1 С ин мудрий приймає картання від батька, а насмішник докору не слухає.

A wise son -- the instruction of a father, And a scorner -- he hath not heard rebuke.

2 З плоду уст чоловік споживає добро, а жадоба зрадливих насильство.

From the fruit of the mouth a man eateth good, And the soul of the treacherous -- violence.

3 Х то уста свої стереже, той душу свою береже, а хто губи свої розпускає, на того погибіль.

Whoso is keeping his mouth, is keeping his soul, Whoso is opening wide his lips -- ruin to him!

4 П ожадає душа лінюха, та даремно, душа ж роботящих насититься.

The soul of the slothful is desiring, and hath not. And the soul of the diligent is made fat.

5 Н енавидить праведний слово брехливе, безбожний же чинить лихе, і себе засоромлює.

A false word the righteous hateth, And the wicked causeth abhorrence, and is confounded.

6 П раведність оберігає невинного на дорозі його, а безбожність погублює грішника.

Righteousness keepeth him who is perfect in the way, And wickedness overthroweth a sin offering.

7 Д ехто вдає багача, хоч нічого не має, а дехто вдає бідака, хоч маєток великий у нього.

There is who is making himself rich, and hath nothing, Who is making himself poor, and wealth abundant.

8 В икуп за душу людини багатство її, а вбогий й докору не чує.

The ransom of a man's life his riches, And the poor hath not heard rebuke.

9 С вітло праведних весело світить, а світильник безбожних погасне.

The light of the righteous rejoiceth, And the lamp of the wicked is extinguished.

10 Т ільки сварка пихою зчиняється, а мудрість із тими, хто радиться.

A vain man through pride causeth debate, And with the counselled wisdom.

11 Б агатство, заскоро здобуте, поменшується, хто ж збирає помалу примножує.

Wealth from vanity becometh little, And whoso is gathering by the hand becometh great.

12 З адовга надія недуга для серця, а бажання, що сповнюється, це дерево життя.

Hope prolonged is making the heart sick, And a tree of life the coming desire.

13 Х то погорджує словом Господнім, той шкодить собі, хто ж страх має до заповіді, тому надолужиться.

Whoso is despising the Word is destroyed for it, And whoso is fearing the Command is repayed.

14 Н аука премудрого криниця життя, щоб віддалитися від пасток смерти.

The law of the wise a fountain of life, To turn aside from snares of death.

15 Д обрий розум приносить приємність, а дорога зрадливих погуба для них.

Good understanding giveth grace, And the way of the treacherous hard.

16 К ожен розумний за мудрістю робить, а безумний глупоту показує.

Every prudent one dealeth with knowledge, And a fool spreadeth out folly.

17 Б езбожний посол у нещастя впаде, а вірний посол немов лік.

A wicked messenger falleth into evil, And a faithful ambassador is healing.

18 Х то ламає поуку убозтво та ганьба тому, а хто береже осторогу шанований він.

Whoso is refusing instruction -- poverty and shame, And whoso is observing reproof is honoured.

19 В иконане побажання приємне душі, а вступитись від зла то огида безумним.

A desire accomplished is sweet to the soul, And an abomination to fools: Turn from evil.

20 Х то з мудрими ходить, той мудрим стає, а хто товаришує з безумним, той лиха набуде.

Whoso is walking with wise men is wise, And a companion of fools suffereth evil.

21 Г рішників зло доганяє, а праведним Бог надолужить добром.

Evil pursueth sinners, And good recompenseth the righteous.

22 Д обрий лишає спадок і онукам, маєток же грішника схований буде для праведного.

A good man causeth sons' sons to inherit, And laid up for the righteous the sinner's wealth.

23 У богому буде багато поживи і з поля невправного, та деякі гинуть з безправ'я.

Abundance of food -- the tillage of the poor, And substance is consumed without judgment.

24 Х то стримує різку свою, той ненавидить сина свого, хто ж кохає його, той шукає для нього картання.

Whoso is sparing his rod is hating his son, And whoso is loving him hath hastened him chastisement.

25 П раведний їсть, скільки схоче душа, живіт же безбожників завсіди брак відчуває.

The righteous is eating to the satiety of his soul, And the belly of the wicked lacketh!
