1 A todo esto dirigí mi atención, para concluir lo siguiente: Que la gente sabia y honrada está en las manos de Dios, lo mismo que sus obras, pero que nosotros los mortales nada sabemos del amor ni del odio, aun cuando los tengamos delante de nosotros.

But all this I have laid unto my heart, so as to clear up the whole of this, that the righteous and the wise, and their works, in the hand of God, neither love nor hatred doth man know, the whole before them.

2 A todos nos espera lo mismo. El mismo final tendrán los justos y los injustos, los buenos y los malos, los puros y los impuros, los que ofrecen sacrificios y los que no los ofrecen, los que hacen lo bueno y los que hacen lo malo, los que hacen juramentos y los que no los hacen.

The whole as to the whole; one event is to the righteous and to the wicked, to the good, and to the clean, and to the unclean, and to him who is sacrificing, and to him who is not sacrificing; as the good, so the sinner, he who is swearing as he who is fearing an oath.

3 H ay un mal en todo lo que se hace bajo el sol, y es que a todos los mortales nos espera lo mismo, y que durante toda nuestra vida tenemos el corazón lleno de maldad e insensatez, y que al final acabamos entre los muertos.

This an evil among all that hath been done under the sun, that one event to all, and also the heart of the sons of man is full of evil, and madness in their heart during their life, and after it -- unto the dead.

4 S in embargo, aún hay esperanza para todos los que viven, pues un perro vivo es mejor que un león muerto.

But him who is joined unto all the living there is confidence, for to a living dog it better than to the dead lion.

5 C iertamente, los que viven saben que un día morirán; pero los muertos nada saben ni nada esperan, porque su memoria queda en el olvido.

For the living know that they die, and the dead know not anything, and there is no more to them a reward, for their remembrance hath been forgotten.

6 T ambién mueren con ellos sus amores, sus odios y sus envidias, y jamás vuelven a participar en nada de lo que se hace bajo el sol.

Their love also, their hatred also, their envy also, hath already perished, and they have no more a portion to the age in all that hath been done under the sun.

7 ¡ Vamos, disfruta de tu pan con alegría, y bebe tu vino con un corazón feliz, porque tus obras son del agrado de Dios!

Go, eat with joy thy bread, and drink with a glad heart thy wine, for already hath God been pleased with thy works.

8 ¡ Que sean siempre blancos tus vestidos! ¡Que nunca te falte perfume en la cabeza!

At all times let thy garments be white, and let not perfume be lacking on thy head.

9 ¡ Goza de la vida con tu amada, todos los días de la vana vida que se te ha concedido bajo el sol! ¡Ésa es tu parte en esta vida! ¡Eso es lo que te ha tocado de todos tus afanes bajo el sol!

See life with the wife whom thou hast loved, all the days of the life of thy vanity, that He hath given to thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity, for it thy portion in life, even of thy labour that thou art labouring at under the sun.

10 T odo lo que te venga a la mano hacer, hazlo según tus fuerzas. En el sepulcro, que es adonde vas, no hay obras ni proyectos, ni conocimiento ni sabiduría.

All that thy hand findeth to do, with thy power do, for there is no work, and device, and knowledge, and wisdom in Sheol whither thou art going.

11 V olví la mirada, y vi bajo el sol que no son los más veloces los que ganan la carrera, ni son los más fuertes los que ganan la guerra; también vi que los sabios no tienen qué comer, que quien es inteligente no es necesariamente rico, y que quien tiene conocimientos no siempre es favorecido. Todos ellos tienen su momento y su ocasión.

I have turned so as to see under the sun, that not to the swift the race, nor to the mighty the battle, nor even to the wise bread, nor even to the intelligent wealth, nor even to the skilful grace, for time and chance happen with them all.

12 A decir verdad, nosotros los mortales no sabemos cuándo nos llegará la hora. Somos como los peces cuando caen en la red artera, o como las aves cuando caen en la trampa: cuando un mal momento nos sobreviene, quedamos atrapados.

For even man knoweth not his time; as fish that are taken hold of by an evil net, and as birds that are taken hold of by a snare, like these the sons of man snared at an evil time, when it falleth upon them suddenly.

13 T ambién he visto bajo el sol algo que encierra una gran sabiduría:

This also I have seen: wisdom under the sun, and it is great to me.

14 U n rey muy poderoso lanzó su ataque contra una ciudad muy pequeña, defendida por muy pocos hombres. Le puso sitio y levantó contra ella grandes baluartes.

A little city, and few men in it, and a great king hath come unto it, and hath surrounded it, and hath built against it great bulwarks;

15 A llí dentro se encontraba un hombre pobre, pero sabio, que con su sabiduría podría haber salvado a la ciudad, ¡pero nadie se acordó de ese hombre pobre!

and there hath been found in it a poor wise man, and he hath delivered the city by his wisdom, and men have not remembered that poor man!

16 E ntonces me dije: La sabiduría puede más que la fuerza, aun cuando la sabiduría del pobre sea menospreciada y no se preste atención a sus consejos.

And I said, `Better wisdom than might, and the wisdom of the poor is despised, and his words are not heard.' --

17 E s mejor escuchar las suaves palabras del sabio que los gritos del rey de los necios.

The words of the wise in quiet are heard, More than the cry of a ruler over fools.

18 L a sabiduría es mejor que las armas de guerra, aunque un solo error destruye muchas cosas buenas.

Better wisdom than weapons of conflict, And one sinner destroyeth much good!
