1 L os filisteos volvieron a reunir sus tropas en Soco, un pueblo de Judá, y acamparon en Efesdamín, entre Soco y Azeca.

And the Philistines gather their camps to battle, and are gathered to Shochoh, which to Judah, and encamp between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephes-Dammim;

2 T ambién Saúl reunió a los israelitas y acamparon en el valle de Elá, y se prepararon para presentar combate.

and Saul and the men of Israel have been gathered, and encamp by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array to meet the Philistines.

3 U n valle separaba a los dos ejércitos. Los filisteos estaban de un lado del monte, y los israelitas estaban del otro lado.

And the Philistines are standing on the mountain on this side, and the Israelites are standing on the mountain on that side, and the valley between them.

4 D e las filas del ejército filisteo salió un guerrero llamado Goliat, que era de Gat, el cual medía unos tres metros de altura.

And there goeth out a man of the duellists from the camps of the Philistines, Goliath his name, from Gath; his height six cubits and a span,

5 L levaba puesto un casco de bronce, y una cota de malla, también de bronce, que pesaba cincuenta y cinco kilos.

and a helmet of brass on his head, and a scaled coat of mail he clothed, and the weight of the coat of mail five thousand shekels of brass,

6 U nas placas de bronce le protegían las piernas, y llevaba al hombro una jabalina del mismo metal.

and a frontlet of brass on his feet, and a javelin of brass between his shoulders,

7 E l asta de su lanza era gruesa como un rodillo de telar, y la punta era de hierro y pesaba unos seis kilos. Su escudero iba delante de él.

and the wood of his spear like a beam of weavers', and the flame of his spear six hundred shekels of iron, and the bearer of the buckler is going before him.

8 C on fuertes gritos, el filisteo les dijo a los soldados israelitas: «¿Para qué se forman en orden de batalla? Yo soy un guerrero filisteo, y ustedes están al servicio de Saúl. Escojan a uno de sus guerreros, para que venga y luche contra mí.

And he standeth and calleth unto the ranks of Israel, and saith to them, `Why are ye come out to set in array the battle? not I the Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose for you a man, and let him come down unto me;

9 S i en la pelea él me vence, nosotros nos pondremos a su servicio; pero si yo lo venzo, entonces ustedes serán nuestros esclavos.»

if he be able to fight with me, and have smitten me, then we have been to you for servants; and if I am able for him, and have smitten him, then ye have been to us for servants, and have served us.'

10 T odavía añadió el filisteo: «En este día, yo desafío al ejército israelita. Que venga uno de sus guerreros y pelee contra mí.»

And the Philistine saith, `I have reproached the ranks of Israel this day; give to me a man, and we fight together.'

11 C uando Saúl y el ejército de Israel oyeron el reto del filisteo, se quedaron atónitos y se llenaron de miedo.

And Saul heareth -- and all Israel -- these words of the Philistine, and they are broken down and greatly afraid.

12 D avid era hijo del efrateo Yesé, el de Belén de Judá. Tenía ocho hijos, y cuando Saúl era rey, él ya era de los más ancianos del pueblo.

And David son of this Ephrathite of Beth-Lehem-Judah, whose name Jesse, and he hath eight sons, and the man in the days of Saul hath become aged among men;

13 S us tres hijos mayores eran parte del ejército de Saúl y habían salido a luchar contra los filisteos. Se llamaban Eliab, el primogénito, Abinadab y Samá,

and the three eldest sons of Jesse go, they have gone after Saul to battle; and the name of his three sons who have gone into battle Eliab the first-born, and his second Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

14 y siguieron a Saúl, pero como David era el menor,

And David is the youngest, and the three eldest have gone after Saul,

15 i ba y volvía del campamento de Saúl a Belén, porque tenía que cuidar las ovejas de su padre.

and David is going and returning from Saul, to feed the flock of his father at Beth-Lehem.

16 D urante cuarenta días seguidos, y a mañana y tarde, el filisteo Goliat estuvo desafiando a los israelitas.

And the Philistine draweth nigh, morning and evening, and stationeth himself forty days.

17 U no de esos días, Yesé le dijo a David, su hijo: «Ve al campamento y llévales a tus hermanos veinte litros de trigo tostado y estos diez panes.

