1 Q uelques jours après, Jésus revint à Capernaüm. On apprit qu'il était à la maison,

And again he entered into Capernaum, after days, and it was heard that he is in the house,

2 e t il s'assembla un si grand nombre de personnes que l'espace devant la porte ne pouvait plus les contenir. Il leur annonçait la parole.

and immediately many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door, and he was speaking to them the word.

3 D es gens vinrent à lui, amenant un paralytique porté par quatre hommes.

And they come unto him, bringing a paralytic, borne by four,

4 C omme ils ne pouvaient l'aborder, à cause de la foule, ils découvrirent le toit de la maison où il était, et ils descendirent par cette ouverture le lit sur lequel le paralytique était couché.

and not being able to come near to him because of the multitude, they uncovered the roof where he was, and, having broken up, they let down the couch on which the paralytic was lying,

5 J ésus, voyant leur foi, dit au paralytique: Mon enfant, tes péchés sont pardonnés.

and Jesus having seen their faith, saith to the paralytic, `Child, thy sins have been forgiven thee.'

6 I l y avait là quelques scribes, qui étaient assis, et qui se disaient au dedans d'eux:

And there were certain of the scribes there sitting, and reasoning in their hearts,

7 C omment cet homme parle-t-il ainsi? Il blasphème. Qui peut pardonner les péchés, si ce n'est Dieu seul?

`Why doth this one thus speak evil words? who is able to forgive sins except one -- God?'

8 J ésus, ayant aussitôt connu par son esprit ce qu'ils pensaient au dedans d'eux, leur dit: Pourquoi avez-vous de telles pensées dans vos coeurs?

And immediately Jesus, having known in his spirit that they thus reason in themselves, said to them, `Why these things reason ye in your hearts?

9 L equel est le plus aisé, de dire au paralytique: Tes péchés sont pardonnés, ou de dire: Lève-toi, prends ton lit, et marche?

which is easier, to say to the paralytic, The sins have been forgiven to thee? or to say, Rise, and take up thy couch, and walk?

10 O r, afin que vous sachiez que le Fils de l'homme a sur la terre le pouvoir de pardonner les péchés:

`And, that ye may know that the Son of Man hath authority on the earth to forgive sins -- (he saith to the paralytic) --

11 J e te l'ordonne, dit-il au paralytique, lève-toi, prends ton lit, et va dans ta maison.

I say to thee, Rise, and take up thy couch, and go away to thy house;'

12 E t, à l'instant, il se leva, prit son lit, et sortit en présence de tout le monde, de sorte qu'ils étaient tous dans l'étonnement et glorifiaient Dieu, disant: Nous n'avons jamais rien vu de pareil.

and he rose immediately, and having taken up the couch, he went forth before all, so that all were astonished, and do glorify God, saying -- `Never thus did we see.'

13 J ésus sortit de nouveau du côté de la mer. Toute la foule venait à lui, et il les enseignait.

And he went forth again by the sea, and all the multitude was coming unto him, and he was teaching them,

14 E n passant, il vit Lévi, fils d'Alphée, assis au bureau des péages. Il lui dit: Suis-moi. Lévi se leva, et le suivit.

and passing by, he saw Levi of Alpheus sitting at the tax-office, and saith to him, `Be following me,' and he, having risen, did follow him.

15 C omme Jésus était à table dans la maison de Lévi, beaucoup de publicains et de gens de mauvaise vie se mirent aussi à table avec lui et avec ses disciples; car ils étaient nombreux, et l'avaient suivi.

And it came to pass, in his reclining (at meat) in his house, that many tax-gatherers and sinners were reclining (at meat) with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many, and they followed him.

16 L es scribes et les pharisiens, le voyant manger avec les publicains et les gens de mauvaise vie, dirent à ses disciples: Pourquoi mange-t-il et boit-il avec les publicains et les gens de mauvaise vie?

And the scribes and the Pharisees, having seen him eating with the tax-gatherers and sinners, said to his disciples, `Why -- that with the tax-gatherers and sinners he doth eat and drink?'

17 C e que Jésus ayant entendu, il leur dit: Ce ne sont pas ceux qui se portent bien qui ont besoin de médecin, mais les malades. Je ne suis pas venu appeler des justes, mais des pécheurs.

And Jesus, having heard, saith to them, `They who are strong have no need of a physician, but they who are ill; I came not to call righteous men, but sinners to reformation.'

18 L es disciples de Jean et les pharisiens jeûnaient. Ils vinrent dire à Jésus: Pourquoi les disciples de Jean et ceux des pharisiens jeûnent-ils, tandis que tes disciples ne jeûnent point?

And the disciples of John and those of the Pharisees were fasting, and they come and say to him, `Wherefore do the disciples of John and those of the Pharisees fast, and thy disciples do not fast?'

19 J ésus leur répondit: Les amis de l'époux peuvent-ils jeûner pendant que l'époux est avec eux? Aussi longtemps qu'ils ont avec eux l'époux, ils ne peuvent jeûner.

And Jesus said to them, `Are the sons of the bride-chamber able, while the bridegroom is with them, to fast? so long time as they have the bridegroom with them they are not able to fast;

20 L es jours viendront où l'époux leur sera enlevé, et alors ils jeûneront en ce jour-là.

but days shall come when the bridegroom may be taken from them, and then they shall fast -- in those days.

21 P ersonne ne coud une pièce de drap neuf à un vieil habit; autrement, la pièce de drap neuf emporterait une partie du vieux, et la déchirure serait pire.

`And no one a patch of undressed cloth doth sew on an old garment, and if not -- the new filling it up doth take from the old and the rent doth become worse;

22 E t personne ne met du vin nouveau dans de vieilles outres; autrement, le vin fait rompre les outres, et le vin et les outres sont perdus; mais il faut mettre le vin nouveau dans des outres neuves.

and no one doth put new wine into old skins, and if not -- the new wine doth burst the skins, and the wine is poured out, and the skins will be destroyed; but new wine into new skins is to be put.'

23 I l arriva, un jour de sabbat, que Jésus traversa des champs de blé. Ses disciples, chemin faisant, se mirent à arracher des épis.

And it came to pass -- he is going along on the sabbaths through the corn-fields -- and his disciples began to make a way, plucking the ears,

24 L es pharisiens lui dirent: Voici, pourquoi font-ils ce qui n'est pas permis pendant le sabbat?

and the Pharisees said to him, `Lo, why do they on the sabbaths that which is not lawful?'

25 J ésus leur répondit: N'avez-vous jamais lu ce que fit David, lorsqu'il fut dans la nécessité et qu'il eut faim, lui et ceux qui étaient avec lui;

And he said to them, `Did ye never read what David did, when he had need and was hungry, he and those with him?

26 c omment il entra dans la maison de Dieu, du temps du souverain sacrificateur Abiathar, et mangea les pains de proposition, qu'il n'est permis qu'aux sacrificateurs de manger, et en donna même à ceux qui étaient avec lui!

how he went into the house of God, (at `Abiathar the chief priest,') and the loaves of the presentation did eat, which it is not lawful to eat, except to the priests, and he gave also to those who were with him?'

27 P uis il leur dit: Le sabbat a été fait pour l'homme, et non l'homme pour le sabbat,

And he said to them, `The sabbath for man was made, not man for the sabbath,

28 d e sorte que le Fils de l'homme est maître même du sabbat.

so that the son of man is lord also of the sabbath.'
