1 J e dis la vérité en Christ, je ne mens point, ma conscience m'en rend témoignage par le Saint Esprit:

Truth I say in Christ, I lie not, my conscience bearing testimony with me in the Holy Spirit,

2 J 'éprouve une grande tristesse, et j'ai dans le coeur un chagrin continuel.

that I have great grief and unceasing pain in my heart --

3 C ar je voudrais moi-même être anathème et séparé de Christ pour mes frères, mes parents selon la chair,

for I was wishing, I myself, to be anathema from the Christ -- for my brethren, my kindred, according to the flesh,

4 q ui sont Israélites, à qui appartiennent l'adoption, et la gloire, et les alliances, et la loi, et le culte,

who are Israelites, whose the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the lawgiving, and the service, and the promises,

5 e t les promesses, et les patriarches, et de qui est issu, selon la chair, le Christ, qui est au-dessus de toutes choses, Dieu béni éternellement. Amen!

whose the fathers, and of whom the Christ, according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed to the ages. Amen.

6 C e n'est point à dire que la parole de Dieu soit restée sans effet. Car tous ceux qui descendent d'Israël ne sont pas Israël,

And it is not possible that the word of God hath failed; for not all who of Israel are these Israel;

7 e t, pour être la postérité d'Abraham, ils ne sont pas tous ses enfants; mais il est dit: En Isaac sera nommée pour toi une postérité,

nor because they are seed of Abraham all children, but -- `in Isaac shall a seed be called to thee;'

8 c 'est-à-dire que ce ne sont pas les enfants de la chair qui sont enfants de Dieu, mais que ce sont les enfants de la promesse qui sont regardés comme la postérité.

that is, the children of the flesh -- these not children of God; but the children of the promise are reckoned for seed;

9 V oici, en effet, la parole de la promesse: Je reviendrai à cette même époque, et Sara aura un fils.

for the word of promise this; `According to this time I will come, and there shall be to Sarah a son.'

10 E t, de plus, il en fut ainsi de Rébecca, qui conçut du seul Isaac notre père;

And not only, but also Rebecca, having conceived by one -- Isaac our father --

11 c ar, quoique les enfants ne fussent pas encore nés et ils n'eussent fait ni bien ni mal, -afin que le dessein d'élection de Dieu subsistât, sans dépendre des oeuvres, et par la seule volonté de celui qui appelle, -

(for they being not yet born, neither having done anything good or evil, that the purpose of God, according to choice, might remain; not of works, but of Him who is calling,) it was said to her --

12 i l fut dit à Rébecca: L'aîné sera assujetti au plus jeune; selon qu'il est écrit:

`The greater shall serve the less;'

13 J 'ai aimé Jacob Et j'ai haï Ésaü.

according as it hath been written, `Jacob I did love, and Esau I did hate.'

14 Q ue dirons-nous donc? Y a-t-il en Dieu de l'injustice? Loin de là!

What, then, shall we say? unrighteousness with God? let it not be!

15 C ar il dit à Moïse: Je ferai miséricorde à qui je fais miséricorde, et j'aurai compassion de qui j'ai compassion.

for to Moses He saith, `I will do kindness to whom I do kindness, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion;'

16 A insi donc, cela ne dépend ni de celui qui veut, ni de celui qui court, mais de Dieu qui fait miséricorde.

so, then -- not of him who is willing, nor of him who is running, but of God who is doing kindness:

17 C ar l'Écriture dit à Pharaon: Je t'ai suscité à dessein pour montrer en toi ma puissance, et afin que mon nom soit publié par toute la terre.

for the Writing saith to Pharaoh -- `For this very thing I did raise thee up, that I might shew in thee My power, and that My name might be declared in all the land;'

18 A insi, il fait miséricorde à qui il veut, et il endurcit qui il veut.

so, then, to whom He willeth, He doth kindness, and to whom He willeth, He doth harden.

19 T u me diras: Pourquoi blâme-t-il encore? Car qui est-ce qui résiste à sa volonté?

Thou wilt say, then, to me, `Why yet doth He find fault? for His counsel who hath resisted?'

20 O homme, toi plutôt, qui es-tu pour contester avec Dieu? Le vase d'argile dira-t-il à celui qui l'a formé: Pourquoi m'as-tu fait ainsi?

nay, but, O man, who art thou that art answering again to God? shall the thing formed say to Him who did form, Why me didst thou make thus?

21 L e potier n'est-il pas maître de l'argile, pour faire avec la même masse un vase d'honneur et un vase d'un usage vil?

hath not the potter authority over the clay, out of the same lump to make the one vessel to honour, and the one to dishonour?

22 E t que dire, si Dieu, voulant montrer sa colère et faire connaître sa puissance, a supporté avec une grande patience des vases de colère formés pour la perdition,

And if God, willing to shew the wrath and to make known His power, did endure, in much long suffering, vessels of wrath fitted for destruction,

23 e t s'il a voulu faire connaître la richesse de sa gloire envers des vases de miséricorde qu'il a d'avance préparés pour la gloire?

and that He might make known the riches of His glory on vessels of kindness, that He before prepared for glory, whom also He did call -- us --

24 A insi nous a-t-il appelés, non seulement d'entre les Juifs, mais encore d'entre les païens,

not only out of Jews, but also out of nations,

25 s elon qu'il le dit dans Osée: J'appellerai mon peuple celui qui n'était pas mon peuple, et bien-aimée celle qui n'était pas la bien-aimée;

as also in Hosea He saith, `I will call what not My people -- My people; and her not beloved -- Beloved,

26 e t là où on leur disait: Vous n'êtes pas mon peuple! ils seront appelés fils du Dieu vivant.

and it shall be -- in the place where it was said to them, Ye not My people; there they shall be called sons of the living God.'

27 É saïe, de son côté, s'écrie au sujet d'Israël: Quand le nombre des fils d'Israël serait comme le sable de la mer, Un reste seulement sera sauvé.

And Isaiah doth cry concerning Israel, `If the number of the sons of Israel may be as the sand of the sea, the remnant shall be saved;

28 C ar le Seigneur exécutera pleinement et promptement sur la terre ce qu'il a résolu.

for a matter He is finishing, and is cutting short in righteousness, because a matter cut short will the Lord do upon the land.

29 E t, comme Ésaïe l'avait dit auparavant: Si le Seigneur des armées Ne nous eût laissé une postérité, Nous serions devenus comme Sodome, Nous aurions été semblables à Gomorrhe.

and according as Isaiah saith before, `Except the Lord of Sabaoth did leave to us a seed, as Sodom we had become, and as Gomorrah we had been made like.'

30 Q ue dirons-nous donc? Les païens, qui ne cherchaient pas la justice, ont obtenu la justice, la justice qui vient de la foi,

What, then, shall we say? that nations who are not pursuing righteousness did attain to righteousness, and righteousness that of faith,

31 t andis qu'Israël, qui cherchait une loi de justice, n'est pas parvenu à cette loi.

and Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, at a law of righteousness did not arrive;

32 P ourquoi? Parce qu'Israël l'a cherchée, non par la foi, mais comme provenant des oeuvres. Ils se sont heurtés contre la pierre d'achoppement,

wherefore? because -- not by faith, but as by works of law; for they did stumble at the stone of stumbling,

33 s elon qu'il est écrit: Voici, je mets en Sion une pierre d'achoppement Et un rocher de scandale, Et celui qui croit en lui ne sera point confus.

according as it hath been written, `Lo, I place in Sion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence; and every one who is believing thereon shall not be ashamed.'
