Israël, et il mourut. Et le roi Roboam se hâta de monter sur un char, pour s'enfuir à Jérusalem.

And king Rehoboam sendeth Hadoram, who over the tribute, and the sons of Israel cast at him stones, and he dieth; and king Rehoboam hath strengthened himself to go up into a chariot to flee to Jerusalem;

19 C 'est ainsi qu'Israël s'est détaché de la maison de David jusqu'à ce jour.

and Israel transgress against the house of David unto this day.
