1 E l ángel del Señor fue de Gilgal a Boquín, y les dijo a los israelitas: «Yo los liberé de Egipto y los llevé a la tierra que prometí dar a sus antepasados, cuando les dije: “Nunca anularé mi pacto con ustedes,

And a messenger of Jehovah goeth up from Gilgal unto Bochim,

2 m ientras no hagan pacto con los que habitan en esta tierra, gente que tiene altares que ustedes deben destruir.” Pero ustedes no me hicieron caso. ¿Por qué no lo han hecho?

and saith, `I cause you to come up out of Egypt, and bring you in unto the land which I have sworn to your fathers, and say, I do not break My covenant with you to the age; and ye -- ye make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land -- their altars ye break down; and ye have not hearkened to My voice -- what this ye have done?

3 P or lo tanto, escúchenme bien: No voy a expulsar de estas tierras a sus habitantes, sino que ellos serán para ustedes como azotes en los costados, y sus dioses los confundirán.»

And I also have said, I do not cast them out from your presence, and they have been to you for adversaries, and their gods are to you for a snare.'

4 C uando el ángel del Señor dijo esto a los israelitas, ellos se echaron a llorar con fuerte voz.

And it cometh to pass, when the messenger of Jehovah speaketh these words unto all the sons of Israel, that the people lift up their voice and weep,

5 P or eso, a ese lugar lo llamaron Boquín, y allí ofrecieron sacrificios al Señor. Muerte de Josué

and they call the name of that place Bochim, and sacrifice there to Jehovah.

6 J osué despidió al pueblo de Israel, y cada uno fue y tomó posesión de su heredad.

And Joshua sendeth the people away, and the sons of Israel go, each to his inheritance, to possess the land;

7 Y mientras vivió Josué, y los ancianos que le sobrevivieron y que habían visto las obras del Señor en favor de Israel, todo el pueblo sirvió al Señor.

and the people serve Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who prolonged days after Joshua, who saw all the great work of Jehovah which He did to Israel.

8 Y Josué hijo de Nun, siervo del Señor, murió a la edad de ciento diez años.

And Joshua son of Nun, servant of Jehovah, dieth, a son of a hundred and ten years,

9 L o sepultaron en Timnat Seraj, que era su heredad, en el monte de Efraín, al norte del monte de Gaas.

and they bury him in the border of his inheritance, in Timnath-Heres, in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of mount Gaash;

10 Y murió también toda esa generación, y se reunió con sus antepasados. Después de ellos vino otra generación que no conocía al Señor, ni sabía lo que el Señor había hecho por Israel. Apostasía de Israel y surgimiento de los jueces

and also all that generation have been gathered unto their fathers, and another generation riseth after them who have not known Jehovah, and even the work which He hath done to Israel.

11 L os israelitas hicieron lo malo a los ojos del Señor, y adoraron a los baales.

And the sons of Israel do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, and serve the Baalim,

12 A bandonaron al Señor, el Dios que sacó a sus antepasados de la tierra de Egipto, y empezaron a adorar a los dioses de los pueblos que vivían a su alrededor, con lo que provocaron el enojo del Señor.

and forsake Jehovah, God of their fathers, who bringeth them out from the land of Egypt, and go after other gods (of the gods of the peoples who round about them), and bow themselves to them, and provoke Jehovah,

13 S e apartaron del Señor, para adorar a Baal y a Astarot.

yea, they forsake Jehovah, and do service to Baal and to Ashtaroth.

14 P or eso el Señor se enojó contra el pueblo de Israel y los entregó en manos de ladrones, que lo despojaron de todo; los dejó a merced de los enemigos que lo rodeaban, a los cuales ya no pudo vencer.

And the anger of Jehovah burneth against Israel, and He giveth them into the hand of spoilers, and they spoil them, and He selleth them into the hand of their enemies round about, and they have not been able any more to stand before their enemies;

15 A dondequiera que iban, la mano del Señor estaba en contra de ellos para su mal, y tal como se lo había jurado, se vieron en gran aflicción.

in every where they have gone out, the hand of Jehovah hath been against them for evil, as Jehovah hath spoken, and as Jehovah hath sworn to them, and they are distressed -- greatly.

16 E ntonces el Señor suscitó caudillos para que los libraran de aquellos que los despojaban.

And Jehovah raiseth up judges, and they save them from the hand of their spoilers;

17 P ero ellos tampoco escuchaban a sus caudillos, sino que se fueron tras dioses ajenos, a los cuales adoraron, y pronto se apartaron del camino que habían seguido sus antepasados, pues sus antepasados habían obedecido los mandamientos del Señor, pero ellos no lo hicieron así.

and also unto their judges they have not hearkened, but have gone a-whoring after other gods, and bow themselves to them; they have turned aside haste out of the way which their fathers walked to obey the commands of Jehovah -- they have not done so.

18 C uando el Señor suscitaba algún caudillo, también lo apoyaba y, mientras ese caudillo vivía, los libraba del poder de sus enemigos, pues el Señor se conmovía al escuchar los gemidos de su pueblo oprimido y afligido.

And when Jehovah raised up to them judges -- then was Jehovah with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for it repenteth Jehovah, because of their groaning from the presence of their oppressors, and of those thrusting them away.

19 P ero al morir aquel caudillo, el pueblo volvía a corromperse aún más que sus antepasados, y seguía a los dioses ajenos para servirles y adorarlos; y no se arrepentían de sus obras, ni de su obstinada conducta.

And it hath come to pass, at the death of the judge -- they turn back and have done corruptly above their fathers, to go after other gods, to serve them, and to bow themselves to them; they have not fallen from their doings, and from their stiff way.

20 P or eso la ira del Señor se encendió contra Israel, y dijo: «Como este pueblo ha roto el pacto que establecí con sus antepasados, y no me obedece,

And the anger of Jehovah doth burn against Israel, and He saith, `Because that this nation have transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened to My voice --

21 t ampoco yo volveré a expulsar delante de ellos a ninguna de las naciones que Josué dejó al morir.»

I also continue not to dispossess any from before them of the nations which Joshua hath left when he dieth,

22 É sta era una prueba para Israel, para ver si se esforzaban en volver al camino del Señor, como sus antepasados.

in order to try Israel by them, whether they are keeping the way of Jehovah, to go in it, as their fathers kept or not.'

23 P or esta razón, el Señor no expulsó a aquellas naciones, ni se las entregó a Josué, sino que las dejó entre ellos.

And Jehovah leaveth these nations, so as not to dispossess them hastily, and did not give them into the hand of Joshua.