And Jesse saith to David his son, `Take, I pray thee, to thy brethren, an ephah of this roasted, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;

18 L leva también diez quesos de leche, y entrégaselos al comandante del batallón; pero asegúrate de que ellos estén bien, y tráeme algo que pruebe que están bien.»

and these ten cuttings of the cheese thou dost take in to the head of the thousand, and thy brethren thou dost inspect for welfare, and their pledge dost receive.'

19 M ientras tanto, Saúl y su ejército luchaban contra los filisteos en el valle de Elá.

And Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

20 Y David se levantó muy temprano, dejó las ovejas al cuidado de otro, y fue a cumplir con el encargo de su padre Yesé. Llegó al campamento cuando el ejército salía en orden de batalla, lanzando gritos de combate,

And David riseth early in the morning, and leaveth the flock to a keeper, and lifteth up, and goeth, as Jesse commanded him, and he cometh in to the path, and to the force which is going out unto the rank, and they have shouted for battle;

21 y pudo ver cómo ambos ejércitos se formaban, uno frente al otro, para entrar en batalla.

and Israel and the Philistines set in array rank to meet rank.

22 E ntonces David dejó el encargo en manos del que cuidaba las provisiones, y corrió a donde estaba el ejército para saber si sus hermanos estaban bien.

And David letteth down the goods from off him on the hand of a keeper of the goods, and runneth into the rank, and cometh and asketh of his brethren of welfare.

23 P ero mientras hablaba con ellos, oyó que Goliat, el guerrero filisteo, se puso en medio de los dos campamentos y lanzó el mismo desafío de los días anteriores.

And he is speaking with them, and lo, a man of the duellists is coming up, Goliath the Philistine his name, of Gath, out of the ranks of the Philistines, and he speaketh according to those words, and David heareth;

24 T ambién vio cómo, al ver al guerrero filisteo, los soldados israelitas se echaban a correr llenos de miedo,

and all the men of Israel when they see the man flee from his presence, and are greatly afraid.

25 m ientras unos a otros se decían: «¿Ya vieron a ese soldado? Siempre viene y nos desafía a pelear contra él. A quien lo venza, el rey Saúl lo colmará de riquezas y, además, le dará a su hija en matrimonio, y su familia quedará libre de pagar tributos.»

And the men of Israel say, `Have ye seen this man who is coming up? for, to reproach Israel he is coming up, and it hath been -- the man who smiteth him, the king doth enrich him with great riches, and his daughter he doth give to him, and his father's house doth make free in Israel.'

26 E ntonces David les preguntó a los que estaban allí cerca: «¿Qué recompensa se le dará a quien venza a este filisteo y libre a Israel de semejante afrenta? ¿Quién es este filisteo incircunciso, para provocar al ejército del Dios vivo?»

And David speaketh unto the men who are standing by him, saying, `What is done to the man who smiteth this Philistine, and hath turned aside reproach from Israel? for who this uncircumcised Philistine that he hath reproached the ranks of the living God?'

27 L os del ejército le dijeron lo mismo que ya le habían dicho, en cuanto a quien venciera al filisteo.

And the people speak to him according to this word, saying, `Thus it is done to the man who smiteth him.'

28 P ero cuando Eliab, su hermano mayor, lo oyó hablar con los soldados, se llenó de ira contra David y le dijo: «¿A qué has venido? ¿Con quién dejaste nuestras pocas ovejas en el desierto? Yo sé que te crees muy valiente, y también sé que por malicia has venido a ver la batalla.»

And Eliab, his eldest brother, heareth when he speaketh unto the men, and the anger of Eliab burneth against David, and he saith, `Why this -- thou hast come down! and to whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I have known thy pride, and the evil of thy heart -- for, to see the battle thou hast come down.'

29 D avid le respondió: «¿Y qué es lo que he hecho? ¡Tú sólo hablas por hablar!»

And David saith, `What have I done now? is it not a word?'

30 Y se apartó de su hermano, y fue con otros soldados para que le confirmaran lo que había oído, y le dieron la misma respuesta.

And he turneth round from him unto another, and saith according to this word, and the people return him word as the first word.

