1 A ños después, durante el reinado del rey Artajerjes de Persia, hubo un hombre llamado Esdras, descendiente en línea directa de Seraías, Azarías, Hilcías,

And after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra son of Seraiah, son of Azariah, son of Hilkiah,

2 S alún, Sadoc, Ajitob,

son of Shallum, son of Zadok, son of Ahitub,

3 A marías, Azarías, Merayot,

son of Amariah, son of Azariah, son of Meraioth,

4 Z eraías, Uzi, Buqui,

son of Zerahiah, son of Uzzi, son of Bukki,

5 A bisúa, Finés y Eleazar. Todos ellos eran descendientes de Aarón, el primer sacerdote de los israelitas.

son of Abishua, son of Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the head priest;

6 E ste Esdras salió de Babilonia, y era un escriba con amplios conocimientos de la ley que el Señor y Dios de Israel le había dado a Moisés. El rey Artajerjes le concedió a Esdras todo lo que éste le pidió, porque el poder del Señor estaba con él.

Ezra himself hath come up from Babylon, and he a scribe ready in the law of Moses, that Jehovah God of Israel gave, and the king giveth to him -- according to the hand of Jehovah his God upon him -- all his request.

7 E n el séptimo año del reinado de Artajerjes Esdras y algunos israelitas salieron hacia Jerusalén, y también sacerdotes, levitas, cantores, porteros y criados del templo.

And there go up of the sons of Israel, and of the priests, and the Levites, and the singers, and the gatekeepers, and the Nethinim, unto Jerusalem, in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king.

8 C uando Esdras llegó a Jerusalén, corría el quinto mes del séptimo año del reinado de Artajerjes.

And he cometh in to Jerusalem in the fifth month, that the seventh year of the king,

9 E sdras y su gente salieron de Babilonia el primer día del primer mes, y llegaron a Jerusalén el primer día del quinto mes, guiados por la bondadosa mano de Dios.

for on the first of the month he hath founded the ascent from Babylon, and on the first of the fifth month he hath come in unto Jerusalem, according to the good hand of his God upon him,

10 Y es que Esdras se había entregado de corazón al estudio de la ley del Señor, y a cumplirla y enseñarla a los israelitas, con todas sus normas y ordenanzas.

for Ezra hath prepared his heart to seek the law of Jehovah, and to do, and to teach in Israel statute and judgment.

11 É sta es la copia de la carta que el rey Artajerjes entregó al sacerdote Esdras, profundo conocedor de los mandamientos y estatutos que el Señor había dado a Israel:

And this a copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priest, the scribe, a scribe of the words of the commands of Jehovah, and of His statutes on Israel:

12 « De Artajerjes, rey de reyes, a Esdras, sacerdote y escriba erudito en la ley del Dios del cielo. Paz.

`Artaxerxes, king of kings, to Ezra the priest, a perfect scribe of the law of the God of heaven, and at such a time:

13 » Por este conducto ordeno que todo israelita, sacerdote o levita, que viva en mi reino y quiera ir contigo a Jerusalén, puede irse.

By me hath been made a decree that every one who is willing, in my kingdom, of the people of Israel and of its priests and Levites, to go to Jerusalem with thee, doth go;

14 Y o, el rey, y mis siete consejeros, hemos acordado enviarte a Judea y a Jerusalén, en conformidad con la ley de tu Dios, la cual obra en tus manos.

because that from the king and his seven counsellors thou art sent, to inquire concerning Judah and concerning Jerusalem, with the law of God that in thy hand,

15 L levarás contigo toda la plata y el oro que mis consejeros y yo voluntariamente ofrecemos al Dios de Israel, cuyo templo está en Jerusalén.

and to carry silver and gold that the king and his counsellors willingly offered to the God of Israel, whose tabernacle in Jerusalem,

16 L levarás también toda la plata y el oro que logres recaudar en toda la provincia de Babilonia, lo mismo que las ofrendas voluntarias del pueblo y de los sacerdotes para el templo de Dios en Jerusalén.

and all the silver and gold that thou findest in all the province of Babylon, with the free-will offerings of the people, and of the priests, offering willingly, for the house of their God that in Jerusalem,

