1 ¿ Qué, no soy apóstol? ¿Y acaso no soy libre? ¿Acaso no he visto a Jesús, nuestro Señor? ¿Y no son ustedes el fruto de mi trabajo en el Señor?

Am not I an apostle? am not I free? Jesus Christ our Lord have I not seen? my work are not ye in the Lord?

2 T al vez otros no me consideren apóstol, pero para ustedes sí lo soy, porque ustedes son el sello de mi apostolado en el Señor.

if to others I am not an apostle -- yet doubtless to you I am; for the seal of my apostleship are ye in the Lord.

3 M i defensa contra los que me acusan es la siguiente:

My defence to those who examine me in this;

4 ¿ Acaso nosotros no tenemos derecho a comer y beber?

have we not authority to eat and to drink?

5 ¿ Y acaso no tenemos derecho a traer con nosotros una esposa creyente, como lo hacen los otros apóstoles, y Cefas y los hermanos del Señor?

have we not authority a sister -- a wife -- to lead about, as also the other apostles, and the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?

6 ¿ O es que sólo Bernabé y yo estamos obligados a trabajar?

or only I and Barnabas, have we not authority -- not to work?

7 ¿ Qué soldado presta servicio a expensas de sus propios recursos? ¿Quién planta una viña y no come de sus uvas? ¿O quién pastorea el rebaño y no bebe de la leche que ordeña?

who doth serve as a soldier at his own charges at any time? who doth plant a vineyard, and of its fruit doth not eat? or who doth feed a flock, and of the milk of the flock doth not eat?

8 E sto lo digo, no sólo de acuerdo con el punto de vista humano, sino también de acuerdo con la ley.

According to man do I speak these things? or doth not also the law say these things?

9 P orque en la ley de Moisés está escrito: «No pondrás bozal al buey que trilla». ¿Quiere decir esto que Dios se preocupa de los bueyes,

for in the law of Moses it hath been written, `thou shalt not muzzle an ox treading out corn;' for the oxen doth God care?

10 o más bien lo dice por todos nosotros? En realidad, esto se escribió por nosotros; porque tanto el que ara como el que trilla deben hacerlo con la esperanza de recibir su parte de la cosecha.

or because of us by all means doth He say ? yes, because of us it was written, because in hope ought the plower to plow, and he who is treading of his hope to partake in hope.

11 S i nosotros sembramos entre ustedes lo espiritual, ¿será mucho pedir que cosechemos de ustedes lo material?

If we to you the spiritual things did sow -- great if we your fleshly things do reap?

12 S i otros participan de este derecho sobre ustedes, ¡con mayor razón nosotros! Sin embargo, no hemos hecho uso de este derecho, sino que lo toleramos todo, a fin de no presentar ningún obstáculo al evangelio de Cristo.

if others do partake of the authority over you -- not we more? but we did not use this authority, but all things we bear, that we may give no hindrance to the good news of the Christ.

13 ¿ Acaso no saben ustedes que los que trabajan en el templo, comen del templo; y que los que sirven al altar, participan del altar?

Have ye not known that those working about the things of the temple -- of the temple do eat, and those waiting at the altar -- with the altar are partakers?

14 A sí también el Señor ordenó a los que anuncian el evangelio, que vivan del evangelio.

so also did the Lord direct to those proclaiming the good news: of the good news to live.

15 P ero yo no me he aprovechado de nada de esto, ni tampoco he escrito esto para que se haga así conmigo; porque prefiero morir antes que alguien me despoje de este motivo de orgullo.

And I have used none of these things; neither did I write these things that it may be so done in my case, for good for me rather to die, than that any one may make my glorying void;

16 P ues si anuncio el evangelio, no tengo por qué jactarme, porque ésa es mi misión insoslayable. ¡Ay de mí si no predico el evangelio!

for if I may proclaim good news, it is no glorying for me, for necessity is laid upon me, and wo is to me if I may not proclaim good news;

17 A sí que, si lo hago de buena voluntad, recibiré mi recompensa; pero si lo hago de mala voluntad, no hago más que cumplir con la misión que me ha sido encomendada.

for if willing I do this, I have a reward; and if unwillingly -- with a stewardship I have been entrusted!

18 ¿ Cuál es, pues, mi recompensa? La de predicar el evangelio de Cristo de manera gratuita, para no abusar de mi derecho en el evangelio.

What, then, is my reward? -- that proclaiming good news, without charge I shall make the good news of the Christ, not to abuse my authority in the good news;

19 P orque, aunque soy libre y no dependo de nadie, me he hecho esclavo de todos para ganar al mayor número posible.

for being free from all men, to all men I made myself servant, that the more I might gain;

20 E ntre los judíos me comporto como judío, para ganar a los judíos; y, aunque no estoy sujeto a la ley, entre los que están sujetos a la ley me comporto como si estuviera sujeto a la ley, para ganar a los que están sujetos a la ley.

and I became to the Jews as a Jew, that Jews I might gain; to those under law as under law, that those under law I might gain;

21 E ntre los que no tienen ley, me comporto como si no tuviera ley, para ganar a los que no tienen ley (aun cuando no estoy libre de la ley de Dios, sino bajo la ley de Cristo).

to those without law, as without law -- (not being without law to God, but within law to Christ) -- that I might gain those without law;

22 E ntre los débiles me comporto como débil, para ganar a los débiles; me comporto como todos ante todos, para que de todos pueda yo salvar a algunos.

I became to the infirm as infirm, that the infirm I might gain; to all men I have become all things, that by all means I may save some.

23 Y esto lo hago por causa del evangelio, para ser copartícipe de él.

And this I do because of the good news, that a fellow-partaker of it I may become;

24 ¿ Acaso no saben ustedes que, aunque todos corren en el estadio, solamente uno se lleva el premio? Corran, pues, de tal manera que lo obtengan.

have ye not known that those running in a race -- all indeed run, but one doth receive the prize? so run ye, that ye may obtain;

25 T odos los que luchan, se abstienen de todo. Ellos lo hacen para recibir una corona corruptible; pero nosotros, para recibir una corona incorruptible.

and every one who is striving, is in all things temperate; these, indeed, then, that a corruptible crown they may receive, but we an incorruptible;

26 A sí que yo corro y lucho, pero no sin una meta definida; no lo hago como si estuviera golpeando el viento;

I, therefore, thus run, not as uncertainly, thus I fight, as not beating air;

27 m ás bien, golpeo mi cuerpo y lo someto a servidumbre, no sea que después de haber predicado a otros yo mismo quede eliminado.

but I chastise my body, and bring into servitude, lest by any means, having preached to others -- I myself may become disapproved.
