1 E stas son las palabras que Moisés habló a todo Israel al otro lado (al este) del río Jordán, en el desierto, en el Arabá, frente a Suf, entre Parán, Tofel, Labán, Hazerot y Dizahab.

These the words which Moses hath spoken unto all Israel, beyond the Jordan, in the wilderness, in the plain over-against Suph, between Paran and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Di-Zahab;

2 H ay once días de camino desde Horeb hasta Cades Barnea por el camino del Monte Seir.

eleven days' from Horeb, the way of mount Seir, unto Kadesh-Barnea.

3 E n el año cuarenta, el mes undécimo, el primer día del mes, Moisés habló a los Israelitas conforme a todo lo que el Señor le había ordenado que les diera,

And it cometh to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first of the month hath Moses spoken unto the sons of Israel according to all that Jehovah hath commanded him concerning them;

4 d espués de haber derrotado a Sehón, rey de los Amorreos, que habitaba en Hesbón, y a Og, rey de Basán, que habitaba en Astarot y en Edrei.

after his smiting Sihon king of the Amorite who is dwelling in Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan who is dwelling in Ashtaroth in Edrei,

5 A l otro lado del Jordán, en la tierra de Moab, Moisés comenzó a explicar esta ley:

beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, hath Moses begun to explain this law, saying:

6 “ El Señor nuestro Dios nos habló en Horeb y dijo: ‘Ustedes han permanecido bastante tiempo en este monte.

`Jehovah our God hath spoken unto us in Horeb, saying, Enough to you -- of dwelling in this mount;

7 V uélvanse; pónganse en marcha y vayan a la región montañosa de los Amorreos, y a todos sus vecinos, en el Arabá, en la región montañosa, en el valle, en el Neguev (la región del sur), y por la costa del mar, la tierra de los Cananeos y el Líbano, hasta el gran río, el Río Eufrates.

turn ye and journey for you, and enter the mount of the Amorite, and unto all its neighbouring places, in the plain, in the hill-country, and in the low country, and in the south, and in the haven of the sea, the land of the Canaanite, and of Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Phrat;

8 M iren, he puesto la tierra delante de ustedes. Entren y tomen posesión de la tierra que el Señor juró dar a sus padres Abraham, Isaac y Jacob, a ellos y a su descendencia después de ellos.’ Ayudantes para Moisés

see, I have set before you the land; go in and possess the land which Jehovah hath sworn to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them, and to their seed after them.

9 “ En aquel tiempo les hablé: ‘Yo solo no puedo llevar la carga de todos ustedes.

`And I speak unto you at that time, saying, I am not able by myself to bear you;

10 E l Señor su Dios los ha multiplicado y hoy son como las estrellas del cielo en multitud.

Jehovah your God hath multiplied you, and lo, ye to-day as the stars of the heavens for multitude;

11 Q ue el Señor, el Dios de sus padres, los multiplique mil veces más de lo que son y los bendiga, tal como les ha prometido.

Jehovah, God of your fathers, is adding to you, as ye, a thousand times, and doth bless you as He hath spoken to you.

12 ¿ Cómo puedo yo solo llevar el peso y la carga de ustedes y sus pleitos?

`How do I bear by myself your pressure, and your burden, and your strife?

13 E scojan de entre sus tribus hombres sabios, entendidos y expertos, y yo los nombraré como sus jefes.’

Give for yourselves men, wise and intelligent, and known to your tribes, and I set them for your heads;

14 “ Entonces ustedes me respondieron: ‘Bueno es que se haga lo que has dicho.’

and ye answer me and say, Good the thing which thou hast spoken -- to do.

15 A sí que tomé a los principales de sus tribus, hombres sabios y expertos, y los nombré como dirigentes suyos: jefes de mil, de cien, de cincuenta y de diez, y oficiales para sus tribus.

`And I take the heads of your tribes, men, wise and known, and I appoint them heads over you, princes of thousands, and princes of hundreds, and princes of fifties, and princes of tens, and authorities, for your tribes.

16 “ En aquella ocasión di órdenes a sus jueces y les dije: ‘Oigan los pleitos entre sus hermanos, y juzguen justamente entre un hombre y su hermano, o el extranjero que está con él.

