1 J ésus, étant entré dans Jéricho, traversait la ville.

And having entered, he was passing through Jericho,

2 E t voici, un homme riche, appelé Zachée, chef des publicains, cherchait à voir qui était Jésus;

and lo, a man, by name called Zaccheus, and he was a chief tax-gatherer, and he was rich,

3 m ais il ne pouvait y parvenir, à cause de la foule, car il était de petite taille.

and he was seeking to see Jesus, who he is, and was not able for the multitude, because in stature he was small,

4 I l courut en avant, et monta sur un sycomore pour le voir, parce qu'il devait passer par là.

and having run forward before, he went up on a sycamore, that he may see him, because through that he was about to pass by.

5 L orsque Jésus fut arrivé à cet endroit, il leva les yeux et lui dit: Zachée, hâte-toi de descendre; car il faut que je demeure aujourd'hui dans ta maison.

And as Jesus came up to the place, having looked up, he saw him, and said unto him, `Zaccheus, having hastened, come down, for to-day in thy house it behoveth me to remain;'

6 Z achée se hâta de descendre, et le reçut avec joie.

and he having hastened did come down, and did receive him rejoicing;

7 V oyant cela, tous murmuraient, et disaient: Il est allé loger chez un homme pécheur.

and having seen, they were all murmuring, saying -- `With a sinful man he went in to lodge!'

8 M ais Zachée, se tenant devant le Seigneur, lui dit: Voici, Seigneur, je donne aux pauvres la moitié de mes biens, et, si j'ai fait tort de quelque chose à quelqu'un, je lui rends le quadruple.

And Zaccheus having stood, said unto the Lord, `Lo, the half of my goods, sir, I give to the poor, and if of any one anything I did take by false accusation, I give back fourfold.'

9 J ésus lui dit: Le salut est entré aujourd'hui dans cette maison, parce que celui-ci est aussi un fils d'Abraham.

And Jesus said unto him -- `To-day salvation did come to this house, inasmuch as he also is a son of Abraham;

10 C ar le Fils de l'homme est venu chercher et sauver ce qui était perdu.

for the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.'

11 I ls écoutaient ces choses, et Jésus ajouta une parabole, parce qu'il était près de Jérusalem, et qu'on croyait qu'à l'instant le royaume de Dieu allait paraître.

And while they are hearing these things, having added he spake a simile, because of his being nigh to Jerusalem, and of their thinking that the reign of God is about presently to be made manifest.

12 I l dit donc: Un homme de haute naissance s'en alla dans un pays lointain, pour se faire investir de l'autorité royale, et revenir ensuite.

He said therefore, `A certain man of birth went on to a far country, to take to himself a kingdom, and to return,

13 I l appela dix de ses serviteurs, leur donna dix mines, et leur dit: Faites-les valoir jusqu'à ce que je revienne.

and having called ten servants of his own, he gave to them ten pounds, and said unto them, Do business -- till I come;

14 M ais ses concitoyens le haïssaient, et ils envoyèrent une ambassade après lui, pour dire: Nous ne voulons pas que cet homme règne sur nous.

and his citizens were hating him, and did send an embassy after him, saying, We do not wish this one to reign over us.

15 L orsqu'il fut de retour, après avoir été investi de l'autorité royale, il fit appeler auprès de lui les serviteurs auxquels il avait donné l'argent, afin de connaître comment chacun l'avait fait valoir.

`And it came to pass, on his coming back, having taken the kingdom, that he commanded these servants to be called to him, to whom he gave the money, that he might know what any one had done in business.

16 L e premier vint, et dit: Seigneur, ta mine a rapporté dix mines.

`And the first came near, saying, Sir, thy pound did gain ten pounds;

17 I l lui dit: C'est bien, bon serviteur; parce que tu as été fidèle en peu de chose, reçois le gouvernement de dix villes.

and he said to him, Well done, good servant, because in a very little thou didst become faithful, be having authority over ten cities.

18 L e second vint, et dit: Seigneur, ta mine a produit cinq mines.

`And the second came, saying, Sir, thy pound made five pounds;

19 I l lui dit: Toi aussi, sois établi sur cinq villes.

and he said also to this one, And thou, become thou over five cities.

20 U n autre vint, et dit: Seigneur, voici ta mine, que j'ai gardée dans un linge;

`And another came, saying, Sir, lo, thy pound, that I had lying away in a napkin;

21 c ar j'avais peur de toi, parce que tu es un homme sévère; tu prends ce que tu n'as pas déposé, et tu moissonnes ce que tu n'as pas semé.

for I was afraid of thee, because thou art an austere man; thou takest up what thou didst not lay down, and reapest what thou didst not sow.

22 I l lui dit: Je te juge sur tes paroles, méchant serviteur; tu savais que je suis un homme sévère, prenant ce que je n'ai pas déposé, et moissonnant ce que je n'ai pas semé;

`And he saith to him, Out of thy mouth I will judge thee, evil servant: thou knewest that I am an austere man, taking up what I did not lay down, and reaping what I did not sow!

23 p ourquoi donc n'as-tu pas mis mon argent dans une banque, afin qu'à mon retour je le retirasse avec un intérêt?

and wherefore didst thou not give my money to the bank, and I, having come, with interest might have received it?

