1 P ero digo también: Mientras el heredero es niño, en nada difiere del esclavo, aunque es señor de todo,

And I say, so long time as the heir is a babe, he differeth nothing from a servant -- being lord of all,

2 s ólo que está bajo tutores y guardianes hasta el tiempo señalado por el padre.

but is under tutors and stewards till the time appointed of the father,

3 A sí también nosotros, cuando éramos niños, vivíamos en esclavitud y sujetos a los principios básicos del mundo.

so also we, when we were babes, under the elements of the world were in servitude,

4 P ero cuando se cumplió el tiempo señalado, Dios envió a su Hijo, que nació de una mujer y sujeto a la ley,

and when the fulness of time did come, God sent forth His Son, come of a woman, come under law,

5 p ara que redimiera a los que estaban sujetos a la ley, a fin de que recibiéramos la adopción de hijos.

that those under law he may redeem, that the adoption of sons we may receive;

6 Y por cuanto ustedes son hijos, Dios envió a sus corazones el Espíritu de su Hijo, el cual clama: «¡Abba, Padre!»

and because ye are sons, God did send forth the spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying, `Abba, Father!'

7 A sí que ya no eres esclavo, sino hijo; y si eres hijo, también eres heredero de Dios por medio de Cristo. Exhortación contra el volver a la esclavitud

so that thou art no more a servant, but a son, and if a son, also an heir of God through Christ.

8 C iertamente, en otro tiempo, cuando ustedes no conocían a Dios, servían a los que por naturaleza no son dioses;

But then, indeed, not having known God, ye were in servitude to those not by nature gods,

9 p ero ahora que conocen a Dios, o más bien, que Dios los conoce a ustedes, ¿cómo es que han vuelto de nuevo a los débiles y pobres rudimentos, a los cuales quieren volver a esclavizarse?

and now, having known God -- and rather being known by God -- how turn ye again unto the weak and poor elements to which anew ye desire to be in servitude?

10 U stedes guardan los días, los meses, los tiempos y los años.

days ye observe, and months, and times, and years!

11 ¡ Me temo que, con ustedes, yo he trabajado en vano!

I am afraid of you, lest in vain I did labour toward you.

12 L es ruego, hermanos, que se hagan como yo, porque yo también me he hecho como ustedes. Ningún agravio me han hecho.

Become as I -- because I also as ye brethren, I beseech you; to me ye did no hurt,

13 B ien saben ustedes que, debido a una enfermedad del cuerpo, les anuncié el evangelio al principio,

and ye have known that through infirmity of the flesh I did proclaim good news to you at the first,

14 y ustedes no me despreciaron ni desecharon por la prueba que tenía en el cuerpo, sino que me recibieron como a un ángel de Dios, como a Cristo Jesús.

and my trial that in my flesh ye did not despise nor reject, but as a messenger of God ye did receive me -- as Christ Jesus;

15 ¿ Dónde, pues, está esa satisfacción que experimentaban? Yo doy testimonio de que, de haber podido, ustedes se habrían sacado sus propios ojos, para dármelos.

what then was your happiness? for I testify to you, that if possible, your eyes having plucked out, ye would have given to me;

16 ¿ Acaso me he vuelto enemigo de ustedes, por decirles la verdad?

so that your enemy have I become, being true to you?

17 A lgunos muestran mucho interés por ustedes, pero no para bien, sino que quieren apartarlos de nosotros para que ustedes muestren interés por ellos.

they are zealous for you -- not well, but they wish to shut us out, that for them ye may be zealous;

18 Q ué bien que muestren interés en lo bueno siempre, y no sólo cuando estoy presente con ustedes.

and good to be zealously regarded, in what is good, at all times, and not only in my being present with you;

19 H ijitos míos, por quienes vuelvo a sufrir dolores de parto, hasta que Cristo sea formado en ustedes,

my little children, of whom again I travail in birth, till Christ may be formed in you,

20 q uisiera estar con ustedes ahora mismo y cambiar de tono, pues ustedes me tienen perplejo. Alegoría de Sara y Agar

and I was wishing to be present with you now, and to change my voice, because I am in doubt about you.

21 D íganme, ustedes que quieren estar sujetos a la ley: ¿no han oído lo que dice la ley?

Tell me, ye who are willing to be under law, the law do ye not hear?

22 P orque está escrito que Abrahán tuvo dos hijos; uno de la esclava, y el otro de la libre.

for it hath been written, that Abraham had two sons, one by the maid-servant, and one by the free-woman,

23 E l hijo de la esclava nació conforme a una decisión humana; pero el hijo de la libre nació conforme a la promesa.

but he who of the maid-servant, according to flesh hath been, and he who of the free-woman, through the promise;

24 L o cual es una alegoría, pues estas mujeres son los dos pactos; el uno proviene del monte Sinaí, el cual da hijos para esclavitud; éste es Agar.

which things are allegorized, for these are the two covenants: one, indeed, from mount Sinai, to servitude bringing forth, which is Hagar;

25 P orque Agar es el monte Sinaí en Arabia, y corresponde a la Jerusalén actual, y ésta, junto con sus hijos, está en esclavitud.

for this Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and doth correspond to the Jerusalem that now, and is in servitude with her children,

26 P ero la Jerusalén de arriba, la cual es madre de todos nosotros, es libre.

and the Jerusalem above is the free-woman, which is mother of us all,

27 P orque está escrito: «Regocíjate, oh estéril, tú que no das a luz; prorrumpe en júbilo y clama, tú que no tienes dolores de parto; porque más son los hijos de la desolada que los de la que tiene marido.»

for it hath been written, `Rejoice, O barren, who art not bearing; break forth and cry, thou who art not travailing, because many the children of the desolate -- more than of her having the husband.'

28 A sí que, hermanos, nosotros, como Isaac, somos hijos de la promesa.

And we, brethren, as Isaac, are children of promise,

29 P ero como entonces el que había nacido según la carne perseguía al que había nacido según el Espíritu, así también sucede ahora.

but as then he who was born according to the flesh did persecute him according to the spirit, so also now;

30 P ero ¿qué dice la Escritura? «Echa fuera a la esclava y a su hijo, porque el hijo de la esclava no heredará con el hijo de la libre.»

but what saith the Writing? `Cast forth the maid-servant and her son, for the son of the maid-servant may not be heir with the son of the free-woman;'

31 D e modo, hermanos, que no somos hijos de la esclava, sino de la libre.

then, brethren, we are not a maid-servant's children, but the free-woman's.