17 C on lo que recaudes podrás comprar becerros, carneros y corderos, además de cereales y vino, para que los ofrezcas sobre el altar del templo del Dios de ustedes en Jerusalén.

therefore thou dost speedily buy with this money, bullocks, rams, lambs, and their presents, and their libations, and dost bring them near to the altar of the house of your God that in Jerusalem,

18 S i a ti y a tus hermanos les parece que con el oro y la plata restante pueden comprar otras cosas, háganlo, de acuerdo con la voluntad de su Dios.

and that which to thee and to thy brethren is good to do with the rest of the silver and gold, according to the will of your God ye do.'

19 L os utensilios que te serán devueltos son para el servicio del templo de tu Dios, así que los devolverás ante tu Dios en Jerusalén.

`And the vessels that are given to thee, for the service of the house of thy God, make perfect before the God of Jerusalem;

20 C ualquier otra cosa que sea necesaria para el templo de tu Dios, y que tengas que pagar, lo pagarás del tesoro real.

and the rest of the needful things of the house of thy God, that it falleth to thee to give, thou dost give from the treasure-house of the king.

21 » Yo, el rey Artajerjes, ordeno a todos los tesoreros que están al otro lado del río Éufrates proveer a Esdras, sacerdote y escriba de la ley del Dios del cielo, todo lo que él les pida, y hacerlo de manera inmediata,

`And by me -- I Artaxerxes the king -- is made a decree to all treasurers who beyond the river, that all that Ezra the priest, scribe of the law of the God of heaven, doth ask of you, be done speedily:

22 s iendo el límite de hasta cien talentos de plata, cien coros de trigo, cien batos de vino, cien batos de aceite, y sal sin medida.

Unto silver a hundred talents, and unto wheat a hundred cors, and unto wine a hundred baths, and unto oil a hundred baths, and salt without reckoning;

23 Q ue todo lo que ordene el Dios del cielo para su templo se haga con prontitud. ¿Por qué exponernos a que el Señor se enoje contra el rey y contra sus hijos?

all that by the decree of the God of heaven, let be done diligently for the house of the God of heaven; for why is there wrath against the kingdom of the king and his sons?

24 » Tómese nota de que todos los sacerdotes, levitas, cantores, porteros, criados del templo y ministros del templo del Señor, estarán exentos de pagar tributo, contribución o renta.

`And to you we are making known, that upon any of the priests and Levites, singers, gatekeepers, Nethinim, and servants of the house of God, tribute and custom there is no authority to lift up.

25 » En cuanto a ti, Esdras, usa la sabiduría que tu Dios te ha concedido y elige jueces y gobernadores para el pueblo que está al otro lado del río Éufrates, que conoce los mandamientos de tu Dios. Si alguno no los conoce, tú deberás instruirlo.

`And thou, Ezra, according to the wisdom of thy God, that in thy hand, appoint magistrates and judges who may be judges to all the people who are beyond the river, to all knowing the law of thy God, and he who hath not known ye cause to know;

26 » Todo aquel que no cumpla con la ley de tu Dios ni con la ley del rey, deberá ser juzgado de inmediato y condenado a muerte, a destierro, a pagar una multa, o a ir a prisión.» Gratitud de Esdras

and any who doth not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, speedily is judgment done upon him, whether to death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of riches, and to bonds.'

27 « Yo, Esdras, bendigo al Señor, Dios de nuestros padres, por haber puesto esos sentimientos en el corazón del rey, para honrar el templo del Señor en Jerusalén,

Blessed Jehovah, God of our fathers, who hath given such a thing as this in the heart of the king, to beautify the house of Jehovah that in Jerusalem,

28 y por su bondad y misericordia para conmigo, pues he sido bien visto por el rey y por sus consejeros y por todos los hombres de importancia que rodean al rey. El poder de Dios me ha permitido recobrar las fuerzas y reunir a los hombres importantes de Israel para que me acompañen.»

and unto me hath stretched out kindness before the king and his counsellors, and before all the mighty heads of the king: and I have strengthened myself as the hand of Jehovah my God upon me, and I gather out of Israel heads to go up with me.