And I command your judges at that time, saying, Hearkening between your brethren -- then ye have judged righteousness between a man, and his brother, and his sojourner;

17 N o mostrarán parcialidad en el juicio; lo mismo oirán al pequeño que al grande. No tendrán temor del hombre, porque el juicio es de Dios. El caso que sea muy difícil para ustedes, me lo traerán a mí, y yo lo oiré.’

ye do not discern faces in judgment; as the little so the great ye do hear; ye are not afraid of the face of any, for the judgment is God's, and the thing which is too hard for you, ye bring near unto me, and I have heard it;

18 E n aquella misma ocasión les mandé todas las cosas que debían hacer. Misión de los Doce Espías

and I command you, at that time, all the things which ye do.

19 “ Entonces salimos de Horeb y pasamos por todo aquel vasto y terrible desierto que ustedes vieron, camino de la región montañosa de los Amorreos, tal como el Señor nuestro Dios nos había mandado, y llegamos a Cades Barnea.

`And we journey from Horeb, and go all that great and fearful wilderness which ye have seen -- the way of the hill-country of the Amorite, as Jehovah our God hath commanded us, and we come in unto Kadesh-Barnea.

20 Y les dije: ‘Han llegado a la región montañosa de los Amorreos que el Señor nuestro Dios nos va a dar.

`And I say unto you, Ye have come in unto the hill-country of the Amorite, which Jehovah our God is giving to us;

21 M ira, Israel, el Señor tu Dios ha puesto la tierra delante de ti; sube, toma posesión de ella, como el Señor, el Dios de tus padres, te ha dicho. No temas ni te acobardes.’

see, Jehovah thy God hath set before thee the land; go up, possess, as Jehovah, God of thy fathers, hath spoken to thee; fear not, nor be affrighted.

22 “ Entonces todos ustedes se acercaron a mí, y dijeron: ‘Enviemos hombres delante de nosotros, que nos exploren la tierra, y nos traigan noticia del camino por el cual hemos de subir y de las ciudades a las cuales entraremos.’

`And ye come near unto me, all of you, and say, Let us send men before us, and they search for us the land, and they bring us back word the way in which we go up into it, and the cities unto which we come in;

23 “ Me agradó el plan, y tomé a doce hombres de entre ustedes, un hombre por cada tribu.

and the thing is good in mine eyes, and I take of you twelve men, one man for a tribe.

24 E llos salieron y subieron a la región montañosa, y llegaron hasta el Valle de Escol, y reconocieron la tierra.

`And they turn and go up to the hill-country, and come in unto the valley of Eshcol, and spy it,

25 E ntonces tomaron en sus manos del fruto de la tierra y nos lo trajeron; y nos dieron un informe y dijeron: ‘Es una tierra buena que el Señor nuestro Dios nos da.’

and they take with their hand of the fruit of the land, and bring down unto us, and bring us back word, and say, Good is the land which Jehovah our God is giving to us.

26 “ Sin embargo, ustedes no quisieron subir, y se rebelaron contra el mandato del Señor su Dios.

`And ye have not been willing to go up, and ye provoke the mouth of Jehovah your God,

27 M urmuraron en sus tiendas y dijeron: ‘Porque el Señor nos aborrece, nos ha sacado de la tierra de Egipto para entregarnos en manos de los Amorreos y destruirnos.

and murmur in your tents, and say, In Jehovah's hating us He hath brought us out of the land of Egypt, to give us into the hand of the Amorite -- to destroy us;

28 ‘ ¿Adónde subiremos? Nuestros hermanos nos han atemorizado, diciendo: “El pueblo es más grande y más alto que nosotros; las ciudades son grandes y fortificadas hasta el cielo. Y además vimos allí a los hijos de Anac.”’

whither are we going up? our brethren have melted our heart, saying, A people greater and taller than we, cities great and fenced to heaven, and also sons of Anakim -- we have seen there.

29 “ Entonces yo les dije: ‘No teman ni les tengan miedo.

`And I say unto you, Be not terrified, nor be afraid of them;

30 E l Señor su Dios, que va delante de ustedes, El peleará por ustedes, así como lo hizo delante de sus ojos en Egipto

Jehovah your God, who is going before you -- He doth fight for you, according to all that He hath done with you in Egypt before your eyes,

31 y en el desierto, donde has visto cómo el Señor tu Dios te llevó, como un hombre lleva a su hijo, por todo el camino que anduvieron hasta llegar a este lugar.’

and in the wilderness, where thou hast seen that Jehovah thy God hath borne thee as a man beareth his son, in all the way which ye have gone, till your coming in unto this place.