31 P ero alguien oyó el comentario de David, y cuando Saúl lo supo, mandó que lo llevaran a su presencia.

And the words which David hath spoken are heard, and they declare before Saul, and he receiveth him;

32 E ntonces David le dijo a Saúl: «Que no se desanime nadie por causa de ese filisteo; este siervo tuyo irá a pelear contra él.»

and David saith unto Saul, `Let no man's heart fall because of him, thy servant doth go, and hath fought with this Philistine.'

33 P ero Saúl le dijo: «No creo que puedas pelear contra él, pues todavía eres muy joven y él ha sido un guerrero desde su juventud.»

And Saul saith unto David, `Thou art not able to go unto this Philistine, to fight with him, for a youth thou, and he a man of war from his youth.'

34 D avid le respondió: «Sí, yo soy el pastor de las ovejas de mi padre, pero cuando un león o un oso viene a llevarse algún cordero del rebaño,

And David saith unto Saul, `A shepherd hath thy servant been to his father among the sheep, and the lion hath come -- and the bear -- and hath taken away a sheep out of the drove,

35 y o salgo tras el león o el oso, y lo hiero y lo libro de sus fauces. Si el animal me ataca, con mis manos lo agarro por las quijadas, y lo hiero hasta matarlo.

and I have gone out after him, and smitten him, and delivered out of his mouth, and he riseth against me, and I have taken hold on his beard, and smitten him, and put him to death.

36 N o importa si es un león o un oso, tu siervo los mata. Y este filisteo incircunciso es para mí como uno de esos animales, porque ha provocado al ejército del Dios vivo.»

Both the lion and the bear hath thy servant smitten, and this uncircumcised Philistine hath been as one of them, for he hath reproached the ranks of the living God.'

37 T odavía añadió David: «El Señor me ha librado de las garras de leones y de osos, y también me librará de este filisteo.» Y Saúl le respondió: «Ve, pues, y que el Señor te acompañe.»

And David saith, `Jehovah, who delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, He doth deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.' And Saul saith unto David, `Go, and Jehovah is with thee.'

38 E ntonces Saúl le puso a David su propia ropa, y le puso un casco de bronce sobre la cabeza, y lo cubrió con una coraza.

And Saul clotheth David with his long robe, and hath put a helmet of brass on his head, and doth clothe him with a coat of mail.

39 D avid se colocó la espada al cinto, e hizo el intento de caminar, pues nunca había portado un equipo así. Y como no pudo caminar, le dijo a Saúl: «No puedo moverme con estas cosas, porque nunca las he usado.» Y desechó esos arreos militares,

And David girded his sword above his long robe, and beginneth to go, for he hath not tried; and David saith unto Saul, `I am not able to go with these, for I had not tried;' and David turneth them aside from off him.

40 y tomando su bastón de pastor escogió del arroyo cinco piedras lisas y las puso en su morral; luego, tomó su honda y fue al encuentro del filisteo,

And he taketh his staff in his hand, and chooseth for him five smooth stones from the brook, and putteth them in the shepherds' habiliments that he hath, even in the scrip, and his sling in his hand, and he draweth nigh unto the Philistine.

41 q ue también se encaminó hacia David, precedido de su escudero.

And the Philistine goeth on, going and drawing near unto David, and the man bearing the buckler before him,

42 Y cuando el filisteo vio a David, lo miró con desprecio, pues éste era un jovencito rubio y bien parecido.

and the Philistine looketh attentively, and seeth David, and despiseth him, for he was a youth, and ruddy, with a fair appearance.

43 E ntonces el filisteo le gritó a David: «¿Soy acaso un perro, para que vengas a darme de palos?» Y maldijo a David en nombre de sus dioses,

And the Philistine saith unto David, `Am I a dog that thou art coming unto me with staves?' and the Philistine revileth David by his gods,

44 y lo amenazó: «Ven acá, que contigo voy a alimentar a las aves de rapiña y a los animales salvajes.»

and the Philistine saith unto David, `Come unto me, and I give thy flesh to the fowl of the heavens, and to the beast of the field.'

45 P ero David le respondió: «Tú vienes contra mí armado de espada, lanza y jabalina; pero yo vengo contra ti en el nombre del Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de los escuadrones de Israel, a quien tú has provocado.

And David saith unto the Philistine, `Thou art coming unto me with sword, and with spear, and with buckler, and I am coming unto thee in the name of Jehovah of Hosts, God of the ranks of Israel, which thou hast reproached.