24 P uis il dit à ceux qui étaient là: Otez-lui la mine, et donnez-la à celui qui a les dix mines.

`And to those standing by he said, Take from him the pound, and give to him having the ten pounds --

25 I ls lui dirent: Seigneur, il a dix mines. -

(and they said to him, Sir, he hath ten pounds) --

26 J e vous le dis, on donnera à celui qui a, mais à celui qui n'a pas on ôtera même ce qu'il a.

for I say to you, that to every one having shall be given, and from him not having, also what he hath shall be taken from him,

27 A u reste, amenez ici mes ennemis, qui n'ont pas voulu que je régnasse sur eux, et tuez-les en ma présence.

but those my enemies, who did not wish me to reign over them, bring hither and slay before me.'

28 A près avoir ainsi parlé, Jésus marcha devant la foule, pour monter à Jérusalem.

And having said these things, he went on before, going up to Jerusalem.

29 L orsqu'il approcha de Bethphagé et de Béthanie, vers la montagne appelée montagne des Oliviers, Jésus envoya deux de ses disciples,

And it came to pass, as he came nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, unto the mount called of the Olives, he sent two of his disciples,

30 e n disant: Allez au village qui est en face; quand vous y serez entrés, vous trouverez un ânon attaché, sur lequel aucun homme ne s'est jamais assis; détachez-le, et amenez-le.

having said, Go away to the village over-against, in which, entering into, ye shall find a colt bound, on which no one of men did ever sit, having loosed it, bring;

31 S i quelqu'un vous demande: Pourquoi le détachez-vous? vous lui répondrez: Le Seigneur en a besoin.

and if any one doth question you, Wherefore do ye loose ? thus ye shall say to him -- The Lord hath need of it.'

32 C eux qui étaient envoyés allèrent, et trouvèrent les choses comme Jésus leur avait dit.

And those sent, having gone away, found according as he said to them,

33 C omme ils détachaient l'ânon, ses maîtres leur dirent: Pourquoi détachez-vous l'ânon?

and while they are loosing the colt, its owners said unto them, `Why loose ye the colt?'

34 I ls répondirent: Le Seigneur en a besoin.

and they said, `The Lord hath need of it;'

35 E t ils amenèrent à Jésus l'ânon, sur lequel ils jetèrent leurs vêtements, et firent monter Jésus.

and they brought it unto Jesus, and having cast their garments upon the colt, they did set Jesus upon it.

36 Q uand il fut en marche, les gens étendirent leurs vêtements sur le chemin.

And as he is going, they were spreading their garments in the way,

37 E t lorsque déjà il approchait de Jérusalem, vers la descente de la montagne des Oliviers, toute la multitude des disciples, saisie de joie, se mit à louer Dieu à haute voix pour tous les miracles qu'ils avaient vus.

and as he is coming nigh now, at the descent of the mount of the Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began rejoicing to praise God with a great voice for all the mighty works they had seen,

38 I ls disaient: Béni soit le roi qui vient au nom du Seigneur! Paix dans le ciel, et gloire dans les lieux très hauts!

saying, `blessed he who is coming, a king in the name of the Lord; peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.'

39 Q uelques pharisiens, du milieu de la foule, dirent à Jésus: Maître, reprends tes disciples.

And certain of the Pharisees from the multitude said unto him, `Teacher, rebuke thy disciples;'

40 E t il répondit: Je vous le dis, s'ils se taisent, les pierres crieront!

and he answering said to them, `I say to you, that, if these shall be silent, the stones will cry out!'

41 C omme il approchait de la ville, Jésus, en la voyant, pleura sur elle, et dit:

And when he came nigh, having seen the city, he wept over it,

42 S i toi aussi, au moins en ce jour qui t'est donné, tu connaissais les choses qui appartiennent à ta paix! Mais maintenant elles sont cachées à tes yeux.

saying -- `If thou didst know, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things for thy peace; but now they were hid from thine eyes.

43 I l viendra sur toi des jours où tes ennemis t'environneront de tranchées, t'enfermeront, et te serreront de toutes parts;

`Because days shall come upon thee, and thine enemies shall cast around thee a rampart, and compass thee round, and press thee on every side,

44 i ls te détruiront, toi et tes enfants au milieu de toi, et ils ne laisseront pas en toi pierre sur pierre, parce que tu n'as pas connu le temps où tu as été visitée.

and lay thee low, and thy children within thee, and they shall not leave in thee a stone upon a stone, because thou didst not know the time of thy inspection.'

45 I l entra dans le temple, et il se mit à chasser ceux qui vendaient,

And having entered into the temple, he began to cast forth those selling in it, and those buying,

46 l eur disant: Il est écrit: Ma maison sera une maison de prière. Mais vous, vous en avez fait une caverne de voleurs.

saying to them, `It hath been written, My house is a house of prayer -- but ye made it a den of robbers.'

47 I l enseignait tous les jours dans le temple. Et les principaux sacrificateurs, les scribes, et les principaux du peuple cherchaient à le faire périr;

And he was teaching daily in the temple, but the chief priests and the scribes were seeking to destroy him -- also the chiefs of the people --

48 m ais ils ne savaient comment s'y prendre, car tout le peuple l'écoutait avec admiration.

and they were not finding what they shall do, for all the people were hanging on him, hearing him.