32 P ero con todo esto, ustedes no confiaron en el Señor su Dios,

`And in this thing ye are not stedfast in Jehovah your God,

33 q ue iba delante de ustedes en el camino para buscarles lugar dónde acampar, con fuego de noche y nube de día, para mostrarles el camino por donde debían andar. El Castigo de Dios

who is going before you in the way to search out to you a place for your encamping, in fire by night, to shew you in the way in which ye go, and in a cloud by day.

34 “ Entonces el Señor oyó la voz de las palabras de ustedes, y se enojó y juró:

`And Jehovah heareth the voice of your words, and is wroth, and sweareth, saying,

35 ‘ Ninguno de estos hombres, esta generación perversa, verá la buena tierra que juré dar a sus padres,

Not one of these men of this evil generation doth see the good land which I have sworn to give to your fathers,

36 e xcepto Caleb, hijo de Jefone; él la verá, y a él y a sus hijos daré la tierra que ha pisado, pues él ha seguido fielmente al Señor.’

save Caleb son of Jephunneh -- he doth see it, and to him I give the land on which he hath trodden, and to his sons, because that he hath been fully after Jehovah.

37 “ El Señor se enojó también contra mí por causa de ustedes y dijo: ‘Tampoco tú entrarás allá.

`Also with me hath Jehovah been angry for your sake, saying, Also, thou dost not go in thither;

38 J osué, hijo de Nun, que está delante de ti, él entrará allá; anímale, porque él hará que Israel la posea.

Joshua son of Nun, who is standing before thee, he goeth in thither; him strengthen thou; for he doth cause Israel to inherit.

39 A demás, en cuanto a los pequeños, que ustedes dijeron que vendrían a ser presa, y sus hijos, que hoy no tienen conocimiento del bien ni del mal, entrarán allá, y a ellos les daré la tierra y ellos la poseerán.

`And your infants, of whom ye have said, For a prey they are, and your sons who have not known to-day good and evil, they go in thither, and to them I give it, and they possess it;

40 P ero ustedes, vuélvanse y vayan hacia el desierto por el camino del Mar Rojo.’

and ye, turn for yourselves, and journey toward the wilderness, the way of the Red Sea.

41 “ Entonces ustedes respondieron: ‘Hemos pecado contra el Señor; nosotros subiremos y pelearemos tal como el Señor nuestro Dios nos ha mandado.’ Y cada uno de ustedes se puso sus armas de guerra, y pensaron que era fácil subir a la región montañosa.

`And ye answer and say unto me, We have sinned against Jehovah; we -- we go up, and we have fought, according to all that which Jehovah our God hath commanded us; and ye gird on each his weapons of war, and ye are ready to go up into the hill-country;

42 P ero el Señor me dijo: ‘Diles: “No suban, ni peleen, pues Yo no estoy entre ustedes; para que no sean derrotados por sus enemigos.”’

and Jehovah saith unto me, Say to them, Ye do not go up, nor fight, for I am not in your midst, and ye are not smitten before your enemies.

43 A sí les hablé, pero no quisieron escuchar. Al contrario, se rebelaron contra el mandamiento del Señor, y obraron con orgullo, y subieron a la región montañosa.

`And I speak unto you, and ye have not hearkened, and provoke the mouth of Jehovah, and act proudly, and go up into the hill-country;

44 L os Amorreos que moraban en aquella región montañosa salieron contra ustedes, y los persiguieron como lo hacen las abejas, y los derrotaron desde Seir hasta Horma.

and the Amorite who is dwelling in that hill-country cometh out to meet you, and they pursue you as the bees do, and smite you in Seir -- unto Hormah.

45 E ntonces volvieron y lloraron delante del Señor, pero el Señor no escuchó su voz, ni les hizo caso.

`And ye turn back and weep before Jehovah, and Jehovah hath not hearkened to your voice, nor hath he given ear unto you;

46 P or eso ustedes permanecieron en Cades muchos días, los días que pasaron allí.

and ye dwell in Kadesh many days, according to the days which ye had dwelt.