46 H oy mismo el Señor te entregará en mis manos. Te voy a vencer, y te voy a cortar la cabeza, y los cadáveres de tus compatriotas se los voy a dar a las aves de rapiña y a los animales salvajes. Así en todos los pueblos se sabrá que hay Dios en Israel.

This day doth Jehovah shut thee up into my hand -- and I have smitten thee, and turned aside thy head from off thee, and given the carcase of the camp of the Philistines this day to the fowl of the heavens, and to the beast of the earth, and all the earth do know that God is for Israel.

47 T oda esta gente va a saber que el Señor no necesita de espadas ni de lanzas para salvarlos. La victoria es del Señor, y él va a ponerlos a ustedes en nuestras manos.»

and all this assembly do know that not by sword and by spear doth Jehovah save, that the battle Jehovah's, and He hath given you into our hand.'

48 Y cuando el poderoso filisteo se encaminó para encontrarse con David, éste rápidamente se colocó en línea de combate frente al filisteo,

And it hath come to pass, that the Philistine hath risen, and goeth, and draweth near to meet David, and David hasteth and runneth to the rank to meet the Philistine,

49 m etió su mano en el morral y, sacando una piedra, la colocó en su honda y la arrojó con fuerza al filisteo. La piedra se incrustó en la frente de Goliat, y éste cayó con la cara al suelo.

and David putteth forth his hand unto the vessel, and taketh thence a stone, and slingeth, and smiteth the Philistine on his forehead, and the stone sinketh into his forehead, and he falleth on his face to the earth.

50 A sí fue como David venció al filisteo: con una honda y una piedra. Lo hirió de muerte sin necesidad de usar la espada.

And David is stronger than the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smiteth the Philistine, and putteth him to death, and there is no sword in the hand of David,

51 L uego corrió y desenvainó la espada del filisteo, y se subió sobre él para rematarlo, y finalmente le cortó la cabeza. Y cuando el ejército de los filisteos vio que su gran guerrero estaba muerto, se dio a la fuga.

and David runneth and standeth over the Philistine, and taketh his sword, and draweth it out of its sheath, and putteth him to death, and cutteth off with it his head; and the Philistines see that their hero dead, and flee.

52 P ero los del ejército israelita y los de Judá lanzaron fuertes alaridos y se fueron por todo el valle, en persecusión de los filisteos, y los siguieron hasta las puertas de Ecrón. Por todo el camino que va a Sagarayin, Gat y Ecrón, los filisteos quedaron tendidos y heridos de muerte.

And the men of Israel rise -- also Judah -- and shout, and pursue the Philistines till thou enter the valley, and unto the gates of Ekron, and the wounded of the Philistines fall in the way of Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron,

53 D espués de perseguir a los filisteos, los israelitas volvieron y saquearon su campamento.

and the sons of Israel turn back from burning after the Philistines, and spoil their camps.

54 P or su parte, David tomó la cabeza del filisteo y la llevó a Jerusalén, aunque las armas del guerrero las guardó en su tienda.

And David taketh the head of the Philistine, and bringeth it in to Jerusalem, and his weapons he hath put in his own tent.

55 S aúl vio a David cuando salía para luchar contra el filisteo, y le preguntó a Abner, que era el general de su ejército: «¿Quién es el padre de ese joven?» Y Abner respondió:

And when Saul seeth David going out to meet the Philistine, he hath said unto Abner, head of the host, `Whose son this -- the youth, Abner?' and Abner saith, `Thy soul liveth, O king, I have not known.'

56 « Su Majestad me va a perdonar, pero le juro que no lo sé.» Entonces el rey ordenó: «Pues averigua quién es su padre.»

And the king saith, `Ask thou whose son this -- the young man.'

57 Y cuando David volvía de matar al filisteo, Abner lo tomó del brazo y lo llevó ante Saúl, mientras David llevaba en su mano la cabeza del filisteo.

And when David turneth back from smiting the Philistine, then Abner taketh him and bringeth him in before Saul, and the head of the Philistine in his hand;

58 Y Saúl le preguntó: «Dime, jovencito: ¿de quién eres hijo?» Y David respondió: «Mi padre es Yesé de Belén, siervo de Su Majestad.»

and Saul saith unto him, `Whose son thou, O youth?' and David saith, `Son of thy servant Jesse, the Beth-Lehemite.'
